  1. Mandriva 2008 KDE Can the look of the login screen be configured? Specifically I would like all the user accounts be listed and selectable. Maybe even with icons ala Windows. I'm not interested in the Windows switch user capability. Just simply list the user accounts instead of the blank entry for username. Thanks,
  2. I also tried unmask=0 That didn't work either. I reverted back to a regular read-only NTFS install
  3. I followed the release note instructions. Got no errors and restarted. But it doesn't seem to mount as I cannot see it from konqueror, even after I go into the Mandriva Control Center and mount it. Here is the relevent line from my fstab: /dev/hda1 /media/hd ntfs-3g umask=0022,nls=utf8,sync 0 0
  4. Thanks for all the help. With these various tips I was able to set things straight.
  5. I had Mandriva 2008 installed and running fine for about a day. Suddenly my KDE panel disappeared. I had it placed at the bottom of my desktop and set to go into hide mode. Now whenever I start a session I get a quick flash of the panel but placing my cursor at the bottom does not bring the panel back. What should I do ? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  6. I was not sure if I was to hit esc at the screen where I have the option of selecting the OS to boot or at the screen after I had selected Mandriva 2008. I did the first and hit OK at message window saying I am entering text only mode. Then hit esc but nothing happened so I selected Mandriva to boot. This time it booted with no problem. I was able to finish the install (config wireless, root password, user account etc). When do I did a restart and tried the graphical boot loader again. It boots with no problem. It seems that I am alright now! :thanks:
  7. I started Mandriva 2008 in LiveCD mode. No problems. Started Live Install I got to the part where it says to restart machine and remove the Live CD. I did this. I got the boot loader screen showing Mandriva 2008 and Windows XP (default per my selection and on a different hard drive) I selected Mandriva 2008 and got to the screen with the progress bar. The boot freezes. I hit escape for the verbose mode and this is what I get: setting default font [ok] configuring kernel parameters [ok] setting clock (local time) [ok] starting udev: wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED] What should I do now? My WinXP will boot but I suppose I can only get into linux via Live CD.
  8. Windows boots fine. The Madriva boot freezes. I hit escape for the verbose mode and this is what I get: setting default font [ok] configuring kernel parameters [ok] setting clock (local time) [ok] starting udev: wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED]
  9. Here is what I've done. I started Mandriva 2008 in LiveCD mode Started Live Install I resized the hd6 partition to shrink it by 12 GB From the new free 12GB space I created a new partition for Mandriva 2008 It looks like it got called hd7 The bootloader install did not seem to recognize Mandriva 2007.1 I got to the part where it says to restart machine and remove the Live CD. I did this. I got the boot loader screen showing Mandriva 2008 and Windows XP (default) I selected Mandriva 2008 and got to the screen with the progress bar. The boot freezes. I hit escape for the verbose mode and this is what I get: setting default font [ok] configuring kernel parameters [ok] setting clock (local time) [ok] starting udev: wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED] What should I do now? I suppose my WinXP will boot but I suppose I can only get into linux via Live CD. Any help is greatly appreciated!
  10. Hello, I have a 2 hard disk system with WinXP on hda and Mandriva 2007.1 KDE on hdb. I had some problems upgrading to 2008 and I want to take a new approach. I would like to add Mandriva 2008 on hdb so that I can boot either 2007.1 and 2008. I would also like to have a partition for keeping files that can be mounted/accessed by either 2007.1 and 2008 If I go into the Mandriva Control Center I get this info on the hdb partitions: Mount point / Device: hdb1 Type: Journalised FS: ext3 Size: 7.8GB (2%) mounted Mount point swap Device: hdb5 Type: Linux swap Size: 3.6GB (1%) Mounted Device: hdb6 Type: Journalized FS: ext3 Size: 267GB (95%) Note that hdb6 is not mounted. This is noticeable from Konqueror too. If in Konqueror I go to System -> Storage Media then I see 160G Media and 8.4G Media where the 1st is WinXP hda and the 2nd is hdb. I wonder why the generic install of Mandriva didn't mount hdb6. Anyways, I would appreciate any recommendations on how to proceed.
