  1. hmm just tried to ping the router 2 from my laptop and got nothing. laptop has ip from router 1 so no connection is getting from router 1 to router 2 except the ip that router 1 has given router 2 so that if I was connected to router 2 for an ip I would have the internet.... oh my email is krynn@videotron.ca if you don't see me here and ftp is setup...
  2. nah the other pc's are on the first router 192.168.2.1 when the printer is on router 2 (x.x.3.1) none of them can access it.
  3. i created an ftp account for u... for some reason browsers don't work for it so u need an ftp client to access it. right now I placed the hp printer with an ip of 192.168.2.50 which is the ip range of router 1 but it is physically connected to router 2 which is 192.168.3.1...gonna see if this works...
  4. you mean give it a static IP of that which is in the range of router 2 which it is physically attached to with the gateway of router 1?? here is my ip table router 1 (524) = 192.168.2.1 on it I have: NT server 192.168.2.5 drake 192.168.2.4 ubuntu 192.168.2.3 XP wifi client 192.168.2.x (dhcp enabled) in my basement where I want to test pc & etc.. router 2 (624) = 192.168.3.1 on it I have: HP 4mv = bootp, before when static was 192.168.3.50 laptop... for wherever in my house or outside I want to be able to grab a signal from router 1 or 2 with an IP that will give it access to the entire network & all printers... I also want to be able to print to the hp printer from any pc in the house even though NT server has a usb printer (lexmark 4-in 1 x4270) attached to it. by default for all unless specified, to print to HP printer since it can be installed on linux. btw jetadmin...is that a pc app pr browser tool that allows me to configure the printer? we have something at work browser based that allows us to see the toner level, if printers need maintenance kit...is that what jetadmin is?
  5. k well I did what you said but the thing is that I am now connected to router 1(524) that is in my bedroom with my lap top in the basement that is next to the 624. I can use the internet still as I was originally but what about my printer that is physically attached to router 2 (624) it is on a different IP and I cannot access it and the others will not either. I tried to change it to bootp and the self test printed out a 0.0.0.0 showing me that it cannot get an ip from router 1 so either way no pc is able to print to it.
  6. Hey bro, as usual I get your support! :P Well being that the routers are dlinks I called them and when I finally got through they told me to do this. router 1 & 2 should be switched router 1 was a dlink 524 & 2 was 624 so now I need to make router 1 = 624, 2 = 524... Internet to router 1 = 192.168.0.1 from router 1 leave my servers and linux boxes connected to it with static IP as they already are... router 1 will have a cable to router 2 = 192.168.0.2 router 1 will provide a dhcp service to router 2 in the same 192.168.0.x range. network printer can have either a static or dynamic IP in the range. from there router 2 will have dhcp service disable because clients logging in will get the IP from router 1. SSID can be whatever because router 2 or router 1 will pick em up and router 1 will assign an IP in the range of 192.168.0.x which should allow my laptop to logon to my NT Server for domain access. This apparently should allow all clients and servers in the lan to see eachother in the network for their shares and resources. Too tired now to give a try but when I wake up in a few hours I will try and let you know if what they say is correct. Also they told me that I need to make sure that both routers have the same virtual server settings so that services are activated and directed to the appropriate places in the lan. Thus if I sit outside or anywhere in the house I should see my network and hae total access as though I was using 1 router, which is the basic principle of a switch. Oh btw the printer I picked up is an HP 4mv network printer. This old school baby should allow the clients & servers print access to it. After this I will get back to setting up a distro on that rack server. I think I will have to get an IDE hdd and install on it and use the scsi drives as file space, spooler, and atleast 1 for backups. Then just sit and wait for that ml370 to arrive and have some serious fun learning raid. Then in the end I hope to be knowledgable enuff to get that beginner certification from red hat! I'll keep ya posted as things turn out! ... gonna dream about my new humidor I got today as an early b-day gift, :P
