  1. Added helixplayer via "Install Software" from PLF. Modified Firebird. It is currently working. Thanks everyone!
  2. Went to the Mozilla site, clicked on plugins, clicked on Real, clicked on RPM link. Install software took care of the RPM. It's located in usr/local/Realplayer. And it doesn't work. I click on the Realplayer.bin execution file and nothing happens. I go into Firefox and tell it to use the .bin file to open .ram files.... nothing happens. I go into konsole and the following occurs: SCIM: im_module_init free(): invalid pointer 0x82e3938! /usr/bin/realplay: line 75: 9080 Segmentation fault $REALPLAYBIN "$@"
  3. I've tried everything. I've downloaded heaps of files from "Install Software" which appeared to be all the right codecs but nothing has happenned. I'm trying to listen to streaming audio from online radio stations as well as my favourite Radio station here in Australia (ABC Newsradio). Virtually all of these places have streaming for .ram (Real Audio) or .asx (Windows Media). When I click on the Windows media link, Firefox opens a new tab... and then does nothing. When I click the Real Audio link, the default application starts (Totem) which does nothing. When I have changed it to Xine or Noatun, the same nothing happens. I also downloaded XMMS. Same problem - except that when I click on the .ram link XMMS opens and then it asks me which file on my PC I would like to open. This is not user friendly stuff at all. What do I need to download so that Totem or Xine or XMMS immediately plays .ram streaming audio when I click on it?

  6. These have got to be two of the most useful toys in KDE. I used them quite a lot when I was on Mdk 9.1, Since migrating to 10.0 and 10.1, they disappeared from my list of toys. Then whilst perusing the "install software", I noticed a toys package for KDE that included them. So I downloaded it. With both Tea cooker and moonphase, all you do is open the program and they automatically appear on the panel at the bottom of the screen - that's what they did in 9.1. When I start them now, they do not appear at all... anywhere. When I go into the Gnome system monitor, however, I discover that they are running, but "sleeping". Is there any way to get these programs to run properly? I described my problem to my brother who runs KDE on Debian and he said that he had similar problems. I use KDE 3.2.
  7. Something really strange has just happened. I run KDE 3.2 as my default. However, I do enjoy Evolution, which is a Gnome program. So I run a mandrake update. Having just connected to ADSL I can now download large updates relatively quickly. In the Mandrake Update I found an update for Evolution, to upgrade it to 2.0.3 (bugfixes). So I download it. It downloads quickly, installation was fine etc. Then I hit my Start button (or whatever it is called - KDE button), and suddenly all the programs available have been stripped by about 80%. I can't even open the Konqueror browser for file maintenance. So I log out and log back in again in Gnome. All the programs are still there. I go back to KDE - they're still gone. On my desktop I have icons to open the Gnome system monitor and the desktop calculator. In both Gnome and KDE these icons have now changed to generic icons, and when I click on them it tells me that I can't access them. While downloading the Evolution 2.0.3 stuff, I also had to download some gnome stuff as well. I think this update has corrupted my KDE desktop somehow. I can't even do a Mandrake Update or Mandrake Control centre in KDE anymore. It has basically forced me to go to Gnome. Any ideas? ---- It fixed itsellf. I have no idea why. I just hope Central Services doesn't send its workmen around to find out why it fixed itself.
  8. All Fixed I just happened to have an ethernet card that I then installed. After about half a day of it still not working, I rang my ISP, who then informed me that my account had not been set up yet. So I am now typing this whilst on ADSL.
  9. Here: http://alloy.com.au/products/RTA100.htm halfway down the page it says : "Features: * Network users can share a single high-speed ADSL internet service * Blazing Bandwidth - up to a maximum of 8Mbps * Surf 'n Talk - a single telephone line supports ADSL and standard telephony useage * Online - all the time! ADSL provides a permanent Internet connection * Free ADSL Microfilter supplied - a required item for sharing ADSL and voice traffic on a single POTS line * USB or Ethernet Connection" The modem came with a USB cord and the set-up guide makes sure you know what a USB is. (The whole package obviously assumes I use Windows) How do I configure the USB port as a network device?
  10. Hi, I've just subscribed to Broadband, and I have everything I need - the Modem, two splitters (so I can have a phone line and answering machine on one line, and ADSL on the other) and all the cables I need. The modem connects into the back of my PC by a USB connector. Now with Mandrake, there is a "search for new hardware" that occurs during the booting process. It doesn't seem to have found it. Moreover, when I go into the Mandrake Control Centre, it identifies the modem only as "Unknown/others", with further information described as: Identification Vendor: ‎RTA100+ Description: ‎ Media class: ‎Data|Unused Connection Bus: ‎USB Bus PCI #: ‎1 PCI device #: ‎2 Vendor ID: ‎2325 Device ID: ‎5 Misc Module: ‎unknown The specs on the Modem can be found at: http://www.dynalink.com.au/products/specs/rta100_specs.htm and http://alloy.com.au/products/RTA100.htm and they say that they are compatable with Linux. The problem is obviously that my PC doesn't recognise the new USB connected hardware as an ADSL modem. I need it to recognise it! I think I also need to run PPPoE or whatever it is called.
