  1. Well I don't think I have ever posted a screen shot of my desktop before so hopefully I'm doing it right. It's nothing too fancy but I really like it.
  2. Unfortunately I don't have a spare computer or spare money for that matter. The city I live in seems to be having a job shortage right now. But I looked at that site and with very little effort I found this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16827152047 that's much less that half of what I was expecting to pay. Had I bought one when I was going to a couple of months ago I would have paid around $130. Thank you for pointing out that great site. I think I may need to put this off for a while at least until I have some money to do it right.
  3. I hope I am understanding this correctly but gdm is the not Gnome itself basically it makes Gnome (or KDE if you chose that) run. So if you want Gnome, which is on the disks (can be gotten via urpmi or MCC), what you want is Gnome2. Hope that helped and didn't confuse things even more.
  4. Your idea about using hdb for something like /mydata is great so I think that is what I'm going to do. This way I can put my music and videos and such on that drive and everything else on the nice fast one. It just sounds like the safer option. The only thing, and maybe this sounds ridiculous but I'm a little nervous about getting rid of Windows completely. I never use it but I always know it's there...just in case. Oh well, it's using precious hard drive space and it doesn't deserve the faster drive so it's out of there. Now I just have to figure out a way to save all my data which includes 4 1/2 GB music and 7.5GB of videos (episodes of a show I like courtesy of Bittorrent) without using a billion CDRs. I should have gotten the DVD-RW drive when I had the chance. I apologize if I should have started another thread for this but what do other people do who have a lot of data to transfer but not a lot to transfer it with in a circumstance like this? And also thank you guys for answering my many questions.
  5. So, either way this will work whether or not they are on the same IDE bus channel? What I had initially planned to do is put / and swap on hda and /home on hdb but now I'm starting to wonder if I may get better performance with a more complex partitioning scheme. Also as a side note, my sister is now using Linux full-time with no complaints. What happened was I told her that she could use Windows or Linux, whatever she was more comfortable with. But I set her up with a user acct in Linux, copied all her Firefox and Thunderbird stuff and basically made it really easy for her to use Linux. Also since I already had Crossover Office she can continue to use Microsoft Office. Well she hasn't booted over to Windows yet and is even liking the games (Patience, Supertux etc.).
  6. Thank you. I didn't realize it would be so easy. I just assumed there would be a problem because the drives are of different speeds.
  7. What I'm wondering is I have 2 hard drives installed right now: hda - Windows, NTFS, 40GB, 7200RPM, IDE hdb - Linux, 5400RPM, IDE and I want more space for Linux so I wonder if I can format the drives and install Linux over both drives like maybe put /home on hdb and everything else on hda. The only thing is then I may have to put up with an unhappy roomate/sister who likes using Windows and cannot not be easily convinced that Linux is better and in some ways easier. So my other option is having Windows on only 15 or 20GB of hda and giving Linux (only one distro, PCLinuxOS) the rest of hda and all of hdb. Is either scenario possible? I should probably note that the computer is mine and I spend the majority of the time on it. Thank you
  8. oops, someone was much faster than me.
  9. Yes, you have to set up your sources since they will have more up to date software. Using Mandrake you will almost never have to install anything the hard way (tar.gz) unless you want to when you get more experience. Give me a minute and I will post a step by step to set up your sources.
  10. First I will tell you that everyone has a hard time at first but it gets easier and you will learn so much and you have all of us for support. Second if I remember right you use Mandrake right? So, you won't have to install the tarball for Evolution thank God since it's on the disks and you can upmi to get it. The instructions on how to urpmi is now on this https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=26768&hl= post (I saw that one before this one) also the problem you were having above is you need to su (be root) before you can install anything. All of this will be old hat to you before you know it.
  11. For question #1 Kmail does have the option so, click on: settings -> configure Kmail -> Accounts -> and click on your acct. -> modify -> and about 3/4 of the way down is the check interval time and set it. Also you probably want to make sure "enable system tray" is checked under appearance -> system tray tab so that way it will always be running and will notify you when you have mail (it doesn't take up much resources). You might want to play with the "Configure Notifications" settings you will be amazed by all the options Linux apps give you verses Windows. Regarding urpmi just open a command window Konsole for example -> su to become root -> type in your root password -> and lets say I want the latest firefox I type in urpmi mozilla-firefox -> hit enter and it does everything for you providing you set up your sources.
  12. OK, I found some tutorials for urpmi/installing software. 1 or more is a couple years old but still really usefull this first one may be all you need since it's incredibly well done from what I saw and recent http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/an...ticle&artid=485 http://www.zebulon.org.uk/ICML0.HTML http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/walter/geek/rpm-howto.html Also it would benefit you greatly to read the FAQs available on this board. They are probably what helped me the most when I was learning. https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showforum=29
  13. You really don't need anti-virus with Linux but if you really want it Clamav is a good one, you might need Klamav instead though since that has a GUI. For a firewall I like Firestarter or Guarddog equally. For cd/dvd burning K3b wins hands down. If you haven't already you should use Easy-Urpmi http://www.mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php and set up your sources to make downloading software easy and painless. If anything I just said is confusing or you have further questions I'd be happy to help. It's hard to know initially how much knowledge a person has.