  7. K this is more of a general network question that applies to both windows and linux in a way... I have 2 routers: both on a different ip setting by 1 byte.. ex: 192.168.1.1 router 1 192.168.2.1 rotuer 2 they both support wi fi in case you need to know... I have 4 pc's connected to the router1 and 3 have a static ip and 1 is dynamic. for the static pc's, 1 pc is a winnt server & the other 2 are linux boxes. Now my internet is leading in to this router. and then shared over to the other router by a cable (due to the router being in the basement for other pc's to work on) now router #2 with its Ip gives access to my laptop via wifi and has a network printer (hp laserjet 4mv- static ip) in its ip range. on this 2nd router I will be connecting other pcs to tinker around and setup other linux distros to learn and have fun with. So by extending the cable to it from the other router, allows it to share the internet with any pc connected to the router aswell my laptop. Now the thing is before I was able to have my laptop (xp) be part of a domain with the nt server.... now since it gets it's ip from router 2 I cannot see the network on router 1. I gave the 2nd router the same workgroup name as the first. Should it not allow me to see the other workgroup? If not why and how can I go about to get the 2 groups see each other? Right now the internet is working fine...ie I am posting this message. any pc that is joined to router 2 is able to access the net too and since I hae a network printer I want the pc's that are on router 1 to be able to print to my network printer which means they too need to see the workgroup on their side.. I can ping all the pc's in both groups from my laptop but if I was on the NT server on router 1 I cannot ping my network printer.... If you guys need any more info just let me know...I am researching online but I think that there are some terminologies that I am missing which is not allowing me to find the help I need. Thanks...gems
  8. Well bro, I think the issue really was with the terminator. I had to take the cable away from the Dat drive and basically add it to the back end (like connecting the mouse to the system) and that terminated it fine. Funny thing now is that the utility shows something else on the cable at id 6 where the drive used to be. I will wait till the install is done and then reboot and see what it is. if anything I will maybe be able to grab the cable from the compaq 1600 and see if that has the same cable and terminator at the end and voila I might actually then be able to use the tape on this new server and just leave nt on the compaq. Thing is I would really prefer to get mandrake running on that system instead.... maybe after the install I will use the other drives and give it a try and see if it will still freeze on me. As for the Raid. I saw the options that they gave me and yeah there were several that Ubuntu had that allows me to configure. Raid0, another maybe raid1, Raid5, and another but I choose the 5 option and was able to proceed and all but skipped it for now till I got my bearings & the system going.
  9. Nice, I am done work in about 2 hours or so ... when I get home I will look in to it and see if I can get the system going by the time I get back here for my last night shift. Man I gotta thank you bro, seriously... I would have gotten this far without your help!
  10. yeah I have 4 hdd in the system and 1 extra slot to add another one. now the thing is that when I had tried to access the config it errored on me and told me that the error was for volume 2 but then it was saying afterwards that it was using volume 2. If I cannot access let say for whatever reason the utility from here, can I use the software version to overide it? and will it be just as sound since you stated that I should do it from the utility itself? Ok I will look in to Raid5 as you said. I just found the definitions and descriptions @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_arr...dependent_disks So I will try to see if I can get it going, howver if for the meantime I find this confusing can I configure it later on after my ubuntu install? Pretty much since I have 4 disks. I want to keep my windows on the 1st drive and use the 2nd one for my ubuntu. I also want to keep my 3rd one for file storage space until I get the complete hang of all this tech. Which leaves me with the 4th drive for the replication. Now my last question is since this disk will be used for the replication, does it have to have enough file space that covers the 1st & 2nd drive drives space? seeing as to how they are all 18gig each in size, the 2 first drives holding the os is at a 36gig size....and then there is the 3rd drive I want to use to keep my downloads and be shareable between the 2 OS on a fat32 filesystem. So I am wondering if I need to get a 5th drive with atleast 36-54 gigs since I still have the 4th drive for whatever usage.
