  1. > Please THINK. Thank you. Ah well, that does change the fact that Mdk is not supporting the latest as it used to be. Its release schedule in March and September is what makes it will miss X.org latest release (around the same time or a little earlier), as well as the latest GNOME release. Perhaps it is more stable than Fedora (that I'll need to verify it sometime), but Mandrake used to be the latest and greatest. Now it's not. The translation issue is understandable, but Mdk's release schedule makes it always later than Fedora (and even SuSE) to adopt the latest release of various packages (X.org, GNOME).
  2. Well Mandrake 10.1 missed KDE 3.3 and X.org R6.8... Mandrake used to be latest and greatest but it seems Fedora is more entitled to that term now. However, I know for a fact that the CJK input is vastly improved with m17n and a new XIM server SCIM, you can change the input language (eg. from Japanese to Chinese) on the fly with this new release!
  3. The first preview release of Firefox 1.0 is finally available: Three large new features — Live Bookmarks, the Find bar and a new plugin installer — have landed since 0.9, along with a host of critical bugfixes. http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=5271 As always you can grab it at the official page. Along with this first preview release is the launch of a series of marketing plan to promote Firefox to end users, start with the marketing website Spread Firefox. Spread Firefox to people you know! :D In addition, Thunderbird 0.8 and Mozilla 1.7.3 released with update and fixes: http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=5270 http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=5269
  4. Thanks a lot. This command also helps when you happen to have jerky sound for some reason. This fixes it.
  5. You would have to notice, the license for the free DVD toolkit in not transferrable.
  6. OpenGL 2.0 specification PDF is now available: http://opengl.org/documentation/opengl_current_version.html
  7. GeForce 6600 GT really kicks ass: http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2004q3/g...gt/index.x?pg=1 With excellent Linux driver, I doubt I'll look elsewhere. Note: 6600 GT AGP version will be coming in Novemeber.
  8. 72MB Ram, is it a memory combination of 32MBx2 + 4MBx2 ? Anyway, XFCE is more fitting with such limited memory resource.
  9. The 2D Radeon drivers (for R300-420) are merged into X.org latest release quickly, while it almost took 1-2 years later to have something like this happen in the XFree86.org era.
  10. To adjust font size for GTK-apps outside GNOME, you need to modify the file ~/.gtkrc-2.0 Add the following line: gtk-font-name="Sans 12" where Sans is the font name 12 is the font size For more detail, you can check out the last post in this discussion in Tips and Tricks: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=15102
  11. See if you can download it from the project page: (Look for the item 'RealPlayer 10 Final Release') https://helixcommunity.org/project/showfile...hp?group_id=154
  12. I contested whether it's really faster to search, but since you know the topic well it must be faster for you then. As for your point on 3000 hours online, I think it is just an individual case. The internet is full of repeating questions and answers on similar topic, like Gowator said it is sometimes better to help out each other. I probably won't mind answering repetitive questions if I know that topic well. Btw, I did search a bit but I thought I will get more straightforward answer with a post. Again thanks for the help from idud and Gowator.
  13. Thanks to idud and Gowator again. You saved me from a lot of trouble than going thru search results.
  14. It could be a driver issue, check out the ALSA snd-emu10k1 wiki for more info: http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=emu10k1
  15. Scribus 1.2 released, with much improved feature and font support. http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/...02/scribus.html http://www.scribus.org.uk/
  16. Install alsamixergui and see if it works: # urpmi alsermixergui
  17. Thanks Gowator for the easy answer. :)
  18. I have a question, how can I restore LILO (at the boot sector I suppose), after re-installing Windows XP (I know... :P it's only for my sister's computer)? Do I need to backup it on a floppy disk or something? Can it be done just by booting a Mandrake bootCD and enter some commands? Any suggestion is appreciated.
  19. SuSE 9.1 Personal ISO is free, while SuSE 9.1 Professional ISOs are not necessarily free; although I may see Novell has more intention to free those ISOs later.
  20. I guesss this is just circumstantial expression of a driver configuration issue, not enough to conclude the 3D driver quality or demand, if the ATi petition is any indication.
  21. Novell is giving away 10 GB of DVDs and CDs. Some of the included software are SuSE 9.1 Pro, SuSE Standard Server 9.0 and Novell GroupWise. Update on Aug 20, 2004: The offer was out of stock since early July, apparently Novell is offering it again, so get it while supplies last : http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=7614 http://www.novell.com/community/linux/order.php
  22. I also heard there are report of random lockups with certain chipset. In any case my experience with nVidia driver is stable 95% of the time. Although there were occassional glitches that required re-installation of the driver sometimes.
  23. We are getting close to 10,000 signatures! Now that means two things: 1) There are indeed many dual boot + migrated Linux desktop users. 2) Many ATi card owners would like to run Linux with better drivers.
  24. LinuxWorld: Taking on added dimensions Linus Torvalds launched Linux as a student project nearly 13 years ago, but now it's a staple of the information technology diet and a component of computing company strategies to get an edge over their competitors. These high-stakes plans were on display at LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in San Francisco: http://zdnet.com.com/2251-1110-5292854.html
