  1. Also, I forgot to mention that Quicken (most versions) can be run from Linux using Crossover Office http://www.codeweavers.com/ if you find that you simply like Quicken better than the Linux alternatives.
  2. I wish Fluffy was mine. He is the cutest dog I've ever seen. I discovered this picture while looking around at blogs and someone had found it on the internet and wanted to share it. You can get it from here http://thisisfluffy.ytmnd.com/ This is what you get when you google Fluffy apparently he is popular http://www.google.com/search?q=%22This+is+...n-US:unofficial
  3. My latest screenshot which includes my favorite picture that I am using for a wallpaper.
  4. You should check out KMyMoney. It has matured so much and I really find it useful. I use it as a replacement for Microsoft Money.
  5. I would like to thank everyone who tried to help me. I ended up just creating a new user account for myself and moving over most of the stuff and settings and running: chown -R myself:myself /home/myself/ It worked like a dream. I would have just deleted the .mozilla but lots of other things were having problems so........this seemed like the best option.
  6. I tried that first: [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ firefox -profilemanager bash: firefox: command not found [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ mozilla-firefox -profilemanager (Gecko:4790): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0.4/run-mozilla.sh: line 451: 4790 Segmentation fault "$prog" ${1+"$@"} but it said command not found so I tried mozilla-firefox instead.
  7. I can open it if I am in my roommates acct. and I su heather and open it that way so I didn't think it was the profile and also I am having crashing problems with Thunderbird as well. But I tried mozilla-firefox -profile manager and got this: [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ firefox -profilemanager bash: firefox: command not found [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ mozilla-firefox -profilemanager (Gecko:4790): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0.4/run-mozilla.sh: line 451: 4790 Segmentation fault "$prog" ${1+"$@"} I even tried reinstalling since I had .9 instead of .91(PCLinuxOS) but that didn't help either. I am going insane trying to figure this out Oh, I should add that I know it is 1.0.4 but I just reinstalled and haven't gotten to get my updates yet and this happened with 1.0.7 before I reinstalled.
  8. Update: It seems that Thunderbird is crashing now too. At least it opens though it crashes if I try and do anything.
  9. I just got some updates and now I can't seem to get Firefox to open. It works fine from another user account just not mine. I tried to launch it from a terminal and this is what I get (sorry it's so long) (gnome-font-properties:6942): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter)'. (Details: serial 2017 error_code 4 request_code 55 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) It looks like a Gnome problem so I opened up gnome-control-center and tried changing the theme/icons but nothing helped. I also looked into the Fonts but everything looked good. I also tried deleting the .metacity folder but that didn't help either. This is making me crazy so thanks for your help.
  10. Where I always buy my discs is cheapbytes http://www.cheapbytes.com/ it is very reliable and they ship it so fast I got it 2 days later.
  11. I agree. I really wanted to like it for those very reasons but maybe it'll get better. I am going to keep checking on it and trying it.
  12. I have used 2.2.8 but found that I just didn't like it as much as openoffice because it just didn't seem to work with .doc as well. Maybe it's better with 2.2.9 but I don't know.
  13. Or, as someone reminded me the other day, you could go into the programs menu and drag the shortcut onto the desktop. It should be under multimedia -> video or someplace like that. I'm using PCLinuxOS so the menus are somewhat different but not too much.
  14. I don't know what genre they are but I like Gnome Mahjongg, Gnometris, Frozen Bubble, Patience (a card game), Supertux, xBill, Tuxkart, and of course Penguin Racer. So mostly arcade with some others thrown in.
  15. I like KMail so I use that. It's simple, has all the features I need and was really easy to set up with f-prot and spamassasin. I especially like that it can run in the taskbar all the time and notify me when I have new mail. My needs are pretty basic.
  16. you can make one it's easy just right click on the desktop -> create new -> link to application -> Type in the name of the application and click on the icon button to the left of it to create the icon then click on application tab and where it says command type in the location of the executable usually it's usr/bin/nameofapplication all lowercase then click ok and you're done.
  17. PCLinuxOS Wiki www.pclinuxonline.com/wiki/HomePage - see original post for updated link.
  18. Sorry I can't be of more help but I Googled your problem and this is what I came up with so far: http://www.google.com/search?q=Linux+keeps...=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/347032 http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/topic-27930-48.html I'll keep checking and see if I can't come up with some better advice.
  19. Thanks for trying but that didn't work either.
  20. Thank you for your help but I think I will just uninstall mplayer and keep using xine/kaffeine. I don't really need that much choice after all, I'll just stick with what's been working so far.
