  1. Hi all, After unsuccessful upgrade from 2009.1 to 2010.0, I need to run the Free DVD and try to re-install. Since I don't have a DVD drive, I need to boot from a Mandrive boot CD and from there I'll try to install from the USB thumb drive. Does anyone know where I can find the Mandriva bootable iso? I've been searching on some Mandriva repositories and couldn't find any. Thanks!
  2. Up until now Google has only released beta version of Chromium for Linux, and for the meanwhile it is only supported by Debian and Ubuntu. Support for other distros is planned. http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel#TOC-Linux
  3. Actually I don't really mind formatting the disc. Maybe I'll even use this opportunity to take Fedora to a test drive before I install MDV 2010, as I've been wanting to do it for a long time. But the truth is that I enjoy trying to fix it (from the technical perspective. I learn many new things this way), so I think I'll give Ian's advice a shot. If worse comes to worst I can always do a fresh install. The important data is already backed up (I did it before the upgrade), but it's a useful advice always worths mentioning, so thanks. I'll try it tonight. The only problem I see is that AFAIK, Mandriva stopped releasing Free on CD's, and now Free is released only on DVD media. I don't have a DVD player on my laptop (it's quite old), so what I should do is copy the iso file to USB DOK, boot from the rescue CD, and point the installation to the DOK. Hope the rescue CD will load the DOK, if not I will try to copy the iso file to the hard drive.
  4. I now see that after a long time (about 15 minutes), I'm being thrown to console. So I have access to log files if needed.
  5. I installed and ran etc-update and chose replace the old files with the new ones. After booting and grub I get some quick messages (I think I read there something about not being able to open some files) and then I get a blank screen and a message: Could not log bootup: Address already in use And then the cursor hangs, nothing responds and I must do hard restart. So now I can't load the kernel and the degenerated window manager. Any more ideas? Has this officially become lost cause?
  6. There you go: [root@localhost log]# fgrep 'warning' syslog [root@localhost log]# fgrep 'WARNING' syslog Nov 15 21:52:07 localhost gnome-session[25960]: WARNING: Detected that screensaver has left the bus Nov 15 21:52:07 localhost gdm-binary[3532]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0 Nov 15 23:16:24 localhost gnome-session[5338]: WARNING: Detected that screensaver has left the bus Nov 15 23:16:25 localhost gdm-binary[26264]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0 Nov 15 23:16:54 localhost console-kit-daemon[574]: WARNING: no sender Nov 16 20:05:38 localhost gnome-session[3001]: WARNING: Detected that screensaver has left the bus Nov 16 20:05:38 localhost gdm-binary[811]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0 [root@localhost log]# fgrep 'Error' syslog Nov 15 23:16:25 localhost pulseaudio[5656]: main.c: Unable to contact D-Bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoServer: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-hi3bBiUfED: Connection refused Nov 16 20:03:54 localhost klogd: hsfengine: Unknown symbol cnxthsf_7800204full_OsErrorPrintf Nov 16 20:03:54 localhost klogd: hsfmc97ich: Unknown symbol cnxthsf_7800204full_OsErrorPrintf Nov 16 20:05:39 localhost pulseaudio[3426]: main.c: Unable to contact D-Bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoServer: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-LQoErIGdJl: Connection refused [root@localhost log]# fgrep 'ERROR' syslog [root@localhost log]# fgrep 'Oops' syslog [root@localhost log]# fgrep 'OOPS' syslog [root@localhost log]# fgrep 'Warning' syslog I suspect that warning about gdm_slave and Fatal Xerror has something to do with my problem (Am I bright or what?). How do I continue from here?
  7. No, I don't know at what logs I should be looking and where to find them. As I said, I can run wmii as window manager, so I don't have any problem accessing the files. I'll be glad to post them here if you tell me which of them can be helpful.
  8. Already tried it. Exact same problem occurred when I logged in with another user, and also with xguest.
  9. Hey everybody, I have upgraded from 2009.1 to 2010.0 yesterday, with no special problems (actually I found a problem back on RC1, and I even reported about it, but I do not believe it is the source to the difficulty I'm experiencing). After logging in, Gnome desktop loads fully, and then, after a few more seconds, even if I don't do anything, I'm being thrown back to the login screen. I've been able to run successfully alternative window manager (wmii), which made me think the problem was on Gnome. I uninstalled gnome-task and gnome-task-minimal and then re-installed them, but to no avail. Any ideas how do I start to check it? Thanks!
