  1. Can anyone help with this? I've just installed Mandriva 2009 Free on a new machine that has an nVidia 8400 GS video card. Mandriva installed the nvidia driver automatically through the MCC hardware screen. I've installed compiz and emerald. Unfortunately, MCC won't allow me to get the 3D effects working; it says that my system does not support 3D effects (I know it does). Any suggestions?
  2. Sounds bad. Yves, if you have a moment, could you explain what exactly is not a good sign? I'm still trying to learn more about how my machines and linux work.
  3. xrandr -q gives: $ xrandr -q Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 50.0* 800x600 51.0 52.0 53.0 680x384 54.0 55.0 640x480 56.0 576x432 57.0 512x384 58.0 400x300 59.0 60.0 61.0 320x240 62.0
  4. I have just installed Linux Mint 6 on one of my computers, but I cannot get the optimum resolution on my monitor. The monitor is an (older) NEC MultiSync LCD 2010X. It measures 20" and the optimum resolution is 1280x1024. Currently, is displays at 1024x728. I have an nvidia 6200 video card which Mint configured nicely. I have compiz working, and everything looks great -- except the resolution! Here is the content of xorg.conf: # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page. # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.) # # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg # package. # # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously # in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings # here are ignored. # # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated # again, run the following command: # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" EndSection Can anyone help?

I installed prism2-utils, which MCC shows as installed, but: [root@localhost george]# dmesg | grep -i prism [root@localhost george]# Something's not right. I can't seem to find prism2_usb in MCC, and 'urpmi install prism2_usb' says no such package (prism2-usb too). Is it in a special repository?

  8. I have an old HP Omnibook 510 laptop that has an Actiontec USB wifi adapter installed internally. I am running Mandriva Powerpack 2008.0, which seems to recognize the hardware. If I go to configure network, the card is displayed as "Actiontec Electronics, Inc. USB Wireless Adapter". When I first tried to configure it, Mandriva said it needed the prism2_'something' package, which I installed. Now, however, when I try to configure it, I get an error: "Unable to find network interface for selected device (using prism2_usb driver)." This is where I get stuck. Is there anything I can do now?
  9. I have an older computer (hp vt6200) with a fresh install of Mandriva 2008.1. I can't seem to play dvds. If I put one in the drive, it starts Totem, and I can hear sound, but there is no video. All I get is a green screen. What can I do?
  10. Thanks, Greg. I guess I'll just go ahead and reinstall. Fortunately, this is not such a big deal with Mandriva!

  12. I think I did something stupid. I am running Powerpack 2008.0 on this machine, but 2008.1 on others. In updating this one, I think that I installed updates for 2008.1 -- and now MCC doesn't work. Nothing even registers if I run it from a terminal; I just get a prompt. Is there any way to fix this without re-installing?
  13. Many thanks to the advice so far, but since I had nothing really invested in the Powerpack installation I downloaded and installed Mandriva Spring 2008.1. All drives seem to work now. So my problem is solved, but I do wonder about my Powerpack 2008.0 version. I have it running on several machines with no problems. Anyway, thanks again all.
  14. Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far. I apologize the late response -- vacation during August. I installed the latest version of openSUSE, and this read the drives without problems. I would prefer to get Mandriva working though. I am running Mandriva Powerpack 2008.0.
  15. I tried starting from the command line as you suggested, but the prompt "[root@localhost anko#]" disappeared then reappeared quickly. There was no other output that I could see. (I tried both as regular user then as root.)
  16. I think I messed up the Mandriva Control Center. When I start it, it asks for admin password but then it doesn't start. Nothing happens. What can I do to get it back?
  17. I have an HP Omnibook vt6200 with several drive modules: a cdrw drive, a single-layer dvd, and a double-layer dvdrw. I managed to install Mandriva Powerpack 2008 on it with the dvd drive in the slot, but since then I cannot get Mandriva to recognize either of my dvd drives. The laptop powers the dvd drives and spins discs, but they won't mount. The cdrw seems to work fine. Any suggestions?
  18. I have an old laptop, an HP Omnibook 6100, and I'm running 2008 Powerpack. Everything (pretty much) works great, but the age of the machine means that I don't have USB 2.0, and the sound card hisses and pops -- something it did running windows too. I would like to use a USB 2.0 cardbus adapter and perhaps a sound card too. Can I do this? Are there any particular cards that are known to work? Anything I should stay away from? Thanks for any advice.
  19. Well, that was simple! I did as you suggested (I'm too much of a novice to think of it yet), and saw the problem. I had to change the permissions on a couple of directories that Amarok was trying to access. I did have to reinstall again, but now all is fine. Many thanks daniewicz!
  20. I've just installed Mandriva Powerpack on my laptop. I installed Amarok, but the app fails to start. I get the splash screen, and my hd drive light flashes, but then nothing. If I click on the splash screen, it disappears but the hd light continues to flash randomly, and I can't shut down or reboot the machine. I have tried removing and reinstalling, but no go. (I run Amarok under Gnome.) Any thoughts?
  21. Yankee, The Tigerdirect link that you give won't connect, so I can't say anything about the card there. If you are looking for a PCMCIA card for a laptop, I can recommend the Orinoco Gold card (by Prism?). It has an Atheros chipset that has never given me problems connecting. I just make sure to have madwifi installed. I've used it in several different distros, Mandriva, Ubuntu. Suse, and it has always worked. From reading the forum, is seems that Atheros cards seem to work well generally.
  22. Success! I modified the fstab entry for the new hd, rebooted, and the drive was automatically mounted with both read and write capabilities. Thanks again Scarecrow.
  23. Thanks Scarecrow. I changed fstab and am now able to mount the drive through MCC. I can read from it, but I cannot write to it. I suspect that the drive's permissions are preventing me from writing. Unfortunately, I don't know how to change the permissions on a drive. Currently permissions are given as "dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 16384 2008-03-02 10:07 hd2/". How do I change this?
