  1. I may be wrong in terms of language here (I'm new), but I run a GNOME desktop. Isn't that different from KDE? If so, what are my options?
  2. I have Mandriva One running on my Sony Vaio, and I absolutely love it. These two problems are a bit nagging, however. The touchpad is way too sensitive, and it is set so that just barely touching it triggers a "click." This means that when I am just regularly typing, if my thumb accidentally brushes the the touchpad, the cursor moves to a different part of the screen. It's infuriating. Is this fixable? The regular mouse settings don't seem to offer a way. The other problem is suspending or hibernating the machine. Ideally, I'd love to be able to simply shut the lid to put the computer to sleep. If that's not possible, I'd love to be able to hit suspend, and then just push a key to wake it up. But when I do this, it freezes upon starting back up. Any ideas? 3. That was fairly painless. I assume this is the pertinent information? Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "Generic" ModelName "Flat Panel 1440x900" HorizSync 31.5-90 VertRefresh 60 # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output. # 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630 # 768x576 @ 100 Hz, 61.6 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616 EndSection Now this is starting to make sense to me. I installed Ubuntu on a Old World Apple Powerbook a few months ago, and was having a similar problem. The solution was to modify the xorg.conf file. I had to change the HorizSync and the VertRefresh. Same issue here? Do you know what I should change it to? And also, how do I change it through Terminal. I forget how it works.
  4. I'd love to, but I'm sort of new to this Linux thing. Is there a terminal command I need to input to spit this information out?

  6. I just installed Mandriva One on my Intel iMac Core Duo via Parallels. It seems super fast, but my screen is stuck at 800 X 600, and it will not let me change it. Any ideas how I fix this? I have the 17 inch iMac.
  7. Thanks a bunch, arctic. I will let you know what I can figure out.
  8. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I am fairly new to Linux and completely new to Mandriva. I primarily use Ubuntu and Xubuntu. So when you say install im-sensors, what do you mean? How do I do that? In Ubuntu, there was something called Synaptic, which allowed you to search for software. Does Mandriva have something similar? In terms of taking the laptop apart, cleaning the vents and applying some magical paste — well, I have little experience opening up laptops, but I am not concerned about a warranty. So with some good instructions, I am sure I could figure this out. Can you point me in the right direction? Are their any guidelines online? Also, how much does the magic paste cost? Where can I buy it? Thanks again for all the responses. I am really pleased with Mandriva so far — I could not believe how easy the setup was in comparison to Ubuntu 6.10 (I was under the impression Ubuntu was the gold standard in terms of Linux distros — guess I was wrong)
  9. First of all, I am completely new to Mandriva, having given up all hope on Ubuntu. I am running Mandriva One on a Sony Vaio (PCG-GRT100) with 512 MB of RAM and a 2.0+ghz Intel Pentium 4 processor. I am getting a message in Terminal that the CPU Temperature is above its threshold, which makes sense, since from the time the Operating System boots, the fan is blowing like there's no tomorrow, and the back and bottom of the machine are really hot. Anyway that I can fix this? Also, I have Desktop Effects (Compiz/XGL) enabled, but the fan was blowing like this before I enabled those effects, and, in fact, also blew like this when I was running Feisty Fawn and Open Suse. Please help. [moved from Hardware - arctic]
