Favorite distro so far is Mandrake. I started out with 8.1 and found it a bit too challenging for me so I read everything I could get my hands on and came back for 9.1, and was very impressed with it's ease of use and how polished it is. I've tried just about every version of Red Hat since 7.3 but always go back to Mandrake. Now that I've used it a while though I'm starting to feel that it's a little too newbieish and need more of a challenge unfortunately my harddrive is not big enough for an additional distro on it. I am also less than thrilled with how Mandrake is with upgrading, I'd rather not have to do a fresh install everytime a new version comes out. I'm leaning towards Debian for my next distro. I keep putting it of though because Debian frightens me :wink: .

I ended up just reinstalling so it's fixed now. When I was going through the reinstallation and it got to the partitioning part I discovered that my home partition was labeled as a swap and the second windows (fat32) partition was labeled as home. So it seems I was a little quick to reinstall since this probably could have been fixed :x I just couldn't stand having to stay in Windows any longer. Thank you for the help anyway

I'm going to go ahead and reinstall. Good thing I made a backup. Thanks for the help. It's good to know that this has happened to someone else.

OK, where to start.......this could be a long post. I had a dual boot of Windows ME and Mandrake 9.1 for a couple of weeks now just because there were a couple progs I was missing out on but Win ME was crashing all the time so I decided to do a clean install on one of my windows partitions (I have two) and install WindowsXP (I bought it before I saw the light :wink: ). So everything went fine in the install I had it just format the one partition to NTFS (leaving the Linux partitions and the fat32 one alone) and install on it. No problems except that I had to reinstall the Mandrake bootloader no big deal I knew how to fix that (putting Mandrake disc one in and reboot...hit F1...rescue...and reinstall bootloader to MBR) that went fine as well, no errors that I could see. Windows boots fine but when I try to boot into Linux (even when I use the boot floppy) I get this as it boots up: So I hit Y and it says I typed in my root password but I didn't know what to do next (there wasn't anymore prompting just a number and the blinking cursor after it)So I hit Ctrl D and reboot into Windows to post this. I hope this can be fixed I'd rather not have to reinstall but I have the next four days off so I have the time. I'm not sure if this problen was caused by Windows or reinstalling the boot loader or possibly neither. Thank you very much in advance as this problem boggles my mind.

I also agree with Chris, the people on this board are the nicest most helpful people. I've only actually posted one question here but it was answered really well, and quickly. I also like that this board doesn't get itself so bogged down with topics that just provoke fights like I've seen on another Linux board such as politic bashing and women in the tech industry. The faq section has been invaluable to me and to the few people I've told about it on other boards.

I'm sure you're right but is it at all possible that that this company could go on and sue other browser makers. The whole patent business seems awfully flawed. I'm as happy as the next person to see Microsoft finally get some payback but doesn't this set a bad precedent for other companies. Just wondering.

Thank You so much! It worked. I raised the print density to 1.75 and lowered the gamma value a smidge. Hopefully it's alright that I did both. I had been leery to mess with the numbers much before but now I know what to do in the future to adjust printing. :D

One little problem I have had is everything I print is sort of washed out looking. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it? On this same printer in Windows everything looked nice and bright, if that helps. I have a Canon S300. I have tried using different drivers and I have tried changing the settings. Right now I have it set to high quality printing and set at 600X600. Everything else is working great so I could live with this if I had to, I just would rather not. Thank You in advance.

I was thinking Madison or Milwaukee. I know Madison has at least one but I don't drive. I've tried preaching the virtues of Linux to lots of people but mostly they just laugh and change the subject, I think I need new friends.

To upgrade all you have to do is get out of X and in the console type nvidia-installer --update It will then download the new version, uninstall the old one, and install the new one automatically. Possibly not in that order though.

If there were a lug in my city(Green Bay) I would love to go but sadly the closest one is about 2 hours away. I can't even seem to find anyone in the whole city that uses Linux, not that I know everyone. Oh well.
