  1. First of all, a big and warm welcome to MUB. If you haven't done so yet, you should make certain that you have installed the ...ntfs-3g rpm and its dependencies It enables you to read and write to Windows partitions. Without it you haven't got a chance. Cheers. John.
  2. Hi Neddie. Easy to answer. When I do a direct download it takes approx 7.5 hours whereas torrent can take me anything up to 24 or more hours. Cheers. John.
  3. For those who don't want to use bit-torrent but rather a straight download, here is a site I found from a chap at another website. ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrake/official/iso/2010.1/ I am currently downloading from it right now. It was Djenning of the UK and he posted it at the Mandriva Forum last Friday. Cheers. John.

    eSATA

Thanks Ian. What you say does seem to make sense. However I do use USB sticks, so sure there will be a problem as you describe, and one I can do without. You say........"However, when it is connected, you can mount it by clicking it because it won't do it automatically. With an fstab entry it should supercede the udev calls, and so udev won't attempt to mount it automatically. However, double-clicking the drive will do it."........Where do you mean "double click it" exactly ??. Cheers. John.

    eSATA

Thanks Silver Surfer and Ken. The problem with having the drive listed in fstab means that the drive has to be switched on all the time or problems occur whenever rebooting. Possibly I might mount it and list in in fstab anyway, and just have to remember to switch it back on prior to rebooting then having completed rebooting just switching it off again. The drive has got Western Digitals' 5 year warranty but I would like to extend the drive life well beyond that since I plan it to be my long life storage of Music, Photographs and Personal Videos. I am still open to other suggestions on how to get an eSATA auto-mounting similar to USB. Cheers. John.

    eSATA

Just a bump. Any ideas, anyone, please. Cheers. John.

