  1. I know I may be the only person in the world (besides those who developed it) who likes Redhats bluecurve. I'm currently using RH9 but want to switch back to Mandrake which I like better :) However I really like the default look of RH9, is there a way to get this theme to work on Mandrake 9.1? Or perhaps 9.2 when its out? Also everyone of my family and friends love the screensavers in RH9  can they be installed on Mandrake? Im a newbie so Ill need to be lead by the hand a little on doing these things, if they are even possible. One last item, is the supermount problem being fixed on 9.2? I haven't seen anyone mention it and was just wondering. I know when I tried to install some games on mdk it drove me nuts until I figured out how to turn it off. As a non programer it seems like they would fix that easily so it works proerly, But I'm not a programer nor do I play one on TV, so it may be a bigger hassle than just turning it off. Anyways thanks in advance as I know the answers are out there and Please don't hate me because I like the bluecurve. :?
  2. I've been using a cheap isp called Access-4-Free. You get up to 10hrs free per month, after that you get charged up to 9.95. Or you can just pay the 9.95 and get unlimited internet. I've used it with both redhat and mandrake (and XP) with no problems at all. Not sure if they have new york numbers, but its worth a look. Also you get charged 4.95 to sign up with them. heres their link: http://www.access-4-free.com/faq.htm
  3. Im currently running redhat 9 and tried to install wine(20030813), I got the rhp version and during the make depend && make I got this error: LD_LIBRARY_PATH="../../unicode:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" ../../tools/winebuild/winebuild -fPIC -L../../dlls -sym dxdiagn.tmp.o -o dxdiagn.spec.c -spec ./dxdiagn.spec ./diagn.spec:8: could not open .so filw foe oleaut32.dll make[2]: ***[dxdiagn.spec.c] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory '/home/steve/wine/dlls/dxdiagn' make[1]: ***[dxdiagn.spec.c] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/steve/wine/dlls' Now what do I need to do? Thanks in advance for your help

    WordPerfect 8

Does word perfect work well in linux? I never had good luck with it in windows. I have a disc for a linux version, but its older. I know it has some really nice features and I'd like to try it agian it it works well.
  5. Chris, you've also summed up my feelings. I started June 1, 2003 with Mandrake 9.1, then switched over to redhat 9.0 August 3, 2003. From what i've seen posted it seems that if you "upgrade" your system becomes fubar. I too want to break away from Microsoft (New op coming soon get your $ ready) but I am no way comfortable enough with Linux to do that. I use both XP and 98se at work, but have stopped using ms office in favor of openoffice and I use Mozilla and opera as my main browsers. just to be more familar with some of my Linux apps. But the dependecy hell problem drives everyone nuts, I know steps are being taken to correct this, but for anyone new to linux it kills the interest real fast. Especially if they don't find a good forum like this one to ask questions on.
  6. I found this  :article:http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973...,1236319,00.asp I can agree with some of this. As a newbie I'd like to see Any distro (preferably mandrake or redhat) ship us all a finished version, with minimal bugs (no ones pefect so why should we expect perfection?). Redhat is now usuing apt-get, and mandrakes gurpmi (?) are steps in the right direction, but I think it could be better. I just want more of the bugs worked out before I put the next release on my box. I know me though and Ill get it asap after release no matter :?
  7. Wow what a jerk. Maybe he should be the company spokesman :!: :!: :? Instead of looking for his crystral ball, he should have his head pulled out of his...(you know what I mean). I tell you, he makes me want to run to best buy and wait for the next release of RedHat. And I bet he thought he was being clever. Anyway I know I'll end up downloading RH10 when it's release and MDK9.2 also, but since I'm still learning, I'm in no big hurry.
  8. Has anyone tried Lunar Linux?? I came acrossed it but as a newbie ran far from it  It didn't seem to use rpms or apt-get and I wasnt even clear on what came with the distro. Anyways is it a another choice for newbies to learn on or one we should stay away from??

    US Robotics Modem

Yes my bad Is usb support in linux getting better? I only have a game pas that usb and dont' use it much anymore. Other than that its either serial or ps/2. I think you can get a gender changer to make it serial, but not sure how well it works.

