I have a slow dialup connection and I do most of my downloading of large files at night. What would the the command line look like for dounloading Mozilla-thunderbird 1.5, mozilla- firefox 1.5 and say gimp 2.3 and then turn the computer off after all downloads are finished. many thanks maparus

I was able to follow you until I got here (and then allocate a static ip address with the correct subnet mask.) I don't know what this means. I did come to a place called DHCP host name.

My old HPPavilian 512 has a plug-in on the back panel that says Ethernet. My new computer I built has a simular plug-in on the back panel that says RJ-45 Port. Are they the same thing? Is this where the crossover cable plugs in to transfur files from one computer to the other. My old computer is a Celeron with Windows XP and my new one is a Sempron with Mandriva 2006. Will that cause a problem? What else do I need to connect the two computers? I just bought a NEC ND 3550A DVD burner. I've read about flashing the burner and I am just as confused now as I was before I read the first article. When I first tried to install aMule I couldn't get any servers so I went to the aMule forum and did a search and this is what I found http://forum.amule.org/thread.php?threadid=10183&sid= This poor guy was as lost as I am and the only thing (Kry Kry is a male Main Developer / Admin / Rude ) said was update to aMule2.1.2. I found a few other searches where they only argued over what the correct answer was so it was certain I was not going to get a straight answer there so I started looking for aMule and the only aMule 2.1.2 I could find was a tar file. I have never been able to install a tar successively so I thought I would try this one well it looks like I picked the wrong one to try because it has been one problem after another. I tried to use urpmi again and have the same problem when trying to get a server list. I updated Failed to load server.met file '/home/maparus/.aMule/server.met.download', unknown format encountered. & Not connected Kad off I did learn a few things though I know NOT to compile in root only at the end where I make file. And I may have the tools now to install a tar file that is less complacated than this one was. I would like to install a tar just once to see if I can do it. After 6 months of using Linux it has become a quest. So that's the whole story in a nutshell

Here's ny latest attempt. Permission is denied unless I'm in root I would think that is because I extracted it in root. I know not to do that now. As you can see I still have some no's showing so what do I need know? I checked urpmi for compiler and found nothing I then did a Google search for c++ to get more information and several said to install gcc. I then checked Urpmi again for C++ and GCC and GCC is already installed Which file do I need to install then ? I installed aMule from urpmi and because of some problems I had the aMule forum said I have to upgrade to aMule- 2.1.2. The only version I can find is a tar.file which I have always had problems with but Thought would try again. This is the result. What is it I need to do? Most of my learning of Linux has been trial and error so I've had to reinstall the urpmi sources many times but I never noticed the box on the easy-urpmi site that you can click to get a condensed version of the sources. What normally would take many hours to get all my sources was done in a matter of a couple of hours. So I'm ready for another guestion. I ran urpmi --auto-select --unclean and it did exactly what you said it would do. 148 packages at 865mb. WOW! That's a big chunk Two questions 1. For future reference how do I add --resume to the configuration and how do I pause the down loads and how do I get them started again? 2. The main programs I would want to make copies of are Firefox, Thunderbird, Gimp-2.3 ect. So what would I type in the terminal for say Gimp-2.3.6-1.2006.sos in order to download the package with dependaceies and maintain a copy in /var/cache/urpmi/rpms many thank maparus

I have a slow dial up and would like to make a copy of the RPMS that urpmi installs for future use but before I can get to /var/cache/urpmi/rpms to get a copy urpmi has already deleted it.
