  1. another thought.......... i'm not at the Linux box to check the exact place for this, but if you right click on the MPlayer icon/link & choose properties, under one of the property tabs is an option to "run as different user" & "run in terminal". make sure those aren't checked. i had the same problem way back when with MPlayer & somehow my "run as different user" box was checked, which made it run in the background as root when i tried to run it as user & that being the case, the GUI wouldn't come up. Chris
  2. thanks for getting things back up & running anon!!! your work is greatly appreciated. kick back, relax, & have a beer or three now. (just had to work beer into this thread somehow :P ) Chris
  3. i know plugins can be a hassle in Mozilla, Java being probably the worst, but i don't understand why so many people let it give them fits. zero0ow explained the proper method to symlink the Java plugin to Moz. i think what might be happening, is there are conflicting instructions out there as to how to properly symlink the Java. if you do a search on that subject, you'll see what i mean. also, as has been stated, you must use the proper version of Java & gcc32 with the latest builds of Moz. if you are running MDK9.1 & have kept up to date with MDK updates, you have the correct gcc32 libs. if you are running MDK9.2, you're good to go right out of the box. i just installed Moz1.6 yesterday. i had Java (& all other plugins) working perfectly in no time. why Moz can't make an installer that includes some plugins (or, at least) a preinstalled Java package, i dunno. (the Mozilla Windows installer comes with Java!??) anywho, for anybody needing to get Java working in Mozilla1.4 & higher, here is what you need to do & you shouldn't have nary a Java headache......... 1. get the proper version of Java for your Mozilla build. personally, i prefer the Sun Java, but any of these will work for Mozilla1.4 & higher.... Sun JRE1.4.2_X , IBM JRE1.4.X , or Blackdown JRE1.4.X 2.IMPORTANT: CLOSE ANY INSTANCES OF MOZILLA! 3. install the Java per the installation instuctions of the version you are using. 4. make note of where the Java is installed. the default location should be /usr/java or /usr/lib/java 5. in a terminal, as ROOT, change to your Mozilla/plugins directory. if you use the default installation path for Mozilla, that should be /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. so, as ROOT type this.... cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins hit enter if you installed Mozilla to a different directory, then adjust that command as necessary to reflect your /mozilla/plugins path. 6. now, for the fun part! type the following....... ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so type it exactly i posted above, again, making the path reflect your /java directory. hit enter 7. now, to assure yourself the symlink worked, while still in the /mozilla/plugins directory type ls hit enter if you were successful & did the symlink correctly, you should should see the file libjavaplugin_oji.so listed. 8. fire up Mozilla. to amuse & assure yourself even more, click "help" -> "about plugins". it should list your new Java plugin. 9. now, the acid test. go to several Java enabled websites to test your newly installed Java plugin. (several sites, 'cause Java code can vary from site to site, depending on how good or poorly the Java code was written. 10. enjoy your Java, drink a beer, smoke if you're so inclined, donate some money to your favourite charity, & keep these instructions in a safe place for the next time you decide to upgrade Mozilla. and, here's a great tutorials for all Mozilla plugins , Java included. read it, follow the instructions therein, & you'll be good to go with Mozilla & all it's plugins. Chris
  4. VeeDubb, i use the OOo templates available HERE. you said you tried OOo templates but they don't fit your labels (Belkin). apparently OOo Extras doesn't have a Belkin template. but..............what you can do is one of 2 things. 1. (hard) pick an existing template & modify the points & areas to make them fit your Belkin labels. this can be done, but it would involve editing layers, grids, snap points, etc. & you'd probably have to use the trial & error method until you find a perfect fit. 2. (easy) get different labels to match one of the brand name templates that are available. i use the Memorex template & i can vouch for that one whole heartedly. it fits perfectly on the Memorex brand cd/dvd label sheets. never had one not match up. i would think the other brand name templates (if made properly) would work equally as well with the labels they were made to use with. Chris
  5. DOH!!! i thought he meant it was taking hours to compile Konstruct. it makes sense now! Chris
  6. thanks for the info Anon.......umm.....Kernow...... (that's sounds almost Klingon :P ) so, i can just untar it to, say, /opt ? and, where did you find the install readme? i only saw a readme in the main directory, but i didn't see anything in it that had install instructions. could that be because i didn't actually untar it per se, i cheated & just used ARK to see what the contents were? and, 2 plus hours to compile it???!!!! yowza..... i'll check back later for your update & give it a whirl tonight should your review be positive. Chris
  7. the Konstruct app does look cool, from a KDE user perspective. i downloaded the .tar file, but i have a question maybe somebody can answer. where do you untar the package to & how do you install it afterwards? there is a readme file in the tar, but it has no instructions for installation. also, there are no .install or .config files in the tar. so, i'm a bit stumped. i have the app, but have no idea how to put it to use (IE: install it). also, there isn't a FAQ or HELP section on the Konstruct website (at least that i could find). any help would be appreciated. Chris