  14. Well , I decided to ignore my conscience for the time being and use Limewire. I download so few songs anyway so the web based options for the most part won't work after all. I found one, eMusic, that charges $9.99 per month for 40 mp3 downloads and there is no way that would be financially prudent for me since I don't even download half that much. I also discovered that itunes runs pretty well, slow but well, in Crossover Office which I already owned. So I'm am probably going to use that as well once I figure out how to convert the songs to mp3's from within Linux (there's a good piece of software for Windows but I don't want to boot over) . So.....my advice for anyone in the same predicament: If you're not intimidated by installing difficult software, unlike me, try SharpMusique since it seems to be a great program. If the 1st solution does not apply to you but you still want to download with itunes then do what I did and install Crossover Office (I needed it for other things anyway) and use itunes from there At this point none of the web based services are a very viable option for the Linux user who who needs per songs charges and up to date mainstream music. If you're not bothered by the legality of it then use any number of free software options available for our favorite operating system like Limewire, GTK Gnutella, PySoulSeek/Soulseek, too many others to name. OK now that this is solved does anyone know I go about changing the title to include the word solved like I've seen on other threads? Thank you for the help and for reading this incredibly long winded post.
  15. I had thought that it could be a good replacement but then I downloaded it. Unfortunately it has no readme or documentation of any kind and it doesn't install the usual way . After searching this is all I could find: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/sh...831#post1714831 Thanks for the tip though, it was a good idea. There just has to be something legal and not so headache inducing. I almost wonder if I should just stick with Limewire. Well, after posting this I am going to go in search of web based solutions. I'll post my results that way if someone else is having the same problem I can save them some work.
  16. I have a dual boot system but at this point only my roomate uses the Windows drive and I'm not really missing Windows except for one thing. I got to really like using itunes. I have found a replacement to play the mp3's (Juk) but still haven't found a replacement for the music store part. I currently use Limewire but, and this is no judgment against anyone else, I feel guilty downloading music from there since I'm a little unsure about the legality of it. Also the quality isn't that great even though I try to get the highest bitrate possible. So, my question is what do other people use? I've heard of other subscription type of services only they're web based has anyone tried any? If so do you have a recommendation? Thank you [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  17. Well usually I leave it running in the system tray so it's running when I start up but I tried what you said and closed it properly before restarting and when the OS started back up I went and opened Juk only to find the same problem. The columns were back to being squished together. Maybe it's just a bug if so I can wait for it to be fixed. It really isn't bothering me that much but I figured maybe I'd try and get some feedback just in case. Thank you for your help.
  18. I am using Juk as my mp3 player and really loving it except for one thing everytime I restart my computer, which is frequent since my roomate insists on using the Windows partition, I have to manually rearrange my column widths since when Juk starts up the columns (Track name, Artist, Album, etc) are all squished together. So my question is how can I make it remember the way I want it, the layout, to look? I Googled this and it looks like KDE fixed this bug in 2004 but I could have read it wrong or misunderstood. Let me know if I should clarify anything. Thanks.
  19. Sorry, I just reread your post and it appears you already tried what I said above so I Googled the problem and here is another answer quoted from another message board: "do this: open your shell and type: gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command -t string 'firefox %s' and gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/command -t string 'firefox %s' This will set firefox as default browser for evolution (in a non Gnome DE). Im using another linux so please be sure to check what your firefox link is. Of course you can use this link to any browser you wish." Hope this helps Also here are a couple of links: http://www.linuxcompatible.org/Using_Evolu...ser_t31948.html http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141214
  20. You actually have to set the preferences in gnome but this can be done from kde. Just open up the Konsole and type in gnome-control-center (I believe that's still the command) there you can set up the behavior/preferences of GTK apps of which Evolution is one.
  21. I agree with what scarecrow said earlier about PCLinuxOS being great for new people. Untill I tried it I kept going back and forth between Windows and Linux but with PCLinuxOS I haven't had to boot over for about a week so far. It uses apt/synaptic which I love and the support is great. I mean, with how many distros can you easily ask questions to the person who created the distro. Also they have said that PCLinuxOS will always be a desktop focused distro and newbie friendly.
  22. That's a problem people were talking about on another board I frequent, PCLinuxOnline, and someone wrote a shell script to fix the problem. I just e-mailed the person few minutes ago to e-mail it to me so either I can e-mail it to you or you can follow this link and e-mail helios for it. http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?m...a8c802b58c847ed hopefully this helps
  23. Something different. It won't load my library's website, which worked before I upgraded Firefox and works in Windows. Here is the link http://www.ipac.library.co.brown.wi.us:738...sp?profile=dial Or you can use this one and click on the library card in the upper left hand corner http://www.co.brown.wi.us/Library/ I just went back and double checked this morning and there are symlinks from /usr/java/jre1.5.0_03/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so to Mozilla plugins, Firefox plugins and Netscape plugins. I just can't imagine what else to try. Thank you
  24. That's the the one I have, 1.5.0_03. I just downloaded it today before doing all of the steps.
  25. I am having a problem that is making me crazy I am using: Mandriva (10.2), Firefox 1.0.4, and jre1.5.0_03 The problem is I can't get java pages to open properly in my browser. I uninstalled jre1.4.? and made sure any symlinks were gone and installed jre1.5.0_03 from Java.Sun's website and everything installed fine. I created the symlinks from /usr/java/jre1.5.0_03/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so to both my Firefox plugins directory and my Netscape directory and double checked that the symlinks showed up........they did. I then double checked in Firefox preferences to make sure anything java related was enabled. Then because it still wasn't working I opened the about:plugins page in firefox to check that everything was installed and enabled and it is. Also I should say when I first installed Mandriva, yesterday, it was working great but then I had to go and upgrade Firefox from 1.0.2 to 1.0.4. I searched the site before asking but they all say the same thing about creating a symlink and that everything will work fine. I must have missed or forgotten something so any help is VERY much appreciated.
