  1. Title says it all. Last fall I upgraded to an X2 5600 (the 6000's were way out of my league), and noticed a HUGE jump when compared to my intel duo 3800. Of course I would LOVE a MB that supports at least 2 quad core processors, you know 2 quad cores each core at 2800, with 64GB of ram (8GB per core) and a few terabytes of storage. BUT short of a lottery win, that wont be THIS year. just wondering if anyone has run MDV on eith an intel or AMD quad and what their experience was? For me, it really does feel like an exponential jump from the intel duo to the amd X2, but then i also went from 1.5GB of ram to 4GB and from PATA to SATA so I'm sure all that helped your experience? 2. well i decided last night that I couldnt wait for the fall. so i backed up my /home, resized my partitions, made \home a seperate partition and did a complete fresh reinstall. some interesting things to note. i've never done the backup home, reinstall trick before so i copied EVERYTHING off to another drive, performed the re install, created one user, logged in as THAT user, and then copied the \home for my main user back. reboot, logged in as the alternate, created the "master" user, reboot and tried to login as the master. git an interesting error about my \tmp files being full. logged back in as the alternate, and lo and behold had an almost 3GB \tmp killed that, rebooted, attempted to log back in, and got a VERY long login process. by the time I left for work it still hadnt finished. now i'm thinking at this point that MAYBE :P i didnt do something 100% correctly. so if anyone has any ideas, I'm open to them!
  3. oy, anyone have any ideas (other than a clean install - which is what its looking like) to remove them?
  4. well if I did I;m not sure how, I deliberately went in and cleared everything out before I started. But that certainly LOOKS like what thye situation is doesnt it? Buteven after changing the repos last night back to the PWP DVD and the "offical" repos for 2008.1, its all still saying 2009 i'm wondering if I should just limp alonmg until 2k9 comes out? I HATE to di it, and am in fact working on backing up everything now for a drive up re install. I just hate THAT idea even more. FYI. I attempted the errata/bug fix (I was one of the 1st guys to get the "upgrade failure) and when I used the replace pkgs command it didnt generate any errors, but didnt seem to do anything else either. then the KDE options errored out, it said that they were already installed? curiouser and curiouser anyone have ANY ideas? anyone know when 2k9 is due out?
  5. now heres a strange one. if youve seen my other thread you know i recently upgraded from 2008 to 2008.1 nd i thought things were going well, then found that only the alternate server kernel selection at boot would load my KDE. now MCC is saying that it thinks that its 2009 cooker anyone have any idea on how i might change its mind? j
  6. I think the prev suggestion is the best one. I have a similar card friom verizon and it cant STAND 2006, 2007.1 i could get it recognized, 2008.1 no problemo. if youre not ready to upgrade trhe laptio, maybe if you boot the livecd and see how IT likes the card? j
  7. AMD seems to rule MDV! :D I too have the X2-4800 4GB ram etc. I have tried the 64bit version, and like some others, when working with image manipulation or sound editing, there is a difference. BUT *now realize this was 2007-64* there didnt seem to be enough of a difference to MAKE that difference because SOME things wouldnt run (adobe etc) so i went back to the 32 bit version and have been very happy ever since. I havent compared 64x32 speeds in 2008.1, but for my use, until i find "the killer apps" in 64 I'll probably stay where Im at. OR maybe when i upgrade to a quad core this summer!
  8. just my 2 cts, but i much rather use my card reader than hot connect my camera. My wife thinks its a pain, but I think that VS the Kodak software (which she loves) it gives you a WHOLE lot more control. I cant TELL you how often she'll tell me she cant find a picture, I'll ask whhere she stored it and she says "wherever the software put it" AAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I gave her a whole 160GB HD just for PIX and she wont narrow it down for me
  9. I THINK whats happening, is that he has 2008 on drive 1 he has 2008.1 on drive 2 He has a file structure that is ALMOST identical on each drive (save a few letter differences in his data folders) and yet when he is in 2008.1 the structure ow 2008 is what he sees. again, thats my attempt at typing the way i read it. I cant say I have ever had THAT issue, but I can say I have seen times where 2 sata drives get "confused" in the same system.
