  1. Well I finally ran the fix order command, and I'm not sure but I think they are now in order? Thanks [root@localhost guest]# fdisk /dev/sda The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 9729. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Command (m for help): p Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0xb7e61057 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 2 2668 21422677+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda2 2158 2159 10369+ 1 FAT12 /dev/sda3 * 5343 9666 34732530 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda4 1 1 8001 83 Linux /dev/sda5 2 2 8001 6 FAT16 /dev/sda6 3 2157 17310006 83 Linux /dev/sda7 2160 2668 4088511 82 Linux swap / Solaris Partition table entries are not in disk order Command (m for help): m Command action a toggle a bootable flag b edit bsd disklabel c toggle the dos compatibility flag d delete a partition l list known partition types m print this menu n add a new partition o create a new empty DOS partition table p print the partition table q quit without saving changes s create a new empty Sun disklabel t change a partition's system id u change display/entry units v verify the partition table w write table to disk and exit x extra functionality (experts only) Command (m for help): x Expert command (m for help): x Command action b move beginning of data in a partition c change number of cylinders d print the raw data in the partition table e list extended partitions f fix partition order g create an IRIX (SGI) partition table h change number of heads i change the disk identifier m print this menu p print the partition table q quit without saving changes r return to main menu s change number of sectors/track v verify the partition table w write table to disk and exit Expert command (m for help): f Done. No change after reboot, and when I hit the fix command it says it's already in order, time to bring in the recovery software and move on. Thanks
  2. Hate to say it but I think you guys are right, using what you suggeted I was able to change the sda 3 to NTFS as you can see below. /dev/sda3 * 5343 9666 34732530 7 HPFS/NTFS but when I tried it on sdev1 I get this. /dev/sda1 2 2668 21422677+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA) Partition number (1-7): 1 Hex code (type L to list codes): 7 You cannot change a partition into an extended one or vice versa Delete it first. 3. Where did everybody go? I'm still in need of some help. Thanks
  4. Well to the best of my knowledge they were both NTFS and not FAT, like I mentioned before the last time I saw them was in that recovery utility that I ran, so I will run it again and see if aything has changed, and get back to you, let's hope it hasn't changed for my sake. Thanks Ok I did run Prosoft Meda tools again and the partitions are still there, the problems is that when I disable "write protection" the drive scan gets hung up at 97% which is as we know by now where the bad sectors are, in addition it refuses to recognize my usb hdd to restore to, in addition it suggests I clone the drive but every cloning program on that CD crashes or hangs so I can't do that, so here what the partitions say. NTFS Filesystemm volume found 32.62 GB I recognize to be drive C:: Fat 32 3473 NTFS Volume SMFT LBA 6291515 sectors per cluster 8 sectors per File Record : 2 SBitmap File Size 1019376
  5. Tried that this is what I got and so now I am convinced that my partiton got changed to Fat 32 somehow? Knosole output [root@localhost guest]# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/part1 NTFS signature is missing. Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Invalid argument The device '/dev/sda1' doesn't have a valid NTFS. Maybe you selected the wrong device? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/hda, not /dev/hda1)? Or the other way around? [root@localhost guest]# mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /mnt/part1 mount: mount point /mnt/part1 does not exist [root@localhost guest]# also here is the output of dmesg, I hope you can make sense of this I don't get most of it. Thanks Konsole [root@localhost guest]# dmesg Linux version 2.6.24.4-desktop586-1mnb (lcapitulino@n5.mandriva.com) (gcc version 4.2.3 (4.2.3-6mnb1)) #1 SMP Thu Mar 27 14:20:33 CET 2008 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009e000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009e000 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000dc000 - 00000000000e0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000e4000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000007f690000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000007f690000 - 000000007f700000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 000000007f700000 - 0000000080000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000e0000000 - 00000000f0000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec10000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fed00000 - 00000000fed00400 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fed14000 - 00000000fed1a000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fed1c000 - 00000000fed90000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fee00000 - 00000000fee01000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000ff000000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) Warning only 896MB will be used. 6. Ok I ran the first dmesg command and from what I can see there doesn't seem to be a fat32 that's valid, why would it be fat32 anyhow my windows partitions were NTFS? Thanks
