  1. 1.5 will work fine on Mandrake 10.1 and the one on the website is super easy to install.

    Mplayer

To find it you might want to either do what I do and open a terminal window and type "slocate mplayer" (without the quotes of course), if you do it this way you might want to "su" and "updatedb" to update the database first. Or graphically open the menu - system - file tools - find files it will automatically want to look in your home so just point it to root instead (/) and it will tell you where anything on your system with the word mplayer is.
  3. It depends on how you installed it, with an rpm or with the tar.gz if it's the latter then you'll find it in the folder that untarred, it will just say firefox. If it's the former (the rpm) then it's in usr/bin

The easy way to make a desktop icon is to right click on the desktop - create new - link to application and the rest is pretty easy. You'll find the executable (I hope that's the right word) in /usr/bin that's where most if not all the executables are. That's where mine are anyway.
  5. Well, I just pre-ordered the latest Mepis (3.3) and I should get it next week sometime. Then I read everything in the knowledge base on the Mepis site as well as the Mepis Lovers forum and printed everything I thought I should need. I still need to read more about apt but other than that I am ready. So thank you everyone for the help and advice.
  6. I totally agree with you about the upgrades. I had just always assumed it was the same way with all the distros. Now I don't know if this is just a Mandrake thing or what but everytime I update my software (urpmi --auto-select) something breaks or works funny. I think I'll download Mepis overnight and install it tomorrow and see how I like it and install Ubuntu next.
  7. Thank you. I still have to do some more reading on how to do this with regard to the boot loader etc. but then I'm going to try both Mepis and Ubuntu (one at a time). I still have to either download Mepis or buy the disk which I have been putting off because although I have DSL it is pretty slow, 384k. I had thought that I might try Libranet but I'm just not patient enough to wait for 3.0. I really do like Mandrake but I just need a new challenge.
  8. Working with what internet services to allow in Guarddog shouldn't have caused that problem ,and perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm not sure that they are related. You were only working in Guarddog right, not the Mandrake Control Center? I'm sorry but I'm not sure I'll be able to help you with that part but I'm sure someone else will pretty quickly. This board is amazing for knowledgable people. As a side note right now you are probably feeling in over your head but Linux only seems like that at first soon it becomes very fun and a bit addictive and you'll learn really fast. That may seem like an odd thing to say but I wish someone had told me that at first when I was learning and having problems.
  9. Thank you so much for telling me. I had really wanted to try Libranet but 2.8 is at least a year old so I will definitely wait for 3.0. I can't wait, I'll have to go to the site and find out more and maybe preorder or something. I don't think i will ever stop using Mandrake since I really do like it but I am craving a new challenge.
  10. You're not a nuissance I am just so glad I could help someone. Now for your question I would look around, what I did was clicked around on the different tabs just to learn it, but you can generally keep with the defaults. Also to make sure I didn't lead you astray you should go to one of the sites that scan your ports to see how good your firewall protection is, if you haven't already. This one is my favorite http://www.grc.com/default.htm and it's called Shields Up.
  11. Yes, that message is perfectly normal. Now as far as setting it up the internet zone will be highlighted and that's what I configure, Click on the protocol tab and place a check (by clicking in the box) of everything you want allowed, I allow nothing under Chat, nothing under Data Serve, under File Transfer I allow FTP, HTTP, and HTTPS. Then nothing untill I get to Mail where I allow POP3 and SMTP..........by now you're getting the hang of it I'm sure........then I allow DNS which is under Network So that's just me you'll have to go through and see what programs you use that need the internet that I don't (file sharing perhaps). Then that's it. Post back if you have any other problems. Oh I should tell you I have to launch Guarddog everytime I boot the computer I'm sure there's a reason and I could fix it but I don't. You probably won't have that problem but just in case.
  12. Actually I'm in Green Bay just a few hours north of Madison. And you make a very good point about TiVo's, PDA's, XBOX's etc I hadn't thought about that. So perhaps my idea is a bit harsh and anyway who wants to be forced to go to school to do something they thought would be fun.
  13. I use Guarddog and love it, it's very easy to use and requires no monitoring. I'm not sure what firewall you are using now so I don't know if you will need to uninstall it but this just works as a graphical frontend for iptables. So all you do is download the rpm from here http://www.simonzone.com/software/guarddog/#download install the rpm and then start Guarddog up as root (I usually just open up konsole and su to launch things as root) to configure. By default it blocks everything so just go though and allow only what you need hit apply OK and close. I don't want to insult you by giving you too much info so just post back if you have more questions. I'm happy to help.
