  1. I noticed some problems with long opening times (and some other problems as well) so I wanted to go by this note in the errata: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2009.0_Errata#...ed_applications It basically suggested to remove libbeagle1 library. But when I was going to remove it, I got the message that the following packages are also to be removed (dependencies); why all these?: Because of their dependencies, the following package(s) also need to be removed: - brasero-0.8.2-1mdv2009.0.i586 - compiz-config-kconfig-0.7.8-2mdv2009.0.i586 - compiz-decorator-kde-0.7.8-2mdv2009.0.i586 - k3b-1.0.5-9mdv2009.0.i586 - kdebase-common-3.5.10-6mdv2009.0.i586 - kdebase-ksysguard-3.5.10-6mdv2009.0.i586 - kdebase-progs-3.5.10-6mdv2009.0.i586 - kdebase-servicemenu-2007-8mdv2009.0.noarch - ksplash-engine-moodin-0.4.2-13mdv2009.0.i586 - libkdebase4-3.5.10-6mdv2009.0.i586 - mdklaunchhelp-2007-1mdv2007.0.i586 - task-gnome-minimal-2009.0-4mdv2009.0.noarch - yelp-2.24.0-3mdv2009.0.i586 0B of additional disk space will be used. Do e.g. compiz-config-kconfig or compiz-decorator-kde or k3b :o have something to do with a beagle lib?
  2. Hi humpus, and welcome to the forum! :) And also, welcome to the world of Linux! The first thing you can do is verify the .iso image you have downloaded against the md5sum provided by the site you downloaded the cd image from. Then the next thing is to confirm that you did burn it as an .iso image (which I think you must have, if you were able to start the installation process). The third thing to check is the md5 checksum of the burn you have done. I mean checking the cd you have just burned against the md5sum. Sometimes, even if the burnspeed has been OK, the process makes a tiny mistake (burn error) and the cd is a coaster (worthless as an installation media anyway). The ability to browse through the cd is not an indication that the cd is faultless. Always check the md5sum.
  3. Yes, I just found this, but as medo3891 said it's in the Non-free Backports. Mine is currently v177.70, but I think I'm going to keep that (as it is working fine for my card). x11-driver-video-nvidia-current - NVIDIA proprietary X.org driver and libraries for GeForce 6 and later cards Version: 177.80-3mdv2009.0 Currently installed version: 177.70-2.3mdv2009.0 Group: System/Kernel and hardware Architecture: i586 Size: 26930 KB Medium: Non-free Backports (Official2009.0-20)
  4. If you install the Nvidia-latest, it will get you the latest nvidia driver (it will tell you what the latest driver is and ask you to install it: "The following package will be installed...").
  5. I'm not currently writing this from my MDV installation, but IIRC the latest Nvidia driver in Mandriva repos is just that: 177.80. Have you tried finding the same in Mandriva repos? Have you set up the sources correctly (also the PLF sources)? The simplest way (at least for me) is to install the Nvidia-latest -package (don't remember the full name of that virtual driver) that would set you up with the latest Nvidia drivers. To set the repos correctly go to the link above Easy-Urpmi and follow the instructions there (OK, I'm sure you're familiar with that - but for everyone else having this problem). Then install the Nvidia-latest -package and you're good to go.
  6. What's with the HPLIP that it would not install in your HW? For me it has been working nicely for my all-in-one HP (PSC 2355) since at least MDV 2008.0.
