  1. I've run MCNL (and still do) on a HUGE variety of hardware, desktps, laptop even the Sony wrist top UMPC and everything seems to pop right up! let us know how it works! and actually id dint know that MFLASH 2008.1 did NOT include the install option. THAT is a shame, and completely VOIS my plans to buy one. Guess I'll wait until 2009 PWP comes out and see how that goes. j

I actually have a desktop with the same basic system. I have NEVER been able to get ANY recent (since 2006) distro of MDV working, nor any of its conversions (MCNL, PCLINUXOS<PENDRIVELINUX etc.) HOWEVER I do have it up and running very nicely with WOLVIX! http://www.wolvix.org/ both their cub and hunter version work well. I'm using it as a CAR - PC pasically a really BIG MP3 player. Try it, but I will tell you their download links blow, it took me 3 or 4 attempts to get a good download. J
  3. well good news. I was able to add KDE 3.5.10. as JK suggested KDM was not loaded. INteresting though, I couldnt get it via MCC software install. Going to terminal SU and urpmi kdm however worked just fine. One thing to watch for (and again this is probably my naivete) when I rebooted I still wasnt 100% convinced that I was in 3.5.10, the 4.1 theme is still installed as default. however after I noticed the widget dock was gone and the menus were once again sensible that i decided I was ok. now comes the big SYNC experiment (cross your fingers) after this I'm going to see what I can do about the lodak AIO 5500 Theres no offical support from kodak, but it seems to me as though a few "seperate" ideas might combine to make it work. one of these days (about MDV2010) i'm going to get back to working onm the "Roll your own" project! I had 2 weeks at home post surgery and REALLY wanted to devote that to roll your own. unfortunately my 2 year old had OTHER ideas of what dad should be doing during his recuperation! j
  4. Currently MCNL, PENDRIVELINUX and PCLINUXOS all stop at MDV2007.1 I BELIEVE that PCLINUXOS has an updated Kerneal, but that would be the only difference, personally considering how well and stable MCNL is I'd try that before trying to go the 2008 route UNLESS you want to shell out the $$$ and get a 2008.1 8GB flash. That SHOULD boot right up on your EEEPC. J
  5. if you had issues w/ the old 500, replaced it w/ 2 750's yet are still having problems, maybe if you disconnesct the old 500? j
  6. JK thanks, I'll try again tonote. lastnight I figured I'd install gnome (yuk) and then try and add KDE. unfortunately on a 40GB hd I allwed default partitions which gave me a 4GB \ and that overflowed. so i have to do a clean install again anyway. I'll try your method. thanks J
  7. ji, can you tell me how you did it? j
  8. really? now thats strange, i wonder why you'd have to do that in 2009 when in 2008.1 they install side bu side? j
  9. ok i installed 2009 rc1 kde 4.1 installs by default and i dont have an issue with that except that my hand held uses wm2003 which wont work w/ kde4 so i was told to install 3.1.10 and then work from there, again i'm good with that, so i went to MCC installed about 378 kde3.5.10 packages , including the task. and yet when i go to login, its not available from the drop down. unless i have to i dont necessari;y need to ditch kde4 but i do need to know what i missed in reference to installing 3.5 is there a how to or something out there? thanks j [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  10. thats interesting, I tried to install beta 2 last night of 2009 and came up w/ the same 2 errors. since rc1 is out i'll scrap beta2 and try rc1 tonight j
  11. you know I see these statments about "limited write life spans" of SD and usb keys all over the internet, yeat I have been using my MDV FLASH (2gb version) since the 1st week they came out, and have made a dozen of my OWN flsh drives based on MCNL for 2 years and not had a single issue with any of them. I know for a fact that the majority of the usb keys I buy are much lower quality than the flash, so you'd think they'd go 1st, but nope never had a read/write/seek error on any of them. j
