    It is good to see that you are still watching this forum.

     

    I looked for scanext.lai and there was no one to be found. So I copied scanext.la into .libs/scanext.lai and repeated the installation, and it went in error free.

     

    I logged out and back in and used the Mandriva Control Center to install the printer from the network, and all is well. It found the printer and the driver.

     

    I still do not know the relationship between the .la file and the .lai file, but the installer seems to just copy the .lai into an equivalent .la on the system, so I took a shot.

     

    The printer and scanner now both work.

  2. My old printer died, so I got a new one. HP 3510. I am still running Mandy 2010.2, so the new printer has no driver in the OS.

     

    I downloaded and compiled the latest HPLIP, 3.13.3. When I make install, I get the error message:

     

    libtool: install: /usr/bin/install -c .libs/scanext.lai /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/scanext.la
    /usr/bin/install: cannot stat `.libs/scanext.lai': No such file or directory
    make[1]: *** [install-scanextLTLIBRARIES] Error 1
    

     

    Sure enough, there is no scanext.lai in the hplip-3.13.3 directory. There is a scanext.la in there, but no scanext.lai.

     

    What is this file, and how do I create/procure one so that I can install this driver? Can I just copy scanext.la into scanext.lai? It appears that is what the installer is doing.

  3. I got started with Linux on this board back in 2003. Without Mandrakeusers ( now Mandrivausers ) I would have been totally lost. Many thanks to all and anyone who may still be watching this.

     

    I am still running Mandriva 2010.2 and it is working fine for me so far. The constant updates have finally quieted down, so I suspect that soon it will be necessary to upgrade. I think I will try Mageia when I do that.

  4. Yes, but something different is going on because the "installation" involved only unzipping a tar file into /opt. There were no packages or configuration involved.

     

    If I try to find php, I get:

     

    $ which php
    which: no php in (/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin/:/usr/games:/usr/lib/qt4/bin)
    

     

    I suppose I could edit my path to find it down in /opt.

     

    I had previously installed MySQL, but it is not running ( no daemon ). If I query the package manager:

    The package manager only recognizes the previously installed MySQL, but not the other two. It does find perl as well, but I think I had previously installed perl ( I don't remember ). Does this mean that I have two copies of those programs installed on the computer?

     

    Yet when I start lampp, it all works. Somehow it is doing an end-around-run past the package manager.

     

    Very strange. I am not complaining because it looks to be very useful and simple. I am just puzzled about how all of this is hanging together.

  5. I think I have found an answer to this, so I apologize for posting a question to the forum needlessly. I have installed XAMPP,and it appears to work fine.

    Unfortunately, this is more trouble than copying the file from .html to .php and then uploading because I have to run lampp as root and install the web page in /opt/lamp/htdocs/ in order to see it. If I were going to try to trouble-shoot some more complex PHP, this would be a dream utility. It is dead easy to install and works as advertised. But for simply viewing the html contents of the file it is more steps than my copy trick.

     

    I plan on leaving this utility permanently installed for future use. It looks like a great tool.

  6. I have been forced to exchange my index.shtml for index.php to get around a failed hit counter written in perl. The new index.php page and its new hit counter are working fine with php, but the only way I can view it is by uploading it to the host.

     

    Is there a simple php interpreter that I can run locally, short of installing Apache, to view my file before uploading it? I am not trying to debug the PHP locally. The php in it is so simple that it is a tiny part of the page. I just want to be able to see the content of the page before uploading it. Firefox just bails out on the whole file because there is no php on this computer.

     

    I can edit the file as a .html file, live through the php errors, and then rename to .php for upload, but that is a pain in the neck and error prone. Having a simple, standalone php interpreter would be better. I need to convince Firefox to display the file even though it is a .php file, even if it just throws out the php code.

     

    Ideas, thoughts, dope-slaps?

  7. Some of the stuff he mentions looks like fluff to me. A better login manager? I don't recall the login manager being an issue for me.

     

    The last time I installed a Power Pack, it had a list of checkboxes for the stuff I wanted to install. So how is this list of checkboxes different from previous versions?

     

    Included CODEC's? The Power Pack has always included CODEC's and proprietary drivers.

     

    I think this guy is a bit behind the times.

