  1. I don't know how to do what you are telling me. I don't know what directory it is in, but it is in the updates folder. I don't know very much about mandrake yet.
  2. I am using guarddog and for some reason it stopped letting gnutella access the internet. I have even disabled it adn I still cannot access the net. Is the problem guarddog or gnutella?
  3. I just downloaded audacity and I have no idea on how to install it. I went to install package and it couldn't find it. It is in a tgz format ? I guess . audacity-src-1.0.0-2.tgz this is what the name of the download is. How do I install this ?
  4. I don't know what shorewall is, I am using guarddog, will it be the same process?
  5. Does Mandrake have an audio format converter, An applications that lets you convert files between the different audio formats? I have GRIP and it doesn't seem to be capable of that, or maybe I just don't know how to do it. I want to convert ogg and mp3 back to wav files so they will work on a regular cd player. I had good converter that I downloaded for windooz, , but I am running madrake 9.1 now(no win blows).
  6. I don't know how to do what you are advising. I am new to mandrake.
  7. I cannot get gtk gnutella to connect. It was working fine a couple of days ago, but all of a sudden it doesn't work. I tried dis abling my firewall and it still won't connect. I did just update my system. Maybe that has something to do with it.
  8. I can't remember how to change my software update sources. I did it before, but it was awhile ago. I am using 9.1
  9. It is my understanding that they scan your computer to see what you are offering for download, and then they contact your isp. When i was using kazaa lite 2.02, there was an option to not allow anyone to get a complete playlist from your computer, I assumed (I know, an assumption is the mother of all ****-ups) that was so the RIAA couldn't see what you are offering; they wouldn't know if you were offering 3 or 3000 songs for download. I got the impression the gtk-gnutella doesn't use playlists like kazaa. The college where I am going has started offering fines to people that are caught downloading, using the campus net (this seems like a violation of the privacy act) and they are making them write a letter of apology to the RIAA.
  10. I am running guarddog and gtk-gnutella, and I was wondering if the record companies could still scan my computer to see how many items of copyrighted materail I could possibly be sharing? Supposedly my computer is invisable, I went to a web site that scans for ports. How vulnerable am I? And isn't it illegal for them to scan for that information?
  11. Thank you. I have a hard time finding what I want to know in most of the help sections, and usually it is something fairly simple. I really appriciate everyones help and the Mandrake users board.

    fluxbox

I don't know how to access the cd and floppy drives from fluxbox. I was also wondering if there was some way to log out other than ctrl/altbackspace.

    urpmi

I don't know if remind is on plf or not. I said I had plf as an update source, I didn't say that was where I got the softwear. I hace contrid, texstar, and plf as update sources.

    urpmi

I tried mandrake update and it says they are installed when I am using a terminal, but it doesn't list them in install or remove software daemons (right word?), and I cant run them.

    urpmi

I am trying to install new softwear, and I get a message "unable to take medium "update_source" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.update_source] exists" "no package named remind exists" when I type "urpmi remind" as root I have installed softwear this way before (gnutella, guarddog, gnupg). I have had the same thing happen on 5 different pieces of softwear (angband, remind, twclock, tkweather, oneko). Do I need to do something different. I tried updating the rpm db, it didn't help. :?:
  18. it didn't help, It still won't log on to the faster connection
  19. Here's my problem: I am using dial up, I have an external modem. There are two lines I can connect on, but one is much faster than the other. The fast line won't connect, the log file keeps telling me that it is not 8 bit clean. I have found that I need to change the number of configuration request sent to the isp. I was told to change the number in the ppp options. I was told I need to enter: lcp-max-configure 30 Every time I tried to open options I would get permission denied. I just want to know how to change this. I am exteremly new to linux, I have only had it on my computer for about two weeks, the fisrt week and ahlf with out internet , until I figured out that I had to turn off the lan connection. This atleast letsme access the slower internet connection, and it is reallly slow! So, if someone could help me change the max configure requests of the ppp I would really appreciate it.
  20. I am trying to change the options of the ppp, but it won't let me. I have been opening a terminal and logging in as root, and when I enter the command /etc/ppp/options I get the reply bash: /etc/ppp/options: permission denied I thought I had the permission to do anything as root How do I change this permission to allow me to change the options?

    kppp/pppd

I am having trouble with ppd/kppp. It won't connect on high speed dial up, but it will on the slower speed line. It did connect a couple of times on the high speed then it stopped. The monitoring options of kppp don't work either. I'm not sure what to do. I have an external modem which seems to be working fine. The error log reports that something is not 8 bit clean. I assume it needs something changed in the set up.