  7. That's an awesome site! Thanks for the link!
  8. I've been waiting for these Falko's tuts. I always like to see his choices for apps and how he makes all the bells and whistles work for web surfing (FF). But alas, there's still nothing on KDE (3.5.x or 4.1)
  9. Thanks all, I'll disable pulse or wait for the fix from Mandriva.
  10. After installing (new installation - not upgrade) MDV2009.0 the new MCC does not work properly. I have set the sources from easy-urpmi and they should all be fine. 1) Installing new software packages. MCC crashes shortly, when clicked "Install & Remove Software". 2) Updating packages. MCC crashes also when choosing "update your system" 3) Configure media sources... MCC crashes again when I choose e.g. "Edit" for one of the medias. OK, when I choose "Install & Remove Software" from the K-menu or type "rpmdrake" in konsole, everything works just fine. Also, if I add media through Konsole everything works great. But the problem occurs if I start MCC either from the Konsole or from the K-menu. So what's wrong with MCC? Here's the printout from the Konsole from the start until the "Update Your System" closes itself. [dude67@localhost ~]$ mcc [dude67@localhost ~]$ "/usr/sbin/drakvirt" is not executable [Virtualization] at /usr/sbin/drakconf.real line 779. 11. Here's my current desktop of MDV 2009.0 and KDE4. The icon theme is 'Adrix1.1', the desktop theme is 'Elegance' and the wallpaper is my own design.
  12. I didn't know this; does it really work like that? That is a very neat trick if one has a broken DVD-image (or any other large file) downloaded.
  13. As I do agree with you that Nvidia works better with Linux (or at least with Mandriva), I think your problem may have been solved without changing the card. It sounds a bit like this (and it perhaps is not all ATI's fault): More here: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2009.0_Errata#..._not_created.29
  14. I really like the colours arctic! And the designs - they are quite sophisticated and pro.
  15. Which kernel version are you running? (Type 'uname -r' in the konsole/terminal) At least with 'laptop' kernel versions you should have the powersave options available by default. I know, because for some reason Mandriva has for some time detected my desktop as a laptop (most likely because I had a wlan PCI card installed). But honestly, I very much doubt that the reason for your doubled electricity bill is the laptop... You should be looking somewhere else for that.
  16. Yeah, this is how I usually fix my KDE related problems. B)
  17. Glad you got it sorted out! You can see all the packages by choosing ALL from the drop-down menu on the left. It's (for some odd reason) set to GUI packages by default...
  18. Why do you have this kernel version? I believe this kernel version is a test-version. Also, this kernel is for desktops, but you may want to go with a laptop kernel version. Even though there are not that many differences, it would give you better control over power control for laptops. This note is a quote from rpm.pbone.net RPM search page: If you have other kernel versions installed try booting automatically to another. Go to MCC - > boot -> Set up boot system and set your default kernel to the previous one.
  19. PC above all... PS. How do like my choice of music?
  20. Is there a way to re-install lilo? Yesterday I had the situation where I needed to reinstall WinXP MBR (FIXMBR) and it naturally wrote over lilo. Now, when I tried to rescue with Mandriva 2008.1 Free DVD, the only option was to reinstall grub - not lilo. I also tried 2007.1 and 2008 Powerpack DVDs, but no. I finally had to install 2008.1 again to get my PC dual booting again. The installation went fine and I didn't have to format anything else than root-partition and the RAID1 array remained intact. But it was a real pain to have to install the whole Mandriva 2008.1 again just to have lilo reinstalled. Seems quite odd if you can repair grub but not lilo... is it so?
  21. Thank you all for your suggestions. @mindwave: that did cross my mind and I did try booting the PC with that old HDD disconnected (disconnected the SATA cable). No help. I tried the memtest (Mandriva repos and the one from the ultimate boot cd) and the results were 0 errors. I guess that's good news. Then I took out the Planet WL8310 PCI card (wlan card) as I also now have ethernet cable connected to the pc and voilá: It booted fine! I tried four times in a row and it seems to boot up just fine. I'll just wait a few days before marking this thread solved. So thank you all, especially ian! Again the virtuals are on me
  22. Thanks daniewicz, I already downloaded it and am going to burn it tonight.
  23. Can I use grub with this RAID1 installation as well? I quite like grub over lilo. How can I change that? Mandriva automatically changed the boot loader from grub to lilo when I made the RAID1 array during installation.
