  1. The one thing that you forgot to point out, also, is that Mandrake writes some of it's config files in different directories than where the HowTo's, {mostly Red Hat} indicate and the Mandrake Help files don't reflect this, either. They seem to be somewhat sparse and have the attitude of use the Wizard or nothing. I realize that the main target users of Mandrake, for the most part, are used to that but to omit the changes and where to find the files and/or manually make the configs is something of an oversight; in my ignorant opinion that is. I may be totally off base but that's the biggest hassles that I've found so far.
  2. I agree wholeheartedly. And don't think I haven't tried either. I only found where the 'On" switch was on these things a little over 3 years ago but I'd like to have a little of the understanding that my sysadmin buddy does. He understands code naturally.
  3. Just for grins category, too. Got it working!!! Configured, reconfigured, cussed, fussed etc. But it's up and working. I had been using MCC and when that wasn't working I would try Linuxconf. Just for grins, (and because windoze ICS went south) decided to try the ICS Lizard 'one more time'. And it worked. All 3 windoze machines are accessing just fine. And just for the record, 8.1 Does have drakgw. The thing I'm wondering is, of all the things I've tried to get the nerwork up and runnig, there are only two distinct things that I've done recently. In the machine address I set <the name>.homelan with no domain suffix and I started using Black Box as an environment; it's much better for my little old machine. But that's all folks, for now. Thank you none the less.
  4. AND for the Great Grand PooBah of HowTo sites there's always http://www.tldp.org/ The Linux Documentation Project Or you can download all the newest ones and update the ones in your distro. Now, the one caveat that you should know, from one n00bie to another, is that alot of them come from RedHat or some other distro and in My experience when you go to look for a file or drectory to edit or check to see if it's written right, it ain't there. I know that this may sound detracting to some of the more experienced members here, but I'd like to save you from some of the exasperation that I went through and let you know what to expect. One of the major aggravations that I had in dealing with Mandrake was not only my own ignorance but no place that I had searched through said anything about the directory structure being different from one distro to another, especially regarding the HowTo's. Forwarned is........... Admin might delete this as being negative but so be it. It's something a n00b should know.
  5. I caught this on Linux.org first, http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/32837.html But it was countered in this article http://www.business.scotsman.com/technolog...m?id=1014442003 Can we say, business posturing? I thought so.[/url]
  6. yep, has draknet but when it comes up it's window is blank and I have to KILL it after 5 minutes or so. but as usual and this is the fourth time around, MCC has screwed up so bad that I can't browse a damn thing now. I'll try installng Webmin before I do a clean and burn again. Strange how install works pretty well, but MCC is crap, though. Maybe I'll try Linuxconf only next time.
  7. Not sure if this belongs here, but thought it would be a good place. http://www.internetweek.com/story/showArti...icleID=13100775 My SO sent me this. She knows I advocate and thought I would get a kick out of it.
  8. Tried 9.1. Sent X down the toilet with both servers. Not sure if I got a good copy or not though. There was some scuttlebutt that there was a bad ISO on the servers for a little while. And have tried using the update sites too. (and yep, use LaGrosse as a nom de plume and a Furry persona)
  9. How to set up Mandy box as gateway for Win98 network? I started getting interested in Linux very shortly after I found the On switch to these silly things and have been trying to make a go of Open source for over a year and a half now. I've read the manuals, the How-Tos, this board along with a few others and FUBARed this box more times than I care to remember to get this working and still no joy after a year of trying. particulars: Running Mandy 8.1 on an old Packard Hell Linksys card USRobotics Modem Networking and gateway function work fine under the Redmond Stuff, though. And every single time I try to use MCC it screws EVERYTHING up, even to the point that I can get my modem to connect but I can't browse ANYTHING!! Any suggestions for the oldnewb?
  10. She's got a Compaq 5340. We got most of the 'impaqed' junk out of it with a clean and wipe and a pure Win98 install. Upped the systems resources from an optimist 57% (just loaded and sitting idle) to over 86% system resources free and actually using somethings in it. But the BIOS is the only thing we haven't been able to UNcompaq. Not a very friendly environment most of the time. We'll get it reloaded soon. I had scattered LILO on my Mandy 8.1 install and had to reload. BUT now, for the first time, I can get net connected through our network. So there is hope for me and Linux. Glad I found this board, too. I've been fighting Mandy 6.5 (no modem support) and 8.1 (no sound) for over a year and a half; but I refuse to let my technical ignorance get in the way of tenacity (read thick skull?) Thanks again. I'll be back.
  11. ooops She got tired of having to switch the hard drive jumpers and reformatted it. But will post it when we reinstall. I apologize for the bother at this time.
  12. While on the subject of LILO could anyone help me out. I've been dual booting my machine for awhile now (both single HDD and with 2) with few problems. But girlfriend's machine is behaving strangely. We have 98 installed on a partitioned Maxtor and after installing 9.1 AND 8.1 on another HDD it 'sees' the Windows in the Maxtor(hdb) but fails to point to the right file (whichever one groinkicks Windoze). LILO is pointing to COMMAND.COM in hdb1 but it comes back as an error when trying to boot. Perhaps the problem lies in that 98, during install, created a small FAT16 file in the first 63 sectors and THAT may be where the problem lies, but I've had no joy in trying to change where LILO points to; have tried both hdb1 and hdb2. Any ideas.
