  1. awesome app! thanks for the info ...I'll let you know how it come through! Gems
  2. nice....I tried the install of it and I think it went successfully. However as I have been reading up on it, it appears that by using this swat application, that it will remove unnecessary comments in my samba.conf file to make it easier to read and byt doing so it may inadvertantly remove a setting or paramater that may be needed without me knowing. I am kinda hesitant to use it but I will create a test box for it to be installed on used first. I was also thinking about changing the printer, but seeing how I got this one for what I think is a deal ($149.99) I think I am going to stick with it. I looked in to the HP models that they have and they are quite more $$$. A bit more $$$ than I want to spend right now for my lab environment. http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku....734F35E9763D9A6 I will do a bit more searching on the net first and see if there may be some sort of an alternative. For now I need to brush up on what the ports are called that the system sees when installing it. I know lpt is the common one, but it is the usb that I need to figure out. I need to figure this out in order to map a destination to my printer. But thanks again for the info on swat & the port number.
  3. yeah i checked some of it out but still none of it really works...i get my printer name and all but when I use webmin to add it it just tells me that the printer name is not valid ...wierd since I specified what the share name would be an all.. awesome news about the swat..i will try it on my box and let you know. Oh and how do I connect to the swat with the browser. like cups but on another port? also do you recall the command that tells you what ports u are using or are being used or are active at the moment on your system? :-) thanks bro!
  4. awesome will read up on it then. can you then tell me just off the bat what the port name for a usb device is ? like a printer on parallel is lpt so what would the equivalent be for a usb port? and I was thinking then to just have it placed on my 2k box and share it since that is where I originally installed it on. now when I do the smbclient -L I get this... Domain=[KRYNN] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- IPC$ IPC Remote IPC print$ Disk Printer Drivers iis Disk NETLOGON Disk Logon server share D Disk Lexmark-Fax Printer Lexmark 4200 Series ADMIN$ Disk Remote Admin SYSVOL Disk Logon server share C$ Disk Default share Server Comment --------- ------- KRYNN-SVR LAP LINUXBOX Linux Box Samba Server (mandrake) RIPPA Workgroup Master --------- ------- KRYNN KRYNN-SVR MDKGROUP APACHE how do I then join it with the simple server name and share name and post it in my webmin? reason is that i am skeptical now about anymore tweaking since I lost the ability to connect to the net with this particular box when other clients in my router can. Either way bro, I appreciate the quick response and help you gave me so far. Thanks again!
  5. I just bought the new lexmark 4200 (4 in 1 printer). I installed it succssfully on windows and was able to share it to other window clients (my laptop being the network tester for both windows and linux). Now I installed mandrake 9.0 on another pc to set up as a server. at the end of the install I was asked if I wanted to install a printer. I chose yes and the 3 options that were provided for me: 1) detect and install locally 2) detect and install from a local share ( I take it as a linux share) 3) detect and install from a windows share through samba when I chose the 3 it was not able to detect nor install...obviously.... So I connected it locally to my new mandrake server. It was able to detect when I chose the 1st option but there are no drivers in the list for it. So I chose no to install and when it booted I saw some of the posts here and found that I could use a default driver for it from windows but this was from another printer I have (lexmark z515) the other post mentioned that I could use cups. I started to use the cups but found that I do not know what the usb name is for attaching the device. If some knows pls tell me.... this is as far as I have gotten with cups. I then tried webmin, and for printer destination there is no option for usb. the only thing I can think of is null so I chose that and now for some reason my box is not communicating with the internet to otry and update the software that is on it in order to retry. So if anyone is knowledgable with lexmarks and printer installations please help me if you can. thanks alot ppl! PS. the attachment is just a screenshot of webmins options that it gave me. this is what dmesg gave regarding usb "usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs usb.c: registered new driver hub usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 18:49:04 Sep 20 2002 usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:1f.2 PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:1f.2 to 64 usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xff80, IRQ 11 usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 hub.c: USB hub found hub.c: 2 ports detected usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver usbdevfs: remount parameter error EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.17, 10 Jan 2002 on ide0(3,1), internal journal hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 2 usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x43d/0x8a) is not claimed by any active driver."
