  1. It would seem then that a number of players for Windows can handle TS. So that clears that up. Now what Mandriva or Linux programs can convert the .ts to mpeg-2 in Mandriva ??? as mentioned could be done within a Windows application. Cheers. John.
  2. A follow up. I have downloaded emails three times so far, and they all keep getting dumped into Wastebin and none are labelled as Spam even though some obviously are. I keep checking the AntiVirus wizard and as you can see in the snapshot that the three boxes are ticked but if I open the wizard immediately after again, I find that the three boxes are unticked again. In other words it is not saving the settings. The snapshot enclosed is virtually identical to the one in my 2008-Spring. It appears that either or both of the anti-spam and anti-virus are not working properly. Cheers. John.
  3. Thanks Scarecrow. If I burn it to a data DVD, would my friends in the US, who only use Windows, be able to play it back ???. I am pleased to know what TS is now as Mpeg, and not AVC. Cheers. John.
  4. This was a clean install to 2009-Spring and that included /home. Therefore I needed to import my bookmarks including my bookmarks toolbar from my 2008 Spring. In the past this was no problem because when one opened "Organise Bookmarks", one could select the default Bookmarks Toolbar that was installed during the Firefox installation and delete it ,this then enabled the imported Bookmarks Toolbar to be installed in its place (this was not enabled to install until the default one was deleted.). This has only become a problem since Firefox3. Cheers. John.
  5. I am using Kaffeine to capture video from terrestial Digital TV Broadcasts. It saves the capture as a .ts file. It seems that the capture is an avi codec. If that is correct, does anyone know why the file would be named TS instead of AVC and would it make any difference if It was renamed .avc ???. I have found most all video editing programs recognise .avc but none recognise .ts. Players such as Dragon Player and Totem play the files with no seeming concern. Please, any ideas welcome. Cheers. John.
  6. Thanks Lexicon. I have always been aware of that one so that is not the problem, thanks for mentioning it though for other new members who may not understand that point. Thanks YaaYaa. I just checked the Spam and Antivirus settings as you suggested and just noticed three of the tick boxes were not checked in the Antivirus (Which I usually do but must have missed this time) and it did indeed point to the wastebin. I have now ticked the boxes and will respond again when I next get some incoming emails. I presume the following:- Without the boxes ticked I think there was no checking of the emails and for safety sake and security, everything is shunted to the waste bin as a precautionary measure, where as if the emails are examined by the AntiVirus program then if the is no problem found, the mail is passed to the inbox as instructed. I will let you and everyone know if this proves to be the case because it will be handy for everyone to know for the future. Cheers. John.
  7. In attempting to just import my bookmarks from Mandriva2008-Spring into Mandriva2009-Spring, I cannot install the copied Bookmark Toolbar nor delete the default Bookmark Toolbar. This was possible in 2008-Spring when Firefox 2.5 was used but is now not possible in Firefox3 in both 2008.1 and 2009.1. In the Organise Bookmarks there used to be a choice in one of the menus to do this. Now there is no such choice. I can import the Bookmarks from my earlier OS such as the 2008-Spring, so that is not a problem, just is now no way to mount/install the imported Toolbar. The only way that I could get the toolbar in place was to copy over the complete .mozilla folder from my 2008-Spring and overwrite the one in the new 2009.1. ( always keep copies of a number of the hidden files contained in .home/account into a safe store partition for these kind of problems) Any ideas welcome, please. Cheers. John. 8. In 2008-Spring (with Firefox3) I had a font size that enabled most of my Bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar to be visible on the toolbar. Despite having identical font size settings in the Firefox3 in Mandriva2009-Spring, the font size is slightly larger in the Bookmark Toolbar with the result that a number of the Bookmarks are no longer visible (although still available by using the arrow at the right hand end of the toolbar). Any ideas please, anyone ???. Cheers. John. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  9. I have now setup Mandriva2009-Spring, with KDE4, as my main OS. I have most things working reasonably well. ( I have have kept my 2008-Spring fully functional on a smaller HDD as a backup OS) I have been able to copy over all my received and sent mail from 2008-Spring and also my settings. However despite all this, all new incoming mail is going into the Wastebin instead of the inbox to which is directed in the settings (I rechecked the settings so the problem is not from there). Fortunately I had not setup auto clearing of the wastebin upon closing Kmail. Has any one else countered this or have a suggestion of how this might be overcome ???. Cheers. John.
  10. Two days ago I used the orphan delete thing and I first checked the list to make sure that no application was listed. None were listed so gave the OK and all was OK even after a later reboot (Went back temporarily to my faithful 2008-Spring). Perhaps a reminder to look before you leap. :D All part of the fun of learning Mandriva. :D Cheers. John.
  11. I have 6 set up. I find it very convenient when I have a number of applications running to have each one on its own desktop. I can back and forth as and when I like. e.g., On No.6 I have Xmms running with all the music i have recently downloaded and Konqueror open to that Particular folder so that any piece that I hear that I dislike, I can delete before later transferring those remaining files to a saved folder for later storing on a DVD disk and also a backup Hard drive. In the Meantime I may have Firefox open and downloading one of a large number of likely albums from Jamendo. While I am waiting for one to completely Download before selecting the next one, I may be Playing Mahjongg-3D on desktop 3. On desktop 5, I have UPS Monitor running. To change from one to the other only requires a single mouse click so what could be easier. :D Sure I could run all of those applications on one desktop on my 24 inch monitor but with all the real estate i have with 6 desktops available, why would I not want to take advantage of it ???. :) RVDowning, I can hear you singing that from here. I'm singing the harmony. :lol2: Cheers. John
  12. Sometimes the mirror can be down or in the process of updating and resyncing. You have the option of waiting a while and coming back to the mirror later or choosing a different mirror, as you have done. Cheers. John.
