  1. Have not use Mandrake Linux since 8.2. Went to RedHat (8.2 than 9) after that lured by the simpler Gnome based Bluecurve desktop and nice lookign fonts. For the past year I have been running Windows again. I was disheartened when RedHat drop its desktop line and did not feel like going to Fedora which sounds like a beta forever. Anyway, I picked up a copy of Mandrake 10. Was curious to see how it stack up... and I was amaze.d. I have a separate hard drive to install Linux on so I told the intaller to use available free space and installed the default options (I forgot whether I selected desktop or something). Instalation took all of ten minutes.... WOW. Used to remember when Installing it took 45 minutes. Went with the default to see what it look like and am very happy with the default install. Not too cluttered, just a good selection of programs. Had to add Mozilla (preferred browser and kppp for my dial up, but that was a breeze too). 20-25 minutes from intall to the time I am typing this message. Am glad to be back... and it looksl ike Linux is really desktop ready.
  2. I guess I am a bit worried it might be too cuttin edge since now its a test bed... but may go with that. I still has Bluecurve =)
  3. Thanks. I guess I should give the latest Mandrake a look first. 8.2 was the last one I really used.
  4. Read a few reviews and they sounded promising. Decided to try one out (found a Internet Cafe that has them)... but my concern is more concerning community support, available downloads and the like. Always found Mandrake a bit too busy for me (I liked the simpler RedHat Bluecurve combo)... but on the other... other distro's may have problems in terms of community support or add-ons. The reviews had no quite covered that. Was hoping for feedback from users who may have tried it and what they liked or did not like about it. What worries me is I often see Xandro's mentioned in the same reviews as Lindows (eeekkk).
  5. Been gone from Linux for some time.... ever since RedHat pulled the plug on their free desktop version. Looking for a nice light and simple distro. Am using Xandros now at a Cafe and it seems pretty good. Is it any good or should I just go back to Mandrake (funny place to ask this).
  6. 587.1... no no no no no no no no

  8. I don't like what they have been doing lately, but I guess they know what they are doing. "The Raleigh, N.C.-based company had net income of $4.1 million, or 2 cents per share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2004, which ended Nov. 30. That compared with $214,000 for the year-earlier quarter and matched an average of analyst estimates compiled by First Call. Red Hat's revenue grew 36 percent to $33.1 million, surpassing the estimates by Merrill Lynch's Jason Maynard, who expected $31.4 million, and W.R. Hambrecht's Sameer Nadkarni, who expected $31.8 million. " http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticl...p?searchid=5855
  9. It will be a cold day in hell before that happens. Well, or the day Penguins learn to fly.
  10. The Cornell and Virginia teams should apply for their own trademark over the Fedora name in response to Red Hats attempt to usurp the use of the name. Big business meets open source.
  11. Well, not really. I am a lawyer and do use it for work, but it is for the PC at my home. In the Office we use bluescreen hell... I mean, Windows 98. Will probably go with Mandrake or SuSe (or sitck it out with Windows 2000).
  12. Looks like this distro has good support. There is even a NForce2 driver on Nvidia's site for the recently released 9.0 release.
  13. Oh hell, how bad can it be if I mess it up :) From one clock crazy penguin to another... thanks.
  14. I guess what I want to ask is there some way to install Fedora using only the stable stuff.
  15. Somehow, this sounds like its going to be difficult :(
  16. Now I am getting really confused.
  17. Looks like I may need to get a new motherboard.
  18. I was kind of hoping that since the NForce2 boards had been out for some time now... it would be a simple install and the drivers would be built into the distro. Well, I guess I can try the 9.1 drivers and see how they go. Will still have the Windows on HD0 and Linux on HD1 (since I will be dual booting), so a bad install wont be a disaster. As for the lan... well I am on dial up anyway :) ...wait a minute :( :( :(
  19. I hope he is referring to NForce2 drivers :) If you are, what motherbaord are you using Dakelve?
  20. Am on Windows 2000 right now. Have been ever since I my current motherboard.
  21. Anyine try ML9.2 with an ATI 9100 card?
  22. Does Mandrake Linux 9.2 already have built in driver for NForce 2 Ultra400 motherboards and ATI 9100 video cards? If the 9100 drivers are included, do they have 3D support? Nvidia only has NForce2 drivers for 9.1 listed on their site. As for the video card, the manufacturer of my card (Sapphire) only provides Windows drivers. ATI has 9100 drivers for Linux though :) Thanks in advance.