  6. Well I visited a link I saw on the forum and was wondering what all your thoughts are about this: Mandriva 2006 Book Mandriva 2006 Training - This package includes the NEW Mandriva 2006 book, a 10 hour training CD written in flash and the 4 CD set of Mandriva 2006. This is a great way to start with the NEW Mandriva (formerly Mandrake). Price: $24.95 Wondering if it is worth getting and if anyone has made any purchases through spidertools.com I think I am going to just climb the linux ladder by doing the training in order....starting from the: https://www.redhat.com/training/elearning/c.../rhl_intro.html https://www.redhat.com/training/elearning/c...ro_windows.html https://www.redhat.com/training/elearning/c...l_sysadmin.html https://www.redhat.com/training/elearning/c...networking.html and then going for the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) exam. By doing this I think I will get another pc for the installation of the Mandriva 2006 os. However I downloaded the live CD from Mandriva and was wondering: When I pop that CD in my system and it boots off it. Does any data get saved to my local drive? IF so then that means that whatever configs I do they never really get saved then...
  7. Ok I imported a txt file, csv (tab seperated & comma seperated) files to mysql with webmin and all that I got was 1 row entered fine and then rest were blank. however it did perform a count of rows and those same numbers are existing in my table. So its like I got 1 movie title along with its format and the rest are empty rows adding up the amount of movie titles in my collection... clueless at this point.
  8. yeah i was reading that on a site but the thing is that I had to recreate my own my.cnf file. I doing so I took it from my-medium.cnf and renamed it. that got my web min to access the file for managing. however in that file there is no reference to skip-networking so i am at a lost on what to do from here on out. I tried messing around with variable but trying to create usr' with "php@"%" variables to try and set it and it still won't work. I tried to look in my logs but I cannot find any logs that shows any mentioning to ysql let along any connection attempts to the box. If I could do that atleast I guess I would be able to at least see if the connection is trying to be established... is that correct?
  9. Having issues with trying to get my php commands to allow web browsers to access mysql server to retrieve and insert information. Basically I wrote some php code to access a hidden file, that in turns holds mysql connection params. These params are the host name, user, password and the db that the browser needs to connect to. The code is to first allow web browsers to establish a connection to my mysql DB on my box. once the browser establishes a connection it is supposed to verify a user and pass and then continue to process the rest of my code. basically this is a simple hit counter I created from a tutorial that is supposed to show the collected data on the web page. the code works fine when I use it on my laptop (XP using easyphp to enable and communicate with my apache and mysql). For both systems the users are the same and aswell as the passwords. Now in reality on my linux box when I run the browser I get an error telling that Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /var/www/html/main.php on line 74 Basically it cannot perform this function: $link = mysql_connect('localhost:3306', $db_user, $db_password); There already is another php file that holds the values for $db_user, $db_password in a hidden folder in my www root. The localhost part was swapped back and forth between the value of $db_host , localhost, & the full dns name for my box. I also tried using the port # too, to direct the connection to the mysql specific port and still unavailable to connect. Now since it does work with my laptop I know that the code is not the issue. I made sure that my router has the tunneling setting enabled. Used mysqladmin to even try to connect and it failed: telling me that my connection with modem(ISP IP) is not allowed. I then tried with mysqladmin to connect with my internal network ip for the sql server and it too tells me that I am not allowed to connect. how do i go about to allow a user to have remote access to mysql server? I tried various commands online and they do not work entirely and I cannot find a log specific to mysql in my box. I need to verify if the issue is connectivity to my box or to my mysql server. Thanks!
  10. fixed the issue with the missing my.cnf file. basically from my research there are some distros that do not have the mysql my.cnf file placed in the respective /etc directory. In this case I had to go to /usr/share/mysql/ take 1 of the 4 files there called: /usr/share/mysql/my-huge.cnf /usr/share/mysql/my-large.cnf /usr/share/mysql/my-medium.cnf /usr/share/mysql/my-small.cnf edit it and then save the edited file to the /etc directory as my.cnf if done correctly when the mysql database is restarted (within webmin is where I did it), you can not click on the mysql server configuration link and you will see your options for configuring it. the choice above for the my-***.cnf file to configure varies according what your system is doing with mysql. Just open them up and read the notations and proceed from there...
  11. well for whatever it is worth the webmin just wont list the services as started or set it to auto start even though they do. Going to close this chat since this issue appears to be isolated to only one of my boxes. thanks for the help ppl! Appreciated!
  12. Did a little more probing and found out that webmin is stating that I am missing a cnf file for mysql msg is: The MySQL configuration file /etc/my.cnf was not found on your system. You may need to adjust the module configuration to use the correct path. I found this msg when I chose to start practicing with php and mysql. went in to the Mysql server configuration option and this was what appeared. I then went to the file manager and manually went to the folder and looked for the file including a locate command and neither was found. If I find this file on another system, can I copy it over to this directory without hurting my system? Or do I need to reinstall mysql in order to get this file generated?
