Yeah! that's the poing, I did it in the past, but my BIOS doen't give me the option to enable/disable this sort of stuff, I will check compaq's site in order to see what's going on.

When I press del and enter in BIOS the only possibilityis to setup booting device order (if I'm not wrong)... But I will check it again....

Still very hard to understand the meaning of all these lines....

In the aumix I've adjusted the volume and in the Kmix I was not able to do it, cause there weren't any sliders, it was completely empty, no options in Kmix window.

The xmms has a bunch of configuration in the preferences tab and I've tried to adjust it according to what was recommended in another post, but with no success, I've decided to run xmms/mnt/cdrom comand that worked well and recognized the cd, but unfortunately I haven't gotten any sound.

toaderxxix , good luck at your new businees. Great initiative to incentivate people to know linux, if I had been introduced to linux before, nowadays, probably I would be in a better situation.

Well people, finally I succeeded in installing 3 packages of alsa (alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-utils), according to the recommendation of alsa quick-intall steps.Thanks zero0w for the hints to install development packages.

It would be very simple if the procedures to have everything here working well were only alsa packages installations!!! After a step by step installation procedure, the Extigy SB is already plugged in the computer and thanks GOD It hasn´t frozen the computer as before. :lol:

After the installation I inserted the modules into the kernel space typing "modprobe snd-usb-audio;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss and restarted the computer. I've checked if the the sound card was detected running "sndconfig" and I was able to listen to the Torvalds sound sample through the speakes attached to my SB Extigy as everything was working properly. I've checked if the aumix and mixer volume was properly adjusted and tried to listen to a CD, using Kscd. Unfortunately, I was only able to hear a very low volume sound comming from the internal computer's speakers.

I've been in the MDK control center to check the sound hardware configuration and here is the information out there:

As you can see, I'm just a linux newbie who is trying to become a ex windows user and facing a bunch of problems with Linux (what i consider to be normal) concerning my external usb Creative SB Extigy.

Indeed at this time I don't have the very deep knowledge as I could notice you really do, but could it be possible to count with your help to give me a clear explanation of what are the possibilities of having this sound card working properly? What is going on with my computer? Why does it freeze whenever I plug the SB Extigy in it (during booting time or with the system already loaded).

Do I have to know basic compiling issues to have this device working with Linux?

I have MDK 9.1 installed on my Laptop Compaq Presario 1700, everything was already recognized by the system: ethernet card, internal sound card, Usb Zip Drive Iomega, Usb Mouse and scanner, but this f****** card completely freezes my computer.

Could you help me? I've seen zero0w's "cake recipe" to compile source files to make SB working properly. That's what I need but, are these steps applicable to my situation? Again, why the computer freezes?

I'm back working on the sound blaster. Have just downloaded the alsa drivers and reading the instruction to proceed with its installation.

The scanner is already working properly, but the key problem is stil with the sound blaster external usb device....

Whenever I attach the USB creative extigy sound blaster (during boot time or with linux already loaded) the computer freezes. I cannot do anything, a forced boot must be proceeded if I need to bring the system to the previous stage, ie: working.

The key point is: there's no sense to run the sndconfig, if whenever the plug is attached to the computer, in order to make the system capable of recognizing the new sound card, it freezes. I'm running the latest MDK version on my laptop!!!! The original sound card indeed is recognized, but how to disable it? It's not logic to assume that the system is going to recognize both cards. Don't you agree with me? I've downloaded the latest updates including the one that is related to USB bug issue.

Please, consider that I'm a new linux user, I've been visiting and reading all the mentioned links and it seems to be quite complex to understand what exactly I have to do when I read all the steps in the advanced linux sound. (recompile Kernel, Ez USB Devices, GPL, You must turn on the sound support soundcore module, etc). It's not sth self-explanatory.

Of course I consider the fact that I do have to pay the price for having been using Windows and MACOS for the last 10 years, but sometime it's frustating when you are obliged to face so many difficulties....

