  1. Well, I know that will work, e4ven if you are forced back down to the versionf on the CD's. I'd hoped someone might come along with a more subtle solution, but in the absence of a skillful fix, brute force will get the job done.
  2. Yeah, I can understand that, it would be like buying a new car, but slapping the engine from the old car into it before you get off the lot. Bit stupid.
  3. In terms of stability and functionality, I really like 9.2 also. It was my third mandrake, and the first that didn't require any real work after install. Everything just worked. Of course, I continued to update, for the features. With so much going on at mandrake, for better or for worse, I'm really curious to see what this release does. AND what 2k5 does.
  4. That's kind of where I am. As far as software is concerned, my system is realy stable. My processor is on it's way south, but what version of mandrake I run won't have any effect on that. Of course, every time I try and use my wife's USB memory stick, I have to mount it manualy. I think that will be a deciding factor for me. If that's fixed, I think I"ll upgrade, if not, I'm sticking with 10.1 until mandriva has a really compelling release.
  5. There's already a lot of threads about the direction of mandriva, the new name, the new release cycle, and so one. I'm just curious how many of you plan on upgrading and how many plan on staying with 10.1 and why, if there's a reason. Right now I'm realy not sure if i will or not. The one hting that might make me install it, is that I have on good authority, that they have been working very hard to correct a bug that kept USB memory pens and card readers from being automaticaly mounted if they were formatted without a partition table, and that bug may well be fixed in the upcoming release. On the other hand, my system is pretty stable right now. Plus, I just went through all the trouble of upgrading to kde 3.4, which I don't believe 10.2 will have, so Ill have to either stay with 3.3 or upgrade again. Also, while I think they're heading the right way, I'm nervous about anything labled as 'transitional', and the same applies to 2k6 So, what do you guys think
  6. sorry, ignore the old post, thought you were trying to upgrade kde on 10.1 Not a clue. best I can offer, log into IceWM or failsafe, open up mcc, and remove all kde packages. search for kde and check all. Then you can take a clean run at 3.3 or back down to 3.2 Normaly, I'd reccomend you try 10.1 and update to kde 3.4, but with 10.2 coming any day, that would realy be a waste of time.
  7. Well, I'm prettywell armed now if i get itchey between release. I'm not intereted in something that is only cli or gnome, so ubuntu is out, but kubuntu looks good, and I can't help but be curious about fc4, and some of the others that are realy not well known, Might be fun to try something that hardly anybodie's heard of.
  8. Why use windows to burn? I fyou weren't aware, there's a number of very good CD autoring probrams for linux, which are free. Personaly, my favorite is called k3b. It's part of KDE, but may not have been installed. If it's not there you can add it through the mandrake control center. I have always fround k3b to be a very complete and robust burning program that competes nicely with some of the nicer windows software, like nero. BGy default in mandrake, you can find it at kmenu>system>archiving>cdburning>k3b and you can open up a console programs like konsole or eterm, and enter the command 'k3b'
  9. It's too bad Nero doesn't like magicdev, since magicdev is so nice, but its' good to see neror ported to native linux. I always liked nero when I had windows.
  10. Well, other than the horrible name, I think mandriva is realy heading the right way. And anual release cycle 'should' mean more stable releases. Look how often Debian has an official stable release. We're at what, 3 years now? Debian is a rock. It's an outdated rock, but a rock none the less. I am nervous about the addition of tech from conectiva. I think it's a good thing, but I'm nervous. It shows that the folks at mandriva are smart enough to know that there is always room to improve and taking help from another distro (even if you have to buy-out that distro) can make your distro better. It's a good sign.
  11. Well, I was wrong about switching DMs. By all apearances, that was a fluke. My xorg.con keeps getting re-written on re-boot too. It's a smallish problem, but I have to start in runlevel 3, log in as root, edit my xorg.conf, service dm start. It kind of sucks. Anybody has a clue, I'd love to hear it.
  12. Thanks Devries. checking cat solved it for me. It's funy, event2 wasn't listed before, but that's the one that gave me output, and now it's all working like a champ. So, all's well that ends well.
  13. I know there are several people on this board who use the graphire or some other wacom tablet. If one of you has it working properly under kde3.4 and whatever version of xorg this is, 6.8.2 I think, could you PLEASE post your working XF86Config ?? I would be deeply in your debt.
  14. Well, no go on removing wacom and USBmouse, then re-inserting wacom. Still no response of any kind from my tablet. The litle status light on the tablet is on, and it changes to green when I click a button, so the tablet itself is conected and functioning normaly. In the mean time, I'm getting around with alt-f12 and the keyboard, but this sucks. please let me know if you can think of anything else.