    eSATA

I seem to remember in the back of my mind, reading somewhere, that it is possible to have an external SATA Hard Drive be automatically mounted when it is switched on at its eSATA mount, and have it appear in the Device Notifier, the same as when a USB Device is connected. I haven't been able to work it out nor can I remember where I read it. I am presently using the USB Mode of connection of the External Hard Drive mounting unit but I find it terribly slow (It is USB-2) and the drive is a new 750Gb Western Digital SATA II unit being used for mass storage of videos that I am working on which were taken during my recent DEC/JAN visit to Maine in the US. This external mount unit has option for USB or eSATA connection so it only requires a cable change. Obviously Sata is considerably faster than USB-2 so I would like to use it instead. If I mount the eSATA via the MCC then the problem arises that if I switch off the eSATA and happen to reboot, then Startup has problems looking for a Drive that appears to be missing or maybe faulty. Can anyone help me here, please. Cheers. John.
  8. It tries to run with the new nouveau or what ever it is called which doesn't work and I tried (using vim) and changed that to nv but it won't run on that either. My 2010 .0 is running like a charm and yes I am running the 9400 Nvidia. Is the general silence here an indication that practically no one is trying this bets. :D Cheers. John.
  9. I have tried a number of times to install the new beta but always with the same result. During the post install settings, when ever I click "test" in the graphical setting up, It fails and drops back to a text format that suggests rebooting. Can't say I am very impressed with a beta release that cannot complete an install process. The DVD was burnt at slowest speed and also K3B confirmed data matched correctly so I do not suspect the DVD. I did manage in the first attempt to complete the install but only because I did not do the Graphics test. However when I then booted into the OS, I got that same stupid nonsense (as I did on the times I tried out the betas of 2010.0 ) where you were presented with a popup that asked to install something or other and even though you did so and whatever was installed, the same stupid popup returned. Back then I gave up and I don't intend to waste too much more time on this beta either. Anyone else try this beta, if so what did you experience. Cheers. John. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  10. Thanks Ken. I find that I mostly needed the tool for other friends machines when I had the earlier CD. I haven't ever needed it for any of my Machines. Photorec installed will suffice my needs for the present especially since this the only time I have ever had to recover data and then it was from a device that wasn't even part of my computer but from an other device. I have 6 different flash cards for my two cameras and a couple are about 3 years old so this experience has been a good forewarning of what might happen more often in the future. Actually I feel more relaxed now that I have a means and a degree of understanding of how to resolve such an event should it arise again (and I feel it will when I least expect it). This experience was also my very first task done with only using the CLI. :) Cheers. John
  11. Hi, Ken. I have followed your advice and downloaded Gparted and burnt it to Disk. So now I have got it should I need it again in the near future. Very good advice. Nexus, OpenShot sure is a goodie. I came across it by accident on the net and when I looked into Mandriva 2010 was surprised to see it there all on its lonesome. I had tried most of the other more well known ones but found them to be difficult to get to grips with. I am still in the learning curve for OpenShot so it will be a little while before I am totally at ease with it. It seems a lot more user friendly to my way of thinking. Cheers. John.
  12. Hello Nexus. 5mins to search via google, 3mins to download and install. 10 mins to read and get to understand the routine to be conducted. Then the amazing thing is that it took exactly 5 minutes for the extraction. Less than a half an hour from wo to go. This time is for a 2gb memory card so obviously the time taken would be determined by the size of the card. The developers emphasize that the amount of Computer Memory you have will also determine extraction time. I have 4Gb (4 x 1) of DDR2 Corsair Memory so that helped a huge amount. This is one application that together with Filelight and OpenShot Video, Will be regularly installed on all my OSs in future. Cheers. John.
  13. Thanks Ian. As I said in my update in my previous post, the camera reformatted the Card successfully. Photorec allocated new numbering to the recovered images. While the majority were in proper sequence some were mixed about but with a little effort I renumbered the mis-ordered ones to get the series correct even if the numbering is not exactly numerically sequential. I consider this was an infinitely small price to pay for what could have been lost work. I will also be making a donation to the team to help keep up the good work. Cheers. John.
  14. Thanks for your contribution, Ken. What sort of thing could have caused the Partition Table to be corrupted???. I haven't tried reformatting the card in the camera yet. Would that be capable of fixing it ???. I'll download Gparted and burn it to CD. I gave away my earlier copy. Cheers. John UPDATE :- I managed to reformat the card in the camera. The Card is operating correctly again. I have done 3 lots of 10 shots each and it performs normally again. Sincere thanks for everyones help, especially Ians' fantastic lead. This case is now SOLVED.
  15. Thanks Greg. Here is the result:- [john@dethermy ~]$ /sbin/udevadm monitor --udev monitor will print the received events for: UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing UDEV [1271205153.013435] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.5/usb1/1-7/1-7:1.0/host6/target6:0:0/6:0:0:0 (scsi) UDEV [1271205153.050198] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.5/usb1/1-7/1-7:1.0/host6/target6:0:0/6:0:0:0/block/sdc (block) Does the word (block) have significance ???. Ianw. Wow wow wow. I did as you suggested and installed an rpm of TestDisk which contains Photorec. In Konsole as root typed in photorec and followed the directions.