  1. on 2008.1 there is a bug, don't know about 2007.1 though, with some cards and dhcpclient, maybe try another dhcp client (dhcp pump or dhcppcd) look under the network options for the network device....
  2. linux needs an elevate rights button popping up in case an application needs more rights to do what you tell it to, maybe using policykit.... my new laptop uses face recognition to login, actually it's an addon made by asus, together with policykit it could make administritive rights very secure and yet unobtrusive (confirm identity and click yes to confirm administrative request)....
  3. that's not what I mean: suppose you have installed a third party package or backport with a newer version of a library and now want to dist-upgrade but some package in the upgrade requires a lower version: the dist-upgrade will fail also urpmi recover takes up a lot of diskspace (it keeps backups of all the packages...)
  4. can I use this moment for an urpmi feature request: please add a downgrade option to urpmi, it will make upgrading easier, especially with backports and 3rd party packages installed ;) maybe urpmi should prefer a few downgrades if it allows more upgrades to progress and a second request for urpmi, try to continue with an upgrade in case of a failure, there is nothing worse than half an upgrade and urpmi quiting because of one package not being able to upgrade...
  5. you might want to try the new flash 10 beta, it should work with pulseaudio and have better performance in general: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/
  6. If you like a little bit of excitement there is also mandriva cooker of course but be prepared for some breakage....
  7. use etc-update ;) urpmi doesn't take care of upgrading config files oddly enough rpmdrake does and after upgrading you can select to keep, merge or upgrade any config file...
  8. I tried to get wine infected, had to go to some trouble of installing because of some missing dll's, else the malware wouldn't even run but I did get it to run causing a lot of network trafic and spawning lots of new processes. It was very easy to kill and get rid off however by killing all wine processes and deleting the hidden wine directory ~/.wine ...
  9. The first and last download if any will be by Kim himself, notice that even Papua New Guinee were people were living in the stone age not even 50 yrs ago (and many still do) even has downloads....

    Opera 9.5

it's in plf but not 9.5 yet afaik use easyurpmi to set up plf: http://www.mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php edit: it is :) ftp://ftp.cica.es/mirrors/Linux/plf/mandr...2008.1.i586.rpm
  11. It works very well, I was really surprised, different hairstyle, hats, clothes, shaving, I really surprised....
  12. ad blocking has been build into opera for a long time (right click -> block content) there are also some premade blocking lists available. There are no inline spelling checkers but aspell can be used to check spelling...
  13. Well I have a new laptop again after my old other, almost brand new one, got stolen. What can I do to make it hard for thieves? Michaelcole recommended no-ip but are there any additional measures so I can trace any potential thieve, take control of my laptop remotely, take pictutes of them etc? What to do with bios? Add a password or let it boot into any traps set? How to prevent them from removing any installed OS etc
  14. Well after my laptop got stolen my mom bought me new one (very nice of her :) ) in vista it uses the build in webcam to login, very cool and handy can this be done in linux to?
  15. Performance and feature wise opera 9.5 is a big improvement compared to <9.2x for rendering speed, gui responsiveness, plugin compatibility , it's still not as good as the windows version but the gap has narrowed considerably. And eventhough the linux version is not as good as the windows version I still prefer opera/linux than ff3 with linux or opera with windows.... @scarecrow you don't have any scrolling redraw issues with the qt4 static build?
  16. I think you are using 2008.0 not 2008.1 since mirrorlist is a new feature in 2008.1 and you are running a 2.6.22 kernel and not a 2.6.24. First upgrade or reinstall (back up important stuff first) or use 2008.0 repos
  17. if it's a fresh install it's probably quickest to try a reinstall if the problems still persist after reinstalling than it might be worth investigating also do an update before rebooting
  18. # urpmq -p libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 libstdc++2.10 # urpmi libstdc++2.10 http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr....83mdk.i586.rpm installing libstdc++2.10-2.96-0.83mdk.i586.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms Preparing... ############################################# 1/1: libstdc++2.10 ############################################# But why dont you just click the rpm and let (g)urpmi take care of all the dependencies?
  19. copy and paste the following into a console: su urpmi.removemedia -a urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist '$MIRRORLIST' urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist 'http://plf.zarb.org/mirrors/$RELEASE.$ARCH.list' then urpmi swfdec-mozilla or urpmi gnash-firefox-plugin

    authentication

set up my network to use a local proxy on my laptop which does all the authentication so I don't have to do this per application and opera gets stuck when it has many tabs open with many different servers I have to okay them all....