  13. I agree with Scarecrow. I have always gotten it from PLF so it installs as an ordinary (Mandriva) rpm. Unless you do it this way then you are making work for yourself. Set up for PLF by using easy-Urpmi. Cheers. John.
  14. I have found TDK to be the best and most reliable discs. Recently burned a TDK dual layer disc and it worked perfectly right from the beginning. KB3 recognised my 7.0GB of data, and when I inserted the TDK dual layer disk it burned it without hesitation. The burn check reported AOK and subsequent use of the disk showed all data is AOK. I have also found Verbatum to be quite good but at one stage I did have problems (years ago) (might have been the dye problem mentioned earlier). That is when I tried TDK and have never looked back ever since. Cheers. John.
  15. Nice going Stef. Most of Australia has been moving to Solar hot water heating fo some years. There are some five or more national Manufacturers in Australia and as far as I know little if any system is imported.( A lot of the early design/development and Manufacture originated here in Australia). I think most of the State Governments are running subsidy schemes to increase the rate of installations. Wealthier home owners are also installing roof solar electricity panels as well, as you have done. After I return from my planned visit to friends in the USA during December and January 2009/2010, I plan on setting up a roof solar electricity setup just for running my desktop computer and 24" LCD Monitor plus preipherals. Since I rent, I will need a removable system. Cheers. John.
  16. So do I, Daniel, so do I. Cheers. John.
  17. Apart from the kernel you have booted into, and assuming it is working as you desire, then there is no need for the remainder of them at all. They are just taking up disc space. They have zero connection to anything unless booted into so Use MCC and delete them all but take care not to uninstall the one you are booted into (MCC will stop you anyway). They all serve different requirements which are mostly more specialised but not needed for usual computer use. Cheers. John.
  18. When you are setting up in MCC to connect via a router, you are most likely making the common mistake of selecting ADSL. That is incorrect, you must select LAN and NOT ADSL. It should only be a case of making a few clicks through and not fiddling around with PPP*** or what ever. Have used LAN for the past 5 years and have NEVER had to stuff around, despite numerous rebuilds and even dozens of installs. Cheers. John.
  19. Open MCC. Click on .....Software Management. Click on....Configure media sources for install and update. In ....Configure Media, remove the ticks (or "checks" in USA) alongside the CD lines. Close out and you will be done. If you haven't already done so you should set-up the updates while here. Cheers. John.
  20. I agree 100% with Tux. I have 3.0.8 installed and did so just by doing regular urpmi based updates via MCC. Why do things the hard way when simple and efficient methods are available ???. Cheers. John.
  21. Hi mittfh, log into the following website....................http://www.kde-look.org/................. and click on .....System Sounds. There are loads to choose from and they cover all tastes. They can be used in Gnome as well so they are not KDE specific. Cheers. John
  22. Just an aside to Lexicon. Congratulations on you wonderful progress in English.  I have noted your posts from your very first one and you have battled on and involved yourself in lots of discussions. I especially admire people like yourself since I can only cope with one language, my own English. :D Cheers. John.
  23. Hello FFI. I could be wrong but I think you have misunderstood Kens comment. I don't think that is what he inferred at all. In fact I think he is saying that while user instigated updates may be OK normally he thinks it is a bad idea in the long term and runs against the best security practices of the past. On that I agree with him. Cheers. John.
  24. I too am very happy with 2008-Spring. Found 2009 nearly impossible to get my head around. Tried all the pre-releases of 2009.1 and still not been impressed. I have PCLinuxOS-2009 on a second drive to play around with and like it a lot. I will try 2009.1 Official but it will have to be a vast improvement on what I have seen so far to sway me. Yes FFI, Iam talking KDE here. I don't know about the Gnome side of things because I don't have Gnome installed anywhere. It is likely great but is not to my personal taste and since it is personal taste is the reason I don't knock Gnome, I used to until I wised up. :-) I suspect I will be sticking with 2008-Spring for a long time into the future. Cheers. John.
  25. Every time you install a new kernel and then select to boot into it, you must expect to reinstall the video driver even though you are not changing the driver. Hence when you reboot you come up to a terminal. xorg.conf has had the driver listed as nvidia but at this stage the nvidia driver is no longer actually installed so you have two choices. 1. If you are using the proprietary nvidia driver then you can reinstall it as this point and reboot ( which is the simplest ). 2. If you are using the Mandriva nvidia driver then you need to get into Mandriva first. (This is the method I use but others may have easier or simpler methods. If so then please offer them but don't be critical of mine). I use the terminal (console) that I have come to here and go root. then I type in ..........<vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf>........press enter. I look for the nvidia driver line then I press the <i> key and use the arrow keys to the end of the word "nvidia" and use the back space key so it now reads "nv" only. Press the Esc key then type .........:wq.........and then enter . If you then type reboot and press enter you will boot into your account as normal and using MCC you can do your Mandriva nvidia driver reinstall no trouble. I might add that I never have troubles regarding newer kernels released via updates and I run this routine each and every time. I learned long ago that installing kernels from cooker is not really worth the effort for just normal computer usage. Kudos to those that do so for experimental purposes for without you there would not be the debugging that we all benefit from. Cheers. John.