  11. It takes me time to discover how things work. Only 9 weeks ago I discovered that I could add sources to something called URPMI and download and install programs. Before that, I was pretty much trapped into what Mandrake 9.1/10.0 could offer. So anyway, the other day I discovered that I could download a flash player for my MOZILLA 1.7 browser. I did so, and then I was able to finally play flash animations after 18 months without them. Not really missed I can tell you, but there were some websites that I couldn't access because of it. I had no problems in watching Flash animation in Mozilla. Then yesterday I finally discovered a URPMI source with Firefox 1.0, which I then duly downloaded. I was impressed with how it asked me if I wanted to shift my Mozilla bookmarks and preferences across which made the changeover so much easier. But then Firefox would freeze up. I went into my Gnome system monitor and saw that Mozilla-Firefox-bin was now "Sleeping" and another program "SWF-Play" had been opened but was sleeping too. I killed the SWF-Play and Firefox returned to normal. I then did a Google search for SWF play and found out that it was short for "Shock Wave Flash". Further tests revealed that whenever I visited a page with a flash animation, Firefox would always freeze up. Killing SWF-play in my Gnome system monitor would then unfreeze everything - but of course there would be no flash animation visible. Any further websites that I visited with Flash would then freeze firefox again. One more thing - sometimes when I have problems with programs it is usually viewable through the Gnome system monitor: A 100% CPU usage with very little happening until I then close the relevant program or web page. With this particular problem, however, the CPU is not running at 100%. Firefox is frozen when it hits a Flash animation, but the CPu is not over-active. Any ideas?
  12. Thanks everyone. I downloaded it when I did my weekly Mandrakelinux update - nice surprise to see it there!
  13. I don't know how to find these files if I do have them. I checked file:/lib and they aren't there. (I have tried the search feature in the Konquerer File browser but it never finds anything)
  14. Almost everytime I put a DVD into my DVD player, Totem starts automatically after the player identifies it. That's fine. Unfortunately every time Totem starts this way, it has what i can only describe as "The Blue Screen of Death". The DVD screen, which is supposed to show the menu and the movie etc, is just blue. Sound comes out - I can even hear dialogue when the movie is playing - but the TBSOD means no vision can be seen. I have tried opening Totem before putting the DVD into the player. Same problem - BSOD. My solution is quite simple. As soon as Totem starts, I close it. I then open it again and get the standard Totem screen. I then select "Play DVD" and everything works fine from that point on. I would, however, prefer it if the damn program works flawlessly!
  15. Hi. I run Mdk 10.1 with KDE 3.2. My preferred email client is Evolution, which served me well when I was with Mandrake 9.1 and 10.0. Now that I've upgraded, Evolution 2.0.1 seems to be quite annoying. I do have a quibble about there not being a "front page" that has a summary of things like tasks, calendar dates and inbox status (the Evolution in 10.0 had this, as does Microsoft Outlook). But the major problem is this: When I am not connected, I sometimes need to compose an email that is then kept sitting in the inbox until I dial up again. This is because I only have one phone line and we need to keep it open obviously! The problem is that when you are composing an email while off-line, after about 3 minutes, Evolution crashes. According to the Gnome system monitor, evolution falls "asleep" - it is still running, but I can't access it at all. The email that is being typed cannot be restored. My poor wife had typed half an email 5-6 times before she almost killed me complaining about Linux and how things were so much better with Windows (and even Mandrake 10.0). When we are online, however, emails can quite easily be written. Can anyone help?
