  1. I've alread tried that. Even Root's aplications are missing. I cant create a new root account, can I? Besides,It's missing even in xfce4 and Gnome. [EDIT: It only works on KDE. KDE takes a lot of memory though, so can anyone help me get my Gnome and XFCE menu back?]
  2. I I tried to install OpenOffice from the Mandriva update mirrors today, and failed, the package had a bad signature and was corrupt. Then I decided to install the latest version of wine from their rpm. I installed it, but it wouldnt appear under emulators in the menu. So I rebooted my computer and when I got back I had no applications. So I went under root to try and fix it and when I used menudrake, the root menu dissapeared as well. The only thing on it is "run application" and nothing else. Can anyone help me?
  3. I figure out what's wrong. Something is wrong with my 2.1 speaker system. I figured out what it is. They have a messed up headphone jack. I had my headphones plugged in two nights ago and when I took them out, I forgot to check if the headphone jack had properly dislodged. (It acts as if there's headphones plugged in even though I take them off). I've had this problem for 8 months now, and I forgot that all I had to do was plug my heaaedphones in and out. Boy I feel stupid. Thanks for the help though. Now I know what to do when ALSA breaks. XP
  4. Alright. I suppose I should just reinstall every other program that has dependencies on ALSA then... thanks for the help. [EDIT: It stil wont work... I hope its not the speakers... and now XMMS doesnt make any noise when it plays and quits when I use OSS. Now alsaconf and aumix wont work]
  5. Erm Hi again. A couple days ago I wanted to update my sound drivers to work with Auto Zen. Well, at first I installed the oss compatibility module to alsa and it didnt work. I kinda gave up for a while, and hten decided to go to my soundcard maker's site. I downloaded their driver, used the make command to make the install, but it somehow broke. So I had to uninstall ALSA, (and the uninstaller went and uninstalled every other peice of software I had installed, from text editors to audio players) and I reinstalled everything. The drivers for the sound worked for a while. Then I got my new NVIDIA drivers because the OpenGL was slow. But to Install them, I needed a kernel upgrade. I got the new kernel, and compiled the driver for my kernel (thankfully that went off without a hitch ) The sound continued to keep working yesterday until I started Mandriva today. I had to delete the .ICEauthority file because an error message about it popped up when I booted. It hasnt had sound since then (but Root doesnt have sound either). All my groups got deleted, including sound. I've enabled most of them again, but I still have no sound. ALSA is installed, with OSS support, and I've ran alsaconfig a few times after quitting X. All the sound processes are running and nothing is Muted, according to alsamixer, gnome-volume-control, and kmix. I've also tried to use the Install cd to set up the sound- Nothing's worked. Am I gunna have to re-install ALSA and about 80% of all my software? [[Edit: Eh, sometimes I can be kinda dumb! I forgot to mention my card is described as "ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller" in harddrake.]]
  6. While trying to figure out what's wrong with my OSS mixer, i realized That I had no volume control installed. It turns out gnome-media got installed incorreclty. I downloadead a soure rpm, but it still doesnt work.... let me try installing jack again.
  7. No, I don't think installed JACK.. I'll try and see if that's it. [EDIT: I think I installed it right... I havent actually ever used make and gottten past the config part...] [i typed:] $ ./configure $ make $ su - $ make install [is that correct?]
  8. Nah, I'm using Gnome. Let me try on KDE. [edit: It works even less on KDE. I dont even get the static-like noise]
  9. Erm Hi again, I've installed the following program from the Mandriva CD out of curiosity. It's called Autozen and it's supposed to be a brain-wave altering thing. The thing of it is, whenever I use it, the only thing coming out of my headphones is a static-like noise, not unlike when your tv has no signal. I installed an OSS emulator for ALSA, but it still doesn't work. Does it work on anyone else's Desktop?
  10. Oh great. I read this too late. x_x My linux partition went under again. And the CD isnt installing. I'll try again and post if it happens again and I manage to fix it using scarecrow's method. I saw that file in Knoppix and wondered what it was for, but my internet was down for a bit today, and I didn't even know that was the problem. I even had ICEWM installed in case that would happen, but I forgot. Thanks for the help [EDIT: I got it re-installed, and it works fine now. I'll keep your tip in mind if it ever breaks again]
  11. I tried that, but it didn't do anything. How would I go about replaying the journal?
  12. I'm using ext3. And I finished installing Thunderbird already, before it messed up. I guess what I'm asking is: My KDE is corrupted, and it needs to be restored, but the disk checker lags at 32.8% should it do that? I noticed the hard drive light stops flashing when it gets to that point, so I thought it froze. [EDIT: My KDe desktop works, but the dock bar and the K menu don't, though this may be irrelevant.]
  13. The other day I was trying to install Thunderbird, and the download froze, between the install initiation and the end of the download. The whole system crashed (I should stop running applications when I instal stuff). When I booted up again, I didn't do a disk check (because it freezes at 32.8%). Everything's fine, except the KDE dock bar and the K menu (and the fact that the disk checks take too long for my liking) (Is it supposed to freeze like that, or does that mean it's finding something wrong in the system?). Anything I can do to reinstall and/or upgrade KDE?
