  1. aRTee, you are one of the lucky people I guess.

For now, both my old Panasonic and Pioneer DVD-Rom drives would only read DVD-Rom and DVD-R, but not DVD+R. So the bitsetting feature is a life-saver in my case. I am going to burn the SuSE 9.2 DVD ISO tomorrow and will report how bitsetting performs under Linux. Hopefully it will be as good as on Windows.

  2. Well since Mandrake 10 OE is out and I got a fast FTP for ISO, I upgraded to Mdk 10 OE.

Now I can burn DVD+R, however couple things still stand out:

    1) My LiteOn LDW-401S is capable of 4X DVD+R writing speed, but K3b auto-detected it to burn at 2.5x for my 4X capable DVD+R, is there anything I can do to specify K3b to burn at 4X (there's a choice of 1X, 2X and Auto, but not 4X :( )?

Seems like it is a bug which is fixed in the latest version of K3b, according to aRTee's Mandrake 10.1 review:

One of the star applications of KDE, K3B, is even greater than before (and they fixed a bug that wouldn't let dvd+r's get burnt at the highest possible speed the drive and media combination was capable of). I know it actually says the selected burn speed doesn't matter when burning dvds, but it sure does.

Thanks aRTee for reporting this bug.

  3. Ok, I have come across the bitsetting feature (Book Type) of DVD+R burning.

    http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=0...=0&sid=2&aid=42

    http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/

    (Thru the command dvd+rw-booktype)

So, anyone has experience on changing Book Type of a DVD+R / DVD+RW to DVD-ROM under Linux? If I want to change the Book Type of a DVD+R, is it done before burning?

    Finally with some update.

The latest firmware for my Lite-On drive has enabled the bitsetting feature. Thumbs up to Lite-On for their commitment to customers.

I have tried it on Windows, and it works! With bitsetting (change booktype) to DVD-Rom, even many older DVD-Rom drives can read DVD+R now. I'll test if it works on Linux in a moment after I fix my kernel panic problem (or maybe after a re-installation) mentioned in another thread.

  4. System moon, the Samsung laptop, wouldn't read the dvd+r so I had to reburn the iso on a dvd-rw disc. I don't know if this has anything to do with bitsetting, but for a dvd-burner/reader from last year, I'd expect it to read dvd+r(w) discs without problem. Thumbs down for this Samsung laptop. Emphasis mine

I think bitsetting (to DVD-Rom) is required in order for older drives to read DVD+R. I just tried to burn a Mandrake 10.1 DVD ISO with bitsetting enabled and it is now readable in my old Panasonic DVD-Rom drive, which was unable to read any DVD+R before.

  5. Booting the Mandrake 10 CD and entering the 'rescue' command, I tried to restore the LILO after installing Win2k3 Evaluation edition. This time, however I was met with the Kernel panic message like this:

    resuming from /dev/hda5
    Resuming from device hda5
Kernel panic: Resume Machine unable to find supended-data signature ( - misspelled ?

This worked in the past for Mandrake 9.2 so I wonder if anyone has encountered this problem or know how to solve it. Thanks.

  6. Some tips to make it run smoother:

    http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Doom3/FPSVisuals.htm

    From a comment at LinuxGames.com:

"Make a text file called autoexec.cfg in your Doom3 'Base' directory and add:

    image_useCache - set to 1

    image_cacheMegs - 1/3 -14th system ram

    image_cacheMinK - minimum cache in K not Meg 2048

com_videoram - make sure this value is the ammount of video ram your card has

it won't add FPS, but it will be noticeably smoother.

the other commands on that site can help, but don't go overboard otherwise you'll lose some playing experience."

  7. Furthermore, I find 3D FPS boring and last, but not least: I suck at them! ;)

Oh, and I'm someone who falls asleep bored when watching thriller/horror movies, so I doubt the dark, scary, pixelly monsters would frighten me...

    Just completed the demo....

Well the game is really scary, but perhaps the sound has made it more so...

I don't think it's bored, but it is not very fun either....

Maybe I will wait for RTCW 2 then.

  8. That will be a good moment for Linux here

Just imagine how strong and big linux community can be in China.  :cheeky:

It's just that Linux it's not know here...not so much.

General consumer acceptance is harder, but corporate and developer acceptance is already there:

Yes, piracy crackdown initiated by BSA will only further the trend to move away to Linux, especially in China.

  9. > mohaa isn't final yet, spearhead will be out after mohaa is final. EA never gave

    > icculus the breakthrough source so that is not likely to be released for linux.

Hope EA will change their mind about Breakthrough because I want to get a box set of 3 games bundled together, once all the Linux clients are final.