  16. After nearly six years of internet surfing from Australia, I have to admit that I STILL can't remember the time difference between my local time zone and UTC. I would really like to have UTC time displayed on my screen, but also have the local time displayed as well (preferably in larger font than UTC). Is this possible? I run Mandrake 9.1 (presently) and use KDE, though I don't know which version which probably means that I use the default version for Mdk 9.1. This would be really useful
  17. All I want to do is download the new bios onto a floppy disk and flash it after rebooting. Why is this so difficult under Linux? Surely there is a simpler way. BTW - I purchased the m/b a few weeks ago
  18. I am working here on a P2-350. I have a Gigabyte GA-6BXC motherboard which, according to the users manual, can handle anything from a Celeron 233 to a P3-650. Since second hand P3s were coming down in price, I decided to purchase one on Ebay. Before I did all this I found a few remarks across the internet that P3-650s didn't really work on them. Armed with this piece of info, I purchased on Ebay in Australia a P3-600E, 600E/256/100/1.65v. It has a very large and ugly unpowered heatsink. I have Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs 14th edition which told me that all I needed to do was take the old processor out, put the new one in and make sure the switches match what I put in. So that is what I did (On the GA-6BXC, SW2 for the 350mhz is off|off|on|on. For the 600Mhz, it is on|on|on|off. SW1 for 100Mhz bus is off|off|off|off which remains unchanged) So did it work? No. I turn the PC on and it just sits there. Even the screen doesn't come on. Potential reasons are: 1) 3yr old son damaged CPU when he opened the package. 2) CPU was DOA. 3) I staticized it when I was installing it. 4) I'm doing something wrong. Before I begin blaming my supplier, I'd like to cover all my bases. One thing that bothers me is that the Intel Chipset 440X on the Gigabyte motherboard comes up and says someething about being configured for a P2 chip whenever the PC starts up - you know, when it says "Award Bios", "memory check" etc etc. I went into the bios and I couldn't find anything to help me about changing CPUs. All this might be solved by changing my Bios. But that is another story - check out that link to see my problems in that area (Can't install 40gb HDD) Grumble grmuble
  19. Well that Bios thing was a whole lotta nothing - ie a failure. Perhaps I didn't give enough information. All I have on my small hard drive is Linux Mandrake 9.1. I don't have any DOS at all. It is my assumption that .exe files can ONLY BE EXECUTED in Dos or Windows. My Flash Bios file is an .exe file, and so was the DR DOS file i also downloaded. Feeling rather confused and hopeless I put the floppy in and rebooted, and was told the disk was not a system disk. So - can .exe files (including the Bios flash) be run and executed from a Linux boot disk? If not, how can I get a working copy of a DOS boot disk so I can boot up in DOS and then flash the Bios? Arg... i'm getting really frustrated at this process. Check out my other problem in my new topic - I can't install a P3 processor even though the Motherboard info says I can. :
  20. Many Apple logies people, it started with King Arthur and got worse. BTW AJ - I live in Newcastle, NSW. (hence neil in oz) My M/b is actually a GA-6BXC but you're right I think the problem is still the same. So it look like this is my course of action. I'll download DR DOS and save the Bios onto the same Floppy, then boot tio the A: drive to DOS and then expose myself illegally... er, I mean "Flash"... and then hope my motherboard doesn't die a horrible death. I'll let you all know how it works out. Thanks for your help everyone, it's actually quite hard for a 35 year old hardware newbie to learn new tricks. I hope one day to even make my own web page or even learn some programming! See what Linux can do by stretching people's minds(apart from, in my case, making really bad jokes)?
  21. Some replies are due: Arthur, King of the Britons: I'm not a Linux Fundamentalist so using DOS isn't really a problem for me. The problem is that I have no DOS disks around! And you will be able to tell the limit of my geekiness by the following comment: "You mean that DOS isn't just a Microsoft product?". Well folks, I learned something today.... Saraceni: It is at the "detect Hard drives" section of the Bios setup that I have the problem - it just doesn't recognise it. Australian Toilet: Yes it is a WD! I'll try it again, but I'm fairly certain that I've already attempted your suggestion. Nothing like trying again... Hemmerology: "Well I've learned something else today folks..." I'll look into it! By the way... when my Maxtor 4gb has been selected master and the WD 40gb as slave (with the jumper pin in AJ), the autodetect mechanism in bios finds the 4gb okay, but stops when it comes to "Primary slave". And I mean stop. The whole thing just freezes up. I have to press reset to get the PC going again.
  22. OKay, to deal with all your replies... Gowator - yes I have tried to put the 40gb as Master and have disconnected the 4gb. This didn't work. DragonMage - The possibility of a DOA Hard drive is a real possibility. It is fairly new, though. I did, however, have it delivered in the mail. CannonFodder - Ditching the 4gb is one of my goals, but I need to copy everything on it onto the 40gb First!!! I am also rebuilding my old Acer P2-266 (now with a 333) and I need a Hard Drive for that as well. I will try your suggestion, though. aRTee - I'll attempt this one too. If it is the Bios, can anyone tell me how to Flash it without using DOS? (I live in Australia, so ordering a new BIOS chip and chip removal tool is quite expensive compared to all you rich Americans! Although not until the US dollar collapses in the next few months)
  23. Jib2 Your solution worked! Thanks so much. It took about 15 seconds to start OpenOffice. The pspfontcache file was about 1.5mb and now, after erasing it and starting Open Office again, was about 11kb. Will wait until Mdk 10.0 (individual) comes out for 1.1.1 Thanks again!
  24. I posted a few weeks ago regarding this matter and thanks for all your comments. I eventually did find the little jumpers for both the Hard Drives - my current 4gb and my new 40gb. For some reason, however, the BIOS can't seem to recognise the 40gb. I have put the jumper in "Master" and disconnected my 4gb. I have put it on "Slave" and had my 4gb on "Master". I have put it on "Master" and put the 4gb on "Slave". I have switched the drives around in their bays so that the connectors were swapped. I have disconnected the CD-ROM drive so the 40gb can use the cable instead. All to no avail. Everytime I get into Bios, and whether I put it on "Auto" or "Normal" or "LBA" the Hard drive detection comes up with a big fat 0. I'm tempted to believe that the Bios needs to change. It is a Gigabyte GA6-BXC Rev 1.9 board manufactured in 1998. The Hard Drive was manufactured in February 2004. Any thoughts?
