  1. Hi again, I have restarted this thread and anyone dropping by - please bear in mind that the posts below are from my original thread!! The last entry being mine: Well, as you might have already guessed - I am a stubborn old git who can not quit even when I run out of ideas!! I have been working with you guys and the guys at mandriva.club forum as well as Linux questions to try and solve this problem!! Everything points to a bug but one doesn't want to report a bug until one is absolutely sure about the facts! The latest kernel update didn't change the situation either! The thing that is strange about the situation is when I log out I hear some sort of sound like something being turned of or on?!! The sort of sound you can get when turning a radio on or off - if that makes sense? I did not experience this before with2007.1. I suspect that it is inerrant to my present problems? I would appreciate some feedback if only to go through things one more time!! bookie ;)
  2. Thanks as always for your time Adam. Can't win all of them all of the time! bookie
  3. I have had a chat with my mate and he says that Ati haven't a later driver than 8.28.8. He could get the card working with Mandriva 2008 but not the TV side of things? Have you any suggestions on that? bookie
  4. Thanks for the info guys. I will have a word with my mate and try and give you clearer info. I feel like a piggy in the middle at the moment. bookie
  5. Hi adamw, my friend said that the card was detected with the following as stated 8.28.8. He says that it doesn't work very well that is why he thought he would give Radeon a try. bookie PS If you have any more suggestions, I am all ears. Thanks Adam!
  6. Thanks for the advice Reiver_Fluffi. My friend said he had tried the driver you mentioned from ati but hasn't checked out radeon yet! Thanks again. bookie
  7. Hi again, got a friend here in Sweden that has just gone over to powerpack 2008 but is having problems with his graphics card. Does anyone have any suggestions to drivers for Ati's Radeon 9250? bookie
  8. Hi again, as you know I have been working with mindwave on creating a MCNLivecd. I was trying to use my own powerpack version which hasn't worked out how I would have liked. I appreciate that the idea of MCNLivecd was the standard spring version. What I don't understand is why I can't make a livecd from the powerpack version. It is after all based on the same product and the same kernel? I have created many livecd versions - nearly all of which, I have been able to boot and work from BUT not install. I use the right draklive-install version. I run /usr/sbin/draklive-install. I get the install gui, I create a partition and formate it, but it is as far as I can get. The installer hangs after "computing total size". The install has Aray written at the top with some numbers and that is where it stays. I haven't a clue what it can be that is causing the problem? I found MCNLivecd a usful tool if you do something stupid and cause kernel panic. One has to only boot from Toronto and move the files that one would have possibly lost otherwise. I don't see any other use for MCNLivecd at the moment. Not trying to put chris:b down. I think she has done a brilliant job. I am just a little down because I can't utilize it for powerpack. bookie
  9. Well, you hit the nail on the head - so to speak. My girlfriend has a sick sense of humor. She is always sticking things on my head to have a laugh. Got kind of used to it now - doesn't phase me any more. It seems to go down well at parties. Not sure if they are laughing with me or at me? bookie
  10. Thanks for that AussieJohn. Arctic was also a little worried with mistaken identity. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Glad we got that sorted out. What dot you reckon to the mug shot? He's a lovely feller what? bookie
  11. Well,, I am glad to know that you are who you are - if you know what I mean. It would seem that everyone picked up on me being a little tetchy the other day. I suppose more because people like yourself have been around for a while and are known for their temperament instead of a newcomer like me. I hope I don't ruffle too many feathers in the future. I am a NICE guy REALLY!! bookie
  12. Hi AussieJohn, I am at a bit of a loss to know what you are talking about. Arctic has not posted any comments to this thread? Unless you are confusing chris:b and Arctic? Or maybe it is a case of their one and the same person? If you had taken the time to read my other threads; you would have seen my apologizing to Greg2 and chris:b for losing my cool. If you had taken the time to read further, you would have seen that I live daily with a great deal of pain - which is no excuse for losing my cool with you guys and girls, but It does leave me kind of drained at times. As for a sense of humor, I think it is hard to judge someone from a few comments written on a forum! I don't know everything there is to know about Linux - but, then again I don't make assumptions about people I don't know. I have one of the most easy going natures a person could have - plus I am big enough and ugly enough to apologize when I am out of order. There is a definite shortage of people that can admit when their in the wrong - I am not one of them! So please don't let us get off to bad start just because I was a little hasty in taking offense. When people I don't know behave in a manner I think is condescending - then I will more than likely make a comment. If I am not anything else, I am honest and sincere! But I appreciate you taking the time to put me right? bookie
