  1. The lm_sensors libraries were already installed when I started this. That caused some of the confusion. I think that part of the problem was that my internet connection dropped out during one install. That could not have helped. We have a very flaky DSL here in the Boston area. It is working fine now. All I need to do is figure out what "temp1" and "temp2" are on my MOBO. They are reading within one degree of each other all the time right now, so I don't know how I will find out. Right now I am going to bed. Thanks for the help. Banjo (_)=='=~
  2. Well I am talking to myself again. It has been a long week. After I got lm_sensors to install it all worked as advertised. I ran sensors-detect taking the default answers. Here is the relevant piece of the output: Found `Fintek F71882FG/F71883FG Super IO Sensors' Success! (address 0xa10, driver `f71882fg') ... Driver `f71882fg' (should be inserted): Detects correctly: * ISA bus, address 0xa10 Chip `Fintek F71882FG/F71883FG Super IO Sensors' (confidence: 9) I told it to create /etc/sysconfig/lm_sensors, and after I rebooted the computer, gkrellm was able to pick up a bunch of sensors. Sorry for wasting the bandwidth. Banjo (_)=='=~
  3. OK. This is just weird. In the Mandrake Control Center it showed liblm_sensors3 installed and also liblm_sensors4 installed. Well actually liblm_sensors4 was in the uninstalled search, but it was checked off as if it had been installed and I could not uncheck it. When I tried to install lm_sensors it reported a library conflict. Just on a whim I shut down the control center and restarted it. That cleared out the funky checkmarks and I was able to install lm_sensors. I now have sensors-detect. I will see if I can take it from here. I have also seen problems installing packages and the control center complains that the database is locked. The same trick of restarting the control center seems to clear that up as well. Thanks for listening. Linux rocks! Banjo (_)=='=~
  4. I have a newly installed Mandy 2008.1 and I am running gkrellm. I would like to monitor the temperatures but I cannot figure out how to set this up to read them. I think I have lm_sensors installed because [root@localhost thermal_zone]# rpm -qa | grep lm_sen liblm_sensors3-2.10.5-3mdv2008.1 But when I attempt to configure the utility I get this: [root@localhost thermal_zone]# sensors-detect bash: sensors-detect: command not found I am running this as root for sure. I see nothing in the folder /proc/acpi/thermal_zone I attempted to install the package "lm_sensors - Utilities for lm_sensors" and the installation failed telling me that there was a conflict with the libraries already installed. I just created this thing and I have done all the updates, so I am puzzled. What do I need to get? Help. Thanks in advance Banjo (_)=='=~
  5. This is the first time I have ever installed Mandy from anything other than a Powerpack so I am struggling to find the apps I need. So far the package manager has made it pretty easy once I figure out which package to install. Last night I installed a new kernel to get past the 880 Meg RAM limitation. I was a little nervous about yanking out the beating heart of my system and replacing it, but it worked as advertised. :D So far I am happy with my choice to stay with Mandy. I had looked at ubuntu, but chose not to jump ship. Mandy rocks. Banjo (_)=='=~
  6. On the other hand, the dynamic download of the package information is kind of nice. I remember in the bad old days downloading megabytes of stuff that I would never look at because it was an all or nothing approach. I don't see a whole lot of value in being able to browse the apps in the package manager. The package names are so cryptic that you have to know what you are looking for anyway, like kdewebdev, or you won't understand what you are looking at. Not complaining. I downloaded and installed lots of apps yesterday on my new system and it worked pretty well. Banjo (_)=='=~
  7. How does anyone find time to use this stuff when we have to spend all of our time upgrading it? It seems silly. Thanks for the help anyway. Banjo (_)=='=~
  8. Ah yes, kdewebdev. That was going to be my next guess after "quanta" Actually, I vaguely remember reading that somewhere a few months ago. It worked fine. Thanks for the tip. I also tried "urpmq --list-url" which worked fine. When I go into Config Media and select a repository and click on Edit, the line comes up blank. I knew I that I have URLs in there because I have been installing apps all day. For some reason the GUI tool is not showing me the details. So much for the fancy GUI stuff (said the guy who spent the last 25 years developing GUI's) CLI rules! Linux rocks! Banjo (_)=='=~
  9. John, Thanks for the answer. I guess I will experiment. I did manage to export my address book over using a CSV file, but it left behind my distribution list. I will try moving the folders over some time and see what happens. I have to ponder why software developers would think that making it necessary to start over from scratch after an upgrade is an accepted and understood limitation... especially when we are forced to upgrade so often to keep up. I upgraded to 2006 only about 3 years ago, and that does not seem to me to be a long time ago. I guess I am slowing down Banjo (_)=='=~