  15. OMG, I that alt-f12 is awsome. could be a real life saver. I'll try the modprobin stuff later. thanks.
  16. In the MCC, go to system>display manager and try switching from kdm, to xdm. when I did that, my mouse starteed to remember it's settings, heven't tested the wacom yet, but this much is hopeful
  17. You are not required to install anything else. You will probably want to install kdeartwork kdemoreartwork kdemultimedia kdegames and a few others, but only if you want them on your computer. As for the wheel. I've had some odd problems with mice since the upgrade. My Wacom Tablet no longer works, and my trackball forget's it's wheel setting on reboot, and I have to go back and change it in in the mandrake control center. I'm working on that tonight, and if I figure it out, I'll be sure to let you know.
  18. mandrake 10.1, from PowerPack DVD. urpmi kdebase After install, Wacom Graphire2 tablet no longer functions. No errors, no useful log output. Simply fails to do anything. Not even reccognized as a generic USB by MCC. On the bright side, my Logitrac TrackMan Marble+ still works like a champ.
  19. Okay, let me tell you everything. I was fealing adventurous and bored (a deadly combination) and decided to install kde3.4 from thacs. I did the urpmi.addmedia.hokey.pokey and then, since so many people had other problems, I made sure I had both plf's, contrib, updates and main. I added avery source I could find other than cooker. Then, I booted x-failsafe, opened up mcc>software>remove and searhed for kde, then removed everything it found and everything that was dependent on it. Then I added kdebase, this also updated xorg by all apearances. Re-start X, no errors, everything beautiful, but no stinking mouse. My mouse, a wacom graphire2 tablet that took me forever to get working, has stopped, even though xorg.conf did not change. Any suggestions?
  20. Open up your favorite text editor, kate, kwrite emacs vi. Whatever tickles your pickle. The first line of the script should be #!/bin/bash AFter that, just put whatever command you want executed, and hit return. Each command should be on it's own line, and they will execute one at a time. So, if the command is ksmoothdock (I'm only guessing at what the command is, since I don't use ksmoothdock myself) then the script would have 3 lines. #!/bin/bash ksmoothdock and the last line would be blank. Save that as whatever.sh and put it in /home/'you/.kde/Autostart/ and be aure 'Autostart' is capitalized, I didn't do that before, but I should have.
  21. That's easy once you know. Just make a script that will launch ksmoothdock, and dump that script into /home/'you'/.kde/autostart/ You can use that to start anything you want. Alternatively, there is an option to 'restore last session' on start, instead of a clean desktop. That will restart anything you had running last time you shut down. I reccomend the autostart option though, seems less problematic to me.
  22. you said that you are getting the nvidia logo on boot. Is this still correct? If so, at what point are you getting it? Are you seeing an nvidia logo just after you press the power button, or is it just before the desktop loads? Also, what is the EXACT filename of the nvidia driver you're trying to load? Last, try this: When you get to lilo (that's the boot loader that asks you about things like linux, linux nofb and failsafe) hit escape. you should be taken to a text prompt that lists all of those options where you can type one of them in. What I want you to type is 'linux 3' That will boot you into a console. Then, just log in as yourself, and enter the command 'startx' Hopefully, when that fails, it will return you to a screen with a usefull eror message on it, let us knowwhat it says.
  23. first thing you might try, is simply doing what I do. 1. Leave card reader unplugged. 2. Put card in reader. 3. Plug reader into computer. That usualy works for me, provided that the cards are formatted with a partition table and not just directly formatted. i.e. they need to show up as /dev/sda1 and not /dev/sda Of course, if you don't have a USB extension cable or a front USB port, that's not a great way to go. You might look into manualy changing the hotplug scripts, or doing a litle googleing. let me know if you find anything, this is what has kept me from using one of those USB card readers that mounts in a lfoppy drive slot
  24. Okay. I like mandriva (hate the name, love the distro) Anyway, I'll be getting the final of MDK Limited Edition 2005 and installing it as soon as it comes out, but from what I can see, it's not what mandrake says it is. They keep calling it a "transitional release' but as far as I can tell, it's just 10.2 renamed, the real transitional release will be Mandriva Linux 2006. It will be and 8 month release, so not 6 or 12, and it will be the first to include any new tech from conectiva. Now, I'll use 10.2, and I'll use 2007 when it rolls around, but I doubt very seriously I'll be interested in Mandriva2k6. Now, I know me, and I know I'll get itchy waiting 20 months in between new distros. So, what would you guys reccomend? (8months from 2k5 -2k6 +12 for 2k6-2k7 = 20 months) Reasonable stability is a must, but I'm not freaky about it. IU just don't want some beta quality garbage. I also figure if I do play with something else, it should be very different from mandrake. I've thought about Gentoo or lfs, just because I kind of like the idea of comiling everything, but I'm concerned about downloading every litle thing. I'm only 256k DSL. Not exactly blazing. I've also thought about SUSE (it sounds nice) or linspire just for the laughs. My first distro was Lycoris and I have intention of going back there. Anyway, if you have anyuthing constructive, fire away.
