  1. I think Mel Gobson summed it up best in Braveheart; FREEDOM! Granted, he was being tortured to death at the time but that's not unlike using Windows.
  2. hehe, MS stating in so many words that Windows is not acutally an operating system. Just a program that simulates some OS functions.
  3. I finally got around to giving Celestia a whirl. WOW! That is some major eye candy!
  4. This is a great page of informative reading. Thanks! :)
  5. I would guess that Green Bay might have enough to start a LUG. 8) http://counter.li.org/reports/place.php?pl...Awi%3AGreen+Bay
  6. oops! http://www.fortune.com/fortune/technology/...,466180,00.html Looks like Microsoft has bigger problems than Linux. 8)
  7. hehe, cool link cybrjackle. 8) That's about Micrsosoft's speed. God forbid they should compete in the market by actually providing good products and services.
  8. This article contains a great deal of info. Even a call to arms of sorts to follow Germany's initiative to get court injunctions against SCO. http://mozillaquest.com/Linux03/ScoSource-...ts_Story01.html
  9. It shouldn't be long before the official complaint filings against SCO start piling up. The first thought that comes to my mind is to keep an eye on the FSF and Opensource.org.
  10. That is well covered in the position paper published by opensource.org. (the previous link I posted) Very WELL covered. 8) Also in that position paper is extremely interesting information concerning a 1993 lawsuit between the (then) Unix "rights" owners and BSD. :bsd: Here's some fascinating stuff out of Australia today: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/07/23/...8853121030.html  :mandrake:

  12. Comcast just became our cable provider. They are the fourth company to own the cable system in this area since I bought my house 12 years ago. Continental > MediaOne > AT&T > Comcast.  We got a letter from Comcast last week saying that broadband internet will be available soon. It's about time!!! But I doubt I will switch. SBC's DSL service has been perfect and at $29.95/month I am not planning on going anywhere. 8) If you have SBC call them up and tell them you want a re-write. When I learned that little tip my DSL service went from $49.95 to $29.95. 8)
  13. Yes, that's exactly how it works. :) All you have to do to the router is set the connection type to PPPoE, enter your login name and your password. Absolutely no software has to be installed in Mandrake. :) *That is all there is to it. :) *I put an asterik next to that statement because you may have to run a firmware upgrade on your router to make it work with your internet provider. In my case I had to do this because the router firmware had to be above a certain release level to talk to SBC's network. I found that information on the Linksys tech support page. Note! There will be a huge slowdown at Mandrake bootup time if you have it set to get an IP automatically but there is no DHCP server on your network. You'll see the bootup hang at eth0 for a bit if this is the case. Otherwise it boots fine. So just set Mandrake's TCP/IP for however you have your router set up. Currently I am using my router's DHCP but I am going to assign the IP's myself sooner or later. I just did it that way because I have two Windows boxes on my network and I haven't felt like getting out the CD and rebooting the damn things to change the TCP/IP settings. :) So, literally all I did at Mdk installation was told it to get an IP automatically and my Mdk box was on the 'net. :) I have a Linksys 4 port Cable/DSL router. I bought it when I got my DSL service from SBC about a year and a half ago. It has worked prefect since the day I installed it. :)
  14. Thanks for the heads up Cannonfodder! :) Time to get the latest and greatest. I really love Opera 7! :)
  15. Yup, unless they have REAL deep pockets SCO will go broke trying to fight IBM. It will be interesting to watch the impact on United Linux.
  16. I always install on top of my existing version. It doesn't disturb anything in my /home/.opera directory. But, I don't use the 'replace files' option on the rpm install. That seemed a bit threatening to my /.opera. :)
  17. Sweet! Downloaded and installed. Man, this is looking great! :) I had been using Opera 7P1. I tried P2 but it was missing some things that I need on a regular basis so I went back to P1. Now this TP3 is looking real good. Already found some nice stuff that the Windows 7 can't do! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) Unfortunatly I never seen anything crash as much as this one. P2 was crashing as well. P1 never crashed.... until I went back to it after installing P2. heh. But, this one is a beatuy. I'll put some effort into clean up to address the crashes. I can't wait for final! :)
  18. I'll have to give it a peek soon. :) I used Gaim for well over a year but I've been using kopete for the past month or so. Very, very, very nice. :)
  19. I will probably set up my wife's Mandrake to mimic XP as closely as possible. I'll be purchasing Codeweavers' Crossover Office and the browser plug in. She'll have her MS Office, ICQ, MSN chat thingy and all the various multimedia plugins and such. My wife is not interested in learning Linux. She just wants a stable computer that she is comfortable using. And i'm sick of dealing with her Win98SE box. The damn thing has to go! My Win98SE lisence will live on a separate computer loaded with the plethora of kids activities that have collected over the years. Since she uses XP at work making Mandrake look and act like it (except for the part about XP sucking) will make her happy. :)
  20. grc was my first exposure to 'security information'. I found it by chance when I bough BlackIce several years ago and was browsing their site. BI had a link to Gibson's 'ShieldsUp" thingy. I've read most, perhaps all of his stuff. Pretty informative in a fire and brimstone kind of way. When I first ran ShieldsUp on my old Win95 box I learned about File & Print bindings in TCP/IP. I was showing off everything.
  21. WhooHooo! Fixed 8) It was completely unrelated to Netscape. It was in fact a direct result of trying to get java to work in Opera 6.11 Which I never fully succeeded in doing. I had added some java crap to my .bash_profile and that's what was screwing everything up. I added that stuff weeks ago and but the problem didn't manifest until I logged out of my account and tried to log back in.
  22. Thanks :) I looked at that file. I'm still in the dark. 8) Time to go googling and see why you pointed me in that direction. 8)
  23. LOL, sneaky will work. 8) Not a problem LW. Breaking something means I get to learn something. Perhaps many somethings. I've run Mozilla too. Very, very nice. But, i'm hooked on Opera. 8) At any rate, this Netscape 7.01 that I installed is much nicer than the last time I loaded Netscape when it used to ship with Mandrake.
  24. I installed Netscape 7.01 from Netscape's tar file. I fiddled with a couple other things in the system as well and I don't recall exactly what. Now I am unable to load KDE in my account. Also, when I run some commands at the prompt, such as ls or startx I get this message: startx /bin/sh: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/lib/i386/libawt.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory ls ls: error while.... (same message) When I try to go to the directories named in that string I get stopped at /usr/java/ The system tells me that no such directory exists when I try to get into j2sdk1.4.1_01 Of course, since ls doen't work I can't see anything below /usr/java Any tips would be appreciated. 8)