  13. Hi the Yin Yeti, well I am impressed. I didn't expect such frank statements. The one good thing about posting such a thread is maybe people like your selves will remember the reasons why they came to Linux. I don't think I have ever met the camaraderie that exists on these forums anywhere else. Linux has become much more than just an alternative to WINDOWS! Like I have said before - WINDOWS users do not know what they are missing. Thanks for taking the time to add your views, thoughts etc. bookie
  14. I made the supreme mistake yesterday and let my impatience, frustration, you name it - get in the way of the Linux experience. Anyone reading the posts from yesterday will see that I wasn't too appreciative of chris:b and Greg. I have apologized for that, so I don't want people thinking that I am an --------. I put, like a lot of others, a lot of my life into Linux. I discovered Linux because of a very good friend here in Sweden who wanted to offer me an alternative to windows. We like so many others get classified as computer nerds. I think that is kind of a complement. The other reason for having the need for something like Linux is the ever increasing time I spend at home. I followed a young Swedish girl back to Sweden when I was 37 and she 20. I know what you are thinking "cradle snatcher" yep I agree, but after nearly fourteen years together I think it works very well. Sweden isn't the promised land and they really have a problem with outsiders. I know you are probably under the impression that everything is sweetness and light with the Swedes. Sorry to spoil your illusion that is far from the truth - but not why I am writing this post. I have reeducated myself several times over, have spoken the language fluently after as little as one year, tried every avenue to get work. I have had good jobs where everything starts OK ,but the Swedish prejudice gets in the way of everything. I don't want to generalize - but it is quite hard to accept at times. "Why is he still living here" you are asking. Well, if it wasn't for my long term girlfriend, I would have moved years ago. A few months ago I had a practical position at a well known welding company here in Sundsvall. The practical position was organized by the job center and while you are practicing you are insured by the job center. Well, after a week it was quite obvious that the company were using me as cheap labor - quite common these days and not confined to Sweden. I hurt myself quite badly because of the lack of interest in giving me assistance when I needed it. I didn't break an arm, leg or anything like that - I badly strained my back which has been giving me serious problems ever since. My days are good, bad, can't get out of bed, can function as a normal person, but not get a job!! I have tried every avenue to get the job center, social services, my doctor to get their act together and help me - but nada. This is also a typical attitude here in Sweden and not confined just to immigrants, refugees etc. I am continuing to fight the system - but am being stonewalled at every turn!!! It is for this reason I am so grateful for the Linux experience. My girlfriend - who BTW will not marry me - because I am damaged goods Ha, Ha, has stuck by me through everything. She is also very sad knowing the way I have been treated and the fact that it is more common than she would first admit. This is by no way a sob story more a case of me being open as a person and wanting to share with you my reasons for coming to Linux. I am sure there are similar stories out there. Thanks for listening why I dribbled on about myself. bookie
  15. Hi chris:b, yes I appreciate what you are saying. Just been talking to mindwave about that very same thing. I am going to reduce the size of my image by getting rid of unwanted language packages and such like. Talking to mindwave about getting rid of rose garden. Haven't had time to see what rose garden is about though. Regarding ram. Hadn't really considered that. I have 1024mb of ram at the mo. I have been thinking about upgrading to 2GB - perhaps this is the right time to think about that. I was looking along the lines of a dvd instead of a cd. bookie
  16. Well, I have been working quite a lot with mindwave. He has changed things a little. I unmounted all the drives apart from / and ran mklivecd --verbose 082607.iso. It ran to 46 % and then stopped. I have tried rechecking the files from MCNLivecd, then cleaned up old mklivecd files and did a new run. But for some reason it hangs at the exact same place. The following is a out put of that run with a df reading of my hard drive - showing that I hadonly the one mounted and that there was plenty of space. The 3.7 is just after the run. It was 2.9GB before. I am at a loss to understand what could have gone wrong. Mindwave was wondering about the files from MCNLive Toronto, size of the file, and how many partitions I had mounted. All of which , seem OK? I am open to suggestions. bookie