  10. I just installed mandy 2008.1 from the Live CD. It went well and I am looking for apps. I cannot find Quanta in the repositories. All it finds is kde4-quanta. It does not find it installed either. I need my quanta. What am I doing wrong? I must have screwed something up out at easyurpmi. Also, while I am at it, how do I see a list of the mirrors I am using for the repositories? All the Configure Media page shows me is what is enabled. Where can I see the mirror list? Thanks to all. Linux rocks! Banjo (_)=='=~
  11. I know this has been asked before, but I do not know how to implement the answers I have read. Here is the situation. I just built a new computer and put Mandy 2008.1 on it. My other computer has mandy 2006 on it. So far so good. Kmail is my email client and I have years of messages and addresses and distribution lists on it that took many hours to create. The last time I upgraded (from 9.1 to 2006) I imported my mail (in maildir format) by tar'ing my Mail folder on the old system and then extracting it on the new system. I see that with 2008.1 the Mail folder is gone. It seems to be located down in .kde/share/apps/kmail/mail. Can I just put my old mail in there like before? How do I import my address list and other setups? The method I have seen recommended for importing Kmail is to just copy the entire .kde folder over from the new system. But it appears that .kde/share/apps/kmail is entirely different now. I doubt that copying an old version of it will do anything but cause trouble. Help, please.. Thanks, Banjo (_)=='=~ [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  12. I have been fnWindows free at home now for about 5 years. Started on Mandy 9.1. Upgraded to Mandy 2006. Looking to upgrade to Mandy 2008.1 +No anti-virus scans taking 90% of my CPU +No anti-adware scans taking the other 10% of my CPU +No MicroSoft tax every couple of years. +No blue screen crashes +If it is broken I can fix it; no 30 minute hold waiting for tech support +Great support team here at Mandrivausers. +Applications are better than fnWindowz apps. The list goes on. -Applications upgrades run out of steam rather quickly, requiring an OS version upgrade. That's about it. Banjo (_)=='=~
  13. Thanks for all the info. I guess I made a bad choice with the C84. At least I now have some places to go to do some research. My son now has an HP F380, but he has it down at college, so I can't try it here. And when I was in the store I did not see any. The printer models come and go in a few months. I might have to pick one and order it online. Thanks again for the great info. Banjo (_)=='=~
  14. I think maybe the problem with mine might be that it got only light use. I just don't print in color very much. During the time that the printer was working, the output was fine. I got some very high quality photos out of it. I have read other comments about the Epson printers not working well if they are left sitting unused for any length of time. It also could be that the C84 was just a dog too. Both of our printers were the same model and they failed the same way after the same length of time. Thanks for the info. Banjo (_)=='=~
  15. John, I actually had two C84's... one for my son down in college and one here at home. Both of them failed in the same way (the black head failed) within weeks of each other. I did not get three years out of either printer. We never put anything into the printers but Epson ink straight from the retail store. I never refilled a cartridge or used any third-party parts or inks. I have a bag full of new Epson cartridges sitting on the floor under the dead printer right now. The printer did not live long enough to put them in. The most annoying thing about the printer was that the heads would dry up and stop working if I left it sitting without printing anything for more than two or three days. At that point, I had to clean the heads to get it working again. Cleaning the heads cost me 3% of my ink every time I did it, and I had to clean the heads every time I printed anything. I even started turning the printer on every day and printing a "test" sheet that would exercize all of the ink jets since doing that was costing me less ink than cleaning the heads. That only worked for a while, and then that scheme failed as well and I had to go back to cleaning the heads. Eventually, the black head just failed and the printer is toast. I think I must have spent 95% of the ink and the paper that went through the thing just to keep it going. If you are having good luck with them, then stick with them, but I am giving up. Maybe they use a different technology down in Oz. I don't know. Thanks for the input anyway. Linux rocks! Brian (_)=='=~