  12. All right, I am 99% of the way to getting my wife to switch to linux 100%. there are a few hold outs #1 is the Axim w/ win2002, that I KNOW will have to wait for MDV 2009. HOWEVER next is her Kodak AIO 5500 printer. She LOVES this device. one touch printing, scanning etc. yet the ONLY info I can find about plugging it into a linux box comes from the UBU guys who kind of gave up when kodak said they werent going to do it. But I have a few questions/ideas to toss around. #1 in trying to get my Axim to work I found that there were a LOT of "tools" available for USB that arent talked about too much. Anyone think that those may help in getting this setup w/ MDV? #2 The scanner, according to KODAK is a typical twain scanner. Not having hooked it up yet, but also not having had much luck with SANE, does anyonme have any suggestions on getting that scanner to work w/ SANE? #3 She also has a Samsung ML2010 mono laser printer. Now this printer DOES have a linux driver, BUT its hooked up to a netgear IP printserver. In my past experience I know I could get printers that no longer had direct drivers support to print if i used an HP jetdirect and threw the data to an IP adderss. Anyone think that maybe putting one of THOSE in line would help with getting theis printer to print under MDV? Lasty I have 2009 RC2 on her new laptop, and its working pretty well, but I havent spent a LOT of time with it. I'm considering puting it on her linux desktop just to futz with. Since shes not using it 100% of the time it would give me a chance to work on a lot of the "issues" with switching her to MDV 100%. Anyone see anything in 2009 that makes it worth the start now, or should i just give it 2 MORE months? as always all comments and suggestions appreciated. j
  13. if youre interested in writing a short step by step for draklive in either open office or word, I'd be glad to post it to the Linux portion of my site, along with my Roll Your Own 2007.1 and Verizon 5750 USB Modem: http://www.thehess.org/linux.html Jerome
  14. where did you download your copy of MCNL? this is always your best bet www.mcnlive.org/download.htm
  15. silly question since it appears to be starting this way. but is your bios set to boot from the external HD? j
  16. just for grins have you tried downloading the Mnadriva One disk and verifying that THAT will boot? I'm not familar with you machine, but like you, when i was 1st starting out I reformatted the HD a LOT before I got anything to work, unfortunately as I learned more and more I relaized that i was creating a lot of my own issues. I would verify that the "live" cd version will boot before you toss in the towel. j
  17. I I understand that completely, but to understand the thought process behind what was being done wiould have helped a LOT. j
  18. unfortunately mklivecd is a generic set of util/scripts that ARE used in the remastering process, unfortunately its not as easy as "mklivecd MYSYSTEM" it SHOULD be, but its not sigh j
  19. high you arent the only person working, bookie and i are trying it as well. unfortunately with my job and other responsibilities its not an all day every day chore. i can understand chris retiring due to time constraints i just wish she could have documented her process better so we all could have learned from it. but i do know she was leaning towartds draklive and re writing the existing scripts. PCLOS really caught my attention, but they are stuck on 2007 as well j
  20. yeah it allows me 60gb on my xp (for my office) and 100gb for MDV. then for $9 i bought an external case for the old HD, now I have another 60GB usb drive :)
  21. i think the combination of LIVE mode and 256MB 2GHZ is more than enough CPU, but a "full" installation runs MUCH faster on 512mb+ alternatively you could try the "mini me" version J
  22. thanks for everyones assistance. i decided to use this as an excuse to double the HD size of my laptop. 160gb for $65! woohoo! j
  23. well thats actually a good question. I was pretty sure that I had formatted ext3, but the error is stating ext2
  24. the reference to hda makes me think it could be a bad block on the HD. I'm NO cli expert, but I BELIEVE that if you kill your partitions and re make them, reformat them and then run fsck on them (its like chkdsk in windows) you may be able to map "over " that block. j
  25. I filled the HD on my laptop last night. Then before I sgut down I THOUGHT I had cleared off over 1GB of stuff. So I shut down and upon reboot now, I'm always getting: Checking root file system fsck.ext2: Is a directory while trying to open / :/ The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap of ufs or something else), then the superblocks is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> [failed] ***A error occurred during the filesystem check. ***Dropping you to a shell: the system will reboot ***when you leave the shell Give Root password for maintenence. (or type Control-D to Continue) Nothing I do will allow a clean boot. Now I booted from a USB device and cleared off all the files that had filled it (data files) and now I have 1.7GB free of 12GB. I'm not 100% averse to reinstalling, but if I dont have to, that of course would be better. Nothing I try in e2fsck seems to make a difference. Anyone have any ideas? I apologize ahead for crossposting, but I am going to place this on everal different boards. Thanks again J