Unfortunately I will have to come to the conclusion that the problem is between the user and the machine. It's frustrating to assume this .... but what to do??? Insist???

Do it have any basic and more objective steps to be followed? I mean, like a cake recipe?

Thank you all for the inputs. The zip drive was already reconized, just following Pzatch steps. (and now investigating and studying how to "mount" it on my desktop )

The next challange will be the sound card, I'm very anxious to listem to some mp3s as I was used with Windows. I hope to succeed.

The scanner will be the third priority.

As soon as I get home (in the office at this moment) I'll let you know the news.

Just a question: Do I have to conclude that if linux mandrake 9.1 doesn't recognize my usb zip drive and sound card, it's going to be impossible to have them installed unless I acquire a deep linux expertise to make them work?

The bios issue was already done, but as I told you, when a plug the sound card and restart the computer for the booting process it gets stucked in the "finding modules dependencies" and if I type "ctrl C" it stucks in the finding new hardware" line.

Ok. I intend to be a ex window user, if I have to be an expert to be able to install this sort of stuff in order to keep the same things I have with window XP on my partitioned HD (mp3 player, SONY Digital Camera, sound blaster, zip drive, scanner, USB hubs, video editors, etc), I will be.

After many attempts to have linux on my compaq presario 1700, at this moment, I'm surfing on the web, listening some MP3 with the internal sound card, etc, I would like to expand the pleasure to have this system in my computer so I would like to know if it's possible to have the following devices installed :

1 ) an USB sound blaster extigy

2 ) an USB zip drive IOMEGA 750 Mb

3 ) an USB genius scanner

If positive, what would be the easiest way considering I'm a linux new user?

I've noticed that plug and play procedures don't work, when I plug the sound blaster in the computer it hangs and stops working. During booting time when the OS looks for new hardware the computer gets frozem?

Does anyone here could help me?

Thank you very much for your kindly attention. My Computer is a Pentium III 866Mhz. (a genuine compaq presario 1700T). Unfortunately, as a linux new user, I've installed the whole OS for more 5 times and at this moment I am in front of my laptop, just writing down these words on the internet with Galeon 1.3.3 browser. (The OS recognized my COMPAQ 10_100 Mini PCI Ethernet NIC, what made me very glad....

There are some minor points that I will have to look up:

Screen / monitor: when loggin out to change user, it flickers and suddenly gets stable, I am not sure if it is a problem of screen resolution or monitor, I will have to check.

Modem : not recognized , it is not important

Keyboard: despite being US International, it is not OK, backspace doesnt work.

Soud Blaster Creative: not sure if the system will recognize

Zip Drive 750 Iomega: not sure if the system will recognize

Genius Scanner: not sure if the system will recognize

Actually I do not know what happened, problably a wrong choice in configuration steps during installation process. That is the point, what really causes the problem? Which problem? Get stucked during booting time? type control c ... ok it worked, but after this there were a bunch of problems that I went to a bookstore and got a linux book for dummies, what at least gave some offline support.

Now I am sure to be ready for being introduced to the linux world. It is a pleasure to be on the same boat with all of you who has left any imput here.

I've alrealdy tried starting in failsafe but it hasn't been working at all. It gets stuck at the same "welcome to mandrake 9.1 linux" black screen point.

I do get a prompt to choose between windows and linux.

The computer gets stuck since this message appears during booting time:

That's it, despite having linux installed on it, I'm not able to start the OS.

That's the message I get during booting time to run mandrake 9.1 on my computer. (compaq pressario 1700T with windows xp pro installed NTFS)

Installation process was fine (no error messages, all hardware devices recognized and automatic HD partition), but unfortunately up to now I haven't been able to run the OS.

That's the second time I try to have linux installed on my computer, the first attempt was 1 week ago with Red Hat distribution, but unfortunately it didn't recognize my network adapter (compaq 10_100 mini pci ethernet nic).

Does anyone here know what is going on? Please, give me some help.
