  1. I concur.

Reinstalling is almost always a mistake in Linux, because a. it does not usually cure anything, and 2. it does not let you drop the typical windows mentality.

You should only reinstall only in cases of a major fookup, e.g broken glibc or perl (the latter is not so critical for other distros, but for Mandriva it is, because MCC goes tits up).

what do you mean by 'it does not cure anything?' ? if you mean that the problem will show up again at the next update (if the update was the trouble), well, you are surely right... but I need my pc, I cannot stay with a non working OS for weeks.. I'd end up using windows again...so I'll think I'll reinstall, and then keep looking for some answers for the old problem.. so that when it'll show up again I'll be better prepared! or maybe I'll be so well prepared that it won't show up at all ;)

surely I'll be very careful about updating a kernel, next time!

thank you for your help, anyway!

  2. @chiara, I have no idea if the test screen works you should be able to get an X running :wall:

if the test screen should be a sort of rainbow background with a small window asking 'is this the correct setting? yes/no' then it was ok!

I have no idea, I think I'll try re-installing... is there any special reccomendation to avoid troubles? I had a 200.1 free, what if I install the one now (because of the proprietary ati drivers)?

    thanks!

  3. the dkms-ati one is the propietary one...

    anyway try

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup (or use a livecd or other distro you might have installed or urpmi mc and use mc....)

and run XFdrake again choosing the non proprietary driver at least you will get X back......

i tried this and then ran aticonfig, but it say it cannot fine the configuration file, please copy a configuration file into X11...

I tried changing drivers, the best result I got was a good trial page, but no good x starting...

    thanks!

  4. you didnt need to remove dkms first it would just have compiled a new kernel module and put it a directory for the new kernel, this explains why the driver doesnt work with the old kernel anymore either....

I have an nvidia card not ati, so dont know to much about the peculiarities of ati but did you run XFdrake already? You should at least be able to select the non proprietary driver and get an X going....

at the fist boot after upgrade I did have the non-proprietary driver, at least I think so, it was the dirver for ati x1300-somethingelse family, which I also used when I first installed mandriva, before installing dkms-ati. (is this the non-proprietary driver?I think so because it was in the free mandriva isntallation dvd, but if not, which one should I choose?)

in this situation I tried both the new and old kernel, but it was always not working.

as this did not work I uninstalled and reinstalled dkms ati with the new kernel source... I know it's stupid, but I didn't know how to simply compile the drivers! just don't know the commands!

  5. I already installed kernel source (whole!) far my new kernel (2.6.17-14)

then urpme dkms-ati (because it was compiled for the -13 kernel), urpmi dkms-ati.

    then aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

then, tryng to configure with mcc, I got errors (cannot open /dev/fb0:no such file or directory; no device detected).

and everything is still the same!

  6. hi everybody!

I installed mandriva 2007.1 free one month ago on my laptop and succesfully configured my ati x1300 graphic card, with 3d and everything.

yesterday I let the system update and now the x-server it won't work. I have 2 more options on my grub menu (mandriva, windows and mandriva safe mode as always, now there are also linux with kernel 2.6.17-13 and linux with kernel 2.6.17-14). none of the options will work: the screen appears totally corrupted.

I tried configuring the graphic card from safe mode but I got only error messages:

    cannot install ati-kernel-2.6.17-13mdv

(ee) problem parsing the config file

(ee) error parsing the config file

afte doing aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf (as I did after the first intallation to get the 3D working) i got

(ee) cannot open /dev/fb0: no such file or directory

    (ee) no devices detected

    could anyone please help?

    thanks!

  7. I bought a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo SI 18-48 and installed Mandriva 2007.1, dual booting with win xp mediacenter.

everything is working fine, except for the card reader (not working at all and I have no idea how to make it work).

I only had a bit of trouble to get the ATI card working with 3D, but I got it (and I am a total newbie, so everyone can get it!)!

  8. try as your normal user... (starts it without plugins and stuff)

    firefox -safe-mode

I treid it... still nothing happens (empty line)

    1) Rename the .mozilla directory from your user dir to something like .mozilla-backup.

you mean usr/lib/firefox? there is also usr/lib/mozilla

I also tried modifieng menu entries, pointing to usr/bin/firefox or usr/bin/mozilla, but nothing has changed...

    thanks!!

  9. Try

    which firefox

(in the control centre check the name of the files it installs if this doesn't work.. could be mozilla-firefox etc. )

do it as root and as the user...