  10. Thanks. Maybe the two reports should be merged. Anyway, I hope it will be fixed, although I don't see any way of fixing it before 2010.1 comes out.
  11. I urge you to to comment on the bug report on bugzilla. This may help persuading Mandriva/Intel that this problem influences many users, and help prioritize the work on it.
  12. Well, that sounds interesting. I'm encountering similar problem with Inter video card 810, and even submitted a bug report: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=54576 I'll try your solution when I get home. Unfortunately I do not know if installing from Free can solve your problem, but my wild guess would be that it can't. I don't see a reason for the configuration files to be different, but I'm really not an expert. You should wait for more replies.
  13. AFAIK, Nvidia cards do not suffer from the same problem caused by Intel cards. So as Baston and SilverSurfer suggested, it's probably the unebootin. Unfortunately I know nothing about it, and can't help you much.
  14. Hi there, Which graphic device do you have? Apparently kernel 2.6.31.1 has problems running X on Intel chips. That can also explain why you had problems with other distros, assuming they are also running same kernel version. Please see the bug report I submitted: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=54576 If you also have Intel graphic chip and encountering similar problem, you can add a comment on the bug page, so Mandriva will put the heat on Intel drivers development team. EDIT - P.S: At the moment I don't see a way to fix this problem. You may try installing 2009.1 and wait for the fix before you upgrade to 2010.0. If someone thinks I'm wrong and has an idea how to cope with the problem, I'll be glad to hear and try it.
  15. Hi, Does anyone know if it is also available in live mode? I'd like to test it after RC1 failed to load, but I can't seem to find it on any of the repositories.
  16. Hey there, I'm running Mandriva 2009.1. I've installed Scicraft from the official repositories, with all its dependencies. When running scicraft-ng from terminal, I get: (scicraft-ng:7520): atk-bridge-WARNING **: AT_SPI_REGISTRY was not started at session startup. (scicraft-ng:7520): atk-bridge-WARNING **: IOR not set. (scicraft-ng:7520): atk-bridge-WARNING **: Could not locate registry Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/scicraft-ng", line 26, in <module> from system import scicraftapp, project, workflow, logger, workflowimport File "/usr/lib/scicraft-ng/system/scicraftapp.py", line 12, in <module> from system import project, workflow, dataset, logger, plots, navigator, views File "/usr/lib/scicraft-ng/system/project.py", line 7, in <module> from system import dataset, plots, dialogs, logger File "/usr/lib/scicraft-ng/system/plots.py", line 2, in <module> import scipy, Numeric, rpy, scipy.stats ImportError: No module named rpy And nothing happens. I believe the first three lines are irrelevant, because I also get them when I'm running FF, for example, and they don't have any noticeable influence on the performence. So I believe it's the last part of the error message that gives me troubles. Did anyone run Scicraft on Mandriva successfully? Should I submit a bug report? Thanks!
  17. Hi Tony, First, welcome aboard! :) Thanks for the review. As Nexus mentioned, we encourage you to share these findings with Mandriva. Regarding the search in MCC Package Manager - I couldn't agree more. I remember it was possible in Mandriva 2007, but somewhere along the way they removed this feature (probably to improve responsiveness), but I think it is mandatory.
  18. XFE is a total-commander-like files manager. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "locked tabs feature", but you can check for yourself: http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/index.php?page=features

  21. Does anyone know if it will be released as an update to 2009.1, or will I need to wait for 2010.0?
  22. pdfedit can do these kind of things. I tried to use it once and found it not very user-friendly, but for small things like merge/split it's reasonable. EDIT: Oh, there are also online applications that will do this work for you (if you don't mind exposing the documents to third party). http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&cli...mp;oq=&aqi=
  23. First, welcome aboard. :) I tried both: I copied into my xml file the code you presented and rebooted, but it didn't help. I then renamed .gconf directory. After reboot I got a new desktopm, but the problem was not solved. As I mentioned, I do have another user where the problem does not appear, so I guess the source to the problem simply isn't in .gconf. Thanks anyway!
