  1. My PC has 384mb RAM. When I open the Gnome System Monitor, it tells me exactly how much memory my PC is using. At this present moment in time I am using the following memory: Used Memory: 234Mb of 377mb Used Swap: 118mb of 500mb This situation occurs almost every day - obviously with different amounts of memory used. Why is it that Swap is being used when there is more than enough RAM available? Is there any way to change my PC to ensure that RAM is used first before Swap?
  2. Solved - no thanks to you lot! It was a simple problem - I had removed the System Tray applet from the bottom panel. As soon as I put it back on the panel, Teacooker and Moonphase and other KDE goodies came back. Here's how I did it: 1. Right click on bottom panel 2. Click on "Add"---> "Applet"---> "System Tray" 3. Go to the start menu and click on Teacooker and/or Moonphase 4. The icons appear in the System Tray I removed a number of items from the System Tray that I don't use - Korganizer and others. You right-click on them and click "quit". It will then ask you if you want it taken off the start-up menu. I'm actually not mad at all. :D I have been helped enormously by this forum in the past. Keep it up guys!
  3. Sorry guys but I should've posted that I had found the location before you replied. Yeah - I clicked on the Easy-URPMI link at the top of the page. I'm now in the process of downloading 277mb of updates! Thanks very much Arctic, you pointed me in the right direction. Much appreciated. Neil Cameron http://one-salient-oversight.blogspot.com/
  4. Thanks for the info. Can you give me the addresses?
  5. I rely on using Mandrake Update to ensure that my PC is running smoothly and secure. For the last 3 months or so, the updates have dried up. Everytime I use Mandrake Update, there are no updates listed. I'd like to believe that Mandrake/Mandriva is now so damn good that it has reached perfection and no more updates are needed. The realistic side of me, however, smells a rat. I can only think of two realistic possibilities: 1) That I have somehow stuffed up the updating (mainly via adding/removing some urpmi links) 2) That Mandriva, with their new corporate thinking, no longer supports free updates and has therefore told us to do the darn thing ourselves. Any help?
  6. This is really annoying. Can someone help me? I have had this problem now for 3-4 months at least. It occurs usually while I am running Firefox. Since I have multiple tabs open I sometimes need to close them using the Red "x" at the top right hand corner of the browser (the one that closes the tabs). As my mouse arrow goes up there, the entire screen disappears as I then move to Dektop no.3 (I always have Firefox open in desktop no.2). Eventually I worked out the problem - something about my mouse gesture moving up and to the right hand side of the screen tells the computer to change desktops. I experimented with this and found that if I kept doing it I would eventually cycle through all of my desktops (A total of 5). Further experimentation showed that if I do a gesture of up and to the left, I cycle backwards. I changed something the KDE control center that I thought might make a difference but it didn't: System --> KHotKeys --> Gestures Setting --> Disable mouse gestures globally (crossed) Any ideas? I run KDE 3.2.3
  7. BWHA HAH HAH HAH! I HAVE THE POWER TO RULE THE WORLD!!! It's just a matter of modifying the unzipped file. I added 80000 to the "Researched" column in a text editor, then saved the file. Then rather than re-zip the file, I simply loaded the file as is (as civgame-3850m.sav). Boom. I am now on Future Tech 32. Soon the world will feel the wrath of neilinoz
  8. I would like to know how to cheat at Freeciv. Specifically, I would like to know you can modify the .sav files so that I can give myself extra technology bonuses. I have searched the internet high and low and there seems to be nothing around to help me. I would have thought that this could be achieved in the Freeciv server command line but nothing I have read about helps. Today I managed to unzip the .sav file. I found the information on my civilization, bumped up the technology thingy to "50" and then tried to rezip it up. Once it had been saved I then loaded it into the server and... The server crashed and turned off. I'd better explain the reasons for my shame... When I used to play Civ2 in my Win98 days I often would set the conditions to extreme (maximum amount of AI, maximum difficulty, massive barbarians, no huts) but then grant myself modern technology so that my Mech Inf units could ward off the barbarian hoardes and Shaka Zulu as I expanded outwards. Of course I was never good enough to win the game on my own merits... so I would cheat and have a great time. I would like to do the same with Freeciv.
  9. And it was... I am now typing this in Firefox. I guess the lesson to be learned from this is to have Mozilla or another browser installed "Just in Case"...
  10. Found this at https://do-not-add.mozilla.org/extensions/m...numpg=10&id=433 ___________________ Developer Comments: *** WARNING *** Do not use Firefox's autoupdate mechanism to update Flashblock! This will not work, and some users have reported chrome corruption. To update Flashblock, you must manually uninstall it following the instructions on our website before reinstalling it. 11. And the process for doing this is...?
  12. I haven't done this one yet. The reason is that I sort of cottoned on to the idea that it might be an extension that was causing a problem. So what I did was that when it managed to work yesterday, I uninstalled all the extensions with the idea of installing them again once everything had been fixed.