  10. well as promised, I donloaded and burmed PWP 2008.1 last night and did a complete install from scratch (since this is just a test box I didnt try and "save" anything. everything went fine. had MDV reformat/repartition the drives and it was all good. matter of fact it took almost HALF the time that the previous attempt to run it as un upgrade did. but so far everything seems 10% stable and good!.. j
  11. to answer the original question however, the NO ROOT decision was a corporate decision made several versions ago (2007?) by MDV. you here a LOT of negative flak about logging in as root. however there have been times (see my cooker post) where I've had to login as root. but once you get down to using KDESU XXXX it really becomes 2nd nature. j
  12. ok, being the stubborn cuss that I am, and the fact that the PWP dvd version took MUCH longer than I thought it should, I figured I'd retry the upgrade with a NEW re-burn of MDV2008.1FREE. same issue. everything seems to go fine, until almost the VERY end when I get the error: an error occurred UNDEF SUBROUTINE & MDK::COMMON::SYSTEM::UNIQ::CALLED at which point you click ok and it goes back to the "begining of the install" it scans for packages, recalcs the time (quickly) and then errors out again. being stubborn, but not stupid, i have started the install of the 2008.1 PWP with a completely clean reformat the HD style install i'll let you know how that goes. BTW this is a 2200MHZ AMD Semperon 512MB shared ram w/ vid j
  13. as an early seeder (I have about 9 uploads running right now at 16k each), I grabbed the MDV2008.1 FREE DVD last night and tried to upgrade my 2008 PWP. I know , I should have waited another 24 hours and I would have gotten that PWP today! But I didnt. and I was rather taken aback when it said it would take 45 minutes, heck I dont think my ORIGINAL install took that long. Anyway I was at 99% and got the STRANGEST error, it was 1130 so I didnt get it entirely, BUT I do know I got stuck in a perpetual loop, An error would pop up saying it had an invalid symcall and then ask if I had any additional medium, it the (VERY quickly) calculated the time remaining, zipped through the status bar, and errored out again. Clear the error (same one) and your right back where you were! so I thought I'd reboot and tryy again w/ a new DVD burn. When I reboot, it goes to CLI which is how it was set and then I log in as my test user and I get an error saying KDE cant start, no WRITE permissions to /kde.tmp.(?) So I reboot again get to my CLI, log in as root and everything loads fine, WITH 2008.1 Now as I said, it was almost midnight, SO I started another DVD burning, BUT since I'll have the PWP tonite I'll try that one as well. Boy am I glad I started on my test box instead of my real one...... J [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  14. aussie thats awesome thanks for the quick reply woo hoo data galore! thanks j
  15. Hey guys, Anyone used any of those cards that provide MORE SATA ports than you already have? Like this one: http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/product_info....roducts_id=8094 you know $16 and you get 3 more SATA's and a PATA. HOWEVER, I do NOT want to use mine as a RAID controller. I'm a data junky nd I just need some more hard drives. ALSO my currennt MP ECS PM400M7 has both 4 PATA's and 2 SATAS. can this card be used? will I THEN have 5 SATAS and 5 PATAS? that would be perfect. Like back in the REAL SCSI days. You know 3 MFM drives 2 SCSI cards with a max of 7 HD's on each card? You know, the kind of tower that heats your home in the winter? Any and all ideas would be appreciated. J J
  16. well for the 1st one. I honestly sis NOT have any problems at all for the FIRST time w/ 2008 and my broadcom wlan in my notebook. HOWEVER, I have always maintained that www.linuxant.com has the best and most seemless solution you will find PERIOD. Even the $20 if you decide to buy it is WELL worth it as you can use it on any pc w/ any linux that you want now, for virtual box, I havent used it inabout a year (that was 2007.1) but as I recall, it was loaded when i loaded 2008 so all I had to do was set it up. I had a posting in the MCNL area about running MDV from WITHIN windows that was REALLY simple. what you have, it sounds like, is a dual boot pc (windows on 1 side and Linux on the other), whereas what you WANT is to load linux, and then (perhaps)click a selecrtion in linux (like V-box) and launch your windows? does that sum it up? If so, I would work w/ V-box and get your Windows virtual machine up and running, then go intio GRUB and take out the windows entry only AFTER your comfprtable w/ you v-box setup. realize, that as good as v-box is, there are still certain things that require WAY too much configuratuion to get setup (again my 2 cts let me know
  17. and they have a copy of MDV available http://content.zdnet.com/2346-12355_22-174871-1.html i WONDER if this copy would run on my Via C3 processor?
  18. that looks like a slightly different error than before, that one LOOKS like it could still be trying to go to your CDROM. to give a little more detail, there is a special file system, developed just for "live cd's called "squashFS" its a compressed file syste, and it LOOKS like it is still trying to load it from the CDROM, which leads me to a few ideas. #1 reformat the USB in FAT and make sure the partition is active #2 check your BIOS and make sure that it's set to BOOT from your USB. In my LAPTOP, mine shows up under the HARD DRIVE section, in my desktop it shows a seperate listing for USB devices. #3 do we KNOW for sure that this PC is ABLE to boot from the USB Maybe you should TRY to boot from the CDROM, I believe that one of the selections on that menu is to THEN boot from USB. IF that works, at least THEN you know that the USB key is ok. I do remember my original days of working w/ MCNL were harder than I thought they should be, but now it pretty much runs on auto pilot for me. I do have a step by step text file located here http://www.thehess.org/Rollyourown1.html that might help you out. J
  19. since you looked at it under windows I'm assuming you had it FORMATTED FAT? Was that FAT 16 or FAT32? I have ehard from some folks that they have found a difference. Most importantly is the partition set as ACTIVE? that was an issue I had in the begining. last but not least when you booted from the CD were you able to SEE the USB stick from the MCNL that was running>?
