  1. I new to linux, and have managed to stuff up totally my sound devices. I didn have sound to begin with, now I can even SEE the devices that give me sound, and have a lovely red cross on the volume icon. Tried installing all the Alsa bits I didn have, then uninstalling them, and reinstalling them again. i think Ie made things drastically worse. Please help if you can.
  2. Hi. Just realized I seem to be running an i686 system... looking at the headers when I swithc to a virtual terminal (Cntl F1), I told I have a dual processor i686 system. This makes since, as I running an intel pentium 4 processor, currently in 32 bit legacy mode. I thought I needed Mandriva Spring 2007.1 as a i586 system, which is what I downloaded, and what all of my added software is. How will this effect me, and do I need to somehow change? If so, how can I do this safely? THanks!
  3. Hi everyone, hoping I can get some help with this problem. Just tried to import a .CSV file from Microsoft Outlook into evolution; I created it on a Microsoft Windows desktop (also installed on this machine) and tried to import the file into evolution (windows partition is mounted properly, can read everything). Didn´t work that time, so I copied .CSV file onto my Gnome desktop. Still didn´t work, gave up. Now Evolution is REALLY slow to compose messages, haven done a thorough check, but everything else seems fine. What? going on here? Evolution says it? able to import .csv files...is it possible it? recognising .CSV files from windows (in capitals) as different? Unsure here, I think Microsoft isn´t case sensitive, but I know Linux coding is... anyway, importing aside, what can I do to get Evolution working properly again? Thanks everyone, your help is appreciated.
  4. Thanks for that! I did end up reinstalling, but mainly for different reasons. I was running x64, and I realized how difficult that would become for me as a newbie to linuk. SO now I running a 32 bit system, and haven had the same problem. Kernel upgrade went fine, and apart from minor bugs the system seems to be working fine. All the best!
  5. Apologies to having two threads, I new to this and didn understand the etiquette. If possible I like to keep this thread going. I´m not sure if I have a kernel source-stripped package installed or not. How do I tell? I downloaded and installed via the RPM graphical interface (through Mandriva Control Panel) what was suggested, the latest kernel. This came as a meta package and as the kernel source. I simply installed them, and when I rebooted have been having these problems. Tried uninstalling them, then reinstalling them again, and nothing is working. Is there more likely to be a bug with the kernel, or is this something to do with my system? Also, could this be something to do with running Spring One as a 64 bit version? Thanks for your help. ~Mitchell
  6. Not even slightly, unfortunately... have tried ´Boot Linux Spring´, ´kernel 2.6.17.14´ and kernel 2.6.16.13. The only one that would boot was the last one, and while I have a graphical user interface it took ages to come up, and seems to be just the minimum...i.e., no 3d, can move windows, etc. Any other ideas? I was thinking of just reinstaling this system, and avoiding the latest kernel. I´m also running a 64 bit version of Spring One. I definitely have a processor up to it, but could this be making my system unstable? Also, could the problem be with how Gnome reacts to this kernel? I don know enough about Linux yet to answer these... Thanks for your help.
  7. Have just installed the latest kernel upgrade, 2.6.17.14, and now my 3d desktop environment is disabled. When I log in almost everything looks the same, but I can no longer move windows, close them wihtout going into the file menu, or use anything else that was part of the 3d features. This is the third time this has happened, the first two I was unsure, but it? clear now that this happens only after installing this latest kernel. What can I do? Reallly don´t want to reinstall EVERYTHING again... have tried uninstalling this upgrade, but no luck... Also, have noticed that there? some bug with the keyboard, whenever I use certain characters, I find I have to press them twice before they come onto the screen. (qoutation marks, apostraphe´s, etc.) Is this related and does anyone know what´s going on here? I also keep getting two messages, ¨urpmi database locked´, and ¨Your window manager does not support the show Desktop Button, or you are not running a Windows manager.¨ I am running Mandriva 2007 Spring One. Prior to installing this kernel, everything has been working great, have really been enjoying using the 3d enviro. Thanks!

  9. Hi! I also new to Linux, and am planning to migrate from Windows. I have windows xp installed on a partitioned drive, and Mandriva One Spring 2007 on another part of the same drive. Firstly, I having lots of trouble backing up. I´ve run drakbackup, attempting to create a backup cd-rw or dvd, both with no success. Drakbackup just couldn´t get it onto the media. Did everything else, but not that. Also, when I open the Mandriva COntrol Centre and go into system, then to ?onfigure backups of the system and users data' I can´t run that program. My cursor simply hovers over it, and I can´t click on anything. I´ve changed it to the expert mode, and while there are more icons, the only change is I can´t click to open a concole either... any idea what? going on? Anyway, I want to backup my system configuration files, and my home directory. mainly. I´m still experimenting with Mandriva, and learning Linux, and am expecting to crash the system at some point. Thanks for your help! ~Mitchell
