  1. Thanks to this person, its actually now fixed. The splash doesnt come up but ill be damned if i try to sort that out, because my laptop stopped booting for a while :/ Thanks a bundle, everyone that helped. Gold stars all round the house :D
  2. No deuce: acpi=off prevented my system from booting at all, had to reboot and edit it at the menu. As for noapic nolapic, it didnt change anything
  3. 8. First, sudo cat /etc/hosts gives # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 hosts ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts Secondly, in var/log/messages there are two instances where ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKA] (IRQs 10 11) *0, disabled Pops up 9 times, when LNKA changes to LNKB, LNKC, LNKD, LNKE, LNKF, LNKG, LNKH and LNKU. Thirdly, the only things connected to my laptp when its turned on are the power cable and the mouse (the touchpad stopped working)
  9. No joke, it took ubuntu 10 minutes to boot up. There is no boot screen, it just goes blank while it loads up. However, once it did it worked perfectly. What are the problem?
  10. I've decided that it might be a better idea to do things the other way round: install windows and then fix the partition. Currently windows is installing on my PC so ill get back soon as. Updatez: It worked! Heres me after 48 hours without sleep: Now i have a laptop that does everything i'd ever want it to. ^.^
  11. I feel like i'm somewhat getting the short end of the stick as far as problem-free mandriva computing goes these days, but anyway: Trying to dual boot XP and Linux, i re-installed mandriva 2008 from a dvd and saved half of my 110GB hard drive for windows. After formatting each partition for its particular use i installed mandriva and then proceeded to install XP into the partition using its installer menu. The partition is recognised but when i tell it to install there it says that partition cant be used because it's not in the windows format. I thought the windows format was either FAT32 or NTFS, but neither of these works at all. I'm going to try some more but if anyone knows what's really going on it'd be great if you could show me what to do. Perhaps then i'll have no need to plague the forums with endless questions to obscure problems that shouldnt even be there
  12. Two points: firstly i agree with SoulSe ($400 or so worth of laptop will be either sold or thieved), but i also dont understand how, if there's no electricity, for these kids to power them in the first place?
  13. The way to do this, i found, is you have to go to the mandriva control center, click on manage software, expand the Development menu, click on kernel, scroll down till you find kernel-source-(something).mdv and install it. I had the same problem but thats what i did and everything works. Failing that, though, www.rpmseek.com will let you search for a madwifi RPM, which is a heck of alot easier :]
  14. Nope, it doesnt seem to be there.
  15. This FAQ is for ubuntu, does that matter?
  16. How do you do it? When you extract screenlet packages, it says to extract the program.py file to the screenlets folder but i can't do that! Help anyone?
  17. You mean like the *really working* 64-bit flash player?
  18. So nothing that relies on 3D support will work on my laptop?
  19. That said, 3D acceleration doesn't seem to work at all on my laptop. VMware, here i come..
  20. I have a laptop, does this mean the embedded VGA is all i have?
  21. Ok, where do i find that? I've looked everywhere for it and no-one has it. The urpmi isn't an option because there's no access to the internet for my laptop. (edit): I managed to find the fglrx driver, installed it and tried the cedega system tests again. It failed the openGL rendering and the 3D acceleration. Grr...
  22. So basically unless you're running a 64-bit killing machine, theres no advantage over using 64-bit Os'es on it?
