  1. thanks ramfree, guess I should have look here first. this doc is basically the same as the one I found by google. But my question is do I execute it (./) and install it "rpm -iv blah blah" within my Home dir (since thats where I downloaded it). I'm still a noob with rpm and any kind of installing (I'm getting spoiled on apt-get doing it all for me). Will it all install to the correct places automatically, OR do I need to make the /usr/java/j2sdkversion folders first... :? thanks !
  2. I'm not sure if installing j2sdk has been covered somewhere on this board, but here's where I am: I have downloaded the j2sdk rpm.bin file into my home dir. Note: I have found several tutorials regarding installing java on linux, and I have printed one of them that appears to be what I need. However, I'm a little unsure what dirs I'm supposed to be doing stuff in... :? My noobieness really shows on the linux fs. Also I've been apt-getting everything and its been doing it all for me... Anyway, like I said, the rpm.bin file is in my home dir. am I supposed to move or copy it to /usr/src or whatever... :? Or do I do the ./ in my home dir ? And after I do the ./, where do I do the rpm -iv ? I guess what I'm asking is that if I do all this in my home dir, will it get installed into the proper places ? Also, the tutorial that I am using mentions that maybe I should create and edit java.sh in /etc/profile.d/ - but I don't wanna mess with that since I'm the only person in my household that even knows what java is... btw: if I can do an apt-get install j2sdk I would rather do it that way. I googled apt-get +j2sdk +redhat but I didn't see what I was looking for... As always, thanks for any tips...
  3. so why's everyone always talking about urpmi, urpmi, urpmi... :? although I haven't used urpmi, I don't see how it could possibly be better than apt-get .... (also I did not know apt was available for mdk - thanks for that tip :) )
  4. I was a noob on mandrake and had so much trouble installing things (rpm, never really tried urpmi). I tried to get urpmi set up but guess I did something a little wrong. Anyway, on redhat 9 with apt-get it's just so much more enjoyable to install stuff. No work at all, just sit back and watch it go... no dependency probs, no conflicts, everything a-ok (at least so far... )
  5. ok, but let's not overlook that currently I'm using redhat 9 and not mandrake. If I put in the old H-D in a new box that has a new mobo, I won't have to reinstall RH 9 ? This is the main thing that is bugging me. I hate re-doing things, although that's how you learn, right...
  6. has to be a joke. I admit I thought it was real at first though. Until I clicked on the "Day Care Raid" link at the bottom, and saw the blood spattered walls as the results of a microsoft anti-piracy software raid...
  7. thanks for all the comments. let's see if I can recap what everyone said: Ix says a 400 mobo should work out of the box. Also, Steve says I should at least get a 400. OK, a 400 it shall be. The 600 chipset has some extra work to do, so since I don't have to "live on the edge", think I'll stick with a 400. I'm happy at the "upper mid-level". The nForce also appears to need extra work. Steve recommends a Barton core amd 2500 rather than the 2400. In fact, I did ask the tech guy at the store "so what's a 'Barton' ?" Can't remember what he said. But I'm gonna definately get a quote on one. Thanks Steve. As I mentioned at first, I'd like to just change my H-D to the new box (which I've never done before). I didn't think of the fact that since I installed RedHat 9 on a P-III machine, I may not be able just to switch it to a new AMD 2500 machine... :? Gowator says that if the new machine has more RAM (it will) then I would have to reinstall anyway. Hmmm... wonder if I just put a 256 stick in my new machine (same amount of RAM as my old machine), put in the old H-D, see if it boots. If boots OK, THEN install the other 256 stick, for a total of 512RAM... :? Or do you have to reinstall or recompile either way... :? jeez, this is more complicated than I expected. Thanks to Gowator for the "precompiled" offer, but I'm on RH 9 for the time being (I really like it so far - nice looking distro) Guess I wouldn't mind re-installing RH 9 in the new box. The original install went pretty easy. And I haven't really done too much tinkering yet. Think the only things I've done was to fix the nvidia 3D drivers, install & setup apt-get, and do an apt-get upgrade. Also I apt-getted k3b. Hmmm... now that I think about it, I'd rather re-use my current RH install in the new box, if possible. I hate re-doing things.