     

    I would prefer to see a review of meatier issues WRT the 2011 release.

  8. Just in case anyone was curious about the outcome of my paranoid question from a couple weeks ago, I finally got around to jumping off the update cliff.

     

    Mandriva updated 50 packages tonight including dozens of KDE Core packages, the GIMP, Thunderbird, etc. etc. and it seems to have survived. I even rebooted the computer after the update just to make sure that it didn't get hosed. :thumbs:

     

    Unfortunately, it is now reminding me that there is a newer version of Mandriva available. :wall: So I guess that is the end of the updates for 2010.2 and now I am getting the push for Mandy 2011. From what I have heard about 2011, I will probably go look for a different distro... like Mageia or perhaps Debian.

     

    How is everybody doing with Mageia?

  9. I am being pestered by an update notice from Mandriva which contains dozens of updates to the "KDE 4 core library". One of them is "libkdefakes5". What? Is this stuff legit?

     

    It is scary when the core of my system is going to me modified on a large scale. Is anybody here familiar with this update? Has anybody installed these updates? And if so, how did it go?

  10. Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but on a lark I ran smartctl on my old disk which I replaced last Spring because it was acting up so badly the computer was fairly useless. Interesting result ( posted below ) passes that old disk as well, but with "ATA Error Count: 29633". I wonder if I replaced the disk when the trouble was really in the cable. The disk is now in a USB external case and mounts OK.

  11. OK. That was easy. I installed the smart tools package and ran smartctl against the disk. It passed with one error reported about air flow temperature. I am not sure how to read this stuff so I need to do some studying. Here is the output if anyone is interested.

  12. Thanks to everybody for their answers. Lots of good ideas to look at.

     

    I booted the computer around 18:30 local time yesterday and left it running all night. It was used all day today, and there were no reported problems with it. It is now about 21:30 local time, so it has been running for more than 24 hours. I looked at the messages log and found no more incidents of DMA errors reported.

     

    I think that the SATA cable was rectifying some noise on a connector or something... or was just a bit loose.

     

    I think I am going to leave the computer alone for a while and watch the log. Maybe this weekend I can find some time to check out the BIOS and the disk drive to see if there are any clues.

     

    I do not have smartctl installed. I will look for it.

  13. Today, my Mandy 2010.2 system failed to boot. It has been fine since I installed it last Spring, and today, when I was not at home, it failed to boot with a bunch of ATA error messages. My family did not know what to do, so they just shut it off and told me when I got home. :angry:

    I have posted this to hardware because that is what it looks like to me. However I have Googled some of these errors, and the some folks said that they fixed this with a kernel upgrade, so it may be software. Others say that it is indicative of a hard disk failure. Others have said it is due to a faulty ATA cable.

     

    The disk is a Seagate Barracuda ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA hooked into an old Foxconn MOBO that I have forgotten the model number of. The Seagate drive was bought new last Spring to replace another drive that failed. The MOBO has been working OK for about 3 years now.

     

    I jiggled the SATA cable on both the MOBO and the disk drive to reseat it, and the computer booted OK.

     

    Does anybody recognize these errors and have any idea what might be the problem? Kernel issue? Failing disk drive? Noisy cable?

  14. I am back at my Linux box and checked out the font situation. I brought up the MCC and checked out what fonts are installed. Here is the list of the installed fonts packages:

     

    fonts-ttf-bitstream-vera
    fonts-ttf-decoratives
    fonts-ttf-dejavu
    fonts-ttf-liberation
    fonts-ttf-west_european
    

     

    It turns out that the Liberation fonts are GPL fonts that replace the fonts I was looking for. Quoting from the Wikipedia:

     

    Liberation is the collective name of four TrueType font families: Liberation Sans, Liberation Sans Narrow, Liberation Serif and Liberation Mono. These fonts are metric-compatible with Monotype Corporation's Arial, Arial Narrow, Times New Roman, and Courier New (respectively), the most commonly used fonts on Microsoft's Windows operating system and Office suite.