  7. Actually I was using the first command he gave me earlier on, Ok just tried that one and here's what I got, I don't understand it. Konsole output [root@localhost guest]# mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/part1 mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error (aren't you trying to mount an extended partition, instead of some logical partition inside?) In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so [root@localhost guest]# syslog bash: syslog: command not found Thanks
  8. Ok got this far with the command and got permission denied in root, what's up with that. I have to say that when I had Mandriva 2007 working in GRUB I never had to turn apci off, so Im not so sure it's the mother board. Any chance you or someone else might want to help me through Instant Messaging? Might be easier for me to solve this. Thanks Konsole Output [root@localhost guest]# /dev/sda /mnt/part1 bash: /dev/sda: Permission denied
  9. Ok now I have the 2008.1 LiveCD working all I had to do was do the apci=off to get it to work, why does it have to be off? Anyhow, I ran the sudo command in Konsole but it doesn't work, so I"m guessing it's different with Mandriva, I will search for how to do it, but if you can post instructions I would greatly appreciate it. I opted for 2008 because 2009 is massive and I don't have the means to burn a DVD, so far I like what I see in 2008. Thanks
  10. Ok well I tried what was suggested and what you suggested but it still says I must specify filesystem, take a look Terminal output ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo # fdisk /dev/sda usage: sudo -K | -L | -V | -h | -k | -l | -v usage: sudo [-HPSb] [-p prompt] [-u username|#uid] { -e file [...] | -i | -s | <command> } ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo ls /mnt/part1 ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo ls /mnt/part2 lost+found ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda /mnt/part1 mount: you must specify the filesystem type ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ Thanks
  11. Ok the mount returned these folders, as you can see some are expanded others are not the ones that are not contain nothing, I don't see anything remotely close to the contents of my data. I had problems with some of the commands here is the output. Terminal output ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls /mnt/part1 ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls /mnt/part2 lost+found ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls /mnt/part3 AUTORUN D2DSING.TAG IMAGES P3.DAT PATCH Pre1.tag $RECYCLE.BIN SECTORS WINRE ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls /mnt/part4 ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ root@esprit ~]# fdisk /dev/sda bash: root@esprit: command not found ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ [root@esprit ~]# fdisk /dev/sda bash: [root@esprit: command not found ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ m bash: m: command not found ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ As you can see I could not run the root command, I'm not sure where to run those other two commands m and x? What do you think about the suggestion of my trying to restore the old GRUB setup, anything chance of that? Thanks
  12. I don't think there is a maybe about it. I'm sure it had to be my messing with supergrub and Qparted, I wish I had waited till I could get a boot disk, but I still have to deal with the disk being corrupt and until I am absolutely sure it's good, I can't take a chance on loading it up. As for Mandriva, you are saying that 2008 LiveCD should bootup just like this liveCD of Ubuntu did? I would really love it if I could go back to the way my grub was with Mandriva and Xp but I have my serious doubt about whether that is even possible the way things got screwed up. But I'm willing to try anything at this point since I"m going 7 days like this, I'm just grateful I can use a LIveCD to be able to surf and stuff and of course I would guess that the less I use the drive and more the CD the less the drive gets accessed and corrupted further? Thanks
  13. Any idea how I do that? What about the drive being corrupt?
  14. Ok that worked, here are the results, Thanks ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 2 2157 17318070 f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda2 2158 2159 10369+ 1 FAT12 /dev/sda3 * 5343 9666 34732530 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/sda4 1 1 8001 83 Linux /dev/sda5 2 2 8001 6 FAT16 /dev/sda6 3 2157 17310006 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order ubuntu@ubuntu:~$
  15. Ok well this is what I get in computer as you can see no partitions and the acerdata folder as I recall was the setup files for the laptop I think, I checked the filesystem folder but nothing there looked familiar and this is what happens when I do fdisk -l of course not in root since I have set no root yet. ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ fdisk -l ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ as you can see it just goes back to prompt without listing anything, is that bad? Thanks