  8. just installed the windoze version on my win2k box. This weekend will put it on my linux box. Signed, a former MSoffice user (loser?)
  9. thanks Ix. Yeah, I was asking the guy at the hardware store about the 400 chipset, but I guess he recommended the 133 board cuz I told him it was for a linux machine - he probably didn't recommend the newest stuff. I suppose I'll get a quote on a 400 board. I just didn't want to mess with kernel stuff, but maybe that is just for the "nforce" boards ? What about pulling the H-D with rh 9 from my old machine and putting it in the new one...? No problem right? I mean it should boot up OK... :?
  10. Current box: intel P-III 1000, 256 RAM, 40Gb H-D, nVidia GeF 2, TDK CD burner, RedHat 9 Desired box: AMD Athlon XP2400, 512 RAM, same H-D, nVidia GeF 3 (I have one laying around), and a Lite-on DVD burner LDW-411S (to replace the TDK CD burner) I have my eye on an MSI K7T-Turbo 2 mobo with an AMD Athlon XP2400 processor. I can't believe linux would have any problems with that mobo (KT133A-Via). Is that correct? I have seen other threads here where people are talking about having to patch the kernel to get some mobo stuff to work. I want a mobo that works out of the box. I don't believe this mobo has onboard LAN or onboard video. So basically what I'm asking is if there would be any probs with this mobo. I just want to take out the H-D from my old case and put it in my new case, since the H-D has a good working install of RH 9. I've never just taken a H-D out of one box and put it in another.... this should work ok right? this thread kind of replaces the dvd drive comments thread I first started...
  11. I ended up buying the Sony DRU-510A for my win2k machine and also buying DVD X-Copy Xpress. Have not installed any of it yet. Thinking about getting one of those new Lite-on LDW-411S multi-format DVD burners for my linux box. The 411S is a new drive that is replacing the 401S mentioned in the first post.
  12. I'm using RH 9 currently, which came with OpenOffice 1.0. If I do an apt-get install openoffice, will it get me the current rc5, or not ? in other words, do I need to wait for the final oo 1.1 before I do an apt-get ? OpenOffice is just an example, this pertains to any software that is in "rc" stage - does apt-get get the current rc, or last "final" release....
  13. so is this bittorrent the same thing as the "jigdo" (jigsaw download) that Debian is pushing... :? I tried the jigdo thing with the debian CDs, but got confused with the command line prompts, and didn't do it right. Ended up just getting the deb CDs the regular slow ftp way. or is it something different ?
  14. Ha. Me too. I've been casually screwing around with linux off & on for over a year, but just recently decided to actually get serious and learn it. After learning the basics on RH, I'll probably buy some debian CDs from someplace that donates a portion of the money to debian.
