I used the default mcc Software Packages Installation and when it was running it showed the title: rpmdrake. Do you think i'd be okay using i586 on a Pentium 3? At the same level as i586 there's one called SRPMS which has one of the packages i installed. but i can't find SRPMS in google, what does it mean? I was looking for a Power Pack version of 'driva '07 but couldn't find one so i guess i'm stuck w/o a ref. manual.

rp-pppoe-gui wasn't available on the "all packages, alphabetical" list.

Why is this CODE block messed up? I tried editing it twice. Is was okay in my previous thread (Can't connect to the internet with DHCP). I don't know where the <BR>'s are coming from, there are no tabs in the code.

Can't connect with PPPoE System: -- IBM Pentium 3 NetVista Type 6578-G9U -- SpeedStream 5200 ADSL modem Connected to one of two NICs using a good (on Windows) E'net cable. ifup pppd or ppp1 gives: sbin/ifup: config for pppd not found ifup ppp0 gives: pppd: unrecognized option 'No'

I mean Linux start-up msg's which occur right after what used to be called the BIOS msg's. Yes, these are in /var/log/messages! Thank you, that will be a big help. The only possible deal breaker I see is: -- ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on at. -- pppd[5335]: unrecognized option 'No' -- ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on at. -- pppd[5282]: unrecognized option 'No' How can I get these msg's to windows? i.e. can I format a file on my flash drive that will be readable by XP?

I found one problem -- the etc/hosts file had only one entry, localhost, and it was mapped to sympatico.ca! I fixed that and rebooted, but it still isn't trying. I don't see any BIOS errors for pppd, but i sure would like to slow that screen down! I did that but the Ethernet led on the modem went out and there was no activity on the NIC. In the BIOS msg's it said that pppd had an unrecognized option: "No". I figured i could get the same info from mcc, but it didn't seem to have any problems. Can i slow down the bios stuff? Should it matter?

Thru the mcc package install (titled rpmdrake) I was given: -- rp-pppoe-3.5-5mdk -- libpcrp0-0.9.1-1mdk -- ppp-2.4.3-9mdk I created a new connection (ADSL & PPPoE) but it didn't really try (the top led flickered for less than a second when i created it and when i test the connection there's no activity at all). I suspect the NIC is bad. I can't try another slot as the rest are too small, but i do have another card.

That seems to involved going on the internet and that's what I can't do right now. I have 2006 Mandriva, which according to the release notes means I should be using Smart http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2006/Notes But I don't have a clue as to how to follow the first instruction. In the Control Center it says that urpmi is a command line thing and i need the Reference Manual which I can't find and suspect it didn't come with my distro -- any ideas? So in the meantime I'm going on with the rpm which i'll download on XP and flash drive over.

I think i did a full developer install so this should be there, right? Will i be able to download RP-PPPoE via Windows (and xfer it with a flash drive)? To use Bell Sympatico I need a PPPoE package from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/en/penguin/o...roducts/rpPppoe All the same, when I test the connection (thru Monitor Connections in the Control Center), there is no LED activity on the NIC. I'd try another slot except there's only one that's big enough (it's an IBM P3 Netvista) Thanks for reading this far, Peter

Are there any NIC related error messages posted in /var/log/messages during bootup? daniewicz I did an install from scratch yesterday. At one point the modem did seem to be working, normally the leds don't show much action. These show up quite often in /var/log/messages: eth0: Realtek @ 0xd0962f00, 00 ... 00, IRQ 21 no MII transceiver! Assuming SYM link up, 10Mbps, half duplex, lpa 0x0 BTW the DHCP timeout used to be 0, which I've now set to 5 secs. I can't setup a new conn. in Control Center. It won't accept any Host name, even 127.0.0.1, for what is supposedly an optional field. In Manage hosts it shows only one (local host).

The ifconfig looks the same as before, with no ifv6. I guess it's okay to leave /etc/modprobe.conf as it now is? Thanks again, Peter

I can't install a Realtek RTL-8129 NIC card on a Cheapbytes Mandriva 2006. I configured it with Command Center and it appears in lspci, but ifup fails and ifconfig shows a HWadddr of zeroes. My system is an IBM Pentium 3 NetVista Type 6578-G9U. Hope you can help (I'm new to Linux), Peter

I'm using the same cable for XP and Linux, is this okay? I got 198.235.216.130/131/134 from http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7525 and appended them to /etc/resolv.conf and put a # before nameserver 192.168.2.1. Connect ethernet under network monitoring did the same as before: -- it showed some trailing dots, then -- "connection complete" and then -- "not connected" Maybe I should confirm some of my settings: MCC > Manage Connections > eth0 > TCP/IP > DHCP has 192.168.2.13 but greyed out. MCC > Manage Connections > eth0 > DNS servers has 192.168.2.1 *it seems not to have noticed my changes to resolv.conf; how do I change this? *I've tried rebooting but the changes get dropped! (I did apply them as root) MCC > Manage Connections > eth0 > search domain has no-domain-set.bellcanada MCC > Manage Connections > eth0 > DHCP > DHCP client has dhclient MCC > Manage Connections > eth0 > DHCP > Assign host name from DHCP address is checked but DHCP host name is blank and DHCP timeout is blank. MCC > Manage Connections > eth0 > DHCP > Get DNS servers from DHCP is checked MCC > Manage Connections > eth0 > options has Start at boot and hot-plugging checked.

host 192.168.2.1 also gives "No servers could be reached". I couldn't think of a DHCP host name to give it.