  11. "a fatal error ocurred: urpmi database locked" I get this when I open Rpmdrake. No other apps are running. How do I fix this? Thanks, Jose BTW, running 2007.1 KDE
  12. Originally, I did change the repositories from 2007.1 to 2008.0 and used the package manager to udpate. There were about 1300+ packages to install. I was also wirelessly connected to my router (probably not a smart thing in hindsight). It got to about all but 30 packages when the wireless stopped working. So I shutdown the computer and moved it to a room with an ethernet plug. When I started the PC I got a Mandriva 2008 boot screen but when I selected Mandriva 2008 KDE did not start. All I got was a terminal window. So I logged in. su'd to root and did the urpmi --auto-select thing. It started to work but crashed. Curious, I restarted. KDE does start but not working properly. I do not get the frames that let me minimize/maximize/drag the open windows. Here is my package manager errors: 5 installation transactions failed There was a problem during the installation: file /usr/bin/cspctl from install of cspctl-1.0.14-2mdv2008.0.i586 conflicts with file from package sb16_csp-1.0.14-0.rc3.1mdv2007.1.i586 file /usr/bin/cspctl from install of sb16_csp-1.0.14-2mdv2008.0.i586 conflicts with file from package cspctl-1.0.14-0.rc3.1mdv2007.1.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkrossui4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkparts4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkde3support4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkutils4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkunittest4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkntlm4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by kdelibs4-core-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libktexteditor4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkjsembed4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by kdegraphics4-core-3.93.0-0.714385.1mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkdeui5-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkwalletbackend4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkdeprint_management4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkdeprint5-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkrosscore4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkfile4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkhtml5-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkaudiodevicelist4-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 libkdecore.so.5 is needed by libkio5-3.93.0-0.714006.2mdv2008.0.i586 file /usr/lib/mindi/rootfs/bin/busybox from install of mindi-busybox-1.2.2-2mdv2008.0.i586 conflicts with file from package mindi-1.09-1mdv2007.0.i586 mindi-busybox is needed by mindi-1.24-1mdv2008.0.i586 Any ideas? 13. Hi, I am in this situation. How exactly do you chroot into the hard disk partition from the Live CD? Thanks, Jose
  14. I had the capture card and MythTV working together at one time. But the cx88-dvb module was not loading automatically. If I loaded it with modprobe from a terminal window and then when into MythTV setup I could find my capture card using type DVB DTV Capture Card. And I could watch/record OTA digital TV. Then I was told that if I added cx88-dvb to the /etc/module.preload file I would not have to load that module each time. I did so and sure enough lsmod showed the module to be there. However, this is when I started to get the "Device Busy" messages from MythTV, including from inside MythTV-setup when I tried to select the DVB DTV Capture Card type. So I figured maybe the preload was the problem. I removed cx88-dvb from the /etc/module.preload file. And lsmod showed that the module did not load. If I load it with modprobe then I can start the backend with no problem: [root@localhost jose]# modprobe cx88-dvb [root@localhost jose]# mythbackend -d 2007-10-02 03:32:41.246 Using runtime prefix = /usr 2007-10-02 03:32:41.267 New DB connection, total: 1 [root@localhost jose]# 2007-10-02 03:32:41.282 Connected to database 'mc' at host: localhost 2007-10-02 03:32:41.287 Current Schema Version: 1160 Starting up as the master server. 2007-10-02 03:32:41.298 New DB connection, total: 2 2007-10-02 03:32:41.299 Connected to database 'mc' at host: localhost 2007-10-02 03:32:41.303 EITHelper: localtime offset -4:00:00 2007-10-02 03:32:41.310 New DB connection, total: 3 2007-10-02 03:32:41.317 Connected to database 'mc' at host: localhost 2007-10-02 03:32:41.349 New DB scheduler connection 2007-10-02 03:32:41.350 Connected to database 'mc' at host: localhost 2007-10-02 03:32:41.353 Main::Starting HttpServer 2007-10-02 03:32:41.362 Main::Registering HttpStatus Extension 2007-10-02 03:32:41.370 mythbackend version: 0.20.20060828-4 URL:www.mythtv.org 2007-10-02 03:32:41.371 Enabled verbose msgs: important general 2007-10-02 03:32:41.371 AutoExpire: Found 1 recorders w/max rate of 138 MiB/min 2007-10-02 03:32:41.373 AutoExpire: Required Free Space: 3.0 GB w/freq: 10 min 2007-10-02 03:32:43.367 Reschedule requested for id -1. 2007-10-02 03:32:43.398 Scheduled 2 items in 0.0 = 0.01 match + 0.02 place 2007-10-02 03:32:43.401 Seem to be woken up by USER HOWEVER, now when I start the frontend I immediately get logged out of my session. 15. My BIOS lets me toggle IRQs between Available and Reserved. But for Reserved I found no way to tie it to a specific device.