  11. awesome, thnx for the heads up on the scsi terminators... I forgot to write down the model for my scsi controller, but when I get home I will research in to it and make some calls to locals stores. Odd thing though is that in windows the tape drive works fine without any issues. I even tested it by running an NTBackup command that allowed me to backup the data to my a tape my cousin passed me, until I buy my own. also from what I read from those links above, I seem to have 2 types of scsi connectors on the motherboard. Are these just like the scsi controllers themselves too? -One (1) Ultra single ended SCSI connector -One (1) Ultra 160 LVD SCSI connector http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/scsi_connecters.html (just a link that I found that explains the connectors I was researching)... From what I recall, they are not in use and no cables are at all attached to them. So I am wondering just off the bat like that. I remembered a long time ago that to terminate you would take the end of a scsi cable and connect it to itself.... I take it that this option is no longer effective since my connectors on the cables are all the same? For the raid, As it boots the system prompts me to press ctrl-key to access the Raid configuration. I still need to look up on that because I still cannot tell if it is software or hardware. If hardware is this something that is built in to the slots where the scsi hdd's slide into? & if software how does one go about to remove and re-install it? I figure this would be the best way for me to understand how it truly works and how to configure it. also when I install Ubuntu, during the install process it prompts me to create, remove, edit ..I suppose, the raid volumes on the system. So I also need to read up on the ubuntu install process to comprehend this part of the install. Either way it sure feels good to finally be able to atleast boot and get the server going this far. Thnx for the help!
  12. Ok well I think I kind of isolated the issue. think it was a jumper issue. I finally was able to get the cdrom to boot as default by using another jumper plug and setting it again as master. By doing this I was able get it recognized automatically in the bios and also able to get cd's booted up by it. The problem with the install of certain distros such as ubuntu is due to my tape drive. Either it needs to be terminated on its end or there is a driver issue with it and the distrobution. With regards to the mandrake distro (9.0), it still locks up on the install so I am down to either ubuntu, redhat, slackware, or pclinuxos. I already know that ubuntu should work because I was able to get the live cd to run fine as long as the tape drive was disconnected from the system. But the issue I have with it is configuring the raid and the grub (I believe to setup my partitions and filesystems). I should be able to get the necessary howto info on their site. Now with the tape drive issue, how would I terminate it. What is the specific name for the terminating cable, plug.... for it. That way I can search for one at local pc stores. I think that the whole issue has to be with the terminator and/or the tape drive. When I get back I will check in to that a lil more cuz I kdo believe the tape drive should work with any distro. 13. not worth it really for just that one scsi card...plus I got some in the ol treasure trove box of nic, vga's and other cards. but the system seems to be running fine off this one card and I like things simple. not sure why these guys had an extra card in there when one is good enough. and the store is a used pc store so i get things so cheap that it would not really make sense to gripe over an extra scsi card malfuntioning. especially when I might setup and ebay store for the used stuff, lol. Nah I'll just keep with this issue until I eventually get it to work. I know a buddy that is somewhat experienced with this so I may have him take a look at it as a last resort, but the linux install is what is really getting to me. funny thing is that I always get other ppls pc's to work and now I can't even get my own to work, hahaha :P
  14. yeah that is the beauty of a manufactured system...enter the model # and your igood to go.. but with this system I haven't the foggiest clue. There is a sticker on it but this looks to refer to the company that had owned the box prior. For the Bios. Yeah I tried to see what it was from boot but the screen flickers so fast with 2 words of something on the screen and then starts the intel boot agent (press ctrl-S to enter setup). After that I get prompted to enter the kscsi utility (ctrl-c ...i believe...). .. for the lat option, the raid controller. That would be ctrl M, I think. then of course I can press the F2 option at any point to get the bios or F12 for network boot. Do you think that the bios would tell me about the boot agents and/or further info about the bios itself? But ultimatelyI think I really should just dismantle it and put it back together again.may be a lil pain with the way the server is built, but in the end I'll end up knowing more about the system. Oh btw...funny thing too. I had to pull a mcgyver on it. there were 2 scsi controller cards in it and for some reason when I started tinkering with the system at my house only 1 was working fine. I had to remove the other one and then take the cable that was attached to the removed one (for the dat tape) and pass it throught he opening in the back where a pci card would be and then taper it to the adaptec scsi controller port on the back. then the system saw my hdd's and the tape drive. but when I was at the store the system showed the information fine so I am wondering if that may be the issue. someone pointed out to me that I need to terminate my scsi cable for the system to work. So maybe that is the case of the freeze during install or the fact that I made a mcgyver move and mandrake cannot get past the dat tape. I'll try the install again but with minimal things attached to it and take a closer look at that other scsi controller....