  8. as Darkelve said.......... i would upgrade the RAM, & chances are excellent that you will see a significant speed increase. i currently am running MDK9.2 on a 9gig partition on a 5 year old IBM Aptiva with an AMD K6 333mhz cpu, & it runs fine. granted.......in all honesty, it's not as peppy as Win98 on the same computer & takes twice as long to boot, but the "peppy" part of it is negligible, as in a second or three slower for some things to load. put as much RAM in there that the computer will allow & that you can afford. (RAM is dirt cheap, especially for older computers such as yours & mine) one other thing..........how large is your /swap? did you set a /swap partition? if not, you need one. if you have one, it may be too small. i'd recommend a 500meg /swap, at least. that may sound excessive, but if you have the hdd space, better safe than sorry. Chris
  9. aze........ though Moz can be frustrating for some to set up (plugins, fonts, etc.) it's really not that difficult. check out these Forum Search Results for a bunch of info on how to get Java & other things working in Moz. probably the easiest method to get Java working, is to use the RPM from the Forum Download Section . if you're looking to try another browser, then i'd recommend trying Opera. the free version only has a tiny ad banner at the top & if you find you like it enough to pay for it, it's really inexpensive for the value you get. very easy to set up/install, plugins are a snap, far more customizable than Moz, & a helluva lot faster for browsing. and, if you're a KDE user & looking for a free browser, why not give Konqueror a shot? it's really not that bad for what ya get. if you take a little time & explore the configurations in it, you can get it looking really nice, the plugins are easier to get working than Moz, it's faster than Moz (but not as fast as Opera), plus......it's free & you have it installed already! Chris
  10. don't know if this will sovle your problem, & i didn't even know this was possible (gotta try this when i get home tonight) but i found this tidbit concerning Kontrol Center while Googling: from reading that, it looks like you can add/remove entries from the Kontrol Center & customize it to your own liking. in lieu of a better solution, it might be worth a shot? Chris
  11. i went to the Flash links you provided (loved the cat song! :D ) & i have no sound problems in MDK using Opera, Moz, or Konq. went to the same sites here at work in Win2k using Moz & IE6.0..........still no sound problem. this is just a hunch on my part, but what kind of sound drivers are you using? are you using drivers specific to your sound card (IE: like an N-Force card using N-Force drivers)? if so, try using plain old ALSA or OSS sound drivers & see what happens. i have heard instances of certain manufacturer specific audio & video drivers having trouble with Flash. if it doesn't solve the sound problem, you could always just switch back to your original sound drivers. Chris

    Ugly Fonts

hmmmm.....not quite sure what you're asking here AussieJohn. your screen shot isn't showing. so, just guessing here, you want to change the Konq menu/files fonts when you run it as root? if so, (going from memory here......work.......no 'nix :( ), while in Konq as root (IE: KDESU) try clicking on "tools" then "configure konqueror". there's a section in there where you can change/set fonts & use different style sheets & such. if this isn't what you're aiming for, then please describe your issue a bit better for me. :P Chris

    cdrtools

run the command as root AussieJohn. that's why you're getting permission denied errors. Chris
  14. hi javabiz....... you might wanna check out this thread, concerning hdlists getting lost...... URPMI Issues seems there's some problems with certain mirrors, causing the hdlists to get hosed. there is a work around listed in that thread until things are straightened out. also, as LiquidZoo said, don't worry about gpg keys. i've ignored many of those warnings & never had a bad rpm install. and, the update source mirrors aren't always up to date, so again, do as LiquidZoo suggested & just change to another update mirror if you keep getting the "void......." message. here's a link tht shows the status of MDK update source mirrors, so you can check to se which ones are most current..... MDK Update Mirrors Chris
  15. this might not be the appropriate Linux approved method, but you could use a Windows boot floppy, choose the "boot to command prompt" option from that, then type: fdisk /mbr enter that will wipe out the lilo boot loader & rewrite the Windows boot sector back to normal. remove the floppy, reboot & make sure it boots into Windows. if so (which it should) shut down the computer, insert MDK disc 1, restart computer, hit F2 at the MDK installation screen, then choose rescue mode, reinstall lilo. that will give you lilo back. remove the disc, reboot, & you should have the lilo boot screen options back. if it just boots into MDK without giving you the boot options screen, let it do so then go to MCC->boot->drakboot & choose the "configure" option so you can set a boot delay time. save that, reboot again, then it should be good. or, like i said, maybe somebody else can give you an all Linux method so you don't have to use an MS floppy at all. EDIT:in lieu of a Windows boot floppy, you could also just tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot up, which would take you to the Windows safe mode boot screen where you'll also have the "command prompt" option. Chris