  20. a couple of things to tyhink about 1) whats the card formatted in? ntfs? fat 16? fat 32>I'm leaving the linux formats off because you said you could read it from windos. ALSO is this an internal card reader that came w/ your pc, or an external reader. I ask that because I have found that MANY of my "internal" usb ports are USB 1.1 (even on my newer stuff. so even if i hook up a USB 2.0 hub its only going a 1,1apeed. Just a few thought. j
  21. I think the most common solution is the NO ACPI option. You have a pretty current (bleeding edge?) setup there, and Toronto is based on 2007.1. Something else to check. Download the MDV 2008 LIVE cd and see if THAT will boot (it should) without any options. j
  22. hanks for the input, the more i look around the more i think i'll probably just buy another 2496, although i would love it if someone would tell me if 2008 works with it. maybe i'll burn a live cd and see what happens. as far as the latencey goes, it really is more of a learning thing than an actual recording thing. i might do SOME mixing on it, but honestly my music pc sits 15 feet away on the other side of my office, surrounded by all my synths. this setup would be to see if it works, how well, and for occasional use. besides, Wine is cranking pretty well on my AMD X2 4800+ w/ 4GB of ram. I think the USB thought was just because they are "newer and slicker" but I too have had issues with them working properly right out of the boc on MDV
  23. hey guys. I just found out from the FL forums (and yes I'll pos there too) that with WINE I can run FL Studio under mandriva. however the box that I use as my main pc, uses the built in sound card, which has no midid and would stink for recording anyway. I bought an M-Audio 2496 for my 2007 version, but couldnt ever get it recognized, so I stuck it in my windows pc and everything works fione. so now I'm looking for something to run in my MDV box and am wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for a mdv2008 setup? The 2496 was only $100 and I'd love to stay in that range (especially since this is a like to not a have to), but then i wonder about the USB external interfaces like M-Audio's Fast Track USB. anyone tried one of these in Mandriva? has MDV fixed whatever the issue w/ the 2496 was (folks said I SHOULD have had NO issues with it, but after 6 months I gave up. any and all ideas appreciated. thanks J
  24. i have tried everu major and LOTS of minor distros out there, even "paid" fr some and yet i keep coming back to MDV. UBU is too gnomey for me xandros is great to integrate into a windows network, but too much proprietary stuff fedora is trying too hard NOT to be rles and SUSE is for me the only serious contender out there just m,y 2 cts
  25. yes that screenshot is my work desktop, why are so many people awed at the amount of icons i have? ok before things get TOO hectic here's the deal. i loved mcnl i actually adapted the idea to my 2007.1 desktop to the point that anytime my desktop got corrupted (which was LOT) all i had to do was pop my DVD in the drive, reboot and EVERYTHING including my applications were reinstalled. unfortunately i havent been able to get 2008 to work. i know that some other are working on it, rumor has it that "charles" made it work, but unfortunately all his links at mandrivaclub.nl are either gone or in french, and bablefish doesnt do THAT good of a job. so while i search answers on the bosses nickel occasionally i come across some cool stiff that i think might help sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt, but is still cool. this is one of those things. from: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/09/19/po...-pendrivelinux/ they talk about running "pendrive linux" from your windows desktop without having to reboot, and while everything else is running alongside it. so i wanted to find out if we could use their methods to do the same thing with MCNL. 1. Download QemuPDLv1.1.0.exe and run the executable. (Extract to a folder named QemuPDL) - you can actually put it in any folder you want Here is the actual download link: http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading...mirror=internap 2. This download actually includes the MCNL ISO in it, its called Etch-PDL.iso 3. Copy your MCNL.ISO, whatever version you want, to the folder that you created 4. Now you can probably change the script to call whatever the ISO is actually called, but remember this is the lazy way to do it 5. Rename the Etch-PDL.ISO to Etch-PDLa.ISO, and then rename YOUR MCNL.ISO to Etch-PDL.iso 6. Navigate to the QemuPDL folder ( or whatever the folder is called) and click the LaunchPDL.bat file to start running MCNL from Windows I havent tried all the options, but a straight boot works fine! Please remember that if you ARE doing this at work you are STILL under whatever corporate firewall rules that your XP machine is under. So for example in my case I can get to the repositories (easy-urpmi) but updating the packages sometimes is iffy. anyway, thats the lazy mans magic. This can PROBABLY be used to run any liveCD that you want, matter of fact, i'm sure, someone with more scripting skills than me could probably have the script ASK for the name of the ISO file, so you wouldnt have to rename ANYTHING. AND anyone who wants to help direct me down the path of getting a 2008 version of MCNL it would be greatly appreciated. i'm starting to use some of squashfs tools and draklive is probably whats replaced mklivecd, so anyone with some smarts or more time your help would be allreciated.