  15. was thinking about that but that may be a lil challlenge in itself. the I would have to dismantle the whole system to gain access to the mother to get the schem info and then do a search online for the comp...unless you know of a program that would tell you....or is the info from windows device manager good enough? thing is that I don't see dev mgr showing motherboard information so I think I will have to dismantle the system and rebuild it. I did want to try and remove all the software from completely with the bios as is but was kinda nervous because I do not have the scsi utility software that detects my hard drive and dat tape. I'll try what you suggest by swapping the cdrom with another one. I doubt that is the issue cause I was able to install NT Server with it. I think I may just have to purchase a new ide hdd and find a way to mount it in there with brackets and install the os to it if possible and then use the scsi drives as a backup alternative or simply for space....If that works I would be content in having it as an apache/ftp server with linux....If I have to leave the NT server on it then I will custom it for IIS and then have another linux box diverted to it to for my web and ftp storage space or maybe just a simple mp3 streaming box for the lan.
  16. With regards to the 9.0 I already have a server with it installed and it works fine. I still get support for the packages with urpmi by stating that I have version 9.1 and grab sources from US sites. So when I use the same cd that is bootable I get the installation going with the boot disk because for some reason the system ignores or is unable to detect my IDE cdrom which is set in the bios as the first boot device. As it boot with the boot disk it does detect my hdd being scsi and my scsi controller and actually starts the install fine, except when I get to about 22% of the install from the first cd, then the whole system freezes up. I have a newer release (mandriva 2006, 4cd set) but I think the first cd is a bad burn & and so errors on me when I try an install. For the type of server I only know that it is a p3 1.0 ghz processor, about 1-2 gig of ram, 4 hot swappable fujitsu scsi hdd (about 18gigs each), the scsi controller is an adaptec (ver# --will edit this here when I get home from work). Has a seagate dat tape drive, 1 ide cd/dvdrom, video card is an ATI version, no sound card, it does have a raid software---firmware vers 5.xx, intel boot agent -- but will have to state that info again when I get home, I do gain access to that, the scsi utility, bios during bootup, however the error that I get in the post bootup is pertaining to the raid controller. It says that there is an error with the disk volume 2 and then continues to tell me that it is going to use volume 2 ---I will edit when I get home... Off the bat I have tried older versions of redhat with a boot disk, ubuntu live cd, pclinuxos, mandrake, slackware...all of them have issues with the boot disk...not that the bootdisk is errored but from reading the instructions on the boot disk and then trying to access the cdrom seems to be the issue except for mandrake 9.0. Now I am thinking that maybe I should get a scsi CDROM and retry to see if it can boot off that. Thing is I have not dealt with scsi peripherals in over several years, so knowledge is very limited. I even tried using an old hdd which seemed to posibly work, but the drive was making clicking noises so I stopped the install thinking that the hdd was corrupted. however I would rather have the os installed on the hdd. I was also thinking of trying to find a distribution that fits on a diskette and then when installed and ran I could tell it to download packages from the net (similar to gentoo min cd install - from what I hear). but have had no luck so far in finding one....been reading up on coyote linux, damn small linux, even slim linux which I just found now (http://slim.cs.hku.hk/). thing is that if there is an actually software out there that allows one, thru floppy, to choose his boot device and in turn have that device start let's say a linux cd by right away autodetecting it, as a pose to the windows boot disk that only gains drive access with a letter and then you having to run the executeable manually to start the install, would be amazing. However what one would call an app as such eludes. closest searches always bring me to boot disks or partition managers. I have even thought about a network install but I am not good with getting nic cards to work from prompts. for something as such I would really need guided help with that. This is why I was thinking and going towars Gentoo. In case I never stated here, Live cd's don't work....which makes sense since no cd autoboots from the cdrom. Even from my NT2K server install, I had to use the win98 bootdisk and then run then winnt command from the prompt. **hope my compaq ML370 gives me less issues than this baby when she comes. I will see if I can grab a pic from my quick cam and add it to the post so you can see this system.
