  1. Dear All, I have tried to install the jre but with out any success. I did read the instructions in the "Mandrivausers" Forum section. I have followed the following method. (please note that the downloaded file is on my desktop) 1. Downloaded the "jre-1_5_0_02-linux-i586-rpm.bin" from java.com to the desktop. 2. Opened console and typed "su" typed password. 3. cd/ home/xxxx(my user id)/Desktop 4. [root@localhost Desktop]# chmod a+x jre-1_5_0_02-linux-i586-rpm.bin 5. chmod: cannot access `jre-1_5_0_02-linux-i586-rpm.bin': No such file or directory 6. [root@localhost Desktop]# cd [root@localhost ~]# cd /usr/java 7. [root@localhost java]# chmod a+x jre-1_5_0_02-linux-i586-rpm.bin chmod: cannot access `jre-1_5_0_02-linux-i586-rpm.bin': No such file or directory The other commands like " ./jre-1_5_0-linux-i586.bin " also do not work. Please guide me. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  2. Hi, I tried both the methods but still have not succeeded in starting to have my my Printer work in Linux. The Canon site site claims that the Pixma ip 1500 works fine in Linux. Please some one guide me if I am making a mistake. The drivers have been downloaded on my desktop. Thanks.
  3. I recently installed Mandriva 2007. I also have a Canon Pixma 1500 connected to the computer. The printer works fine in WINDOWS but in Mandriva, when a command is given to print, the printer light starts blinking but nothing happens after that. I gave the lpq command and it showed queuing enabled printing enabled 1 entry daemon present After some time it shows 0(zero)entries present. I am baffled at this behaviour. I am a newbie at linux so pls if some could guide me in steps, i would be grateful.
  4. Hi Guys, Sorry to have messed up. Actually I am trying both, upgrade to Firefox 2.0 and also add Java Runtime as a add on. The post was meant to be for Java addon. Now I will try to upgrade to Firefox from the Software Manager in MCC. But I think the problem of Java still will be unsolved. Please suggest a way to resolve this issue and thanks for your inputs.
  5. Hi all, I have Firefox 1.5.0.7 version and downloaded Firefox 2.0. as a rpm self extracting file. The downloaded file is in my download foloder. I tried to install the file to usr/java using chmod: command but the file is not recognised. "No such file or directory is the reply". So I copied the file to usr/java and tried again but again had the same result. I had logged in as root user. I tried the same after cd / into the download directory but still have the same result. The process given on the java website is as follows - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To install the Linux RPM (self-extracting) file Follow these instructions: 1. At the terminal: Type: su 2. Enter the root password. 3. Change to the directory in which you want to install. Type: cd For example, to install the software in the /usr/java/ directory, Type: cd /usr/java Note about root access: To install the JRE in a system-wide location such as/usr/local, you must login as the root user to gain the necessary permissions. If you do not have root access, install the JRE in your home directory or a subdirectory for which you have write permissions. 4. Change the permission of the file you downloaded to be executable. Type: chmod a+x jre-1_5_0-linux-i586-rpm.bin 5. Start the installation process. Type: ./jre-1_5_0-linux-i586-rpm.bin This displays a binary license agreement. Read through the agreement. Press the spacebar to display the next page. At the end, enter yes to proceed with the installation. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Please can any one tell me the mistake I am doing. I am using MANDRIVA 2007
  6. Hi Guys, I just got tired connecting to the Net using the USB connection and got a Router to connect. This worked like magic and I now am connected tothe Internet using Mandriva as OS. Thanks for all the responses and the enthusiasm shown by the members in replying to my queries, it always pepped me up.
  7. Hi again, I tried out startadsl in the root and it returned as :no such command I have observed the following 1. During start boot up.. one of the messages is connection .......................terminated; the next line is 0,38 ................................already in use This 0.38 refers to the VCI/VCP for connection to tiscali. 2. On the modem only POWER light is ON the ADSL light remains OFF. 3. I tried the ifconfigure -a and got a output but it says 0 transmitted, 0 recd etc. 4. The lib/firmware contains 2 sub directories........../ueagle-atm and /ueagle-data-1.1. The ueagle-atm does not contain any file.(I must have created the other sub dir when I was copying). I tried to remove it but the console returns that no such dir or file found. I tried to rename it but again the returned message says the same thing as no such dir found. The other sub dir.../ueagle-data-1.1 contains the actual tar files (extracted). I tried using mv -T /ueagle-atm /oldeagle but the same msg was returned. Are the sub dir in conflict? I tried going to /lib/firmware/ueagle-data-1.1 and giving command autogen.sh which returned as no such command.