  16. i was surfing around & came across this...... http://isec.pl/vulnerabilities04.html since i don't fully understand the technical speak, i don't know if this is worth worrying too much about. but, i figured i'd post it for those that might care. Chris
  17. if i'm not mistaken (can't verify this 'cause i'm at work) you can also change the refresh rate in Mandrake Control Center->hardware->monitor. it should give you an option to test the settings you choose before applying them. then you must reboot (or at least restart X) for them to take effect. Chris
  18. hi mandrake_alf, instead of Plugger, try this MozPlugger . it's a better version of Plugger (IMHO), it tends to work without any fiddling, & it comes in rpm format. :D Chris
  19. i have the same problem/nuisance after upgrading to MDK9.2. after searching a bit, i found the following info. this is a known bug with MDK9.2 & the 2.4.xx kernel. see this BUG REPORT . excerpts from above link: there is a ham handed fix listed that involves editing lilo if ya wanna do it. if it is indeed fixed with the 2.6 kernel, then i'll just deal with it until i can get an rpm of that kernel that works or until (perhaps) a patch is released for the 2.4 kernel. Chris
  20. you could also try using aumix & set the volume (& other things) from there. i had the same problem with the KDE volume control (KMix) not holding it's settings. using aumix settings took care of it. it should be in kicker->multimedia->sound. if it's not there use mcc->add software & do a search for it, then install it. Chris
  21. chris-tux....... if you haven't resolved your XFree problem yet, try this........ log in & su to root after you get the error message & are left at the prompt. then, type the following to see what version of XFree packages you have installed..... rpm -qa | grep XFree86 enter rpm -qa | grep XFree86-server enter those commands will tell you what versions of XFree & server you currently have installed. once you know that, write down the exact package names (verbatim, cap sensitive) then do this to remove them....... rpm -e XFree86(complete name of package) enter rpm -e XFree86-server(complete name of package) enter that should remove the XFree86 packages. then procede with the steps i listed a few posts up in this thread to install the XFree86 packages from your MDK cd's via urpmi. post back with results........ Chris
  22. well, i got my problem solved, concerning the duplicate XawTV icons. i unplugged the web cam, which made the icon disappear that MDK9.2 put there. it also got rid of the dynamic link from /usr/share/apps/kdesktop/desktop. i then deleted the dynamic link for the old MDK9.1 XaTV icon in that same directory. then, i went to ~/desktop & edited the .directory file to remove the XaTV icon placement info. plugged the web cam back in, rebooted, & lo & behold i'm left with only one XaTV icon on my desktop, which i can live with. least i know how o get rid of it now, if i wanna. Chris
  23. i have the same nuisance with the XawTV Video icon since upgrading to MDK9.2. i now have the old icon for that on my KDE desktop left over from MDK9.1, & i have a new one from the 9.2 install. one is bad enough, 2 of them are driving me crazy! i'm still looking into proper removal procedures, but haven't found one yet. i've changed permissions to user where the links to those icons originate (i'm at work right now, but they are in something like /usr/share/desktop/apps/.....) & they are dynamically linked. so, even when i delete them, they come back upon reboot. i've also edited the .directory file in /home/user/desktop to remove the references to those icons, but they still come back. i do have a usb web cam, but i haven't tried unplugging it before booting to see if that gets rid of them, but i'll give that a whirl to see if it's even a temporary fix. if anybody comes up with a solution, please post it here. i'll do the same...... Chris
  24. CDROM EJECT PROBLEM SOLVED! ya know, as they say, some times it's the little things........ so, after having tried evrything under the sun to make my cdrom eject normally, i gave this nifty little command a try...... lsof -V /dev/scd1 lo & mutherfreakin' behold! here's what it told me........ KSCD!!!!! i have KSCD set to load upon boot into KDE desktop & dock in the kicker! it (for some reason) also automagically links to cdrom2/scd1, preventing it from being ejected by any way except for CLI. since i play music cd's on the cdrom, i have KSCD set to default to that drive. all i did was quit KSCD, tried mounting, unmounting, then ejecting a data cd from CDROM2 & walla!!! it ejects, both with the eject button on the drive & by right clicking the desktop icon & choosing "eject" from the drop down menu. after weeks of pulling my hair out over this, editing lilo & fstab, screwing with mount points, enabling & disabling supermount, screwing with permissions, posting here & asking in #musb for help, it turns out the answer was staring me in the face all along. so, if anybody ever runs into a problem like this, try that bit of code above, just substituting the path to reflect your device. if you should try it & you get something like this........ then you have to install lsof. just....... urpmi lsof yep, Chris is a happy boy! :P :D  Chris
  25. did you try a search here? if not, check this out........ Java in Moz or, here's a recent thread that discusses this subject..... Java in Moz Thread hope that helps! :D Chris
