  1. boatman,

If I were you I'd leave KDE4 on and install Gnome if you need a stable/solid DE. The reason I say leave KDE4 on is because, eventually, it will replace KDE3 like it or not. I can't say much about it since I've only tried it on an OpenSuse live cd once or twice. I believe the Project Lead once said something along the lines of "pushing KDE4 to get more users to use it and test and submit their results to improve it." I personally think that they could've introduced some of its new features in 3 and kept building on it eventually transitioning to KDE4.

Do make suggestions on the kde bugtracker or forum but most likely you'll get flamed by aron seigo, kde's lead plasma developer or a few kde fanboys, or you are told that this is the new way and to get used to it.

  2. the upgrade will not upgrade to kde4 but will keep kde3, you can install kde4 later however (though I do not recommend it as it mixes some apps, like that sorry excuse for a filemanager called dolphin will insist on being used in kde3 all the time)

  3. I really do like the artwork, the only thing is I wonder why there is a Gnome foot in the upper right corner of the KDE wallpaper.

This is a kde4 feature, they [the kde4 devs] call it the cashew or plasma toolbox, it does nothing useful however.

BTW, there doesn't seem to be a Home icon, I'm finding that to be a hassle, but I think I can fix it.

    kde4 feature

I've taken a look at Drakbackup and I'm as disapointed as ever. It doesn't see the CD/DVD drive, it only see's /dev/sg0. As an added constraint, I can't log in as root to edit the configuration file, I can't even view the file. So, I couldn't fix it if my life depended on it. The Snapshot feature seems just as lame since it won't even save it's configuration. SO, a broken system stay's broken, period.

I think the snapshot thing is work in progress, I uninstalled it; regarding the root thing, this is a feature; you are not supposed to launch a full graphical shell as root; use su - in terminal and launch apps from there (in /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc however you can set allowrootlogins to true if you really really want to)

When browsing through the package manager, if I click on a program the Control Center basically freezes with "Getting 'info' from XML meta-data..." in the status bar. This never happened before, what's up? Is it trying to access the internet and if so Why?

It downloads information, or it should; in the past you had the very large hdlist which are now split up and the bits are downloaded when needed.

  4. Economic wisdom should also tell you that there are pricing strategies other than market/target pricing (e.g. cost plus, marginal cost, markets are imperfect allowing these strategies to exist) in existence and that they work well.

In free markets people will only pay the amount that they think the product is worth to them if the nominal cost to produce a product is higher than what the market want to pay the value of the product is not that of the nominal costs but that of the market, no one of their free will will pay more.

Similarly, your economic wisdom should tell you that goods and services can be exchanged on free markets without using money as an intermediary, money itself is not an asset.

This is beside the point charity/volunteer work has a value only when someone is willing to pay for it with goods/money or services

  5. They were already disabled. Maybe I should try enabling them. I doubted that that had anything to do with it though. It is not just in Opera that things look bad. Spreadsheets in gnumeric also.

nah, leave it core x fonts *are* vry ugly. maybe you could make a screenshot of some ugly fonts?

  6. a bug...it s just a bug, I always close the folderview right, it annoys me because it makes the desktop look to messy;

you cant have files directly on the desktop in kde4 instead you need this folderview widget, which can be used to show arbitrary folders contect on the desktop (which sounds like a good idea on paper but works badly in practive for me at least)

  7. I had to downgrade:

the release files (mandriva-release-common and mandriva-release-XXXXX, where XXXX is dependent on your version of mdv, ie free, powepack, one)

    harddrake and its dependencies

    drakx-kbd-mouse-x11

    about 9 files in total