  13. ok, after the reboot this is what I get, MySql Mar 30 03:50:34 linuxbox mysql: succeeded Mar 30 04:03:13 linuxbox : - /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock Mar 31 04:04:15 linuxbox : - No longer present writable file : /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock Apr 7 04:13:57 linuxbox mysql: succeeded Apr 7 09:25:31 linuxbox mysql: succeeded Apr 7 19:50:25 linuxbox mysql: succeeded Apr 7 20:51:46 linuxbox mysql: succeeded USB Apr 7 20:53:17 linuxbox usb: Initializing USB controller (usb-uhci): succeeded Apr 7 20:53:17 linuxbox usb: Mount USB filesystem succeeded So to me it all appears fine. But I still get a no in the boot and services section in my webmin. When I go to services in webmin I get this msg: Click this button to start the MySQL database server on your system with the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start. This Webmin module cannot administer the database until it is started.
  14. no I did not reboot today, I am logged in remotely at the moment working on my apache but soon will be storing stuff in my db. I will reboot and post my findings in a moment. No usb devices currently installed yet since I need to look for the drivers. The bloothdevice does not come with drivers and I also want to install a printer and share it, but there are no lexmark z515 drivers for linux either. there is something that is compatible but I am not sure if I want to test it. Also on top of that I may have only 1 usb port (can't tell now cuz i am not at my box physically), and if so then I may have to install my usb port hub and there are no drivers for that either.
  15. Using webmin remotely to access my box and noticed that the usb service is not initialized. Action Start at boot? Description usb No This startup script try to load your modules for your usb devices. So I used the options available to start it as well as have it to start on boot. Executing /etc/rc.d/init.d/usb start .. Initializing USB controller (usb-uhci): [ OK When I save and exit back to the services menu it again appears with the same info as above. Can someone tell me why? Is it because I do not have a usb device connected in the port yet? (Planning on placing my bluetooth device in that port ...DBT-120 PersonalAir Wireless USB Bluetooth Adapter) Also I am looking for the drivers for this device. Does anyone know where I can get them from, since Dlink does not offer linux or unix support for it? Also I am having the exact same issue with MySql service too.
  16. k, I think I configured my network properly because I am able to use webin with my domain name to access my box and configure it. I was not able to test the https due to the fact that I am at work and even though I may be able to access it thru the firewall it, I cannot test it due to company regulations. Now I performed an nslookup command and got this message. nslookup krynnca.homelinux.org Server: 192.***.*.* Address: 192.***.*.*#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: krynnca.homelinux.org Address: 70.80.101.152 Now is this a good or a bad thing. I tried to see online but I just cannot get a straight answer. I want to know if this is correct cuz I want to test my email params to see if I can send and receive mail from and for my own domain. but without knowing if I set the domain name and all the dns entries correct I cannot assurable know if or what may be the issue with my mail server. I am trying to configure postfix, along with send & fetchmail. Later I want to use squirrellmail but for now I just need to get the latter going.
  17. Wow, guess I got another 4 books to add to my reading... ... Pretty much I am not familiar with mysql...I have worked with access a few times byusing the gui and setting up tables and a few queries. I saw that with my box it comes with sql so that is the reason for my change over. I want to take all that I have down with access and put it the sql DB and then either using sql statements/commands, access or any othe tool interact with my db and pull or place information within it. You said that I need to install unixODBC and related stuff? k I will update my system and start from there. Is that ny particular applet or tool that gives us the inteactivity that access has but with mysql? I know we got some or one at work but seeing how I am not in that dept, I will be told it is FYI only and sent on my way.
  18. have an xls file that is used in access and I would like to import the same file to Mysql. does anyone know how? Was told by a coworker that sql and access db's can communicate and share data but I cannot find the options in order to do it. I have also made an exported txt file if it makes things easier. It has been attached. Basically I am looking to keep track of my films with the ability to query and append the db from the browser in a future project. I use webmin for my admin tasks, but I cannot see any options for importation of files. Listing.txt
  19. Oh the area I should be in is Glouchester shire I believe. Not 100% sure but I think that is where they hhave their house. Supposed to also see some tours like the krays twins, and JTR, including the tower, the palace the huge Museam you guys have and maybe get a pic or 2 with me and those palace guards going at it!! lol
  20. yeah coming over there to see some friends and vibe...maybe check out Amsterdam and some of your pubs and mingle with them blokes, lol. Yeah gonna be there during the world cup and drink alot. although I am told that I should not let ppl know that I can speak french in case they mistake me for a France bloke and cause a riot, lol Not sure yet if I will be on a 2 week or just 1 week vac but really looking forward to it since I have yet to travel off this continent here...
