  1. The implementation is very impressive. Good UI.
  2. Found answers to some of my questions here: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Policies/Softw...ackports_policy
  3. OK, then that brings another question. When Mandriva 2008.1 was released, FF was in version, say, 2.0.0.12. Today we're in 2.0.0.16. So what is the difference? And why aren't the repositories loaded with FF 3? And let's assume I'm updating to FF 3 from Backports and then update to MDV 2009.0, where FF 3 will probably be in Official, won't it mess up my system? Sorry for falling on you like that, it's just my curiosity to understand better how things work.
  4. Hi all, Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) is a (excellent, IMHO) open-source support vector graphics software. Version 0.45 is available in Main Official repositories, while version 0.46 is available in Main Backports repositories. In their official site, Inkscape publishes 0.46 as their latest stable version. Does anyone know why it is in Backports? Should I bring it up in the official Mandriva forums, or maybe send a bug report? [i'm not sure this is the right forums for this topic; if not, feel free to move it.] [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  5. Ah, solved. On the panel, right click, choose "Add to panel...", then choose "Notification Area". So simple... Thanks for your time, was a pleasure as usual.
  6. No, I get this message in the terminal: mdkapplet already running (7836) So I guess it's already running, I just can't see it. Where does it hide?
  7. Thanks. And how do I bring it back to the panel by default (so that it would run automatically each time I log in)?
  8. Hi everybody, I'm using Mandriva 2008.1 with Gnome. I decided to re-arrange the upper bar, especially its right side (where the clock is). Added workspace switcher, for example. Apparently in the process I must have deleted a few things, because now I don't get a notification when an update for a software is available (and I see in MCC that many updates are available for me). Does anyone know how to bring it back? Thanks!
  9. I'm not sure it helped. When I test my two cameras in Skype (one at a time, of course), I see the light turning on, but there is no picture on the screen. Weird. How else can I check if they are working?
  10. Mine says: Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0c45:612c Microdia And the second one: Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0c45:612c Pixart Imaging, Inc.
  11. I also have a similar problem. Both my ultra-cheap webcams (USB connection) don't work with my IBM X30 laptop, running MDV 2008.1. At least nothing happens when I plug them in.

    3 Major Issues

Issue 2: Another way to install programs on Mandriva is using the MCC - Mandriva control Center (if you are using Gnome, go to Applications -> Tools -> System Tools -> Configure your computer). Then in the SW management tab, configure media sources and then install program. The GUI is quite intuitive, if something is not understood, feel free to ask. And welcome aboard! :)
  14. It's a very impressive dock indeed, much more responsive than the AWN I'm running on my old laptop, even with the 3-D effects and everything. Only problem is that the GMenu button does not appear to work in my dock, and for me it's a must-have without I can't live (well, maybe I'm a bit exaggerating here...). Also, AWN has some nice extra buttons, like Show Desktop button. So for the meanwhile I think I'll stay with the AWN, but it's always nice to see new things.
  15. Worked for me too. -sigh- Of course, it is now important not to install the automatic update until this bug is fixed.
  16. Sorry for being thick, but I didn't understand from the bug report: Is there an immediate way for us to overcome this problem? I didn't quite understand what I should do with the solution suggested in comment #7.
  17. I have exactly the same problem. I also updated my system, with the same updates, before the desktop crashing. If anyone knows what to do - many thanks.
  18. I think it depends heavily on the nature of the population and location. I can tell you that in Israel, AFAIK, Mandriva doesn't have a better or worse name than any other distros(though sadly I must admit Linux in general is not very popular here). Personally I can tell you I was never ashamed in using Mandiva. Sure you can say I'm still a newbie that didn't have enough time to develop those negative feelings, but I don't see myself suffering from those inferiority fellings in the future either. I must tell you that I told about Mandriva to two of my collegues at work, and after about a month of using Vi$ta they tried Mandriva's live CD, and from there continued to full installation (my modest contribution to our efforts to control the world ).
  19. This one is tiny and this one is mini. A whole different name. :)
  20. I suggest downloading the Free version (in one DVD or three CD's) and upgrading from them. You should take into account that upgrading from 2006 to 2008.1 might be a bigger leap than recommended. Maybe it's better to upgrade through the intermediate versions. I would take the experts' advice.
