  1. That explains it. Do I have to download a telnet package now? Is SSH a similar package? Can I download and install it the same way as telnet?
  2. There are many entries for it but I haven't installed anything yet. Does this look correct?

    Telnet

Is there something that I have to activate to use Telnet in Mandriva for the first time? I used to use Telnet to login to my ISPs mail server from Windwos all the time and have heard that the Linux Telnet is better but when I type "telnet" into a terminal, I get "command not found".
  4. I think that I will go to mandriva 2007. Can anyone recomend a relibable site to download from?
  5. When I boot into Windows I can play my .mp3 and other sound files with no problems. So now I need to follow Gowators instructions at the top of page 3 to install urpmi (with the subsequent suggestions by scarecrow about changing the links)? I had done that following those postings. Try it again?
  6. http://jesse.sasktelwebsite.net/Soundsystemtest.jpg No, that button plays no sound. Time for a new sound card?
  7. I don't know of anyway to get .mp3 files without some kind of sharing program. I have a thread open on pcguide and they were trying to help me install Java so that I could instal Limewire. Do you know a site were I can download .mp3 or something else?
  8. When I try that with Amorak I get the "some media cannot be loaded: http://jesse.sasktelwebsite.net/Amorak.jpg What else can I try? I know that the speakers are connected properly because sound works in Windows, the sound was muted bu default but is reenabled... Could the problem be with my soundcard? I have read that there is a hardware compatibility list for linux. Nine is a ICH2 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controler. Would that be on the list?
  9. If you mean this, I couldn't find it. http://jesse.sasktelwebsite.net/Soundsystem.jpg
  10. Do I have to download the alsaconf packages?
  11. I have DSL as well, anyway... I looked at some of the previous posts. That seems to be the right spelling. What does urpmi mean?
  12. I have entered those commands, line by line. You said that it would take a wile. It took less than ten minutes. Is that how long it should be? If all is what it is supposed to be, I can install alsaconf now? Is that the command "urpmi alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins"?
  13. I used the Home icon on my desktop and found those .wav and .ogg files to try to play without amorak but I think that I may have broken someting already: http://jesse.sasktelwebsite.net/snapshot1.jpg http://jesse.sasktelwebsite.net/Soundsystem1.jpg http://jesse.sasktelwebsite.net/Soundsystem2.jpg
  14. cd /usr/share/sounds and there are plenty of files there for .wav and .ogg None of those will play when accessed through Amorak.
  15. I see what you mean now but how do I change the URLs? I just enter "urpmi alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins" and those URLs appeared on the screen. I see your example of the change of the URLs but how did you get from point A to point B? How would I know how to change another so that it works?
  16. Like that? I don't see how to update the paths.
  17. It looks like 2/3 and 3/3 didn't work. If that had worked would I be able to play .mp3 files from Mandriva?
  18. Does that mean that the Java program is tied to Firefox now?
  19. Is that how I was supposed to enter the command? What does that command do?
  20. I shut down Kmix and Amorok and...
  21. ICH2 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controler driver: i810_audio alternative drivers: snd-intel8x0 There doesn't seem to be anything that I can change there. When I click on "Configure Module" there are no parameters to change. OK, scratch that... there is a button called "Run Config Tool". When I click that there are many drivers to change to. I also followed part of your instructions that I had forgotten about before (hardware tab and check on full duplex). There was another loading bar indicating that the sound system was restarting but amoroK will still not play my .mp3 files. I don't know if this affects anything but there is a icon for Kmix in my system tray that seem to be disabled. "Mixer cannot be found". Also, I can open amorak and all of my .mp3 files are in the browser to the left, there are instructions to drag any of them to the right window to build a playlist but when I do the icon doesn't move from the left pane. Maybe part of the problem that I am having with playing sound is to do with amoraK.
  22. Thanks. I can go Star button - System - Configuration - KDE - Sound but I see no mention of KDE Control Center. Anyway, I followed that path and went into "Sound System" were I was able to "Enable the Sound System" and then "Enable networked sound" There was a loading bar indicating that the sound system was starting. I opened Amorak again to try that mp3 and was presented with and error message that quickly disapeared. I think that it said something about the void engine not running the mp3 file. Star button - System - Configuratiion - Configure your Computer - Hardware - look at and configure your hardware. There are no error mesasged beside the icon for the sound card as there would be in the device manager in Windows. How can I check that the proper output plugin is selected?
  23. I have found some of your postings were you outline the steps for this but they donot seem to pertain to me. The ones that I have found are for Mandriva 2007 and currenly I am running Mandriva 2006, the steps aren't the same. I can go to the Mandriva Linux Control Center but I can find no mention of sound control or multimedia...
  24. I have Amarok in my sytem tray. I can open it just like I would a Windows program, I click "files" snd browse to /jesse/home/ and drag and drop Ragdoll.mp3 to the right pane (the playlist) but the icon doesn't appear in the right pane. I moved this .mp3 from my other hard drive containing Windows. When I try to play it (even though I see nothing in the play list) I get a message saying "Some media could not be loaded(not playable)." Could that file be formated for Windows? Does Mandriva have any sound files installed by default? I would like to make sure that I can play sound files.
