  1. I'm using the "find" command found on the star menu. Yes, it has alweays done this, and installed the recent updates, there are not many of them, possibly when mdk cleans up the mirror/urpmi mess there will be a fix.
  2. I might like to change hostname to something neat, but find nothing like what you mention maybe 'cause I'm not on a LAN/network whatever? this is a home computer, connects only by dial-up to ISP. I find in /etc/sysconfig/networking this: DEVICE=lo IPADDR=127.0.0.1 NETMASK=255.0.0.0 NETWORK=127.0.0.0 # If you're having problems with gated making 127.0.0.0/8 a martian, # you can change this to something else (255.255.255.255, for example) BROADCAST=127.255.255.255 ONBOOT=yes NAME=loopback which is all either meaningless or gibberish. As usual. Comments please.
  3. Title says it all. None of the buttons work after I click "find", and must use ctrl-esc to stop it. Using 10CE Any ideas?
  4. Got it! ftp://ftp.icm.edu.pl still worked. Installed both ('though urpmi didn't like the kernel) and re-installed nvidia - looking good. Thanks :D
  5. Um. I can't find kernel-source- 2.6.3-7mdk anywhere. Is there a url?
  6. I agree with glennp that it's a good idea for the seller, but I assume the chip remains active after purchase, so that if my keystrokes can be detected from outside a residence, so can the chip in this printer. This then qualifies as invasion of privacy. Don't need it.

  8. Or try guarddog - I found it easier.

    wget slows

Seems like it is wget, and not something I did. Thanks. Kget works ok though.
  10. My cpu runs at a mere 1.53 gHz and the original cooling fan was ---words fail me. Consider buying hearing protectors. I now have a Hydrocool water cooling system, can even hear myself think. :D

    wget slows

Downloaded the latest kernel and kernel-source for 9.1, one from unc.edu, other from sunet.se, and noticed on both that the transfer rate gradually decreased from normal 2.9 kb/s to 1.5 kb/s, so download took much longer than it should have. First time I've used wget. Has anyone noticed this? Can anything be done about it? I download to a file so I can burn an update cd; wget seemed a better choice than Opera as I don't have to keep poking the "resume" button.
  12. I was exploring this app, and after closing it saw that gkrellm was showing 100% cpu usage. Could do nothing about it, until I did an urpme gnome-iconedit. If I ever find a use for this, is there a way of controlling the beast?
  13. I'm a little more awake now... Running as a cron job might be dangerous, see the recent posts about a security update for XFree86.
  14. Go here: http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php and do what it says.
  15. Have you looked In BIOS to see why your computer won't boot from CD?
  16. Just my curiousity, but why not use Konqueror?
  17. How about: urpmi gnupg then maybe need the key(s) from Mandrakesecure or whatever, maybe don't need it.

    What the?

Yes, that's it, except mine had a green troll with teeth. And the last line said "There is no spoon" :D

    What the?

Was looking through the forum for what the voltage specs are for -5V (suspect mine is out of spec at -5.26 tp -5.4V) and at http://www.amdforums.com/showthread.php?th...ghlight=voltage I saw this <attachment> How did he do that? Just found that I don't know how to paste the .png image in here.

    Overvoltage

Just installed gkrellm and lm_sensors, and I see that voltage in both Vcor and -5V is out of limits- Vcor is showing 1.74 and occasionally flashes red, while -5V is normally -5.32 and also flashes red. Checked these voltages in BIOS and they are accurate. Is there anything I can do about this other than buying a new power supply?
  21. Where do you get pretty wallpapers? Mine are boring

    Port Scan

urpme webmin didn't fix the problem permanently, but guarddog did. :D Didn't understand the Mandrake firewall utility. Passes both dslreports and shieldsup tests.B) More to learn now... Thanks all.

    Port Scan

linux_learner jogged my memory - last time I installed Mandrake webmin was installed. So I did urpme to it, and now port scan shows nothing open. Thanks for your replies. I have some learning to do about ports. :D

    Port Scan

Just did a port scan at dslreports.com, and got this: Your IP Address Conclusion: Possible Problem! We did get information from scanning your ports, this information could encourage attackers to probe further. Do you know why you are advertising these services to the net? perhaps installation of a firewall, or reconfiguration of your firewall to be more secure, would provide peace of mind. other TCP CLOSED We received a response that this port was closed. Is this something to be concerned about? And if so, any suggestions?
