  1. I'm stuck with a dial-up access and it takes forever to download a large file. I'm about to update my computer again through Urpmi. If I were to loose connection or need to stop the download will I loose everything and have to start all over? When I was using Suse if I were to interupt the download, Yast would install all completed downloads that has been downloaded at that point. When I update this time I'll want to install more than one or two updates at a time like I did the last time I updated Mandriva many thanks maparus

  5. Thank you for your reply. I already use urpmi and I have PLF also. But since I started using Linux last fall I've tried to install programs from source with no success at all. What started out as just seeing if I could do it has turned into a quest. Thank you for your information I will read the pages you showed me and see if I can get any closer to my goal many thanks maparus
  6. I'm trying to install krename from a tar.gz file I can't get past ,/configure. I get "configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables" What does this mean and how do I fix it. Also would Would I just type "make" as my next line followed by "make install" in root for my last line? I can't understand what the config.log is saying many thanks maparus [maparus@localhost krename-3.0.11]$ su Password: [root@localhost krename-3.0.11]# ./configure checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking for -p flag to install... yes checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking for gawk... gawk checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes checking for kde-config... /usr/bin/kde-config checking where to install... /usr (as returned by kde-config) checking for style of include used by make... 7. When I connect my two computers with a KVM-switch Is it then possible to use crossover cables to connect two computers when one is Celeron with Windows XP the other Sempron 2800 with Mandriva 2006 I would need to copy files back and forth. Many thanks maparus
  8. Thank you all for the information. maparus
  9. I have my new computer up and running with mandriva 2006 only on it thanks to the helpI recieved in this forum plus I still have my old HP still sitting on the desk too with Windows XP on it. My cds that came with my HP won't install Windows XP on my new computer and I still need Windows for my HP 3500c scanner no drivers available for it yet. My question is Is there a cable adapter available hat will allow me to hook both computers to the same monitor so I won't have to keep switching cables around when I need to scan something And is there some way to connect the two computers so that scanned information won't have to be burned to a cd to get the information into my Linux computer. I know I can duel boot but I don't want to but a copy of Windows just to run my scanner and a new Scanner is not in the budget for now. many thanks maparus
  10. I'm practicing using the terminal for basic commands. So far I can make a file (mkdir) change to another file (cd), display whats in the file (ls), remove files (rm), and remove folders (rmdir) But for the life of me I can't move a file. Here is what I do with the results. Can someone please correct my command? I named the file test. Try mv _help got me even more confused [maparus@localhost Desktop]$ su Password: [root@localhost Desktop]# mv test/home/maparus/Documents mv: missing file argument Try `mv --help' for more information. [root@localhost Desktop]# Many thanks maparus
  11. I went to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and was able to download PLF from there with no problem. URPMI also gives me the options to use the stripped kernel, the three are Kernel-source-2.6-2.6.12-18mdk, Kernel-source-stripped-2.6-2.6.12-18mdk, and Kernel-source-multimedia-source2.6.12.mm.1mdk. I see that the stripped verson is only half the size of the other two options and I am on a dialup connection so it would be more practical to use it. But what are the other two for? And will I loose anything by going with the stripped version many thanks maparus
  12. I'll try that when I get home. I knew the driver was at PLF I had it on my old computer but when I try to install PLF on this computer I get root@localhost maparus]# urpmi.addmedia plf-free ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distribu tions_Linux/plf/mandrake/free/2006.0 with hdlist.cz unable to access hdlist file of "plf-nonfree", medium ignored added medium plf-free wrote config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.update_source.cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.main.cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.contrib.cz] reconfiguring urpmi for media "plf-free" reconfiguration done wrote config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "plf-free"... ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux.../$ARCH/hdl ist.cz ...retrieving failed: curl: (9) FTP: access denied retrieval of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium "plf-free" examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.plf-free.cz] problem reading synthesis file of medium "plf-free" unable to update medium "plf-free" [root@localhost maparus]# urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux...non-free/2006.0 with hdlist.cz
  13. I'm back again. Here's what I did 1. Downloaded Linux IA32 to my desktop 2. Moving files using the terminal still gets me confused so I logged out of maparus and logged in as root went to home/desktop/ and moved the file to (lib/modules/2.6.12.12-12mdk/kernal/drivers/video/nvidia) A search found that to be the only Nvidia file found 3. logged out of root and logged in again to maparu and went to lib/modules/2.6.12.12-12mdk/kernal/drivers/video/nvidia) 4. opened a terminal and logged on as root 5. Typed init 3 6. typed urpmi binutils 7. showed it's already installed 8. typed "sh nvidia-linux-x86-1.0-8756-pkg1.run" and clicked enter 9. got back " sh nvidia-linux-x86-1.0-8756-pkg1.run: command not found more help please

Plug and play is off 2. I typed Linux noapic and computer started showing a line of code then stoped at "kernel panic -not syncing: no limit found try passing init = option to kernel" then stopped with blinking curser 3. I tried clearing the CMOS yesterday 4. Yes it is during the Mandriva install When I get to to point where it asks if I want to erace the entire disk I click yes. Then a warning comes up sayin all existing partitions and their data will be lost on drive hda ( 74gb, st380011a) I click ok and the bar gets 3/4 of the way across then the screen freezes up Could the serial _ch0 master no device and serial _ CH1 master no device be refering to sata hard drives? I'm using the hard drive out of my old computer that is ATA 100 not sata. According to Asus the K8V-X supports both
  18. Just finished building my first computer. I wanted to have Mandriva only on the Hard drive so when I click to erase the Windows patition the screen freezes everytime. Also when I boot after the Asus logo fades away I get (Serial _CH0 master no device, Serial _CH1 master no device) followed by Unknown Bios Error 0163. I was able to get the computer up and running and get on line by puting the hard drive back into my old computer install Mandriva 2006 then switching it back to the new one again. But every 5 minutes or so the screen would freeze up again and I would have to reboot and use it for 5 or 6 minutes again until it froze up again Many thanks maparus Asus K8X-X MOBO Sempron 2800 64 bit CPU 512 mb.