  17. I having quite a bit of a problem with a rack server I newly purchased. It appears to be a clone server so there is no mdel # to refer to the system in general. Now I tried to install mandrake 9.0 and 10.1 both from setting the cdrom as the first boot option and neither work. I had to use the rawwritewin to create boot disks for the both and so far for the 9.0 it works. For 10 it tells me that I need to isert another disk cuz there is an issue with this one (to note 10.1 is a dvd copy). So as I proceed with the install of 9.0 when I choose all my options and it starts to copy the packages to the hdd (scsi) it eventually freezes up at about the 22% range and I am forced to reboot. I have tried several install methods by changing the size of the partitions and letting the system auto choose as well and I always get the freezing situation. Now I have other cds' of other distro's and also live cd's ...these ones appear to not have a rawrite utility on them and so I need to get the system to boot from the cdrom in order to boot them to really tell if the issue is a hdd problem or what... I have a windows boot disk that works fine but when I "dir" the distro cd I do not know what or how to have the cd perform an install as though I would be installing a windows product. are there universal boot disks that would allow me to boot any distro and if not how can I go about to install another distro or my mandrake then on this box. Already I have installed winnt 2k on it and it works fine so I doubt there really is a hdd issue, however I have 5 disks for it and all are seen fine from witihn NT2k, so i do not understand why my distro is giving me issues like this since I already have it running on other boxes... Any help would be appreciated. Note** my other distros are: PClinux, Ubuntu, redhat, slackware, isolinux, & klinux.... thnx!
  18. was tinkering around with my urpmi and smart options for updating my packages and retrieving them. I saw the option with smart and decided to give it a try. when it did not work I used the option on the urpmi.removemedia -a to clear the data and reinserted new sources when I tried to get pico to see what it was like I started getting errors. When I solely typed the command urpmi I got this error: Can't call method "arch" on an undefined value at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/URPM/Resolve.pm line 14. this is the code and what line 14 contains: exists $properties{$_} || $state->{installed}{$_} and next; #- keep track if satisfied. my $satisfied = 0; #- check on selected package if a provide is satisfying the resolution (need to do the ops). foreach my $sense (keys %{$state->{provided}{$n} || {}}) { ranges_overlap($sense, $s) and ++$satisfied, last; } #- check on installed system a package which is not obsoleted is satisfying the require. unless ($satisfied) { if ($n =~ /^\//) { $db->traverse_tag('path', [ $n ], sub { my ($p) = @_; exists $state->{obsoleted}{$p->fullname} and return; $state->{ask_remove}{join '-', ($p->fullname)[0..2]} and return; ++$satisfied; }); } else { $db->traverse_tag('whatprovides', [ $n ], sub { my ($p) = @_; exists $state->{obsoleted}{$p->fullname} and return; $state->{ask_remove}{join '-', ($p->fullname)[0..2]} and return; foreach ($p->provides) { $options{keep_state} or $state->{installed}{$_}{$p->fullname} = undef; if (my ($pn, $ps) = /^([^\s\[]*)(?:\[\*\])?\[?([^\s\]]*\s*[^\s\]]*)/) { $pn eq $n or next; ranges_overlap($ps, $s) and ++$satisfied; can someone tell me how I can repair this cause I cannot see or tell what the problems is. thnx [moved from Software by spinynorman] solved the issue by simply install the distro in vmware and then copied the file over to my live box.