  16. Greetings, My Epson C84 printer has died. The print head for the black cartridge quit working, and since the print heads in the Epson do not come with the printer cartridge, the printer is toast. I will not buy another Epson for that reason and some others. I find that I am now in need of an inkjet printer/scanner that will work with my Mandy 2006 system. It would be nice to have a printer/scanner so that I can hook a scanner up to my Linux computer since the only scanner I have is a beat-up old Umax Astra (POS) that will only run on my beat-up old Windows98 computer, but it is not essential. I have tried looking up compatible printers on linux-usb.org and also on the Mandriva hardware compatibility database with no joy. It seems that every time I go to the computer store all of the printer models have changed again, and what was there last week is no longer available. Does anybody here have any information that will allow me to find a printer model or printer family that will work with my Linux? What kinds of printers do you guys use? I am running Mandy 2006 using CUPS and KDE. My Lexmark laser works fine, and the Epson was working OK before the print head died. I would hate to buy a printer just to find out that it will not work on my Linux. Thanks in advance Banjo (_)=='=~
  17. Please don't think that I am complaining. I am trying to understand how this system works. I read somewhere in here that one should always upgrade via the repositories to make sure that the app will work. I guess that is not always true. I am not expecting support for 2006. I am not reporting a bug that needs to be fixed, I just want to install an upgraded version of an application. That is not "support" for the OS. That is just installing an application. That is quite an impressive list. :D I think I like it! I guess I need some more education on installing these things. The answer seems to be to download Firefox 2 from the firefox site and install it that way. BTW I am in no danger of going back to fnWindows. I bailed out on that about 4 years ago and have never looked back. I just get confused at all of the ways of upgrading things on Linux. Thanks to everybody for all the information. I will look into the other methods to get my Firefox. Banjo (_)=='=~
  18. adamw, Thanks for the reply. I was suspecting that was the case. I see this as a hole in the urpmi scheme of building apps packages for releases. It may provide a guarantee that the apps will work, but it also forces the user to upgrade the entire OS in order to continue upgrading the apps. That is a royal pain for those of us who just want to use the system for a while. Here is the list of Windows OS's that you can (supposedly) install Firefox 2 onto: * Windows 98 * Windows 98 SE * Windows ME * Windows NT 4.0 * Windows 2000 * Windows XP (Recommended) * Windows Vista I am not defending fnWindows. I imagine that installing FF2 on Win98 will not work all that well. But...... If I am still running a Win2000, I suspect that it would work OK. 'Nuff said. I will probably upgrade to 1.5 (yep.... I haven't even done *that* yet LOL) or just live with what I have until I make my new computer in a couple of years. Thanks to all Linux rocks! Banjo (_)=='=~
  19. I did finally search for "firefox" and the highest version it came up with was 1.5. Is is possible to install a 2.x on Mandy 2006? If so, where can I get it? What if I download from the firefox site? This is all so confusing. Thanks for the help. Maybe I will just wait until I do the next upgrade. It gives me an excuse to upgrade the hardware at the same time. Banjo (_)=='=~ P.S. From the Firefox site: Linux kernel - 2.2.14 with the following libraries or packages minimums: * glibc 2.3.2 * gtk+2.0 * XFree86-3.3.6 * fontconfig (also known as xft) * libstdc++5 I need to check that my system will satisfy this. Anybody know a quick way to check this? rpm -q just tells me that most of them are not installed, which is not true since I am running KDE.
  20. Well, I guess that was an academic question for me. I have all my urpmi sources set up, main, contrib, updates, both PLF's and all the CD's and when I search for "firefox 2" it comes up with nothing. Maybe it just isn't available on Mandy 2006. Is that the real name of it, or should I be searching for something else? As far as keeping applications up to date, Linux still sucks. The last time I tried to do this sort of thing I had to upgade the whole OS in order to install the upgraded apps. I love my Linux, but that really sucks. Banjo (_)=='=~
  21. I currently have 1.x. If I install 2.x will it reformat my profiles for me or do I have to start over again? I have a few people using this thing, and I don't want to blow away their configs. How about going back to Plan B after it makes a mess in the bed? Is that possible? Thanks Banjo (_)=='=~
  22. Late addition to this thread. Is it necessary to uninstall Firefox 1 before installing Firefox2, or will they coexist nicely? Thanks, Banjo (_)=='=~
  23. Thanks. I will take a look at them both. Banjo (_)=='=~
  24. Greetings, I am looking for some software that will allow me to print a monthly calendar on paper. I would prefer a simple calendar with big boxes to write stuff in, preferably spreading the calendar over two or more letter-size sheets. I have Googled until my fingers are sore and found nothing. This stuff used to be as common as fleas. I am running Mandy 2006 if that helps. I also have Ooo 2.0-pre if anyone knows of a usable macro for that version. Anybody on this forum know of any such thing for Mandy? Thanks in advance Banjo (_)=='=~
  25. I agree. A server is a different kettle of fish. I don't have that amount of time invested in my setup. Banjo (_)=='=~
