  1. I've installed mandriva 2007 on several machines in our office, and am trying to get printing setup with our networked Brother HL1870n b/w laser printer. I went to brother's website and downloaded and installed their linux drivers (rpm -ivh --no-deps brhl18_2-1.0.0-0-noarch.rpm), then went to localhost:631 and installed the printer, and succesfully printed a test page. Unfortunantly I seem to be unable to print fromn any other applications, on any of the machines. If. for example, I try to print a document from within kedit (File >> Print..), the print window opens, then another dialoge opens that states "Initializing printiong system..." then an error window appears that states "An error occured while retrieveing the printer list: Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: the ipp request failed for an unknown reason." I get the same error dialoges no mater what application I try to print from. I am able to ping the printer by IP address, from the linux boxes. I searched the forums here and came across the following thread: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...39&hl=print rpm -qa | grep cups returns: libgnomecups-1.0_1-0.2.2-3mdv2007.0 libcups2-1.2.4-1.1mdv2007.0 cups-common-1.2.4-1.1mdv2007.0 libgnomecups-0.2.2-3mdv2007.0 cups-1.2.4-1.1mdv2007.0 chkconfig --list cups returns: cups 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off service cups status returns: cupsd is stopped and netstat -tan returns no mention of anything on 631. If I go to MCC >> System >> Services, cups is listed as stopped, with "on boot" unchecked. I can start cups from there, or with: service cups start chkconfig --list cups then returns: cups 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off and netstat -tan returns: tcp 0 0 :::631 :::* LISTEN But, I am still getting the same errors and lack of printing when I try to print. Also when I reboot, CUPSD is no longer running. I've uninstalled and reinstalled both cups and the brother drivers, but the problem persists on all machines. Any ideas? Thanks
  2. I installed thac's nVidia_GLX-7667-2 last week, and it brought dkms-nvidia along with it. This dropped my glxgears scores by almost a third, so I decided to revert back to the nVidia supplied driver. I used MCC/rpmdrake to remove them both, and it seemed to work fine.
  3. Not the quietest vid card, but fast enough. :P
  4. Indeed!!! I was in the middle of updating my home file server to 10 last week, when all the mirrors seemed to implode.

  6. OK, NFS is moderately nifty. ;) Followed your directions, and was able to mount and umount exports between my linux boxes (haven't messed with any fstab modifications, yet). Not difficult at all, and the file transfers are definantly faster. Still trying to get the NFS exports to mount on the Macs. I keep getting... Argos:/Users/me root# mount 192.168.1.141:/export/expdir /Users/me/mnt mount_nfs: /Users/me/mnt: Operation not permitted ...from terminal on the Mac, and when I enter nfs://192.168.1.141/export/expdir in the Go >> Conect to Server... dialog box in the GUI, it says it can't connect because the name or password is incorrect. After googling and RTFMing, it seems like it might be a UID issue. My user name and password are the same across the network, but my UIDs differ...I've got the same UID on the linux boxes, but not on the Macs. Saw references to "UID/GID mapping", but couldn't find actual instructions. Ideas? :D
  7. This is an issue that I have personal experience with. One of my housemates has a flat panel iMac, running 10.3.2, that he uses for software developement and digital video editing. I have a mandrake 9.2 box serving smb shares that he stores his gigabytes of video on. The key word here is "stores", because you really can't edit video over a network, it has to be local. So, whether you're using smb or nfs, your still only using it to copy the files to your local hard drive to edit, and then copying back to the server for storage. Also, for a the linux newbie there are numerous GUI options in Mandy for configuring samba, but I found few for nfs (I stayed up for a while last night trying to setup some exports on one of the linux boxes, but wasn't able to get OSX to see anything. I'll still try more, because it does sound interesting :) ). I'm not saying that there might not be some bumps initially getting it set up, But there is a great deal more support on the Mac for using samba for cross-platform file transfer than anything else. And, if you're wanting to also share this data with WinBlows clients, then smb is really the way to go.
  8. You don't need to enable the root acount to use ifconfig in OSX. If you want to change settings with ifconfig, ie... ifconfig en0 down, then you would preface it with sudo . it will then ask for your admin password. If you just want to find out what the current settings are, then you can use ifconfig without sudo.
  9. Do you have OSX assigned to the same workgroup as the Linux box? My SMB browsing at home didn't work well at all until I went to Directory Access (in the OSX Utilities Folder) and assigned the correct workgroup and WINS server. Especially in 10.3, samba browsing seems to be MUCH improved.
  10. Last I checked, resizing HFS/HFS+ volumes was a no-go. Reading and writing to HFS seemed to work allright, but access to HFS+ was still experimental (reading seemed to work alright, but no write). When I installed MDK 9.1 ppc on my PBG4 las year it involved erasing and reformatting the drive, leaving unformatted/empty space for the linux install, re-installing OSX, and then installing Mandy in the vacant space. If you have a spare FireWire HD, you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to back-up and then re-install OSX.
  11. I have a WET-11 at home, and if I remember right from when I set it up last year I had to plug it in to the router with an ethernet cable first - so that it could get an IP# from the DHCP server - then disconnect it from the router and connect the remote computer to the WET-11. It worked automagically after that.
  12. I actually have 2 optiplex GX1s with mandy 9.1 running on them. The Mandrake installer and XFdrake detected the cards as "3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X". From my XF86Config.... Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "ATI" BoardName "ATI Mach64 Utah" Driver "ati" Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" DefaultColorDepth 24 Subsection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubsection EndSection v
  13. I changed my /etc/sysconfig/usb from: # -*- Mode: sh -*- # Set this to no if you don't want USB. USB=yes # This will force to load the usb system and keyboard at the early # process of the boot proces KEYBOARD_AT_BOOT=no # Some driver you may want to force the load, normally all of this is # done by the hotplug package. MOUSE=no KEYBOARD=no STORAGE=no VISOR=no PRINTER=no to this: # -*- Mode: sh -*- # Set this to no if you don't want USB. USB=yes # This will force to load the usb system and keyboard at the early # process of the boot proces KEYBOARD_AT_BOOT=yes # Some driver you may want to force the load, normally all of this is # done by the hotplug package. MOUSE=yes KEYBOARD=yes STORAGE=yes VISOR=no PRINTER=no Now my Logitech cordless mouseman optical works consistantly, my usb keyboard works at boot time, and my usb MMC card reader is recognized right away. Hooray!! No more PS2 connectors!!!!