  14. I finally got through the install! I'm having some problems with the K menu that i'll post in the Software forum or the KDE Foru, or sumthing. Thanks for the help. :D
  15. Of course I didn't burn the DVD Iso. It wouldnt fit on a CD! But Roxio thinks its a DVD for some reason. It's the same size as the official ISO for CD1 and the checksum is the same, but Roxio still bugs me about inserting a DVD (Which is odd because the computer has a CD-Burner that my uncle gave to us as soon as he got a DVD Burner). I don't know what's up with Roxio but the Iso Recorder burns it just fine, save the fact that it just refuses to install. I know it works because a few times before I've gotten CD1 to install, (but not the others. I assumed it was the minor scratches they got while I put them in a CD case and burnt the other disks. [Yeah, I burnt 3, 2, and 1 in that order for some reason. I'm weird.]) Since I'd gotten a simple KDE Install to work I was able to get the other packages from the other CD's, but after installing them the system got corrupted. On the other hand, Knoppix runs with some sound card issues, but not anything else. The Kernel in it isn't compatible for modular sound drivers, so that might be what screws it up. Generally the sound works. Right now I'm on it playing music on XMMS. I should probably try and install from 1 cd and then download the rest of the packages.
  16. Thanks for the help. And no, I didn't realize that it would make that message if I switched the icons. :P I burnt the ISO's as Isos using a free ISO burner because Roxio Easy CD creator 5 burns the other disks, but assumes that Disk 1 is a DVD for some reason. I used Maxel CD-R, but it's optimized for music. That might have something to do with it. I'm not entirely sure though, since I burnt a version of knoppix on the same kind and it runs perfectly fine. I'd use Roxio, but I really don't know why It says that. I checked the md5sum and it matched. The program I used was Iso Revorder V.2. Maybe I should burn Disk one with that program, and then use roxio to burn the others, since I didn't have problems with Disk 1 when I tried a 3 disk install. (PS: Thanks for telling me about the icon. I'll make flash export it as a .Gif) [Edit: I used Roxio to burn the Knoppix cd]
  17. I downloaded the Iso's again and checked the md5sum, and it turned out to be ok. After that I burnt the CD's at 4X speed and decided to very carefully make sure they dont get scratched at all. I popped it in and tried every method of install, even with one CD. But at the end it always says something is corrupt. I'm starting to think that maybe they're giving out messed up Iso's or something, but that can't be it, since others got it to work. I got past the first CD but it always says it fails to install something. Either the RPM Databas or the ID something-or-other (I can't remember. I got so frustrated I threw away the disks, and decide to post here when I got the chance). I still have the ISO's but I'm not sure what to do. Maybe I should just save up & buy the $60 version?
  18. New problem The iso i got through bittorrent makes Roxio Easy ?CD Creator think that it's a DVD. I don't have a DVD drive, and the checksum of the ISO is wrong as well. The other disks are fine. I'm going to have to re-download the first disk again. [Edit: Topic continued at: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=30446 (I couldn't find this topic. My bad. )]
  19. I just realized something. Since I used Torrents this time, I didn't get all the ASC and MD5SUM files. Do those have to be in the folder when you burn the ISO's? [EDIT: I searched around and found that they're what that proggy I downloaded uses to check the integrity. Never Mind. I'll get them if I ever need to check the integrity now that I have new ISO's.]
  20. Yeah I didn't quite get what the program said when I scanned the md5sum, but it said some files were missing. I'm thinking the ISO's might have been damaged, so I'm downloading them again with BitTorent which is a bit safer, and I'm also gunna burn them at 4x now. Once again, I'll post again if I have anymore problems. I have a feeling I might stay around for a while here, even if I do get it working.
  21. Thanks man, and no, I didn't unrar it through winrar. I think winrar can check integrity too, but I wouldnt use it to unRar the files. I'm gunna check the disks and burn them at x4 speed later. Thanks for the help.
  22. Thanks, but how would I go about checking the integrity? Through DAP? Ii also have WinRar, which can also open the ISO files...
  23. Er, Hi, I'm kinda new here, and I'm having trouble installing Mandriva. (obviously) I've used knoppix and decided I should have a linux Distro on my hard drive. I downloaded the Mandriva ISOS using DAP (which probably also installed adware in my system x_x), and burnt them to CDs. Everything went fine, except that I noticed it ran a bit slow. (The default kernel is made for comps with 1GB of memory, I only have ~600MB) It froze half-way through the first time. I repeated it at least 3 times, (formatted the drive that many times as well), but nothing happened. So I realized I had to use the Alt1 kernel. So I booted that up (and had to change to a PS/2 keyboard since my USB stopped working) and installed it. However the 3rd Cd had corrupted libraries. So I decided to only use the first one and get the core system installed with KDE. It worked fine, and I installed the missing packages though the RPM manager. This is the part where I donno what happened. I'm not sure if its because I was installing stuff in root, (that's a big no-no, I hear) or because the installer was corrupted, but after a couple hours of running it, (getting it customized, setitng up the effects and stuff) , KDE just point-blank exploded, and I was stuck in ICEWM. I rebooted and the system wouldn't start up. So I reinstalled it AGAIN. This time, I had to install 2 more times before it actually got through, and the system wouldnt boot up. I re-burnt the cds (thinking they were scratched or sumthing) and I installed it (from CD1 again). But it booted very slowly. I got it to work and while i was installing the packages, It froze and I couldn't force-quit it. (it seems very unstable x_x) So I restarted it, and now it wont boot past the root filesystem check. I think when I used DAP to download it, it used several different sources and they may have been slightly different versions. I'm not sure though. Can anyone tell me what it was? Sorry If my explaination is too long. I just felt like i had to explain everything that's been happening. [i have 3 hard drives, 2 are for windows, and the 3rd is split into 5GB for Windows (mostly for swap) and 15GB for linux. One is a Seagate brand HD and it came with my comp. The other two are Western Digital and one is a slave to the CDROM drive.]
