  1. I used urpmi and got xorg installed, it has the mouse error, so no scrolling. When I did an update using the install CD1, the error now was "Your Xorg configuration file is broken, we will ignore it." Anyway, it works well enough so that it I'm using now in Konqueror, can't install Opera due missing libstdc* Fix that later. Thanks for the help
  2. The problem is that xorg isn't installed, as the error appears during install. There is only a choice of proceeding with install or cancelling. My video card is a Geforce2 mx/mx400.
  3. I downloaded the free 2006 install disk, and found that xorg gives an error on install, so no gui. Downloaded some xorg-x11-blah rpms from SeerofSouls website that should fix this problem by installing later, but they require depencencies such as: libxorg-x11 = 6.9.0 X11-libs = 6.9.0 libXau.so.6 libXdmc0.so.6 Is there a downloadable xorg made for mandriva 2006 that would fit without driving me crazy with dependancy issues? Or anyway of solving this problelm? BTW I'm on dialup. The xorg I downloaded is: http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xorg-x11-...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xscavenge...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xscreensa...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xscreensa...06.SoS.i586.rpm http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/xscreensa...06.SoS.i586.rpm
  4. Somewhere in KDE control centre there is "keyboard layout". Might that be what you are looking for?
  5. Chmod a+x means: change permissions for all users (a) and add (+) making it executable (x). AFAIK the java install instructions always require that command, so it has nothing to do with anything else.
  6. Face it, we are the l33t. It will be many moons before linux rules the roost, but it might happen.

    copy dvd

It's the easiest for me, just haven't looked for another ripper/burner.
  8. Maybe Paul can do better, but here's an example of how to do it. http://www.insyte.uni.cc/ Most of this should work with mdk.
  9. Lilo has been rock-solid reliable. When I first tried Linux (Lycoris) I had too may troubles with the mysterious kernel panics. Knew then even less than now, never learned what to do about it. Grub is for those who know how to fix it. :P
  10. Be sure to defragment windows before installing linux on that drive. I've used both lilo and grub; never had a problem with lilo, but for most it seems a matter of taste. For the rest, I have no experience.
  11. The latest is lxdvdrip-1.42-pre2.tgz It works perfectly, got it from the berlios home site.
  12. Update on lxdvdrip; it wasn't working with NTSC dvds, that's fixed with the latest version.

    Solution: lxdvdrip
  14. Fixed it - I put /sbin/modprobe nvidia into /etc/rc.d/rc.modules. It boots as it should. Also found a note: With the new NVIDIA 6629 drivers, you also have to add this line: Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true" to the Section "Device" of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file if you want to use the composite options and have GLX / 3d acceleration. The README warns that this may have negative effects on the displaying of OpenGL applications. I didn't see this in the README, and it seems to do nothing. (?)
  15. /my bad. I was sure I installed the nvidia driver, but re-installed, this time I did rtfm, and now have no more black strip. glxgears shows 5340 FPS. Yay. However, now mdk boots into init 3, I have to do /sbin/modprobe nvidia, then startx. I remember having a note that a line must be added somewhere so it will boot normally, but can't find it. (Never been neat, but usually I don't throw out such stuff. Aargh.) Does anyone have that needed line, and where to put it?
  16. After install of Mandrake 10.1 I have a black strip on the left of the desktop, it's about 1/4" wide. I'm using KDE. This always happened with earlier versions of mdk, but disappeared when I installed nvidia driver. Not this time. Ideas anyone?
  17. a13x, I have the same problem, please tell how you solved it.
  18. You don't really need to have XP on the master drive. I also have two hard drives, windose is on the slave. Here is the relevant section from my /etc/lilo.conf: other = /dev/hdb1 label = win98 table = /dev/hdb map-drive = 0x80 to = 0x81 map-drive = 0x81 to = 0x80 This is supposed to fool windose into believing it's on the master. Whatever, it works.

    copy dvd

I bought for thie first time a movie on dvd. I always make a copy of these disks, such as install CDs, and use the copy lest the original gets scratched or damaged. Is there a way of coypying this movie? Googling is confusing, as I'm new to DVDs.
  20. Forgotten how I did it last time, but install from source is usually: untar using ark, sending it to a new-made directory, cd to the lm_sensors folder in that dir, then: ./'configure make su <password> make install (or checkinstall - will get an rpm you can use next install, if ever). You would have installed i2c first, of course.

    mkbootdisk

Is it possible to make another boot floppy for 10OE? The install prog made one, but when I try with mkbootdisk, it just says something like disk too full, this with a freshly formatted floppy.
  22. Hope this isn't too obvious, but you did type "startx" after login?