  15. Update: I bought the Mini Virtually Indestructible Keyboard (USB) and RedHat recognized it great while rebooting. It works perfectly. Even if I had problems, I could have gotten one of those usb to ps2 adapters and worked around it, but not necessary... :) Linux is amazing me more & more every day
  16. I wanted to put this under the Hardware section, but I figured that was supposed to be mandrake only. Anyway, I was thinking of picking up one of those little Mini Virtually Indestructible Keyboards and using it on my linux box. The small table I have my linux box on, with my monitor & full size keyboard is getting crowded. Plus with the VIK I can spill my drinks on it, and drop my ashes on it... So I was wondering if a usb keyboard would give redhat 9 any problems. I did search this board for "usb keyboard" and I saw quite a few threads regarding various problems. My linux box does not currently have any usb devices. The mobo has two usb 1 ports on the back. thanks for any comments
  17. I want to get into DVD burning. I have 2 machines, a win2k box, and a RH 9 box. I'd like to learn DVD burning using both boxes. In other words, I'd like to put, say a Sony DRU +R-R+RW-RW unit in my win2k box (which has an ATI Radeon 8500 all-in-wonder) and say a Lite-On DVD / CD burner in my RH 9 box. My win2k box currently has a DVD-ROM drive (sony) and a TDK CD burner. The DVD-ROM has just recently stopped playing any DVD movies, but it reads discs fine (like if I am installing software from CD, the DVD-ROM installs the software great). However, if you put in a DVD movie it just does nothing, and if you right-click on the drive, it says "no disc" or "insert disc" or something like that :? It used to play DVD movies great, when you insert a movie, either winDVD would come up or ATI's DVD player would come up and I could play the movie. Now nothing. The above problem is really not that important, since I want to replace both the DVD-ROM and the CD-RW with a "do everything" burner. But I'd like to know why its happening. I read a review of the Lite-on LDW-401S DVD/CD burner on linuxhardware.org. I'd like to maybe put something like that in my linux box, although I'd prefer a drive that does +R and -R. Is anyone here sucessfully burning DVD movies under linux? Is it a major hassle to get set up right? Note: I want to back up some of my most favorite movies, in case they get scratched or something and don't play right anymore. I also want to put some of my VHS tapes on DVD (things that are not available on DVD). Since I own everything, there's no need for a legal argument starting here. I also want to burn all my compact-vhs home movies to DVD. anyway, any comments on the above appreciated.
  18. At the grub selection screen where it asks me Linux or DOS, if I chose DOS I wonder what would happen ? I don't want to try it without knowing the consequences. Guess I'll just remove the line from grub.conf.
  19. ok, doesn't matter I guess. So far I'm really liking my redhat system. Maybe its just that the few problems I was having have now been fixed. bvc & cybrjackal got the boot problem fixed for me, and I figured out installing, setting up, and using apt-get. Also I've been in a terminal alot more over the last couple of days than in a gui. Pretty soon I'll be doing everything at CL thanks again for fixing the boot problem.
  20. ok I just did the grub install. It installed Ok, and then I did a reboot (without the floppy) and it booted great from the H-D. Thanks ! :D BTW: when the grub gui came up, it gave me the choice of RedHat or DOS... :? I formatted over the win98 partition a few weeks ago. And when I installed Mandrake 9.0, I told it to make a vfat partition, in case I wanted to share files with my win2k box. And then I installed RH 9 over my mandrake install, but I kept the vfat partition. Is that why I get a DOS option at grub - because I have a vfat partition ? Or do I really still have DOS on here ?
  21. ok I just ran the /sbin/lilo -u and I got: Fatal: open /boot/boot.0300: No such file or directory Maybe lilo isn't installed, that's why it won't boot from H-D ?
  22. ok thanks. i'm at work now :? so I'll try that when I get home. Last night, before I posted here, I did think that I probably needed to do the /sbin/lilo instead of just lilo, so I did a "locate lilo". But I had stuff to do last night (some college courses) and I didn't have time to mess with learning linux. So I did it the easy way (lazy way?) and posted the question here...
  23. I wasn't complaining ... :) I do the same thing all the time. In fact, recently I made my first post over on the LQ board (using someone else's thread), and I kind of got jumped on a little for hijacking :? that's why I live on this board...
  24. getting back to the point of the original post... I think installing apt-get and getting it set up properly (adding locations to sources.list) should be one of the first priorities for a noobie. I have to admit that during my linux experience off & on for a couple of months, that I have been very turned off by software installation problems. Now that I have discovered apt-get, well, I love linux again ! Now if I can use apt to install k3b, it'll be a gen-u-wine miracle... I just haven't ever gotten that program installed (with rpm). I'm using rh 9 at the moment, but does apt also work with mandrake ?
  25. says command not found when I do the lilo -u I'm doing it as root from the root dir