  21. I did what you said and took the quotes out of the ao=arts and then I did mplayer -ao help and arts is listed so I tried: [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ mplayer -ao arts /home/heather/videos/Veronica.Mars/veronica.mars.112.hdtv-lol.avi MPlayer 1.0pre7-3.3.1 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team CPU: Advanced Micro Devices Duron Spitfire (Family: 6, Stepping: 1) Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0 Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 3DNow 3DNowEx SSE SSE2 85 audio & 196 video codecs Linux RTC init error in ioctl (rtc_irqp_set 1024): Permission denied Try adding "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to your system startup scripts. 22. I am confused about something and could use some help. When I try to open Mplayer crashes/closes right away. Just in case you need to know I have the mplayer-gui, mplayerplugin, and mplayerskins. When I tried to open it from the console this is what I get [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ mplayer MPlayer 1.0pre7-3.3.1 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team CPU: Advanced Micro Devices Duron Spitfire (Family: 6, Stepping: 1) Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0 Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 3DNow 3DNowEx SSE SSE2 Warning unknown option "ao at line 2 85 audio & 196 video codecs Usage: mplayer [options] [url|path/]filename Basic options: (complete list in the man page) -vo <drv[:dev]> select video output driver & device ('-vo help' for a list) -ao <drv[:dev]> select audio output driver & device ('-ao help' for a list) vcd://<trackno> play (S)VCD (Super Video CD) track (raw device, no mount) dvd://<titleno> play DVD title from device instead of plain file -alang/-slang select DVD audio/subtitle language (by 2-char country code) -ss <timepos> seek to given (seconds or hh:mm:ss) position -nosound do not play sound -fs fullscreen playback (or -vm, -zoom, details in the man page) -x <x> -y <y> set display resolution (for use with -vm or -zoom) -sub <file> specify subtitle file to use (also see -subfps, -subdelay) -playlist <file> specify playlist file -vid x -aid y select video (x) and audio (y) stream to play -fps x -srate y change video (x fps) and audio (y Hz) rate -pp <quality> enable postprocessing filter (details in the man page) -framedrop enable frame dropping (for slow machines) Basic keys: (complete list in the man page, also check input.conf) <- or -> seek backward/forward 10 seconds up or down seek backward/forward 1 minute pgup or pgdown seek backward/forward 10 minutes < or > step backward/forward in playlist p or SPACE pause movie (press any key to continue) q or ESC stop playing and quit program + or - adjust audio delay by +/- 0.1 second o cycle OSD mode: none / seekbar / seekbar + timer * or / increase or decrease PCM volume z or x adjust subtitle delay by +/- 0.1 second r or t adjust subtitle position up/down, also see -vf expand * * * SEE THE MAN PAGE FOR DETAILS, FURTHER (ADVANCED) OPTIONS AND KEYS * * * So, I looked over the message and saw Warning unknown option "ao at line 2 . I looked in /home/heather/.mplayer/config and saw nothing out of the ordinary. # Write your default config options here! "ao=arts" But just in case, I deleted the "ao=arts" , saved and tried again but still wouldn't open and still got the same message so I added it back. I tried Googling it and got nothing. I tried searching on the board and it seemed one person had that problem but if it was solved the solution wasn't posted. So, you can see I did my homework. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.
  23. I think I will change my desktop each month. This month I have decided that it is far too hot outside and I need wallpaper to help me think cool thoughts.
  24. I ended up just reinstalling after it occured to me that reinstalling is probably less complicated and anyway I have plenty of time.
  25. I apologize in advance but I had no idea where to put this topic. OK This is my problem. I had a dual boot system with Windows on hda and Linux on hdb but hdb is the slower hard drive and it has been freezing so I decided to get rid of Windows and install Linux on hda and use hdb as an extra drive for backups and such. Nothing that would tax it too much. Well everything went well. I manually set up my partitions (because I don't like how small Mandriva makes root by default) so it is as follows hda1 = root 9.2gb hda5 = swap 1gb hda6 = home 28gb (apx.) So I transferred all the data and settings from the old drive to the new and it went wonderfully until I did something VERY stupid. I replaced my /etc on my new setup with the one from the old setup. So now it keeps wanting to boot to hdb because that is what it used to do. I know now why that was dumb but how do I fix it without having to reinstall? Thank you for reading all of this. Please help Thank you in advance. [moved from Terminal Shell Commands, etc by spinynorman]