  14. I am all about choice and freedom but I sometimes think it should require a licience to operate a computer just like with a car. At the very least a one session class. This may sound harsh but the reason I say that is some people get on their computer (Windows of course) with inadequate or no virus protection and then act as a virus server. I was only online for about 5 minutes in Windows updating my virus definitions after my DSL got installed and I get hit with a virus which I still haven't been able to completely remove. So in closing I think everyone should be allowed to use a computer but they should be required to take a class to learn about responsible use.
  15. I am so glad, I was feeling a little guilty for having them send me a disk for free. Well after doing some more reading Libranet is out since it doesn't seem like new releases are coming out very often. Then again maybe I am just spoiled by Mandrake. I am going to try both Ubuntu and Mepis and see which one I like best. I will post back to let you all know what I thought if you want.
  16. She actually ;) I think I am going to try all the good possibilities. I have a Ubuntu cd on the way in the mail and I'll download or order from cheap bytes Mepis and Libranet. I really like the theory behind Ubuntu I only hope they don't go out of business for lack of money. Thank you all for your help especially for the links as I had no idea where to look for information other than google and distro watch.
  17. To be honest I have no idea just something fun to try. Challenging but not so much that I pull my hair out. The biggest thing is I want something that wouldn't be too difficult to keep up to date with the very latest software. I've also been thinking though that I really like KDE way better than Gnome. Not that it matters since I could just apt-get it. The most important thing is good documentation.
  18. So you see my problem then. I have too much to choose from and my knowledge is about a year out of date. I'm getting up to speed slowly but surely though.
  19. Thank you all for the advice and especially the links. Simply Mepis is sounding good so far but I have some more reading to do on that. I also ordered a Ubuntu cd but I have to do a lot of reading on that too. I feel so out of the loop with these distos I've never heard of before. They sound great though. Actually I had to make some sacrifices which included phone and internet. I had a cell phone through work though so it could have been worse. But I have a roomate now so the expenses are more affordable. It's weird how much I have forgotten and have to reread and relearn but to me the learning was always part of the fun.
  20. Well, I was away from my computer and the internet (other than checking e-mail at the Library) for about a year and now I am back. I have been back for about a week but it took some time to get caught up and updated. So to get to the point I have fully converted my roommate to Linux and we are ready to get rid of Windows which is taking up a 10+ gig partition. My question is does anyone have some good ideas on a new distro to try? Since I have been away from the world of Linux so long I have no idea what's new/good. I would like something fairly user friendly but that's not that important as long as the documentation is good. Also I would like something .deb based. I will probably not get rid of Mandrake this will just be something fun to mess with. Thank you in advance. Oh by the way I apologize if this is in the wrong section, it seemed the best but I wasn't certain.
  21. Thank You for all the responses. Sorry it took so long for me to write back but evidently my thread got renamed, I'm not complaining though it's a much better title. I think I'm going to hold of and read a lot more before getting rid of windows and trying out another Linux distro. I don't mind losing windows but I'm still a little nervous about this whole process of running dual distros. The running it seems pretty easy and straightforward in how different distros run (uids home partition etc.) but after my last encounter with installing multiple distros/systems http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...wtopic=7560&hl= I'm a little nervous. My other problem is I have Mandrake 9.2 and it won't let me make a boot floppy from MCC so I need to look for a fix/work around for that first. Thank you again for all the info and links it gives me some good stuff to read.
  22. I have a 11 gb NTFS partition with WinXP on it and a 2.8 gb fat32 partition that I was using to share between WinXP and Mandrake but I am thinking of getting rid of Windows and trying out some different distros, namely Debian. My last holdouts were good replacements for my current bible software and Microsoft Money but I've been using Bibletime 1.3 and Gnucash so I really don't need Windows. The question(s) I have is there anything special I should know to do? Can they share a home partition and if so how? Is it possible to install one distro on the 2.8 gb partition and another one on the 11 gb one? Will the NTFS formatted partition pose a problem? There's probably a lot more I should know but this is all I can think of. I have only been back using Linux for about 6 months now and I still don't know all the places to go for good information on things like this so if you could post some links or tell me where to go to find out more I'd really appreciate it. Thank you very much in advance, Heather
  23. Thank you that's really helpful. I'll just use upmi next time then.
  24. Thank you, and yes it was through Mandrake update that I tried updating my kernel how did you know. I never did figure out the right way or why it went awry but with a new Mandrake version every 6 months I don't think I'll need to do it.
  25. I've installed the download edition of 9.2 and discovered it did not come with the kernel source so after much searching I found it and downloaded it in rpm format. My question is are there any special steps I need to take when installing it like things to edit etc.? The reason I ask is I don't want to repeat the previous mistake I made when I upgraded my kernel on 9.1 and found I couldn't get back in. Thank you in advance