  13. Didn't work. Still hung up

  15. Firefox has frozen on me - I'm typing this out of Mozilla 1.7.2 It happened 3 days ago. I was downloading some extension updates - I can't remember which ones but I do have tabbrowser, download manager tweak, stumble upon and nuke anything. It has worked a couple of times. But most of the time it sits there with a blank screen. According to my Gnome system monitor, it is "Sleeping". I hope this hasn't anything to do with the security fault. I can't remember which version it is, but I'm fairly sure that it is 1.2 or 1.0.2 or something. What can I do? Update: It seems that it is partially running. When Firefox appears the screen is basically all white except for some toolbars. When I click on the toolbars, nothing happens though. But when I Right click on the screen, I can do things like reload the page or examine the source and all the other things that you can do when you rightclick. But still no image on the screen, and the toolbars don't work still.
  16. Actually I do know that the internet connection and IRC are extensions BUT they are not able to be open in tabs. Thanks for your help.
  17. I have a number of suggestions for Firefox suggestions. Where can i go?: 1. An option to have a clock somewhere visible on the browser that is NOT dependent upon the system clock but upon the ISP server - thus showing time in UTC if you choose. 2. An ability to adjust the fonts on individual web sites, rather than having one chosen font for all web sites. 3. An IRC chat that you can have open in one of the tabs. 4. Internet connection stats that are visible in an open tab. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  18. Further research on Google has proven that there is no simple way to import. For posterity it goes like this: 1. Download and install Thunderbird. Don't test it yet by receiving emails - so do the following off line and not while Thunderbird or Evolution is running. 2. Go into ./evolution and find the two biggest files, which should be "inbox" and "sent" 3. Highlight the files, right click and copy. 4. Open ./thunderbird 5. Edit -> Paste. (There shouldn't be any conflicts here, but if there are then you probably received some email on Thunderbird before moving the files over. Just click on "erase" and your email should get removed by the larger file from Evolution) 6. Open Thunderbird and your inbox and sent items should be there. 7. If you have multiple inboxes then you should be intelligent enough to work out how to put them over as well. As for moving the Address list from Evolution to Thunderbird, there are some complex ways of doing it. This was my preferred option, which is probably the simplest: 1. Open Evolution 2. Click on the address book so that it opens. 3. Press print and print the addresses out. 4. Close Evolution and Open Thunderbird 5. Click on "Address Book" 6. Place the printed copy of your address book next to your keyboard. 7. Type the information from the printed sheet into the Thunderbird address book. 8. If your address book is large, make sure you have some chocolate nearby to help you with the process.
  19. Thankyou Dragonmade for the rpm link - I was able to download Thunderbird properly and it is working. I did try the rpm that tymark suggested, but it didn't work. Now - another question: How do I import all my emails and address book info from Evolution into Thunderbird? The "import" button does not seem to help at all, and there is precious little in the way of info that I have found yet. No RTFM for me I'm afraid. It goes like this: Tools -> Import -> Mail and then only offers "Communicator 4.x" as the only thing to import.
  20. I'm sick of Evolution. 1.4 was good but when I updated to Mandrake 10.1 I got stuck with 2.0. It's been a disaster. It is nowhere near as usable as 1.4 and I have this really annoying problem when writing emails which is that if I make a spelling mistake and correct it straight away, my backspace key removes the second last letter I have typed first, putting the cursor between the 3rd last and the last letter typed. So I have decided to go with Thunderbird. I know Evolution is an Outlook-type and has calendar and a to do list... but the fact is that this feature of 2.0 was nowhere near as nice as 1.4. I also know that Thunderbird is an email client. So I've downloaded it and arked it. Now what? The website doesn't seem to have any instructions on what to do with it and how to place which files where. I would have loved a URPMI version, but the only one that is slated on my "Istall software" is version 0.8. Is there any URPMI link that I can go to to get Thunderbird 1.0 - one that does not require me to pay $E$E$E to get in?
  21. I recently (ie today) discovered that rather than right-clicking on a link and then telling it to open a new tab, that I can click my mouse scroll button on the link and it automatically opens a new tab. It's quite neat. The problem is that I accidentally "mouse scroll clicked" on an image file (jpg) which was not a link. However, the Browser then redirected itself to a particular corporate website. The problem seems similar to that described in a Fedora Forum Please try to reproduce this. Hover the arrow over an image in Firefox. Scroll-click on the image. Firefox should then redirect you to a particular corporate website. (note of explanation for those confused. I have a mouse that has a scrolling wheel in between the right and left click buttons. Mine can click down as well.) MORE ISSUES. I tried it again, but it the browser went to the Fedora forum above rather than the Corporate Website. I will restart my system and attempt to reproduce the problem again. ... And it didn't work this time. I feel a bit confused, but obviously there needs to be a number of pre-existing things to have occurred first before it works. If people can please mention below if it works. Try it just after you've started your PC, and then try it after you've been browsing for an hour or so.