  21. :D LOL, yeah I know what you mean... I found that if you got a nic card for win98 you better have access to the drivers o install it and if not you better have an ibm, 3com or dlink card that can be detected else you be spending a nice day searching. what kind of nic is it btw? but yeah definately let me know how it turns out. never know if I may come across that issue in the future!
  22. No prob, As I do agree I think it is easier to network an XP with linux than 98 only because I can do it all in 1 shot on XP , that is assign IP, domain, or wrkgrp name & then reboot. Obviously your first prob is that nic issue. Being that it is 98 I would just uninstall the card altogether and leave it out of the box. Reboot and see what the system sees with ipconfig and double check with the device manager. Obviously if there is still references to nic cards in device mgr, try doing an unistall from there although I think the real option is remove... After a reboot, I would just re-insert my nic card and redo the install (that is if the eth 0 & 1 are gone). With XP this might have not happened, not sure if in all my yrs of tinkering with networks (windows), this sort of glitch has ever occurred, that I would see a physical references to additional nics as you have. For the MCC, thnx for the heads up... since I have been installing and tinkering in my Drake box i have not yet gone to the gui. Most of my configs at the start were done with putty accessing the linuxconf, userconf, netconf, etc when I'm on my laptop remotely. When I was first introduced to the whole Linux environment there was a gui, but was advised not to use it that the best way to learn would be with the shells. Now yrs later when my interest in linux has resurfaced I guess some ol lessons have stayed. Also while at work we deal with HP/UX systems so there is no gui other than a menu that is manually created for us to use as we go about our job. with the webmin, I just saw a post somewhere in here and went to the website and saw that it allowed me to access any system (win or Lin) and administer it. When you get your systems going I would recommend getting it. The Features this browser based app has is so time saving. It allows me to use my laptop to interact with my network and saves me the trouble of having to sit physically in front of my boxes. although I will have to check this MCC out and see if there are features it has that webmin does not provide. B) But yeah, I too think that your issue is the firewall. Is this an app or rules built in your router?
  23. Why, What is the difference between it and xp or 2k? Aslong as the 2 pc's are in the same lan zone and can ping eachother should not the 2 of them be able to communicate hardware wise? Even if they are in 2 seperate wkgrp's? Can Laurie be pinged from the 98? For the samba I found that the best way to test it and get it up and running was to just modify the smbconf near the end to what I wanted to share. Course the creating of users and passwd's. when it was up webmin has done all the configs for me without even going gui... Now I'm just working on mounting of my winshares and then I'm good to go. Btw what is the MCC? lol And how many nic's do you have in the 98 box?
  24. HAHAHAHAHA I feel like such a loser! thanks for the help guys, i figured it out what I was doing wrong... or did not do actually... went in to webmin and saw from the config page @ the bottom that there is an option that allows me to set it to auto start with the system.....Hehehe But thnx for the help especially wth the netstat command there. And for sure if you can get that 3rd cd for drake 9.0 or 9.1 in general to upgrade I'd appreciate it! guys rock!
  25. k when I use the command you supplied me to check the port, I did not see the port 10000 in the list. So I assume that my issue is related to that. when I do the other commands I get this: error reading information on service webmin: No such file or directory So I reran the setup file and checked the ports. Now it is listed when I run the netstat command. So I continue with the chkconfig --list webmin & chkconfig webmin on : and get the same message again. error reading information on service webmin: No such file or directory service webmin start will not work obviously cuz I have to have the webmin as a listed service which for some reason it does not appear to be. Is this because I have the folder and its files under / in my file system structure? either Way I redid the install using the exact commands as is on the webmin page and rebooted my system the install placed the files in this directory: /usr/local/webmin and redid all the commands again that you listed and I do not see the port 10000 open, nor does it appear as a service. So for now I have made a script in / that reruns the setup. Only thing is that I cannot have this script startup with the system because it still needs a user to hit enter to really initialize the setup from when it asks "Config file directory [/etc/webmin]:" so far this is the only way I can get around to it. Just a drag that I have to log in to my box and manually start it, but at the same time it is nice cuz it seems to be a cheap added security to my sys...