  17. Well, as you will here from your personal message - I am very sorry for losing my cool. I understood what you were saying, but couldn't see the relevance at the time. The following is an updated fstab just to show I can admit when I am wrong and learn from it. So I guess this an apology to you and chris:b for being a pain in the ----! I am not going to use my next few words as an excuse more of I am becoming more aware that my back problems are affecting my usually calm personality. Once again sorry guys and girls. bookie
  18. Well, Greg2 this whole exercise is becoming very, very tedious. Do I understand? I think it is more a question of not many people have a grasp of the English language on this forum!! I DO NOT WANT TO CREATE A LIVE CD OF /me1 or /annamar I just want to store my images on one of those partitions - which were - I would like to point out - created when I installed Mandriva Powerpack+ Perhaps you'd like to tell me that sdb1 / isn't a mount point as it doesn't have /mnt/ before it?!! Why don't you just say that Mandriva don't know how to mount partitions at all? Sdb1 is my root partition as you all well know and it is that one that Mandriva is installed on. AND it is that one I would like to create a live cd of. Have I made myself understood?!! I have the patience of a Saint, always grateful for any advice I receive, but today I am beginning to wish I hadn't bothered.. I don't usually loose my patience. Well, a bit of news for you I am on the way to being ------ ---!! bookie (Without prejudice)
  19. We really don't seem to understand one another? I am sorry that I don't seem to speak your language? Please don't take offense that isn't what I mean. Ok I will start again. When I create my livecd it will not include any of my hard drives apart from sdb1 the other hard drives I intend to unmount before I execute the mklivecd command. The only thing I was trying to do was point my install to somewhere where I can find it? Maybe the iso automatically ends up in HOME. That is what I am asking you. If I included the other hard drives my live cd/dvd would be to big and run into problems that you explained. I only want a livecd of Mandriva not any thing else. I was merely trying to ask you if I could say where my iso image can end up after creation? If you have some suggestions, I am all ears. It could be that I am not grasping what your saying, or maybe it is vise versa? What about me just unmounting all the other hard drives apart from sdb1 and creating the iso in home. Forgive me if I seem dense, but I was under the impression that when you run: mklivecd --verbose mydate.iso that it is of the main partition sdb1 if the others are unmounted? bookie
  20. Thanks scarecrow, Well, you live and learn. I have been hearing about midnight commander, so I will give it a try. Sorry if I gave the impression that I work as root. I try to use root for the necessities. Thanks for your input. bookie
  21. OK now I am outta here as you put it!!! So as to not cause confusion, I have added my fstab read out. [root@ROCKY bookie]# cat /etc/fstab /dev/sdb1 / ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/sdb6 /annamar ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/sdb7 /me1 ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/sda6 /mnt/win_e ntfs umask=0,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0 What is wrong with my /me1?
  22. Ok! I think we better start again. The whole point of forums is for we that don't know can learn from you that do. This is one of the reasons I wrote the post To The Linux Masters. Read it, please!! One of the things we agree to when joining forums is not to be offensive to people? I don't know you from Adam, but I try to give you the respect you deserve because I realize that you are very competent with Linux. In saying that, I expect the same respect in return and not the offensive comments like in your last post. Do not try to patronize people it doesn't go to making a friendly atmosphere. i put a question mark after file manager for one reason - I couldn't see the relevance to the question. That was my mistake and I apologize. I of course use konqueror as my file manage - if that puts your mind at rest. bookie
  23. Thanks arctic for the reasuring comments. It was a pleasure to read them. bookie
  24. The other thing I find strange is when I look for the /usr/lib/syslinux/flash.jpg on Torronto I can't find it? bookie
  25. Hi again, well, I mean to say that I have transferred all the necessary files from MCNLive Toronto to my hard drive. I created a partition to save my iso's on, so that if the computer crashes I still have them. The partition is sdb7 and I gave it the mount name of /me1. My mum calls me her number 1 son, so I thought it appropriate to call myself /me1 The command for building the iso was #mklivecd --verbose mydate.iso: I put in the date of creating the iso for ease of reference. This was something mindwave gave me a tip about. The thing I forgot to do was point the iso image to a certain folder. bookie