    US Robotics Modem

I use a US robotics external fax/modem with no problems. Just use the internet connection wizard, go through those steps and your on. As long as you IP is linux friendly that is. Then use KPPP as your dialer (Its in the ineternet menu). I have to say I was very happy at how easy it is to connetc to the web in both Mandrake 9.1 and Redhat 9.0.
  11. Ok Im in. Now I know more than I did yesterday at least, but it still isn't much  . Anyways I now have a quick launch icon for mplayer. Thanks. I looked at my /etc/apt/sources folder and it was empty. Can I specify in synaptic to always download the src.rpm?? Or does it matter. I'm still not clear on src. files. Do I want them in the event of a system upgrade? ie- redhat9.xx or 10 or 11 or whatever?? And the reason Im now using Redhat is: It looks better to me, their version of supermount works, and it gets me more linux experience. I want to eventually try Debian, Lunar, maybe Gentoo, and then decide which suits me the best. I had good luck using Mandrake( 2-3months) I've only been using redhat a couple of weeks (work has limited my actual time) so in a few months I'll try another distro, but I have a feeling That for me its between Redhat and Mandrake, simply because of my family- The other distros seem too difficult for those with little computer knowledge. Not That I have much
  12. Not sure. i'll look at that also, Im at work and its on my home pc. ( I just surf here alot :lol also thanks I've seen -Uvh before but didn't know what is was
  13. Thanks for the tips. As a newbie Im getting better at usuing Linux, but sometmes seem to revert in a MS mode of: DUHHH! anyways thanks
  14. At the momment Im running redhat 9, I say at the momment because I'm considering going back to Mandrake, or getting another hard drive and triple(?) booting. anyways, I used apt-get to install mplayer, if I use the run command gmplayer, it runs no problem. But it doesn't show up in my multimedia menu. I want to add mplayer to either my desktop or taskbar, but I'm not sure how. If it was in the multimedia menu it would be so easy, but since its not, where do i find it? I know its probally so simple, but can't figure it out. Also how do you uninstall programs in linux? I'm going to install wine, but when a new one comes out Ill want to update, so how is that done?
  15. Is there a simple way to get my mouse wheel to work in redhat 9? Its a logitech mouseman, and it drives me nuts no being able to scroll up and down a page. I would think that by now this feature would be automatically set at install, after all it sees I have a "third" button (which shows as a wheel, but NOOOOOOOOO!! lol
  16. I pretty much agree with chris. I like linux, but sometimes the tweaking / configuring gets old. Not that I havent had my problems with M$. Now I have no plans to abandon Linux or give up M$. When and if I feel linux has matured enough for my daughter to easily run it, then maybe I switch to a single boot. I would miss some games, but if enough of us don't by M4 compatible games and contact those publishers about a linux port, that problem would go away. Yeah I know I could use wine or winex, or just stay with M$. What would you choose if you couldn't read yet, yeah that's why my daughter likes M$ it uses the KISS method. Do I want to loose the configuration features in linux? No, i just want the items I install to work without dependency hell. (Redhat, Debian and Mandrake are doing better but what about third party apps?)
  17. Thanks for all your help. After doing more research and downloading the first two iso (so Im covered right lol) I have decided to.................. install redhat 9 over my mandrake 9.1. I don't think Im ready for a deian system just yet. I mean Im having trouble figuring out redhat from mandrake. I have the internet up and running, nvidia gforce drivers running smoothly, but still trying to find things on this system, like control panel (which I loved in Mandrake). I will someday load debian however, I'll just do it on a samll harddive, not one Im sharing with my wife and daughter.
  18. See I keep hearing about this WOODY debian but cant find it. Not on their website or at www.linuxiso.org . Is this just the 3.0 release name, ie- mdk9.1 bamboo or rh9.0 shrike? Thanks for the tips however, this helps alot.
  19. Ok Im a mdk9.1 user considering trying Debian. My question is which and how many iso disks do i need? In their installation guide they show different Flavors of install, do I need to get all of the Flavors or can I get by with Vanilla and compact?
  20. Ive only used knoppix a a live cd on my friends pcs to show them Linux. I like Mandrake but to improve my linux skills I was just thinking of trying another distro.
  21. Ok, Im still very new with Mandrake (since June) but I was thinking of trying out either debian or Knoppix. I have Knoppix live cd and Have used it just to show friends what linux really looks like, but haven't installed anything, since it runs on the cd. Which distro is easier?? Ill probally keep mandrake also but just want a feel of whats out there.

    What about Racing?

Im with you. I don't exactly like getting off head shots with my 7yr old asking " what happened to him daddy?" It seems that the first person shooter game will dominate Linux as it has Windows gaming. I have found a driving/race simulation game from dolson's site (http://pgshopping.com/mdkxp/?c=games/freegames ) its called racer. Now this gam is a .05 release so take it for that, it lokks good and will get better I'm sure. I was gonna put the direct link but it seemed down, so youll get this list of free games. Anyways I'm planning to pick up some version of sim city for linux and/or railroad tycoon 2 sometime soon. At least I will be able play these in front of my kid!! Hopefully as time goes by and as a community go out and BUY a Linux version of our favorite game when available, more and more companys will bring out games for us. If we don't by games for linux...well go look at the karge selection of Mac games :P :!: oh thats right. If we're veiwed just as leeches by game developers, then we will have to depend on the hacker community to port games for us, then come the virus scares we all enjoy in windows.

    sim city 4?

Just a question, does Sim city 4 include a linux installer (a la ut2k3)? I was just wondering since there is a linux version of sim city 3000 unlimited.
  24. Newbie qustion here, What Kernel ships with 9.1? I haven't done any updates (Dial up connection). I think Im safe as everything seems to say you need to downgrade. Hopefully someone will post how you downgrade your kernel (like upgreading looks easy :P :!: :!: )
  25. Thanks guys. I "saved as" the ut2k3 demo, burned it to disc, and Mandrake actually installed it and it runs smooth!! So that's a easy trick, especially for those of us who are unlucky and have dial up access, but have friends (or work) with high speed internet and a burner!!!