  19. I downloaded the Ubuntu from their site a few days ago and I must say that the install was pretty nice and user friendly. did not take long to figure out how to use the partition parameters (think it was grub if I am not mistake). When it was done however I did not like the fact that it went over on my resolutions settings. I had to lower it back down to a stable 1024 x 768 to get rid of the lines crossing my screen. Also too what bothered me at the time was the fact that I had to use sudo to do anything and that root was blocked out from logging in the gui. This is because I had no idea what my root password was and if I tried to do a passwd root command it would ask me for my existing root pass which I had no idea what it was. However it was simple to get it going, just log in to gui with the account I created in setup and then go to the user & groups applet and change the password there. but then I realized that I had to learn some commands to get updates and install appz. But overall I did and do like it. with webmin I was able to find what packages were built for it and get them with no problem. Being a console man myself I must say that the gui too was nice. simple, uncluttered and nicely colored. For a 2nd distro I am impressed and will continue to have it as part of my network. Now to check out Devil-linux .... PS --- Still gonna be a drake head 4 life...... when are we gonna re-vote for those new banners? 20. Awesome, pretty straightforward then. I guess the source part is what would give me problems then. Being as, I don't know much about compiling and such just yet. But I assume that when I get to that point I would have a real grasp on the other types of installation ways. & of course the phenominal help and support tat guys offer! Thanks, much appreciated. Oh btw, just to note: When I went to add the sources to my system for upgrades and downloads, I noticed that for my drakebox 9.0, I cannot get any support for a majority of the packages. What I had to do was state that I had a version 9.2 (I believe) and then use the sources that it provided for me. So far things run smoothe and I haven't had any issues as yet. So in case there are other newbs reading this and are at the same point give it a try. It helped me.
  21. Yeah I understood that part. I can manipulate files by themselves but when it comes to setting the same permission to several folders within a folder. I can't seem to figure out how. Just figured it out so you moderators can delete the post.... -R is what i was trying to do before but I really had put -r instead thnx eyeh8windows for the support!
  22. I basically created a folder where I have tons of pics in folders with different names. I am learning the bash commands and came on to chmod where I want to set permissions to several folders in a working directory. I know that like windows, if I am in a folder I can change the permissions by using the *.* with the command to manipulate the all files in that directory. Now that I am working with directories I want to change the perms on several folders and if possible to know how to change the files in them aswell. I am in the prompt and not the gui mode because I just like it that way. I know that if I was in gui and went to the proporties option that I would then be able to do it to all the folders and the files but this is not the case. can someone give me a quick hand for the evening. PS I found out with some searches online that an ftp program allows you to do it but not neccessarily with all servers. In my case I was using CuteFtp and it worked on some but not all the files. Instead it gave me this message: 500-"SITE CHMOD 775 "the filename"" not understood. 500 SITE not understood. can someone explain this to me also. thnx alot.
  23. yeah I had read the topic before and found it really interesting. that I can use a simple command "urpmi" and be able to install and update my system with ease. No longer searching for the app on line and downing it and then installing. As long as the file is hosted in the sources then I can get it and install it. and with webmin, it allows me to search for the appz beforehand. What I also saw and found interesting was that different distros have different commands for getting updates and doing installs. Like ubuntu, it uses the sudo apt-get install "filename" in order to install the application . For this reason I found Webmin very handy. for a newb like me it allows me to search for files or files similar to what I want for my particular distro. for example in ubuntu.... the updated apache is called apache2. seems like webmin is one of the best tools a newb has till he learns his distro. So to make sure I got this straight then, my module (driver) can be in the format of a tar, rpm, and so forth fileformat and thus depending on what it is, is how I will be installing it? And most of the times the file does come with instructions on how to install. Am I correct in this?
  24. I too am interested in trying to understand how drivers work. Where as with windows, when you download them you get an auto installer or you can down the files in to a directory and then just point to that folder to have the install setup grab them. Of course that is windows, so with Linux does it work in the same fashion? Can I grab a driver from the net and untar...well let's say dump the files to a folder that I create and then tell the system that for the particular device I am trying to install that the drivers are located here and voila...it does its job, or is there more to it. If you guys need an example, let's say I want to install drivers for my lexmark z515 inkjet printer. So I go to http://www.mandriva.com/hardware/results and find from their lists a set of drivers for various printers. mine of course is not listed there, but was told that I can use another models drivers and it would work fine. So I find these drivers here: http://www.mepis.org/node/7320 and I download them.... fortunately for these drivers someone has taken the liberty to tell us how to do the install but let's say for example there was no instructions, just a file. What would I do? Hope this is a bit more in depth for you guys to help us out.
  25. Wanted to say thanks for the info on that printer there. not sure why that is but you seemed to be right I have found drivers for the model 4076, where as when I go to the Lexmark canadian & US and Australian website I get the model 4270. I will give it a try on a test pc and see how it goes and let you know. thnx!
