  1. Firstly, a warm welcome to MUB. You say you managed to erase your bios while you were in Mandriva ???. I don't think so. Other more experienced posters can correct me if I am wrong. I don't believe Mandriva was responsible for your problem at all. Sure you can erase partitions by doing something incorrectly while in the OS or while installing an OS but usually you cannot do anything to the bios from an OS, you generally have to to enter the bios BEFORE booting into the OS ( except for programs designed especially for reflashing the bios which can be done with more recent modern motherboards). I think you may have erased your MBR (Master Boot Record) instead which has nothing to do with the bios. To restore the MBR, insert your CD or DVD you used to install the OS, reboot and use the Repair/Rescue as you reboot into the Rescue mode of the Disk. Select Restore MBR. Cheers. John.
  2. Backwards compatibility, regarding installs, in reality doesn't exist today. You are far better of doing a clean install and that includes redoing/reformatting /home and redoing your user settings again in /home. Members will have noted that recently I had a large number of posts with problems related to Firefox and Kmail. I have since proven that although I did a clean install and this included /home, the problems occurred when I copied in saved .kde and .mozilla files from 2008-Spring into 2009-Spring. My 2009-Spring is now reasonably OK. (Kaffeine4 is a total unusable disaster. Kscd is pretty ugly and no real way of changing it other than colour.) So I suggest following Ians advice and do as he suggests or do as I suggest, namely wipe /home clean and re-setup /home from scratch. It is much quicker and avoids problems in the first place. Cheers. John
  3. Have you got the enclosed plugin ???. Cheers. John.
  4. Hello Payasam. Does your Epson scanner have a firewire output as well as the usual USB ???. If it does then connect it up that way instead of using USB. Not only is it quicker but also has none of the sometime setting up difficulties . There is no need to setup any packages from Avasys or anyone else. You only need to install sane and Xsane. They will in turn pull in the remaining packages needed. I think you have been doing the old hard road of doing things regarding scanning. :) I only use Epson scanners and Xsane ( have done for past 5 years and 3 different Epson Models) and even with a complete OS fresh install, I have to setup NOTHING. From the moment I select Xsane from the MENU, I am able to scan immediately. The same applys to my friends Epson Multi purpose units which use USB connection. (I installed their systems too). Cheers for now. John.

    Kmail

Thanks for that info, Angst. I appreciate it. Cheers. John.

    Kmail

Thanks Greg. Yes the boxes are set at appropriate Spam and Ham. That was one of the first things I checked. I also checked that there was an icon selected for each of Spam and Ham as well. I can hardly wait for an update ffor kmail in the hope that that fixes the problem. Cheers. John.

    Kmail

In Kmail........ Folder there is no Column View -> Total. Right clicking on Folder gives a menu for selecting Total in View Columns (as well as some other other choices such as Icon Size etc.). Ticking this choice is not saved and has to be redone each time KMail is reopened. Suggestions Please, since this was not a problem in Kmail in 2008-Spring. Cheers. John.

