  2. I have kind of given up on getting 3D support for now, unless ATI releases a new driver.
  3. Looking at Mandrake now, it looks like it is ready to make a go for mainstream users Windows. Supermount, better fonts a simplified and rational "Start" menu all creat a look and feel that shoudl be pleasing and familair enough to most Windows users. I think Mandrake Linux should seriously consider coming out with a 1 CD ISO which will have the same files (+ a few essentailslike Mozilla and KPPP) which form part of their defualt workstation/desktop install. It should be a simpler ML10 than ML10 Official: 1) The configuration screens available should be inegrated and the available options reduced. If it is not important, hide it or put it under a advance section. 2) KDE should be the only desktop environment available (or Gnome, but only one). 3) It should have 3D acceleration enable by default for Nvidia and ATI cards (I know this one is tricky). I think that it is still a bit to busy for the average user (though I like it much better now at 10 than I did in 8.2... which is why I went to RedHat and its bluecurve desktop) and the 3-5CD's it comes in are probably a bit intimidating for most. All in all a little more Xandros, Lycoris and Lindows in Mandrake =) They could even call it Mandrake XP Home Edition (just kidding).
  4. I installed LM sensors and was monitoring my CPU temps. I noitced that it was running 3-4C hotter than normal. I decided to compare Windows XP with Mandrake Linux 10 idle temps, and it appears that Mandrake runs about 2-3C hotter than Windows XP. Has anyone noticed or confirmed this?
  5. Actually, everything went back to normal after the reinstall.
  6. Welll, my ML10 install was just 2 days old so I backed-up and reinstalled. Lookign at the available fonts now a lost a bunch of them, even the font used by the OO GUI. I did not upgrade anything before the loss of the fonts.
  7. Well you have a point. It is much more stable than 95, 98, 98SE or ME. It is not to far from Win2K as near as I can tell. As a long time 98SE user, Win2K seems more familiar to me. If you are not into PC's, WinXP would reallty be a great help for you. It is very user friendly. That is something that I don't appreciate much, but something I acknowledge is important. If you have been using a PC for a long time... WinXP runs fast enough and is pretty stable.
  8. I seem to have lost Nimbus Roman No. 9 (and maybe a few others too) in OpenOffice. Anyway I can restore the OpenOffice fonts, or do I need to reinstall ML10? Only thing I did lately was to try to install the proprietary ATI drivers. Could that have messed things up?
  9. Yup, Windows 2000 is a pretty good OS. I don't remember it crashing the year I had it installed. Why I upgraded to XP, I will never know (since the only impovements I have noticed are graphical).
  10. Lemme think about this one for awhile :o Gaming: Yup, I used too...
  11. I better read up first on recompiling Kernels. I did it before with RedHat I think (kernel update?). Wanted to get Wolfenstein, Tux Racer and maybe even Neverwinter Nights running on Linux, but if I cannot get 3D working right now it is not a major problem since I do have a Windows XP partion. My other games (altough am not big into games anymore): Strike Fighter, Battle of Britain, Mig Ally, European Air War, Fly! II, SWAT3, Operation Flashpoint and Steel Beast (Only NWN and SWAT 3 are actually installed). Have not really bought ny new games in the past year or so (starting to loose interest)... so I may drop Windows in a bit even if I cannot get 3D working on Linux.
  12. Thanks fissy. Motherboard is a NForce 2 Ultra 400.
  13. I am afraid you both lost me :( A nice chap over at LinuxISO gave me the following information: Looks like I might be out of luck :(
  14. Well... installed Kernel_source and making some headway.... still no go though.
  15. Tried reinstallign again. Wel l it works but no 3D acceleration. I figure my problem is: When I try to do this (as root) it tells my permission denied :( Sigh
  16. Strange... 1024x768 became 1280x1024... anway reinstalled and this time just chose the default options for all. All is working fine but my glxgears actually slowed down :(
  17. Well here goes... If you do not see me back for a bit... you know what happened :)
  18. I just finnished downlaoding the ATI driver and noticed that it is an RPM. Do I have to .rpm -Uh --force <ati_package_name>.rpm or can I just double click the thing =)
  19. ral

    AMD or Intel

Have used both: AMD K6-2 350MHz; AMD Duron 1.0 (@1.4GHz), AMD XP1700+ Palomino, AMD 1700+ T-Bred (@2.083MHz) and XP2100+ (@2170MHz). Intel P166, Intel PIII 500 (Katmai), Intel PIII 550E (@754MHz). Don't really like one better than the other. I just got more AMD's because they are cheaper, so I voted AMD.
  20. Checked out the ATI install instructions here: First thing I want to confirm is that this instructions are correct? Next thing I wanted to confirm is the Mandrake 10 uses XFree 4.3 by defualt. I am pretty sure the anser is yes (just remember that old blacnk screen I got when installing the Nvidia drivers a few years back). I dont think I have glibc 2.2 or 2.3 installed (anyway to check for sure?). When I check add software there are several Glibc 2.3.3 files: glibc-devel glibc-lsb glibc-i18ndata glibc-profile glibc-static-devel glibc-utils Which ones should I install? Thanks in advance.
  21. I noticed though in the Mandrake Control Center I have options for a Radeon and a Radeon 8500 (the 9100 is actually just a rebadged 8500LE). Should I use these instead. By "(good luck)" do you mean you are anticipating some problems (oh oh... sounds like it).
  22. I have an ATI 9100 card. 3D acelleration does not seem to be enabled with the drivers in the defualt install (380 or so frames per second in GLXGEARS but Tux Racer is really slow). 23. All is working well now :) Thanks cannon.
  24. Well like all software companies Linux developers will need to make money from one of the (1) sale of software (so Linux cannot be free license forever), (2) sale of support or (3) sale of supporting services (like Lindows).