    I tried both:

    [chiara@localhost Desktop]$ which firefox

    /usr/bin/firefox

    [chiara@localhost Desktop]$ which mozilla-firefox

    /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox

as root it gives exactly the same answers

when you say nothing.... does it just give an empty line or sit there doing nothing .. ??? (and you need to crtl+C to stop it)

I mean empty line, where I could enter another command

  10. Start it from a non-root CLI....

It will then probably tell you that some lock file needs deleting or similar... because this is on a per user per profile basis...

    it simply says nothing....

    you can also type

    ps -ef |grep firefox

and check its not running but stalled somewhere...

    I get:

    [chiara@localhost Desktop]$ ps -ef |grep firefox

    chiara 7106 7059 0 15:13 pts/1 00:00:00 grep --color firefox

where the word 'firefox' is red

  11. hi everybody!

I am new to linux, just installed mandriva and got it to work as I wish... just one thing remains a mistery: if I launch firefox from the taskbar or from the menu it won't start, I see it loading... and then nothing more. but if I launch it from terminal, by writing 'firefox' as root, it works without any problem.

I already uninstalled it, rebooted, reinstalled, did it again choosing a different version (mozilla-firefox instead of mozilla-firefox-it)... it's always the same.

    how could I solve this?

thanks very much for any help!!

  12. I solved te trouble, I post here my solution in case it is useful to someone:

    I installed task-3ddesktop and run

    aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

    (found somwhere in mandriva forums)

now everithing is perfectly ok! great!

    thanks to everybody!

  13. After installing dkms-ati (and, I hope, ati and kernel-source) you don't just have to reboot - you also have to run through the graphics card configuration routine from the control center and switch to the proprietary driver there. Good luck :)

sorry for the stupid question, but... how shall I do that??

    thanx!

  14. in xorg.conf generated by live edition, in modules section, there is glx as well as dri.

moreover, in section 'device' the xorg.conf from live has driver "fglrx", the one from installed "fbdev".

shall I simply change those entries or should I do something else before?

Here is a little bit different topic:

Looking at the 2 xorg.conf files, I also noticed there are differences about monitors and screens: I have a 1280x800 monitor, which the live edition correctly idenifies, while the installed free edition allows me only a 1024x768 resolution.

In xorg.con from live (monitor section) there are a couple of entries like this one

    # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake]
    ModeLine "1280x800_120" 181.21 1280 1376 1520 1760 800 801 804 858 -HSync +Vsync

missing in the xorg.conf from installed.

In section 'screen' subsection 'display' as well, the live xorg.conf has Modes "1280x800", while the installed one has Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480". How can I get the installed one to work just as the live does?

    Thank you so much!

  15. old problem, I know... I read all topics here about it, but I cannot figure out what exactly I should do: I installed mandriva 2007.1 on my laptop and this is the first time at all I try to seriously use linux.

Here is exactly what I did:

tried mandriva one live: 3D worked fine

installed mandriva free: 3D didn't work

downloaded and installed dkms-ati, with kernel source and dependencies (at least, I think so), rebooted. Still 3D doesn't work (it says that my system doesn't support 3D. with glxinfo I get 'GLX missing').

Now (after installin dkms) I have ati control panel, but when I access it I see 'driver does not provide FireGL x11 extension'.

could anyone please give me a hint?

  16. The networking wizard may be broken (and anyway, it never was something more than an annoyance). Install a small package named rp-pppoe, usage via root console is trivial (although there's also a GUI available).

Do you get any error messages if you start firefox from a terminal?

I do have rp-pppoe and tried it, the set up seems to go all right, when I start the connection it gives no error, but still I cannot see any web page using konqueror.

how do I start firefox from terminal?

  17. Hi everybody,

I have a fresh install of mandriva 2007.1 free on a laptop (fujitsu diemens amilo si1848, intel core duo 2 t7200, ati x1300) and I can't connect to the internet.

I have an ethernet modem, well working under windows with pppoe; I configured the connection through the control center wizard, but whatever I choose I get no connection.

Moreover: Firefox is not starting: when I select it, I see "starting firefox" for a while and then nothing happens!

    Thanks for any suggestion

  18. Hi everybody,

I have to buy a new laptop and I'd like to switch to linux (I used windows before); I looked at some distros, asked for some advice and Mandriva is the one I'd like best... but wich laptop should I buy?? :P

My favorites are Toshiba Satellite A100-117, with intel core duo 2 t5200 and geForce Go 7300, and an Asus, I cannot remember its code but it always has intel core duo 2 and nvidia geforce.

Do you know if there are any known problems with their hardware? I looked a bit around the net but often I cannot find neither good nor bad news...

    Thanks!