    Kmail

In Kmail I am finding that when a Spam email gets past the Anti-Spam filter and turn up in the Inbox and I click the Toolbar Spam Icon, its is correctly sending it to the Wastebin but it is not tagging the email as Spam. It will also not tag an email as Ham (genuine mail) when the Not Spam Icon on the Toolbar is clicked. Any ideas please. Cheers. John.
  9. Hello Isadora. When I looked at your screenshot, I could only see the one entry in the Available filters section. Taking that as an idea I deleted everything in that section, closed out, logged out then back in again. I reopened Kmail and did the Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus Wizards again. Downloaded some new emails............Biiiinnnnggggoooo. Two new emails were in my Inbox and and three were in my Wastebin. The two in the Inbox were clean and the three in the Wastebin were truly Spam. Later on I did another email check and there were one in each of Inbox and Wastebin and again they were filtered correctly. I checked the Filter Rules again and there were 6 entrys in the Available Filters list compared with about a dozen earlier. So at least a major part of the Problem is solved. There is still the two minor problems of the Folder..........View Columns is not being saved when ticked (US=checked), the other being that files are not being tagged as Spam when the Spam Icon is manually clicked. I will start a new Thread since the original problem is solved. Thanks Isadora for sticking with me, and thanks also to Lexicon and Silver Surfer as well. Cheers. John. SOLVED.
  10. I uninstalled and wiped everything Mozilla or Firefox and did a fresh install. Now only have one Firefox Folder. Am now trying out the other suggestions regarding Chrome etc. Cheers. John.
  11. I tried the backup/restore routine. In my 2008-Spring I used the backup routine and saved the file to a usb memory stick then transferred it to my zstore in 2009-Spring. Ran the restore and yea the Bookmarks and Bookmarks Toolbar was installed in place without further fiddling. I wish I had known this routine long ago, it would have saved the effort used in doing the import Bookmarks old routine. I tried doing it again doing the import bookmarks routine but the Toolbar was not installed, so Firefox has definitely dropped that ability. The new routine (for me) will be the default from now on. :D Thanks to all who offered assistance and especially who suggested Backup/Restore with the .json file. Cheers. John. SOLVED.
  12. In the .mozilla/firefox Folder I have found three folders.......4x2hxenp.default .......u1t2zmsi.default,,,,,,,,,and.......zbb5jlxg.default. They each contain the same sub folders.....adblockplus, bookmarkbackups, Cache, chrome, extensions... but the third one also has.....Offlinecache. Is it possible that Firefox is getting confused because of the three lots of firefox marked as .default ??? While I wait for some responses to this question, I will experiment by marking two of the subfolders at a time as old and see if just one in particular does the trick. I found this oddity thanks to Coverups earlier reference to Chrome which I went looking for. Cheers. John.
  13. Hi Isadora. I carefully compared the settings for filters in 2008-Spring and found a lot of repeat filter listings in the 2009-Spring so I deleted all that weren't the same as 2008. This improved things a little bit in that if I click on an email and labelled it as spam then it immediately went to the wastebin. It didn't do that before but it is still not tagged as spam. All new incoming mail is going straight to the wastebin and I have to keep moving the stuff I want to the Inbox. One other problem I have found is that although I keep setting the Local Folder for a Totals Column, it is not saving that instruction. Man this kmail version is really screwed up. I still need to find where the user settings data is stored apart from in kmail. Cheers. John.
  14. Hi Silver surfer. Yes I too am using the Mandriva Firefox. To all. Yes I have always saved my bookmarks as html. Had no idea of the json filing. My practice was to export my Bookmarks as html to a safe folder in another partition I labelled zstore. Then when I installed a New OS, I would import that html file into the new Firefox. When I completed I would do the 4 clicks as I described earlier and I was away. I never had used the Backup/Restore function in the past, didn't seem to need to. I will try that out and see if it does what i want. Hi Neddie. Your Quote :- "And as for the future, just save a copy of your bookmarks.html file after you've got it how you want it, and then import from there in the future." That is what I have been doing for years. :-) Cheers. John.
  15. Hi Coverup. Yes the thing worked AOK, and yes I didn't like the general look of it. What you say about the font starts to make some sense. What with the increasing use of larger LCD screens, Firefox might have increased the size of the font by one size to suit. Your Quote :- "Alternatively, in KDE 3.x one could allow KDE to take control over the appearance of GTK applications - there was an option for that in the KDE control center. You might want to try to find a similar option in KDE4.". I'll play around with that and let all know what I find. Cheers. John