    The Liberation fonts are available in OpenOffice, so I just have to use the Liberation fonts to get the look I want. I don't have to install or uninstall anything. The fonts I need were installed under a different name all along. :wall:

  15. OK. Thanks for the info. I had no idea that there were fonts in the repos. Live and learn.

     

    I actually got the link to pbone from a link on this forum to the tutorial at howtoforge which had the link to pbone. Maybe that is too many links to trust. :unsure: . I followed that tutorial for Mandy 2008 and it worked fine. It must be a stale rpm.

     

    Oh well. Back to the drawing board. I am not at my Linux box right now, but I might try to uninstall the other rpm and do it through the repositories. As I remember, the other rpm did a lot of stuff to the system, but I don't remember what all of it was.

  16. I have a new Mandy 2010.2 installation from the KDE Live CD. Most of it is working fine, but I still cannot seem to get the TrueType fonts installed and working with OpenOffice. I followed the instruction out at howtoforge.com ( which worked fine for Mandy 2008 a few years ago ), but I still do not have the fonts available. The instructions install an RPM from www.pbone.net

     

    The installer claimed it was installing lots of stuff, but I still don't have the fonts I want ( Times Roman, Courier).

     

    Can anybody give me a clue as to where to start looking? I am not familiar with where the font stuff goes.

  17. Dicho y hecho.

     

    I uninstalled it, logged out and logged back in, and it's gone.

     

    I think that the snapshot daemon was also responsible for bothering us with popup boxes saying "USB device ready for backup" every time we plugged in a USB disk drive or thumb drive. We shall see when I do my backups later today.

  18. My CPU just got real busy for no apparent reason, so I fired up the system monitor, and it told me that it was draksnapshot-applet that was using the cycles. I do not know what this utility is doing or why it is running.

     

    Google has been little help on discovering what this is and what it does. There are only generic statements that it is doing "backups". What backups? Where? How?

     

    I do my own backups manually and do not want an automatic daemon doing that for me.

     

    I went into MCC=>System=>Shapshots, and it shows that snapshots are not enabled. And yet I get:

    I would like to understand what this utility is doing, and if I cannot find out, get rid of it.

  19. I did check that it is not muted. I toggled the mute on and off with no effect.

     

    I did not think to check another sound source. I will do that.

     

    I am not sure how to tell what sound system Amarok is using. From a hardware standpoint, there is only one sound system on the computer, a system that is embedded on the Mother board.

     

    I might have had my USB sound dongle hooked up when I installed the OS, I don't remember. I had to replace the MOBO when I had Mandy 2008.1 on the computer, and 2008 could not see the on-board sound system. So I had purchased a simple Rosewill USB card and I was using that. The Mandy 2010.2 sees my on-board sound system fine, so I have put the USB card in the drawer. I don't remember if it was hooked up when I installed the OS or not.

     

    All of the other media applications are using the on-board sound.

    Edit: I attempted to play a .wav file with Amarok and got no sound. So something else is wrong besides the codecs. VLC plays the same .wav file OK. I cannot find any setup parameters to indicate what backend Amarok is using. The desktop configure tool has a setting for all the sound apps, and I have already tried that with no change.

     

    Another update: Just for grins I plugged in my Roswill USB card to see if that would work. The light came on. The device was seen by USB:

    I plugged my headphones into the USB card. No sound. No sound from VLC on that device either. VLC still plays through the on-board sound.

  20. Thanks for the direction on getting rid of the wallet.

     

    I don't know about the repositories. I did a plain vanilla installation onto a new disk using the Mandriva 2010.2 One CD. After the installation I had it do all of the updates. Then I installed my apps from the repositories. I am hooked up to the following repositories:

    Non-free

    Non-free Updates

    PLF Free

    PLF Non-free

     

    I do not know which mirrors it is looking at. I presume that it left me pointing to the proper 2010.2 repositories. I says it is hooked to $MIRRORLIST

     

    Is there more to it than that?

     

    When I play the MP3 file, the Amarok sliding bar indicates that it is reading the file, but no sound comes out.

     

    When I play the same files with VLC, Audacity, and Kaffeine, I get sound.

  21. I have spent some time fooling around with VLC and found out that the hangup when deleting media from the playlist only happens when I use the skinnable version. When I use the plain old VLC it works fine. So that is my player for now. I will probably still use Kaffeine as well, but I now have a backup.