(You MUST read the "How to" documentation First) It recovered every picture and video that was on the card. What I found as a result of this recovery was that the total was 1.9Gb and the card is rated as 2.0Gb but is detected by the system as Approx.1.9Gb so I am wondering if that has caused a jamup of some kind. I also found that 26 files (about 308Mb) from a shoot back in Sept2008 were still on the card even though I am pretty sure I had deleted them. I have used the card numerous times since 2008 and would have normally picked that up because I download the folder rather than the individual pics. Very strange indeed. Since I hope that the Card can be saved as well I did the fdisk -l that you requested and got the following result. :- [root@dethermy john]# fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320071851520 bytes 240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 41345 cylinders Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes Disk identifier: 0x69205244 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 846 6395728+ 83 Linux /dev/sda2 847 41345 306172440 5 Extended /dev/sda5 847 2296 10961968+ 83 Linux /dev/sda6 2297 2365 521608+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda7 5971 33911 211233928+ 83 Linux /dev/sda8 33912 41345 56201008+ 83 Linux /dev/sda9 2366 3214 6418408+ 83 Linux /dev/sda10 3215 4629 10697368+ 83 Linux /dev/sda11 4630 5970 10137928+ 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order Disk /dev/sdb: 164.7 GB, 164696555520 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 20023 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 2728 20023 138930120 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 1 2727 21904596 5 Extended /dev/sdb5 1 1040 8353737 83 Linux /dev/sdb6 1041 1170 1044193+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sdb7 1171 2727 12506571 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order Disk /dev/sdc: 2048 MB, 2048901120 bytes 64 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1008 cylinders Units = cylinders of 3968 * 512 = 2031616 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Disk /dev/sdc doesn't contain a valid partition table Now that I have the Data saved I hope there is a way that I can reformat the card or whatever needs to be done. 16. Hello Greg. Thanks for coming in on this. I get the following both without and also with the card inserted in the reader. I can't see any difference between them so I think the reader cannot see the card.I know the reader is Ok because it reads the Kingston card AOK. I have also included the Kingston card result. 17. I have the above item with loads of pictures I took recently on a long round trip. I know the picture data recorded in the camera AOK because I was able to view the various images on the Camera right up till I got home. I removed the card and inserted it into a card reader on my computer (Mandriva2010). The card reader gave a few (3) orange blips on its led but nothing more happened. The Device Notifier did not show a usb device detected. Returned the Compact flash into the Camera but the Camera gave an error message that the "Compact Flash Card not initiated". I was very careful to make sure that the Camera was Switched off before any actions of removing or installing the card was done and also all images were previously set to "Protected" in the Camera to ensure no accidental deletion. I had no trouble dealing with a 2Gb XD card at that time, both before and after experiencing this problem so I believe the Computer, Card reader and Camera are ok. I don't have a Windows computer to be able to see if it is a fat32 problem on the Compact Flash Card or whatever. A Near identical Kingston 16Gb Compact Flash works flawlessly in the Camera and the Computers' Card reader. That seems to tell that the SanDisk Compact Flash is faulty and nothing else. So..........My question is this. Would I be likely to have any luck recovering the images by launching a Live Mandriva CD or PCLinuxOS CD and trying to read the card that way ???????????. I have found that there is a company that SanDisk recommends for data recovery from SanDisk Compact Flash Cards and it seems pretty modest for 2Gb Cards which this is. I would like to save the money and inconvenience if at all possible. Any advice is greatly welcomed. Cheers. John.
  18. I voted way back, shortly after it opened the poll. I don't think it means very much at all though. ubuntu shubuntu I will stick with Mandriva. By the way Firefox is not remembering my ID and password even though "remember" is selected. Any ideas ?. ( yes I know it is out of context. :-) ) Cheers. John.
  19. Certainly /root has a finite size as set up originally but /user in root can increase to what it needs within the total /root partition and is limited only to the available space in /root. Hence no wasted space in /usr. :-) In 6+ years of using Mandrake/Mandriva, I have never felt the need to make a separate /usr partition. Cheers Ken. John.
  20. 50Gb for /usr is totally unnecessary. A /usr is automatically created and increases in size as it needs to. As said by others, again you are wasting space by having 8Gb of swap, 500Mb is more than enough with that much memory but 1Gb is OK. Ideally you should use about 10Gb for /home and put all the remainder of space in a partition for Pictures Music and Videos etc. This is so that if you want to clean up /home at anytime, you do not accidently lose that Media stuff. Cheers. John.
  21. Hello Alien. Welcome to MUB. As Scarecrow says, it is a Windows application and looks a little bit like Filelight. (Which appears to be and is likely to be far superior in presentation and function). Please keep in mind that the vast majority of Linux users are already fairly well versed about Windows and its various third party programs and have come to Linux to get away from them. :) I hope you are not presenting this as spam because if it is it will be quickly removed. Cheers. John.
  22. You opened a console but you did not go to root. Type in su then press enter and type in your root password, press enter, then type in the nvidia-xconfig --composite, press enter again. Cheers and welcome to MUB. John.
  23. Thanks to everyone who came in on this. My perception proved to be correct and bolstered by your support I bought a new video card and the computer has been running like a dream ever since. The new card is not a Video Game standard as was the original but the owner is happy with that. Cheers to all. John.
  24. Hello Alek. Welcome to MUB and be assured all Mandriva users, newb or otherwise, :D are welcome here. I am glad you have discovered Mandriva since it unfortunately seems to have been a hidden secret for a while. :) I cannot help you regarding programming but you will find members here who can help you. A lot of members are naturally tied up with family activitys taking precedence over this Christmas and New Years time so don't be put off by some delay in getting responses. Happy New Year to you and every success in your studies. Cheers. John.
  25. I think the cli tells you right there that you are trying to install older packages than are already installed there. I suspect that the Plf package is "the fly in the ointment", namely the xine-plugins. You shouldn't have trouble if you stick with the Mandriva xine-plugins. Cheers. John.