  16. Yes is does. I see it with lsmod. I don't have any other available slots. Do you think removing it and reinstalling would help?
  17. Hello, I had been able to use a HD-3000 card with MythTV before. But now I am getting errors from MythTV stating that the device is busy and cannot connect. Can anyone help? Thank You, Jose
  18. How do I get a module to permanently load? Specifically I am using the "modprobe cx88-dvb" command to load the cx88-dvb module. But after any PC restart that module is not loaded and I have to run the modprobe command again. How do I get it to either permanently load or load automatically on start-up? Thank You, Jose [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  19. So ultimately it was really a MySQL question. I figured out that the recommended mysql commands from the MythTV user manual were essentially useless. I was able to create the needed database by using the MySQL tutorials from this site: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/database-use.html Now I will see if I can successfully finish the MythTV configuration.
  20. Hi All, One of the main reasons I am starting into Linux is to get my PC acting as a DVR. I dropped a PcHDTV HD-3000 card into my box and installed its firmware files. Upon boot I see that the new HD was detected. I can see it when I look at HW via the Mandriva Control Center and noticed that KdeTV dropped a shortcut on the desktop. So I think I am OK from a HW perspective. Since the KdeTV was on the desktop I thought why not give it a try. (my main goal was MythTV). KdeTV appears to see the TV card but when I open the channel wizard, I cannot get past the first window (the next button is greyed out). I think KdeTV is limited to analog TV though. Is this correct? If so I know this is the wrong program to use. PcHDTV says to use MythTV. I am trying to configure this via its wiki: http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/User_Manu...al_Installation I am at this part of the wiki: Setup mysql database mythconverg Set the root password for the mysql database. (replace mysqlpassword with your own) Open a Terminal window > mysqladmin -u root password mysqlpassword Setup the initial database The following command will prompt for password > mysql -u root -p < /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql Here is what I did: [root@localhost jose]# mysqladmin password mysqlpwd [root@localhost jose]# mysql -p < /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql bash: /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql: No such file or directory So I think the 1st command worked bu the 2nd did not. Any recommendations?
  21. A K3B Settings is there. And if you have integrated K3B with Konqueror you can get to it via the Settings pull down menu in Konqueror with an item listed as Configure K3B. In K3B Settings you can select Setup External Programs which includes a tab for setting the user parameters for the various programs such as cdrecord. I looked at the cdrecord man page and didn't find a general option for running as another users such as root. But as I said earlier I am no longer sweating thias as it seems I am able to record with no problems.
  22. Your terminal command worked. Mandriva Online says my system is up to date. After executing the terminal command I went back into the GUI and searched for a few things. It turns out my problem is newbie user error. I figured out that it doesn't like leading wildcards. I was giving both a leading and trailing wildcard around my search word. When I drop the leading wildcard all is fine. Thanks for all the help and my apologies for raising a non-issue in this forum.
  23. The actual error message is: cdrecord will be run without root privileges It is highly recommended to configure cdrecord to run with root privileges. Only then cdrecord runs with high priority which increases the overall stability of the burning process. Apart from that it allows changing the size of the used burning buffer. A lot of user problems could be solved this way. This is also true when using SuSE's resmgr. I ran it as root but since I previously did not run it as root I still see this message. However I am no longer concerned. I was able to burn a DVD with no problem. I will just select the check box that will repress this error message.