  16. Thanks Silversurfer.. Yes there is no problem in Importing bookmarks into Firefox 3 or exporting them and it is no different in Australia. :D The problem is the Bookmarks Toolbar, that strip of website tabs you see across the lower part of the screenshots. That strip is a folder containing a number of website addresses and that folder is part of the Bookmarks list so when exporting or importing bookmarks ,that list goes with the general bookmark list. That Bookmarks Toolbar list needs to be installed for it to be viewable at the front of Firefox otherwise it can only be read by clicking on the Bookmarks button at the top to drop down the Bookmarks menu where the Bookmarks Toolbar can be read as just part of the Bookmarks Menu. I am starting to get the impression that not many people are familiar with the Bookmarks Toolbar aspect. Which might explain why many don't seem to understand what I am getting at. Cheers. John.
  17. I am trying to figure out how to install the Bookmarks Toolbar as shown in the accompanying snapshots. The first one is from 2008-Spring and the second is from my current, now main, 2009-Spring. It is presently in place as shown only because I Copied the entire Firefox user settings from 2008-Spring. As I moved forward from earlier Mandrivas and earlier Firefox versions I had no problems at all including 2008-Spring. But since 2008-Spring has upgraded to Firefox3 I can no longer use the old method in there anymore either. I cannot install the Bookmarks Toolbar into position by importing the Bookmarks, (which includes the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder) from a backup file (made by exporting Bookmarks from another OS) into Bookmarks---------> Organise Bookmarks and installing the Bookmarks Toolbar into place in lieu of the Default Bookmarks Toolbar. This used to be easily done in Firefox2.5 but seems not possible in Firefox3. I suspect that there is just a different procedure needed because surely the Firefox crew would not have overlooked this important need. Neddie , I can understand that you certainly don't see the problem. Doing what you say certainly puts all the Bookmarks in the Bookmarks heading at the top of Firefox. The imported Bookmarks Toolbar doesn't magically put itself into the position shown. Very likely one could fiddle around copying and pasting the imported Bookmarks Toolbar titles into the default Toolbar and then delete all the Bookmarks that were in the default Toolbar. In the past it only required 4 clicks, two to delete the default toolbar and 2 clicks to install the new imported one. Was quick, easy and required no fiddling about. Has anyone else got any suggestions, please. I am ok for now but what I am looking for is a solution for the future . Cheers. John.
  18. Hi, and thanks, Coverup. I installed the plugin you suggested and it works fine but it really wasn't what I was trying to achieve. What I am trying to do is reduce the size of the font in the Bookmarks Toolbar to the same size as I had in 2008-Spring. In there I tailored the Names and positions of the Bookmarks so that the ones I use multiple times per day are immediately visible. The Preferences............> Content ......Fonts seems only to effect the web pages themselves. As the toolbar font size is reduced, it effectively pulls more of the bookmarks into view as can be seen in the enclosed snapshots. So I hope someone can tell me how to change the Bookmarks Toolbar Font Size. Cheers. John
  19. Thanks Lexicon. I too thought that all user settings were in the places you suggested, but when I deleted those Kmail folders entirely and logged out and back in again I found that kmail was still setup and ready to use. So deleting both kmail and kmailrc in /home/john/.kde4/share/apps/ made no difference and I deleted /home/john/.kde/share/apps/kmail as well just to be sure. I just checked and that Kmail update does not seem to be in the update list yet. I will follow up on that one. I really want to find out where that user setup data is hidden away because other than a fresh OS install, which I do not want to do and will not do, there seems no way to make a clean install of Kmail. Thanks Isadora, I am going through all the filters and stuff to see if changing anything fixes the problem. The Inbox settings are not the problem as shown by result being the same no matter how many time I delete the ....../home/john/.kde4/share/apps/ kmail ...........Folder and are the same as I use in 2008-Spring. Cheers. John.
  20. Thanks isadora, I hope you do eventually remember how you solved the problem so I can hopefully make some headway too. Cheers. John.
  21. Thanks scarecrow, I will install vlc and see how it turns out. I note your other comment about renaming to mpg and see what transpires. Cheers. John.
  22. Thanks coverup. I have tried ti find what you suggest, but maybe it is older age catching up with me I cannot find how. Could you give me a more detailed howto, please, so I can try that even though I think it may not be the answer at this stage. Cheers. John.
  23. Sorry Spinynorman but I thought it might be a software problem but I guess it is an Art and design problem. Still, has anyone some suggestions since I can't see anything to change that I have not already changed to be identical to the 2008-Spring setup that has what I am aiming at ???. Cheers. John.
  24. Still no luck despite uninstalling Kmail, Spamassassin, and Clam and also deleting everything that "Find File" showed was a Kmail folder or email folder anywhere in the system, I found that upon reinstalling Kmail that all settings for kmail were already in place. In other words, all the settings have been kept some where else in the system but I haven't been able to find it to delete it. I have a suspicion that there is something in those settings that is causing this problem. I cannot get a totally clean install of Kmail to check this theory. Does anyone know where that file may be ???. Cheers. John.
