  1. It goes like this as far as I know: 10.1 "Community Edition" has been officially released for everybody to download as you know. Next, (I don't know the exact time) there will be 10.1 "Official Edition". It will be made available first to paying club members. After some delay (1 week to 1 month) it will also be released to the general public freely. The difference between the two? Think of CE as a pre-release for impatient people who want to participate in the debugging process. OE is the final final release hopefully "production grade stable". If you are going to make one download only then wait for the OE.
  2. I have just installed MDK 10.1CE to my wife's old desktop machine (HP Pavilion 4550Z, 128MB, Celeron 466 as far as I remember). The only words that come to my mind to describe the experience are perfect and flawless. No problems at all for the time being! It works much better then the 10.0 on my laptop. Great job Mandrake! Thanks to everyone contributed to this milestone release.
  3. I just wanted to share my experiences. System: Vaio, AMD laptop with VIA soundcard, Alsa (snd-via82xx) Problem: When artsd is running nothing else can access the soundcard. soundwrapper is too slow for somethings (e.g. vice) and I want xmms to use alsa plugin. Solution: Make artsd suspend after 1 sec. But you can only do this if you disable full duplex operation! see attached snapshots and http://www.kde.org/areas/multimedia/arts-faq.php for further info. So if you accept a delay of 1 sec in the beginning, arts gets out of way. But this is just a workaround as only one program can access soundcard at a time. Whole thing with alsa, dmix, and arts is a mess. Anyway, I hope this helps others, too. tarelax
  4. I guess the major improvement is -as said- redefining the terminology by distinguishing cutting edge and stable/official. However, there is a big difference between releasing (for example Mandrake 9.2 as) a finished product and then issuing hundreds of MB of patches versus calling it a community release. The latter will -hopefully- shut up the Mandrake trolls. Creating a bug-free, polished official product is also important for businesses and serious users, who care more about stability. I am really hopeful for MDK 10 now. I guess I will not have the patience to wait for the official version :) tarelax
  5. Check this: Major change in Mandrake Linux' development process - "MandrakeSoft today announced a major evolution in the way that future Mandrake Linux distributions will be engineered and released. The purpose of this new development process is to provide the highest level of new features, as well as maximizing the quality of new products." all details about this exciting evolution are available in the following press-release. It looks like a major improvement from the QA perspective, if it goes as planned. Go Mandrake! tarelax
  6. Some ideas: -Regarding 9.2 isos. have you checked the md5sums of the iso files? This is very important. I myself had to download the 2nd CD twice to get the correct version. -In the 9.1 installation, I have experienced the same when installing 9.1 to my cousins computer. It was an old one with 64MB Ram. The installer gave a warning about low ram and suggested a text based install. (In his case, we went on and ended up with a very basic installation like the one you describe). In the worst case you can add CD2 and 3 as resources in MCC, and manually install packages from MCC (as my cousin). Another idea is to give an install option Ram=xxxMB or something like that. For this check the help files, I don't know if this would help at all. Good luck tarelax
  7. Spam is a difficult problem and I have heard that there are tons of good, complex solutions. I have setup my perfectly functioning spam solution with K-mail within half an hour. Maybe this would help. Go to http://kmail.kde.org/tools.html Read KMail and SpamAssassin part under Anti-Spam Tools section Go to control panel, add software, search for spamassasin, install related rmps. This will also install spamd service. Go to services in control panel, make sure it starts on boot. Now, follow the instructions in kmail site. Create filters as told. As suggested, I move possible spam mails to a spam folder I have created. No spam program is perfect, and you may not want to miss important mail. If necessary go to spamassasins.org for further info. Edit ~/.spamassasin/user_prefs file to create a whitelist to include addresses you don't want to be checked for spam: i.e friends, etc.. you may use *@blabla.com or *@*.bla.edu You have got now a pretty good functioning spamfilter embedded in Kmail. Cheers, tarelax

    Kdvi & LM 9.1

Hi, This was one of the problems that has been bugging me. But it was solved after I made the Mandrake upgrade tonight. Although I upgraded many things at the same time (thanks to broadband and choosing a less busy time of day 49MB of updates took only 5 mins), I suspect ghostscript updates may have solved the issue. Just wanted to share the joy :D tarelax

    Kdvi & LM 9.1

I have the same problem when using Kile. It was working fine in 9.0
  10. I have installed MDK 9.1 when it was labeleld RC3 (thanks to pclinuxonline), and learned that it is final from within. I have been using MDK since 7.x and this one is absolutely perfect. Mandrake simply carries the flag for desktop linux. Installer is now very professional and functioned perfectly in my case. Fonts look great out of the box(with a simple googling I have improved them further with ms fonts within minutes, too), Mandrake control panel (MCC) has matured, KDE 3.1 is incredible, except from konqueror crashing in some websites but I am sure that will improve with Safari collaboration with Apple. The system is very flexible, and you can fine tune it to the smallest detail according to your taste, which I like most. Icons, fonts, window styles, kicker you name it... You can even change the login manager from MCC. Stability was no issue already in 9.0, and I don't expect it to be otherwise in 9.1. I see some people complaining about crashes, driver problems etc. Please keep in mind that -almost- all drivers, programs are open source in linux. In windows world, every vendor supports and tests their hardware and programs specifically, and spends I don't know how many man-hours to make them work. Until vendors officially support linux on hardware and software, each distribution tries to do their job, too (in terms of system integration). If we want to linux succeed, we need to be more patient for a couple more years, and use google or look for friendly forums like this instead of "I have paid money, why doesn't this work" attitude. I suspect almost all stability issues are related to some driver, because many people including me have never experienced any stability problems (for desktop usage at least). Not that I have not my share of problems with my sound drivers... Back to the subject, I would like to thank Mandrake Team and MandrakeSoft for their great work. I would suggest anyone to upgrade. It is definitely worth it. ta_relax

    KDE 3.1 help?

Practically, KDE is too complex for a newbie to install, and wisest thing to do is to wait for an update in the distribution. I have heard MDK9.1 RC1 is on the mirrors so final cannot be far away. If you want to struggle with it, however, I would suggest you to visit pclinuxonline.com->forums->mdk rpm announcements. There are multiple discussions that might help you. ta_relax