  8. 1.All the cables are connected correctly (I guess) as I am using the same computer (in windows) to connect to the net. 2. I have not run eagleconfig as I was under the impression that this will run at startup automatically when the files are in the system. I notice that there are two sub directories i.e ueagle-atm/ueagle-data-1.1 instead of one as suggested. Will this create a problem? 3. Yes I did set up a new connection, pppOA in the Control Centre. I shall try the startadsl, ping and eaglediag-msc. I am not sure how to run the eagleconfig.
  9. Hi again, I have copied the ueagle 1.1 fw files to /lib/firmware/ueagle-atm/ueagle-data-1.1. After this I reconfigured the Internet connection and set to pppOA. However I am still not being able to connect to the Internet. In the boot up process, I can go to the verbose mode by pressing ESC but I cannot go to the interactive mode by pressing i. The key is perhaps not accepted and the booting continues at its own pace. Secondly I find that the in the boot up the connection tothe Inetrnet FAILED message is present also shows as the address 0.38 (this is the address given by Tiscali,Uk) as not available for use. What am I doing wrong? Again I have to thank all the people , especially ianw1974 and arctic for patiently trying to help me. I am sure that I would not have got this type of response/support from a Software selling firm aftersales.
  10. This time I tried connecting to the Internet. I got a error message that the machine does not have "/lib/firmware/ueagle-atm/eagle*.fw", therefore I downloaded the file fm eagleusb. I also downloaded the driver software for my Sagem f@st 800 modem. Both are stored in the files on my desktop. How do I copy these files to the Linux so that my driver error msg is removed? Pls guide.
  11. Followed ianw 74 's suggestion and waited. After a wait of 3-4 minutes the boot up started again and completed. However I could not get into the interactive mode by pressing the I button (lower or uppercase). By pressing ESC I could see the verbose booting action. Thanks to ianw74 and pindakoe for the suggestions. This problem is solved. However I have a problem for connecting to the net, which I have posted in the Networking section. Pls see and help.
  12. Hi, I have configuired the connection as pppoA but after that the browser still cannot connect to the Internet. When I go in the system config, it gives me a screen in the "Managing connections" section where I am given 2 choices for the Device:(in the drop down box) 1. eth0: VIA Tech Inc|VT 6102 [Rhine II 10/100] .... this is the LAN card in the system 2. adsl: (ppp0) ......... this is the type of connection I have. Tiscali UK ADSL.........I chose this.< In the TCP/IP section, in the IP configure subsection the screen gives in 3 choices in the Protocol, a. none................ I chose none. b. Static c. DHCP The next boxes of Net mask and Gateway are in subdued text (cannot be selected), DNS server is blank and again the cursor cannot be placed in the box. Search domain has "none" filled in. In the Miscellaneous Internet settings section, the screen asks for 1. Host name 2. 1st DNS server. 3. 2nd DNS server 4. 3rd DNS server all are optional choices. Kindly guide if the choices made are correct if not what are the correct choices. Thanks
  13. Actually I also want to use the Internet. This is the reason I configured the Network. I will try to wait for a longer period, the most I have waited is about 1 minute.
  14. I am Newbie and am finding my way with help from the forum users. After installation of Mandriva, I tried to configure the Network connection and selected PPPoE. The prog asked me to insert the installation CDs which I did. After this the computer freezes (does not proceed further) during Boot up at a particular juncture as follows Checking for New Hardware...........................................OK Staring ALSA version 1.0.12 : via 82xx............................OK Starting HAL daemon.....................................................OK After this the cursor just stays there blinking and the process stops here. I think the via 82xx is for the VIA Rhine II Ethernet Fast adapter but not sure. Earlier Mandriva was functioning Normal except it was not connecting to the Internet. Please help. Biddu.
